A plan for the future of the greater Selwyn district will be voted on at tomorrow’s district council meet-ing.

Lincoln, Prebbleton, and Rolleston have been included in long-term plans for Christchurch and this plan is being put in place for the rest of the district.

District councillor Mark Alex-ander said they have been covered by greater Christchurch and this plan covers the rest of the district and will give those areas frame-work for growth and development in the future.

The Selwyn 2031: District Devel-opment Strategy is on the table for the district council to adopt which outlines the growth and develop-ment strategy for the district in the next 17 years.

Cr Alexander said this plan is giving an equivalent structure to the rest of the district which is already in place in eastern Selwyn.

He said the plan was important to the community and it was about asking what they wanted moving forward. Feedback on what areas of growth were vital to the plan which could be something like infrastruc-ture he said. • Turn to page 2

The Lincoln Fire Brigade has a new $50,000 addition to the team.

A new nine-seat Ford Transit van has been added to the brigade’s fleet as a support vehicle giving the 35-member brigade a much needed new transport option.

The van will be used for transporting firefighters to emergencies and training exercises as well as moving equipment.

Funding support from Pub Charity and owner of The Famous Grouse Hotel Craig Bradford made the new van possible and has been added to the brigade’s two fire trucks, tanker and four-wheel-drive.

Mr Bradford said the fire brigade was a vital part of the community and when it needed help he was more than happy to pitch in to keep the Lincoln community run-ning.

With no ambulances in Lincoln, the fire brigade was the first responders to emer-gencies and anything to help it perform that duty was good for Lincoln, he said.

Chief Fire Officer Kevin Greene said there would have been no way the brigade could

have been able to afford the van without the help from these parties.

He said a van like this gives the brigade a bit more flexibil-ity when transporting fire-fighters to accidents or fires.

“We’re often involved with large scale events that can in-volve our firefighters for many hours or in some cases, several days. A van like this allows us to transport fresh firefighters as well as equipment to refresh or rotate crews already on the scene.

Mr Greene said it makes it easier to transport firefighters

for training, particularly when they travel into Christchurch to use the resources at the training facility in Woolston.

He added that the brigade is more frequently attending medical emergencies so the van would be able to act as a quick responder in a critical situation.

Other stations in the district like Rolleston have a van like this and he said they work well responding to call outs.

Senior firefighter Bruce Reid said the members of the brigade were “delighted” with the new van.

• From page 1The strategy outlines the plans

to manage urban growth in the district. Plans include to continue to keep the district a great place to live, work and play, provide higher living environments and maintain the district’s iconic rural character.

The need for a long-term plan is because of the district’s fast-growing population. The district council projects the district will have a population of close to 75,000 in 2031 which would put pressure on the district unless planning is started now with the 2031 strategy.

Councillor Sam Broughton said strategic planning was always important and this would make the most of the positives in the district.

Public consultation on the plan was carried out earlier this year with 55 submissions being made by the public.

Cr Broughton said the majority of the submissions were posi-tive and they mainly focused on “where to from here” for the dis-trict in terms of development.

These submissions were dis-cussed by councillors and dis-trict council staff in August and changes were made according to the feedback that was received.

District council staff said if any changes were made to the plan at the meeting it would be updated on its website.

New plantings

GREEN THUMB: Broadfield School planted new seed-lings along the community hall opposite the school last week. The initiative was in partnership with Honda. Every new car Honda sells in New Zealand it gives a regional council around New Zealand enough money to plant 10 new trees. Since April 2004, 590,000 trees have been planted.

BY KYLE KNOWLES

Selwyn has some of the lowest numbers of pokie machines in New Zealand but this is set to be capped further.

Under a new draft plan that is likely to be adopted at tomorrow’s district coun-cil meeting the maximum number of licensed pokie machines allowed in the district will drop from 165 to 110.

District councillor Sam Broughton said the council has asked residents what they thought of the current numbers of machines and they were happy with the current numbers.

He said applications for new machines were not that frequent so there was enough wiggle room under the new draft plan.

Selwyn currently has one machine to about every 556 persons which is well below the national average of one machine to every 262 persons.

The district council will vote on whether to adopt the new draft gambling venue policy updating it for the first time in 10 years tomorrow.

If the draft is adopted it will then be put out for consultation under special consultative procedure which will likely run from November 11 to December 12 and hearings, if needed will take place in January or February.

Once this process has concluded the draft will then be taken back to district council for the final policy to be adopted.

Under the current policy the district is permitted to have a maximum of 165 machines. This does not take into account the much larger population now in the district compared to 2004 however.

The 2004 policy allows for one pokie machine to every 350 people and is outdated because of the change in population. The

population of the district in 2004 was about 20,000 less of today’s estimate of around 50,000.

There are 89 licensed pokie machines in the dis-trict with 82 in use across 10 venues. Nine more ma-chines have gained consent recently for the proposed new Leeston Hotel.

A further consent for nine more machines at the pro-posed West Melton restau-rant and bar is on hold but is likely to be granted also.

This would take the number of machines to 107 which would be only three short of the maximum al-lowed under the new draft policy.

Rolly Inn owner Nigel Lilley said this could be a little “short-sighted” with not much wiggle room if a new hotel was to go up in the district.

He said they could just leave the policy how it was and judge every new ap-plication for machines on a case by case basis.

Number of pokie machines under review

Money leftA large amount of money was handed into police after being found on the forecourt of the BP station in Rolleston. Police believe the money was left there on or about October 3. If any-one thinks this is their money or know who the money might belong to please phone Senior Constable Glen Tweedie at the Rolleston Police Station on 347 9248.

Suspicious fireThere was a suspicious car fire near Arthurs Pass last week. Arthurs Pass police said the car was involved in a car crash at the weekend and was left on the side of the road. The car was then burnt out late one night. Arthurs Pass rural firefighters were called to the car but the flames had left the car and only smouldering grass needed to be extinguished.

Crash challengeThe Rolleston Fire Brigade fin-ished joint runners up to Ger-aldine at the Canterbury Road Crash Rescue Challenge on Sat-urday. Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade won three of the six cat-egories to win the competition which also featured teams from Lincoln, Leeston and Kirwee. It was the first time Rolleston had hosted the challenge and Chief Fire Officer Nigel Lilley said the day went really well. He said Geraldine were deserved winners over his station as they had trained hard for the compe-tition. Rangiora was the other joint second place-getter.

