Self Service Kiosk – For Item Check-outs in the Library
Washoe County Library System (WCLS) started looking at open source self-service kiosks when we realized our current technology was financially unsustainable. We needed a less expensive alternative.
After a little self discovery we were on our way to creating what has now become our technological standard self-check for WCLS.
• An understanding of the software was necessary and accomplished in short order• Deployed a cardboard mock up with some success• Feedback - librarians are generous with telling you what they think…about anything
Self Service Kiosk – For Item Check-outs in the Library
• Finding funds to bring this project to fruition• Grant writer is very good and knows the Reno community
• LSTA (Library Services Technology Act)• Friends of Washoe County Library • John Ben Snow Memorial Trust• Local financial resources and some of our own moneys,
• Able to produce 22 self checks (10 purchased outside of grant with our own money) • Within two months we began distributing to the branches. • Within 6 months we had all of our self-checks in place
Items needed for self check build-out:
• Chassis –• Thin Clients— wired and wireless forms running a reduced version of XP• Touch Screen Monitors—ELO• Scanners—Honeywell Fusion• Receipt Printer—Epson TM 88V• Magnets—for tattle-tail signature removal
