Self Reflection Blog #3
The first key takeaway I had the past two weeks is how important it is to provide your
employees with good performance reviews. Often times I hear people say “if you hear no
news then it is good news” and I think when it comes to your performance that is false. If
a manager is not giving their managers performance reviews or even if they are doing
them half way without any diligence, then they are robbing you from your potential
growth. Feedback is very essential when it comes to improving and making any
necessary changes to become even more successful.
During the chapter about performance reviews I learned what key things should
be included in it. Considering my career path is either in store leadership or in HR it is
very important I know how to write a good PR. I want my employees to walk out
knowing their strengths and weaknesses. Most importantly I want my employees to feel
like we have a game plan in place for them to improve on their areas of opportunity. I
also want them to know what to be doing in the following year to have an even more
successful year. Learning about performance reviews well help me to create a great
diverse working environment because my employees will know that I am behind them
100%. They will know that I want them to succeed and that together we can create a
successful work environment.
The second takeaway I had was how important it is to not create such personal
relationships with your employees. Being a manager at 21 is hard because a lot of people
you are leading are around your age and you want to hangout with them. Honestly, at
times it does indeed get lonely at the top. However, through the discussion we had on this
I learned how truly important it is to prevent this from happening.
Because of what I learned I know that I won’t develop close personal
relationships with my employees because it is not fair to everyone else. I also believe that
if you have a close friendship with your employees it is harder to hold them accountable
because you are worried about ruining that relationship. I will use what I have learned to
create an environment that is fair and consistent. All my employees will know that I hold
everyone to the same level.