BY EMMA-JANE MCLENNANBudding performers from all walks of life gathered last week, with a common dream: To compete in The X Factor New Zealand.

More than 100 people were lined up outside the New Zealand Institute of Sport in Christchurch including two as-piring musicians from Selwyn. Dylan Berry from Leeston and Jaydin Shingleton from Springston were at the auditions looking to make it big.

Each person who gets a “maybe” will find out within three weeks if they make it through. Contestants who are successful at the pre-auditions will then perform in front of the four judges and a live televised audience.

Dylan Berry has spent the past year learning to make gui-tars, and now he’s trying his hand at performing with one.

“I went to the US to learn luthering [guitar making]. But it was cold – I was in Wisconsin,” he said, laughing.

“I work on the farm during the day and make guitars at night. I’ll be performing Purple Rain by Prince. Good song,” he said.

Country singer Jaydin Shin-gleton won his first guitar at a singing competition, and his second one he inherited from his grandfather.

“The first one is long gone but I’ll be using granddad’s one,” he said.

Mr Shingleton started singing when he was four-years-old, and has been playing the guitar for five years.

“I’m also a student, of music more or less. I tried computing but that didn’t really work out,” he said.

“I’ve been to lots of competi-tions so I’ve had the nerves a lot, but when I go in and see the judges it might be a bit differ-ent,” he said.

The X Factor is a reality TV music competition franchise which originated in the UK. TV 3 will begin production late No-vember and it will be screened early next year.

Hi Paul, I hear you are doing the Fight for Christchurch this year?

Yes I am.Why did you decide to do it?I started two years ago on a bit

of a life reinvention. I was 107kg and pretty unhealthy so I started to get into sport but it was very challenging. I started a weight-loss programme and started playing sport again. I played for the Rolly Rebels but even that was hard and I needed to get fitter. Even just coaching my son’s Rippa Rugby team and keeping up with kids was a challenge. Last year I was looking to have a fight but couldn’t find an opponent but I was ap-proached this year. This was the ultimate challenge, to fight in the ring, and I thought this was a great challenge for me to improve my fitness and reinvent myself.

How has the training been going?

The training is really tough. I run every morning in Rolleston so if you see me out there with green shoes on give me a wave. Every day at 6.30am I am out there for

half an hour. I do boxing training four days a week which is a mix of group sessions and one-on-one sparring sessions.

How much weight have you lost?

24kgHave you ever boxed before?Nope, never before. I got in

some fights as a teenager and on the rugby paddock but no, noth-ing like this.

Was it nerve-racking getting in the ring for the first time?

The nerve-racking part is getting fit. But yeah, I’m nervous the guy I’m fighting is from Spark so it is a bit of a telecommunications challenge. He’s never fought before either so it’s going to be three two-minute rounds of beating the crap out of one another.

Are you nervous about being knocked out?

Yeah absolutely. I am nervous about not being good enough and nervous about putting on a good show. I have a few self-doubts about being able to keep hands up so that’s what my trainer is work-ing with me on. There is so much more to it, I may have bitten off more than I can chew.

What do you know about your opponent?

I know he works for Spark - Jono Huntley - and seems like a really nice guy. We are both raising funds for charity - mine is Ronald McDonald house.

How is the fundraising going? It’s going really well. Vodafone

is supporting me and they will match up to $5000 of anything I raise so that’s really exciting for Ronald McDonald House, anything would be helpful. I have got a couple of things coming up including a Halloween night and a girl’s night out. It is also moving along nicely through my contacts at Vodafone. My softball team is looking at helping out where they can and collection tins I have at the club are almost full. I got to spend some time at Ronald McDonald House and I was blown away by what they do and it costs

them $1000 a day to run it.What do you day for a day job?I’m the regional sales manager

for Vodafone. I look after retail in the South Island. I make sure our staff takes care of our customers. My job is close to people’s hearts – people would rather lose their arm before their phone.

How did you start coaching? The rugby thing was through

my son. It is always hard for clubs to find coaches so I put my hand up to be an assistant coach and it’s gone from there really. It has been really fulfilling and I thought it was cool so I have been doing that for three years now.

Vodafone regional sales manager Paul Frewen has a lot on his plate, but he found some time to speak to reporter Kyle Knowles about his boxing debut in the Fight for Christchurch and his work in the Rolleston community.

You are into softball as well?Yeah, the Rolleston club started

up a couple years ago and now has 22 teams. I hadn’t played softball for years and I went to a have a go day and loved it so I got involved and now play for the Rangers and coach my son’s team, the Raiders. I get to share my experience and knowledge from when I was growing up playing softball and I enjoy watching the kids develop.

Rugby too?I play golden oldies rugby for

the Rolleston Rebels. It’s good to get out and have a run round with guys who played when they were a bit younger and now just want to have a social game. The competition is pretty friendly and fun and not too serious. You still have to tackle and run though.

You are involved with Burn-ham School?

Yep, I have been on the Burnham board of trustees for three years now. Fortunately or unfortunately I joined just at the time the government an-nounced that Burnham was go-ing to close and the board has worked really hard to change their decision.

How do you fit everything in?

I work for a really good, understanding company that is supporting me in this level of commitment to sports.

How long have you lived in Rolleston?

10 years. I moved to Invercar-

gill for work, where I met and married my wife Nicky. Then I moved back to Christchurch and my wife said let’s move to Rolleston. I said ‘what are you smoking?’ But now I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. Ev-erything we want is here.

Where do you like to go on holiday?

Kinloch, at the top of Lake Wakitipu.

The fam-ily goes there most Christ-mases for some fishing and water sports.

What is your favourite sporting moment?

That would have to be the Rolleston Rangers winning our softball grade last year. I was the winning run. I stole around third and won the game for us.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams has said nitrate levels in Canterbury’s waterways including the Liffey Stream in Lincoln are a concern to everyone but says issues have been building for a long time.

A measure of nitrate levels in the Liffey last month showed nitrate levels had doubled since September last year.

Ms Adams said “many of the problems we see today have been decades in the making, and there is no overnight fix”.

Ms Adams said the issue around water quality was being taken seriously and something was being done about it.

“The Government takes water quality extremely seriously. That’s why nearly half a billion dollars has been committed to cleaning up our waterways, including $11 million for Lake Ellesmere.

“The Canterbury Water Man-agement Strategy and the work of the zone committees show a real commitment to dealing with this issue as a community,” she said.

A partnership between Fonterra and the Department of Conserva-tion called Living Water has a goal of getting the community working together and fixing the issues of water quality with particular focus on the Lake Ellesmere catchment area.

National standards were an-nounced earlier this year by Ms Adams in her minster for the environment. She said this will

make a significant improvement to the way freshwater is managed.

Based on those standards the Liffey is classed as a C-grade waterway on an A to D scale.

Ms Adams said: “This means, for the first time, New Zealand’s rivers and lakes will have mini-mum requirements that must be achieved so the water quality is suitable for ecosystem and hu-man health.

“Because of our concern that a stronger national framework was required, earlier this year I announced the first ever national standards for freshwater that will make a significant improvement to the way freshwater is managed.

“On top of this, the Govern-ment has already required councils to maintain or improve the quality of their water through the national policy statement for freshwater management.

“The national standards are about setting minimum criteria. Sites that councils and communi-ties identify as swimming sites will require higher stan-dards”.

Ms Adams said while nitrates in waterways are certainly an issue in Selwyn, urban waterways areas are also heavily polluted.

Poor quality management of council, industrial and urban waste are causing issues and these must be dealt with alongside the agricultural issues to make real progress she added.

Nitrate level issues accumulated over time AMY ADAMS – SELWYN MP

There has been some news in the media recently about an outbreak of severe gastroenteritis, which has affected more than 120 people and resulted in around one third of these sufferers being hospital-ised.

The Ministry for Primary Indus-tries has been investigating to try and determine the source of the illness.

It is always difficult in such oc-currences of food-borne illness to identify with certainty which spe-cific products are responsible and, if, as seems to have been the case, the risk of infection is no longer present, it is sensible to wait until definitive information is available rather than releasing preliminary results that may be misleading.

Of course the best way to avoid such illnesses is by having strong

food safety measures in place and for this reason I was very pleased to see that five Selwyn businesses had recently received awards from the Selwyn District Council for excellence in food safety, specifi-cally for demonstrating excellence in developing and implementing Food Control Plans.

It is also great to learn that our local businesses are some of the best prepared in New Zealand for changes to the food act in 2016 which will require all food opera-tors to have food control plans in place.

With help from seminars run by the Ministry for Primary Industries and the district council, around 70 per cent of food ser-vice sector businesses in Selwyn reportedly already have a plan in place covering all aspects of food safety such as food storage, appro-priate personal hygiene and clean-

ing practices, food temperature monitoring and pest control measures.

More good news for Selwyn residents is the recent completion of a major upgrade to the Darfield water supply.

Although I am no longer Minister for the Environment, the quality of our freshwater resources remains of great concern to me as the local MP for Selwyn. For this reason I welcome this improved capacity to service the growing populations of Darfield and the surrounding area with a safe and secure supply of high quality drinking water.

I am pleased to hear that tests have indicated that water from the town’s new bore sources is of a quality that complies with national Drinking Water Standards and is suitable for supply without treat-ment.

The Hororata parish spring fair, held annually on Labour Day, has become an essential fundraising event as it has become harder to balance the books since the earthquakes.

Hororata spring fair chair-person Lucy Cookson said: “The parish used to gain good income from the use of the St John’s stone church before the September 2010 earthquakes and events like the fair pro-vided extra funds”.

However, events like the spring fair are now the main income for the parish, cover-ing the day-to-day running expenses, pastoral care, com-munity activities and services.

The St John’s stone church has been made watertight so no further damage is sus-tained but no further repairs have been started. The Church Property Trust has advised they do wish to see the stone church rebuilt and a project plan is being developed at the moment.

Mrs Cookson said: “We had a public meeting with the CPT a few months ago and it was positive to hear that they want

to rebuild the stone church, as that is what the parish and wider community would like. So we have a common pur-pose, now it is just a matter of working out how we get there.

“Last year we moved the fair to the Hororata Domain which has allowed the event to expand. We are focused on of-fering a great community day and hopefully from that we reach our fundraising target for the parish”.

The fair offers a great fam-ily day out with people com-

ing from all over Canterbury for the event. As always there will be great bargains to be found with the white elephant, second-hand books, and the country auction, along with over 50 stalls with wares from produce, art, clothing and more.

The Hororata Parish Spring Fair will be held at the Horo-rata Domain, on October 27 from 9.30am to 2pm, entry is free.

The latest review states the centre is very well placed for its role of promoting positive learning outcomes for

children putting the preschool on a four year review cycle, the longest period that can be allocated. This shows that ERO has a high level of trust in the management and teach-ers at The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and Nursery to provide high quality preschool education and care.

“It’s a great achievement,” explains Tracy Summerfield who along with husband Gavin owns and operates The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and Nursery in Rolleston and a second in West Melton. “ERO will not allocate a four year cycle at the first review and seldom does on a second review. They were extremely impressed with all of the awesome things happening at our centre.”

ERO assesses early childhood education centres in rela-tion to the:• Delivery of the early childhood curriculum• Emotional and physical safety of the children,• Staff qualifications and training, and the• Centre’s facilities, policies and procedures

ERO noted that The Cat’s Pyjamas’ philosophy promotes the children’s wellbeing; that positive learning outcomes were emphasised; the environment was well-resourced, in-teresting and stimulating; there was respect, affirmation and caring between child and teacher; and there were quality teaching practices. The full report can be viewed on ERO’s website or by following the links from: www.catspjs.co.nz.

“We are incredibly proud of the awesome result that our team has achieved. All staff are committed to our philos-ophy of providing quality care and education in a respect-ful and caring environment,” said Tracy. She and Gavin established the Rolleston centre after identifying a need in the area after they had difficulty finding a suitable centre for their own children.

The Cat’s Pyjamas’ centres have experienced, caring and well-qualified staff dedicated to delivering a stimulating learning programme which values both teacher and child initiated experiences. Children are encouraged to partici-pate in planned and spontaneous activities and to have lots of fun while learning.

“Our wonderful teachers are our most important resource”, says Tracy. “They make our centres the special places that they are.”

For Tracy and Gavin it is not just business. They live locally and share their working hours between the two cen-tres. Many of their teachers are locals too. “It is about giving something back. Our centres are part of the community,” she adds.

The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and Nursery centres are open from 7.30am to 6.00pm, five days a week for 50 weeks of the year. Interested parents are welcome to contact Tracy or Gavin at Rolleston - 10 Beaumont Drive (03 347 9561) or West Melton - 65 Iris Taylor Avenue in Preston Downs (03 741 1785).

Preschool gains top ERO ratingNot every day can a preschool boast it has achieved a top Education Review Office (ERO) rating and on just its second review. No wonder the owners and teachers at The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and Nursery, Rolle-ston are elated. They achieved the highest rating possible from an ERO review after just six years of operation.

BY KYLE KNOWLES

The Selwyn Times has started a new series featuring sports clubs in the Selwyn district.

The Prebbleton Tennis Club was formed in 1910 and 104 years on now has eight courts, six of which are floodlit and of those, two were only played on for the first time last week.

Four of the courts have also been resurfaced giving the club some of the newest courts in Selwyn.

Club president Steve Thomas said it has taken two or three years to get this development over the line but going from only having four courts 10 years ago to now having double that is great.

The success of the facilities has not translated to big triumphs on the court just yet with just the one win last year. The mid-week divi-sion 1 side was able to win their competition in 2013.

In spite of the little recent achievement Mr Thomas said the club always enters competitive teams into the top competition and hopes to find some success in the near future.

Mr Thomas has been the presi-dent since 2010 and said he has enjoyed it and over that time it has been great to see the growth of

the club along with the Prebbleton community.

Last season Prebbleton had five senior players representing Ellesmere in the Browning Shield, Canterbury Country’s premier

tennis trophy. Six juniors were also selected to represent Ellesmere.

The club promotes a community feel and with a large number of families involved with the club it is

not hard to see why. There are 40 families playing at

the club with at least two people from each family as members.

It currently has 110 junior play-

ers and 70 senior players. Of the 70 senior players there are four teams in the top three divisions with one side in division 1.

There are four teams in the presidents grade and six in the mid-week competition.

The club celebrated its centenary in 2010 with celebrations to mark the occasion. More than 100 past and present players joined in the festivities which ended with a function at the Prebbleton Rugby Club.

A twilight competition has run for more than 20 years at the club. This year’s matches started last night with 14 teams of four participating.

The club is also having a cel-ebration day on November 2 to mark the opening of the revamped tennis courts.

For more information on Preb-bleton Tennis or how to join email [email protected].

There is a $50 prize for the winner (sponsored by Fonterra). Building? Check your property complies with stormwater requirementsIf you’re involved in building a home, it’s important that your property is designed to meet stormwater requirements. Surface water will always flow downhill, however you cannot allow storm water from your property to flow freely onto other properties as this can be a nuisance for neighbours.

In particular, careful planning is required to consider where water falling on hard surfaces such as your roof, driveway or sealed areas will go. Testing needs to be carried out before a building consent is granted to show that appropriate stormwater drainage will be in place to dispose of water.

The Council has information available to help with designing appropriate stormwater solutions for your property, please visit www.selwyn.govt.nz/stormwater-articles.

Advice is also available from our building consent team – email [email protected] and phone 347 2839.

Conversations planned on future housing needsThe Council is hosting a series of community conversations to gather information on housing needs in Selwyn District. The Council sees its role as advocating for the community rather than being a provider of social housing so we want to provide developers and social housing providers with accurate information on the need for different types of housing in Selwyn district to help them plan for the future.

The Council’s Selwyn 2031 – draft District Development Strategy identifies the need for greater housing choice for Selwyn residents, including more compact, small houses. Population changes are expected to create more demand for smaller housing.

The conversation sessions are open to the public and to community groups. They are being held at these locations:

• Lincoln, Wednesday 22 October, from 5 – 7pm, at Lincoln Event Centre

• Darfield, Thursday 23 October, from 10am – 12 noon, at Darfield Library

• Leeston, Friday 24 October, from 10am – 12 noon, at Leeston Library.

To attend a session please RSVP by emailing [email protected] or phoning 03 347 2752.

Volunteers needed for welfare exercise

Selwyn’s Civil Defence staff are looking for volunteers to help with a welfare registration exercise.

Volunteers are needed for Exercise Liffey from 10 – 11.30am on Wednesday 29 October at the Lincoln Event Centre. Morning tea will be supplied.

The exercise will focus on how emergency services would cope with opening a welfare centre. In the exercise, a civil defence emergency will require that the Lincoln Event Centre be opened as a welfare centre and volunteers will play the role of local residents who have had to leave their homes to take shelter at the centre.

Welfare staff will be testing their registration process, so volunteers will only be needed on site for about half an hour.

If you or your family would like to participate in this exercise, come along from 10am. For more information, contact Ryan O’Rourke on 347 2715.

Living Water Community Open Day You are invited to a Living Water Open Day. Activities include a welcome and speeches from 10am, interactive displays showcasing local plants, fish and insects as well as an oppor tunity to launch the project with students from Lincoln Primary School at the Ararira/Liffey/L1 Creek at the ECAN Depot after lunch.

The open day is on Thursday 23 October from 10am to 12noon at the Lincoln University Dairy Farm (Ellesmere Junction Road, Lincoln). Morning tea and BBQ lunch are provided.

The open day will be followed by a trip into Lincoln township to the head of the Ararira/LI/Liffey River.

You are invited to come to a meeting to gauge interest in a new Lincoln based U3A group. The meeting is at the Habgood Lounge, Lincoln Events Centre, 15 Meijer Drive, Lincoln at 7.30pm on Wednesday 29 October. To register your interest or find out more visit www.u3aEllesmere.org or contact Lena Metcalf on 741 1855 or [email protected] University of the Third Age (U3A) is a learning community organised by and for people who are in active retirement.

Grilled porterhouse steak with rosemary and garlic fried potatoes, green beans and reduced pan juices Serves 4

Ingredients4 Agria potatoes, washed not peeled3 Tbsp Olive oil4 pieces Beef steaks, 180g pieces2 Tbsp Unsalted butter125ml Red wine300ml Olive oil8 Garlic cloves2 sprigs Fresh rosemary400g Green beans, shred-ded

DirectionsBring the potatoes to the boil in a large pot of water. Cook until the skins start to peel and the centre feels tender when tested with a sharp knife - about 30 minutes. Drain the potatoes and let them cool. Do not run them under cold water or they will go soggy! When they’re cool enough to han-dle, peel and dice into 3cm cubes. The potatoes can be done days ahead and kept in the refrigerator. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan and fry the steaks until they are browned. Add the butter, then turn the steaks over and finish cooking to suit your preference, basting with the juices as they cook. Season with salt and pepper.

Remove the steaks to a plate to rest and keep it warm. Pour the wine into the pan and bring to the boil. Stir to loosen any bits of meat that may have stuck to the pan and reduce the juices by half - about 3 min-utes. In a deep frying pan heat the 300ml of olive oil.

Add the potatoes and cook for 5 minutes or until they begin to develop a golden crust. Add the garlic and rosemary and cook for a further 5 minutes. Carefully lift the potatoes out onto paper towels, then season with salt and pepper.

Bring a pot of salted water to the boil and blanch the beans for 2 minutes. Drain and toss in a bowl with the remaining tablespoon of oil and some salt and pepper.

No slowdown in demand for rural property,

farm auctions show

In demand: This property at Hartnells Road, Hororata, sold at auction for $2.63m.

Hartnells Road

Two Canterbury rural properties that sold recently at auction indicate that despite recent dairy payout downgrades,

demand for local farmland remains strong.A dryland Hororata bare block with

Central Plains Water shares sold for over $33,000 per hectare for use in dairy support and a small Oxford dry stock farm sold in excess of $27,000 per hectare.

PGG Wrightson Real Estate auctioneer Athol Earl, sold both properties under the hammer in the first week of October. He said interest in each was keen.

“Both properties attracted considerable enquiry from prospective purchasers with an interest in the dairy sector. This included locals and buyers outside Canterbury.

“For the 79-hectare Hororata property (which is a good square shape with excellent shelter, neighbouring dairy and dairy support blocks and within the Central Plains Water area for stage one delivery of irrigation water), over 30 people attended the auction on October 3. Three bidders chimed in and eventually, two fought it out until 49 bids later, it sold at $2.63 million to a nearby dairy farmer.

“On October 7, the 60-hectare Oxford property attracted a gallery of 20 people. This is a well-set-up smaller farm, presently leased and conservatively farmed as a cattle finishing unit. It features a four-bedroom home in a sheltered garden setting with numerous outbuildings, plus good sheep and cattle yards. On the day, two bidders competed until the farm was sold under the hammer at $1.67 million after 25 bids,” he said.

According to Mr Earl, even in the face of recent indications of a poor short-term outlook for dairy, demand for good Canterbury farms remains keen.

“For some time, we have had a supply-demand imbalance, with plenty of purchasers eager to acquire rural property in Canterbury and few farmers willing to sell. ese two recent sales show that although dairy farmers are facing some challenges with the payout forecast, for those with a longer-term outlook, demand to invest in or consolidate farm ownership has not abated, and if anything, is stronger than ever. Possibly, these two sales will tempt others to come to the market later in the spring or during the summer. ere really is no better time to sell than now,” he said.

green-fingered beginners

For passionate gardeners &

An attractive garden is a dream which requires proper planning and careful nurturing.

To create a beautiful land-scape around your dream home you need basic garden plans to begin with.

These garden plans are gener-ally provided by a professional garden planner or landscape designer.

The garden plans can be of many types.

You can plan for more than just beautifying your garden, your garden plans can also be made to decide the theme of the garden.

Some of the popular garden plans are:

•Garden for full sun •Garden for shade •Corner of grasses •Corner of shrubs •Corner of perennials •Island bed •Privacy garden •Fragrant garden •Vegetable garden

Garden plans give an aesthetic dimension to the garden along with its basic theme.

Colour schemes, quality and variety of plants, height of the

plants, border and flooring are done to give the garden its uniqueness.

The colour scheme of the garden is created blending the different coloured and textured plants.

The plants are also selected according to their height which creates the contour of the gar-den and the skyline of the gar-den.

Garden plans also include the kind of plants to be used accord-ing to the theme chosen.

It is very important that the garden plans are both beautiful and emotionally restorative.

A garden can provide a visual,

perfumed, sound and tactile, sensory experience.

The garden design needs to complement the home and connect the interiors with the external environment, making the most of the available usable areas.

Master planners know that the selection of plants is of equal importance along with their strategic placement on the landscape.

Garden plans also include the planning of the garden arborsor gazebo as well as entertaining areas and garden art and fur-niture.

Modular design and a unique

frame layout can make a simple garden gazebo.

The garden gazebo is the per-fect place to relax or to hold family dinners, and other spe-cial events.

A gazebo in the garden plan ensures a favourite spot to unwind.

GARDENING

TRANQUIL: A gazebo in the garden is a great place to unwind.

WATER FEATURE: If your gar-den includes a pond why not make an island for plants?

Lettuce one of the quickest salad crops to grow. If you are a fan of Caesar salads, plant Cos or little gem varieties. If you prefer large hearting lettuces, shredded into salads topped with highlander mayonnaise, look for Imperial Triumph or Great Lakes. If the frilly red and coloured leaves suit you plant Red Oak, Frisby or Drunken Woman.

Rocket with its spicy peppery flavour, this is a salad green that lasts and lasts. It readily sets seed and pops up again after flowering. The young fresh leaves are the sweetest. A super crop that happily grows in a pot or basket.

SpRing onionS as the name suggests, spring onions can be planted out now. Red, green and Asian varieties are all available; the tips can be harvested as the plants grow, plant in a loose well dug soil or in containers and pots. Both the tops and bottoms can be used; even the roots are tasty, once washed.

Mizuna – probably the speediest of all the salad crops. From planting seedlings to the first harvest it can be a matter of weeks. The critical thing with mizuna is not to let the soil dry out, if it does, within a week a flower head will appear and the leaves will become bitter. Mizuna Red Coral adds a pretty bit of ‘bling’ with its red leaves to salads and sandwiches.

BeetRoot this crop is excellent bang for buck as you can harvest both the leaves and the roots. Sow rows of seeds or plant a punnet or two, the young leaves are perfect additions to salads; the roots can be grated into salads and slaws. It makes a lovely micro green too.

Keep salad crops moist, best to water in the morning or evening, when soil temperatures are cooler. Salad crops are best planted in full sunlight.

Happy Gardening, Rachel Vogan

With long weekends looming, some of those extra hours can easily be filled in by planting up a salad patch. Say goodbye to those smelly, slimy ole salad bags from the supermarket and grow your own at home.

First things first, prepare the soil. You have heard it all before but it is important! Blend in sheep pellets or well rotted manure or good organic compost into existing vegetable beds before planting or sowing seeds. If you are growing in pots or building raised gardens fill them with Veggie Mix from Intelligro.

Your success lies in the soil, you can’t expect tasty fresh salad goodies if you don’t put any time or food into the soil. The old saying feed the soil and it will feed you, certainly applies to the vegetable garden.

If you have a choice, the ideal time of day to plant is dawn or dusk. Granted, that’s not always possible as one isn’t always up when the birds start chirping, however the cooler time of day is less stressful on the seedlings. Water seedlings thoroughly before and after planting, ensuring the soil is prepared before removing plants from the punnets.

GARDENING

BY TOD PALENSKI

I’ve often wondered if I added up the num-ber of hours I spend watering the garden each summer, what the exact total would come to?

I’m sure the answer would surprise me. Imagine what else I could be doing with that time? Enjoying a well-earned drink on the deck springs to mind.

That’s why I like plants and flowers that tend to look after themselves. Like the col-ourful gazania, for example. This Southern-African native prefers conditions that are hot, dry, windy and sunny – the perfect plant for a long New Zealand summer.

Because of this, it’s best to position them in a free-draining area – along the side of your house, near your letterbox or, if you’re lucky enough, outside your beach house.

Gazania will add a splash of summer colour, producing flowers in hot shades of orange, red, yellow and cream – colours that also look stunning in pots. In fact, they’re perfect for the deck as you can leave them to go about the business of flowering, without the need for watering.

Sound like the perfect plant for you? When planting, choose an area with soil

that is well drained, rather than hard and wet. Dig a hole and pop in your seedling. Plant your seedlings quite close together – about 200mm apart - as they don’t tend to spread too far outwards when they grow. It’s also the perfect distance for covering any gaps should any of the plants fail to prosper.

In around six to eight weeks you should be enjoying a flurry of hot, summer colour that will last the whole season. Best admired on the patio with a drink.

Some like it hot – the perfect summer plantCOLOUR: There are several varieties of gazania, they thrive in hot and dry situations.

Quality products from the web to the shed!

My garlic that I planted on the shortest day has started to look sad at the tips. It is in Patio Plus so I thought it would have enough nutrients? Does it need feeding?

For more information, check out our website: www.igro.co.nz or visit our facebook page: www.facebook.com/igro.co.nz

Email to: [email protected] or post your question on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/igro.co.nz

Yellowing at the tips of leaves may be a sign of stress associated with watering either too much or not enough. I see that your garlic is planted in pots. Check that they have enough drain holes, and that they aren’t blocked. The pots may need to be lifted up off the ground to ensure the water can get out. Try to establish a regular watering pattern also. Garlic will start to do more rapid growth now so new leaves will appear and may be quite okay! An extra feed of nutrients will help you to get the most out of your crop. For more information about garlic, have a look in our Gardening Advice section on our website www.igro.co.nz under Planting and Sowing.Congratulations to Jane with your winning question this week. We hope you enjoy your prize pack!

Jane’s garlic looking a bit yellow on the tips.

Garlic is one of the easiest crops to grow and is very handy to have available for cooking. It doesn’t take up too much room, and will grow in pots or containers. Top quality mix is important when planting garlic. What you put in is what you will get out. Make sure that the garlic gets a regular watering, and is in plenty of sunshine.

Grow the classic salad cucumberBY TOD PALENSKI

When I think about what makes a classic summer salad or sandwich, the telegraph cucumber is first to spring to mind.

Subtly sweet, crisp, and refreshing. If that isn’t enough to tempt you, they’re also high in Vitamin C and super hydrating.

If you want to pick yours straight from the garden this summer, rather than fight your way through the skin-tight plastic wrap that so often accompanies the store-bought vari-ety, now’s the time to get planting.

First, grab your telegraph cucumber seed-lings. Look for a warm, sunny and dry spot in your garden.

Dig in some compost or leftover potting mix to the soil, making sure it’s friable or breaks up in your hand. Then, plant your seedlings.

The telegraph likes something to cling on to so, for best results, either place them near a trellis or similar frame, or use a simple stake.

To encourage fruiting, I like to grow mine next to a bee-friendly plant like lavender. This encourages pollination and, subse-quently, fruiting.

If pollination continues to be a problem (by that I mean the flowers fall off but no fruit develops), touch the pollen on each plant with a paintbrush, which will spread the pollen from one flower to the next.

I’ve also been told, though haven’t yet tried, you can do the same with an electric tooth-brush minus the toothbrush head. Magic.

Around 10 to 12 weeks after planting, you should have a plentiful bounty of cylindrical fruit to add a refreshing touch to your sum-mer fare.

REFRESHING: Cucumber likes a warm, dry spot in the garden.

HEALTHY: Telegraph cucumbers are super hydrating.

re with a good book. If you’re considering that new deck, patio, paving or BBQ area, here are a couple of key points that may help you in your planning.

Sun and windHow your house and section orientate to

‘north’ determine where the sun and wind is the greatest. Outdoor spaces are typically best positioned to capture a ernoon sun in a northwest aspect. Careful consideration also needs to be given to ensure you factor in protection from the infamous cooler ‘easterly’ wind that plagues much of Canterbury.

Recently, I have also noticed more of my clients are requesting provision for shade

structures. Quality umbrellas, awnings or shade sails may be good options depending on your budget.

Indoor/Outdoor ow is is more than just a term for real

estate magazines. Well-planned indoor/outdoor ow can create seamless continuity between your indoor and outdoor living. is is particularly relevant when you are planning a space for your outdoor dining as a good connection between your kitchen and outdoor setting can work well.

Architecture e most successful outdoor spaces

are o en ones that have been designed in reference to the house. Analyse the architectural style of your home and then see how these principles can be applied in the landscape. Using the materials of your

house in the built elements of your outdoor areas is a great way of creating a ‘readable’ connection, i.e. a painted plaster nish raised planter that matches the nish of your exterior cladding.

You could also consciously choose to make a contrasting statement with your landscape elements if you are a bit braver.

e above principles must all be considered and applied in a way that suits you and the way you choose to enjoy and use your outdoor areas. e selected plant palette is a great chance for you to express yourself in the garden. Your choices don’t have to be ‘on trend’ and it doesn’t have to appeal to anyone else. With some considered thought and planning, your outdoor spaces will become a true lifestyle asset that you will enjoy for many long hot summer a ernoons and evenings to come.

PropaneThe greatest benefit of using propane is its mobility and ease of use. Propane patio heaters can be set up almost anywhere. They don’t need professional plumbing or installation, and the fuel tank is out of sight, hidden within the unit. While there is no installation costs for propane heaters, the fuel does have the highest cost of use.

Natural GasPatio heaters that run on natural gas have a lower cost of operation than any other patio heaters. They have a constant supply

Safety fi rstPatio heaters have many inbuilt safety features to protect you and your family. Most patio heaters have a tilt shut off valve. Be sure to give adequate space between the patio heater and any combustibles. Always consult the manual before installing your patio heater. For patio heaters between 30,000 and 50,000 BTUs, provide at least 30 inches of clearance above and on all sides of the refl ector and emitter head from combustible materials. Smaller units from 10,000 to 30,000 BTUs need at least 24 inches of clearance above and on all sides of the refl ector and emitter head.

of fuel and there is no need to worry about refilling them. However, as with all natural gas appliances, care must be taken when they are installed and may need to be professionally plumbed.

ElectricElectric patio heaters produce zero emissions themselves and have a fuel cost which lies between propane and natural gas. They may need professional installation depending on the type of voltage and wiring needed. Electric patio heaters operate efficiently, use fuel economically and produce heat effectively.

HEALTH

A THIRD of patients who have surgery to remove cancerous tumours end up with microscopic pieces left behind. These over-looked remnants can lead to the recurrence of cancer after what was thought to have been success-ful surgery.

Two surgeons at the University of Pennsylvania have tried to solve this problem. Their solution: mak-ing tumours glow.

Using a combination of inject-able dyes and high resolution cam-eras, the surgeons found a way to image tumours during surgery and more easily identify their margins. They published their findings in the journal PLoS One.

“Once you get into surgery you’ve only got your eyes and your hands to tell you where the margin of the cancer is,” says David Holt, lead author of the study and professor of surgery at the Penn School of Veterinary Medicine. Tumours could be studied before surgery with MRIs or CT scans, but these images were helpful only to a certain extent, he says.

After an initial study in mice,

Holt used the new imaging tech-nology on eight dogs with natu-rally occurring lung tumours. Holt and his team injected the dogs with indocyanine green, a dye that accumulates in tumours more than in other tissues because of their leaky blood vessels. The dye c emits light in wavelengths that cannot be seen by human eyes. But when the doctors shined a near-infrared light on the tumours during surgery they glowed an “In-credible Hulk green” on computer screens linked to the cameras.

With the help of this real-time image, Holt could make decisions about where to make incisions during surgery on the dogs. The successful dog study led to ap-proval for a human clinical trial run by Sunil Singhal, a co-author on the study and assistant profes-sor of surgery at Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine.

Using the same technology, which he compared to night vision goggles, Singhal examined lung and chest tumours in five human patients and the tumours fluo-resced strongly.

Singhal also used this imaging approach in another study pub-lished in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. In two out of 18 patients with lung cancer, the imaging system helped surgeons identify

cancer in areas that had previously been undetected.

Singhal is already exploring its applications in other cancers, in-cluding breast cancer. He has seven open clinical trials using dyes to

image tumours during surgery. This type of imaging does not

involve radiation, making it safe to use for most patients, even preg-nant women.

But the dye Holt and Singhal used can be detected at depths of only 10mm to 15mm in tissues, leaving deeper areas unexplored.

Also, the dye does not specifical-ly bind to tumour cells so adjacent tissues can also collect dye.

Singhal and Holt plan to use targeted dyes in future studies that are molecularly selective for tu-mour cells as well as continuing to improve their camera technology.

recommend the super nannyapproach of taking the childback to bed over and over, I findthis technique time consumingandmany children see it as agame.I recommend a gentle and

gradual approach, where youcommit to staying with yourchild and enjoying a relaxedbedtime routine together. Overtimework towards herbecoming comfortable andgetting used to settling to sleepwithout you there.Have a quiet wind down after

Ifshe starts to get up, say youwillleave if she does. Over a fewnights you can start to sit on thebed, then next sit on a chair bythe bed. After a week or so youcan try a pop out: say somethinglike, “Mumwill just pop out toget a quick drink, I’ll be back in asecond” and return after about30 seconds. Gradually increasethe length and frequency of thepop outs and your daughter willfall asleep without you there. Also try little “bedtime fairy

Popularity of e-cigarettes levels off inUS

HIT: E-cigarettes can deliver a fix.

A government study in the USshows adults who have triedelectronic cigarettesmay belevelling off.The proportion of adults who

have used e-cigarettes rose fromabout 3 per cent to 8 per centfrom 2010 to 2012. But there wasno significant change last year, says the US Centers for DiseaseControl (CDC) and Preventionstudy. The study’s conclusions seem

to parallel a modest decline ine-cigarette sales during thesame period that have beennoted in analyst reports. The findings come from an

annual survey of thousands ofadults. It has been the CDC’sonly source on e-cigarette trends

since the devices started sellingin the US in late 2006.E-cigarettes are battery-

powered devices that producean odourless vapour thattypically contains nicotine, andsometimes flavourings. They are often described as a

less dangerous alternative toregular cigarettes. But e-cigarettes are not yet

regulated by the federalgovernment, and there hasn’tbeenmuch research on them.“The long-term public health

impact of these products isuncertain,” the study’s leadauthor, Brian King, says. But hecalled the levelling off in adultswho have ever tried e-cigarettes“a positive note.”The study also found the

percentage of adults who aredescribed as current e-cigarettesmokers— that is, they saidthey’d used one at least once inthe previous 30 days— has beenhovering at around 2 per cent.Roughly 75 per cent of

current e-cigarette users saidthey also smoked regularcigarettes— and that hasn’tchangedmuch in four years. That finding “raises serious

questions about whether thisproduct is really helping peoplequit”, saysMatthewMyers, president of the Campaign forTobacco-Free Kids.E-cigarettes come in a range

of shapes and sizes, andMyerssays it’s not clear if the study’sparticipants would have countedthings like “vape pens,”“e-hookahs” and “tanks” ase-cigarettes.The studywas released last

month by themedical journal,Nicotine & Tobacco Research.

Adrug named Perjeta, developed by Swiss giant Rocheto treat an aggressive form ofbreast cancer, has been shownto extend patients’ lives byalmost 16months, researcherssay.Patients who took Perjeta in

combination with chemotherapyand Roche’s older anti-cancerdrug, Herceptin, lived for amedian of 56.5 months, comparedwith 40.8 months forpeople not on Perjeta.Adding Perjeta to treatment

with Herceptin andchemotherapy resulted in thelongest survival observed todate in a clinical study of peoplewith HER2-positivemetastatic

breast cancer, Roche said. The 15.7-month longer

survival timemarked “amagnitude of improvement werarely see in clinical trials inadvanced cancer”.The trial involvedmore than

800 patients with previouslyuntreated HER2-positivemetastatic breast cancer.

HER2 is a protein that makesbreast cancer cells grow. HER2-positive cancermakes up about15 to 20 per cent of breastcancers, and tends to bemoredifficult to treat.Metastatic cancer is one that

BMW’s X5 line-up has become so comprehensive it’s as if there’s a range within a range.

At launch, the company released the new-generation model in two variants, two more have followed and I’m picking there’s bound to be others landing well before its lifecycle ends.

Soon after the new model landed I drove the mid-range 30d, this evaluation focuses on the entry-level model the 25d, one of the two new arrivals.

Interestingly, BMW label the X5 as a sport activity vehicle although I tend to see it as a traditional sport utility vehicle.

Contrary to its nomenclature, the 25d is not a 2.5-litre vehicle either, it has a 2-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine and right from the outset it must be said that it performs admirably.

The X5 is a large vehicle, it is heavy at just over two-tonne yet the engine works without noticeable duress and it offers economy to envy.

According to BMW the 25d will return a six-litre per 100km (46mpg) combined cycle rating.

I wouldn’t dispute that, the fuel

usage readout was constantly listing a 7l/100km (40mpg) figure during my time with the test car with 6l/100km listing instantaneously at 100km/h, the engine working away well relaxed at just 1600rpm.

The latter has a lot to do with the transmission. Like most models arriving here from BMW the 25d is fitted with an eight-speed, paddle-shift automatic transmission, the proximity of ratios doesn’t load the engine, while the constant gearing spread broadens to a tall top gear which benefits fuel usage.

And if you add in a 75-litre tank the distance that can be travelled stretches beyond 1000km between fill-ups.

BMW rates the engine at 168kW and 450Nm, these phenomenal power outputs are also realised at workable points of the rev band, 4400rpm and from 1500rpm respectively.

How the 2-litre unit gets such a strong and broad spread of power comes down to the company’s long experience with turbocharging technology. The boost doesn’t seem punchy but it is enough to glean solid acceleration and comfortable highway speed travel. BMW also claims an 8.2sec time to make 100km/h along with a 220km/h top speed.

The 25d feels strong, it doesn’t have the impetus of its big-engined stablemates but it doesn’t miss by much, I like its response as acceleration is requested, it feels healthy.

I took the test car on the route I

Small engine no problem in X5

BMW X5: SUV with car-like comfort.

MOTORING

normally reserve for SUVs, it incorporates a short undulating cross-country track.

The weather was perfect to test BMW’s X-drive four-wheel-drive system, a little bit of light rain and greasy conditions underfoot. It was bad enough so that the X5 got too dirty but it was damp enough to test traction.

I can report that the 25d puts power to ground well, the four-wheel fully independent suspension soaks up the bumps, and with 210mm of ground clearance confidence is high when mounds are presented.

On road the 25d is the capable SUV we would expect from BMW. That’s something I remarked on in my previous evaluation, it has a glorious ride and travels smoothly and quietly at open road speed, well at all speeds really.

When corners are presented it has balance and poise not always found in a tall vehicle.

The suspension works to arrest gravitational force while steerage is precise with accurate turn-in.

If extra lock is needed in a corner there is strong feel as to how the tyres are behaving, the handling balance without compromising comfort has been engineered into the chassis.

At 4.8m the X5 sits well towards the large SUV category, yet its entry level price – $112,500 – is competitive given that there is a lot of kit on the car and it has performance and ability in all conditions.

It’s been a few years since I’ve been on the ski-field, but the last time I was there were several X5s in the car park which would indicate its drive system is well up to

purpose. X-Drive is a brand which BMW is

incorporating increasingly throughout their line-up and I would rate as good as the high profile system in Range Rover/Land-Rover and Jeep.

Inside, the X5 is plush and well appointed. In a way the interior could be described as minimalist, but deep within the operating systems are functions which make driving safe as well as pleasurable.

Most systems are operated by central dial which BMW call i-Drive.

It is simplistic and intuitive and allows the user to take command of the satellite navigation, communication and infotainment systems, and air conditioning

The test car was pretty much standard trim, although that does include leather. And sitting near the luxury car bracket it doesn’t miss out on much in terms of fitment.

The X5 is a competent wagon which has established itself competitively in the SUV market. If I was a buyer I would certainly consider the baby of the bunch. It is honest, up to task and ever-so easy on the wallet come fill-up time.

Price: BMW X5 25d, $112,500.Dimensions: Length, 4853mm; width, 1932mm; height, 1752mm.Configuration: Four-cylinder longitudinal, four-wheel-drive, 1995cc, 168kW, 450Nm, eight-speed automatic.Performance: 0-100km/h, 8.2sec; maxi-mum speed, 220km/h.

Great remuneration AND career opportunity!

If you’re hard working, if you enjoy work that’s mentally stimulating, and if you want to join an organisation that is going places, this is a success story that you need to know about.

You might know the name Synlait, an innovative dairy processing company in Canterbury. What you might not know about Synlait, is that we’re different to other Milk companies. So good are our products that over 50 countries are buying what it is we have to offer. What’s more, our success is starting to be talked about here at home - recently Synlait was listed on the NZSX, and picked up two very prestigious business awards.

With $165m invested in our continued expansion, we need the right people to join us in our state-of-the-art spray dryer and canning line, and to share our journey. We’re looking for people with:

Vision If you can look into the future and see how far we can go, then we want you.

Talent We need people who naturally do things well, and who enjoy success.

Drive The work can be hard, so we want people with the drive to see the job through.

Ambition We want you to reach your potential with us. We can put your career on the fast track.

Integrity We need people who are open, honest & trust worthy who place a high priority in their team environment & team commitment.

If you enjoy shift work, if you like working alongside like-minded people, and if you don’t mind an easy commute to a job where you’re challenged both mentally and physically, then we would like you to share in our story of success.

Visit Synlait.com and click on careers, today.
