WARRANTY

Valmetal Incorporated (Valmetal) warrants new Self propelled bedding chopper to be free from defects in materialand workmanship, under normal use and service. Obligation under this warranty shall extend for a period of 1 year(12 months) following the date of delivery to the original purchaser and shall be limited to replacement or repair atValmetal’s choice of any parts found to be defective upon inspection by Valmetal.

WARRANTY CLAIMSThe purchaser claiming under this warranty shall submit a warranty claim in the prescribed form to Valmetal or anAuthorized Dealer, for inspection by an authorized company representative.

LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITYThis warranty is expressly in lieu of all other warranties expressed or implied and all other obligations or liabilities onValmetal’s part of any kind or character, including liabilities for alleged representations or negligence. We neitherassume nor authorize any other person to assume on our behalf, any liability in connection with the subsequent saleof the Bedding chopper.

This warranty shall not apply to any Bedding chopper which has been altered outside the factory in any way if,according to Valmetal, the alterations affected the Bedding chopper operation and reliability, or if the Chopper hasbeen subject to misuse or accident.

This warranty does not apply to parts that are under warranty by the original manufacturer and for which service canbe obtained directly through authorized service centers. No warranty is extended to regular service items such asknives, v-belts, lubricants, paint and the like.

OPERATOR’S MANUALThe Purchaser acknowledges having received training on safe operation of the Self propelled bedding chopper andfurther acknowledges that Valmetal does not assume any liability resulting from the operation of the Bedding chopperin any manner other than described in the Operator’s Manual supplied at the time of purchase.

SECTION 1 INTRODUCTIONCongratulations on your choice of a ValMetal Self propelled bedding chopper to complement your farmingoperation. This equipment has been designed and manufactured to meet the needs of a discerning livestockindustry.

Safe, efficient and trouble free operation of your ValMetal Bedding chopper requires that you and anyoneelse who will be operating or maintaining the Chopper, read and understand the Safety, Operation andMaintenance informations contained in the Operator's Manual.

This manual covers the Models 01A99-0200 manufactured by ValMetal.

Keep this manual handy for frequent reference and to pass on to new operators or owners. Call yourValMetal Dealer or Distributor if you need assistance or information.

OPERATOR ORIENTATION - The directions left, right, front and rear, as mentioned throughout this manual,are as seen from behind the guide bar and facing in the direction of the Chopper.

IMPORTANT

YOU are responsible for the SAFE operation andmaintenance of your ValMetal Self propelled beddingchopper. YOU must ensure that you and anyoneelse who is going to operate, maintain or workaround the machine be familiar with the operatingand maintenance procedures and related SAFETYinformation contained in this manual.

Remember, YOU are the key to safety. Good safetypractices not only protect you but also the peoplearound you. Make these practices a working part ofyour safety program. Be certain that EVERYONEoperating this equipment is familiar with the recom-mended operating and maintenance procedures andfollows all the safety precautions. Most accidentscan be prevented. Do not risk injury or death byignoring good safety practices.

Bedding chopper owners must give operatinginstructions to operators or employees before allow-ing them to operate the machine, and at least annu-ally thereafter per OSHA regulation 1928.57.

The most important safety device on this equipmentis a SAFE operator. It is the operator's responsibilityto read and understand ALL Safety and Operatinginstructions in the manual and to follow these. Allaccidents can be avoided.

A person who has not read and understood all oper-ating and safety instructions is not qualified to oper-ate the machine. An untrained operator exposeshimself and bystanders to possible serious injury ordeath.

Do not modify the equipment in any way.Unauthorized modification may impair the functionand/or safety and could affect the Iife of the machine.

2.1 GENERAL SAFETY

1 . Read and understand the Operator's Manual andall safety signs before operating, maintaining oradjusting the Bedding chopper.

2. Have a first-aid kit availablefor use should the need arise and know how to use it.

3. Have a fire extinguisheravailable for use shouldthe need arise and know how to use it.

4. Wear appropriate protective gear. This listincludes but is not limited to:- A hard hat- Protective shoes with slip resistant soles- Protective glasses or goggles- Heavy gloves- Wet weather gear- Hearing protection- Respirator or filter mask

5. Install and secure all guards before starting.

6. Wear appropriate ear protection for prolonged exposure to excessivenoise.

7. Do not allow riders.

8. Release direction/speed lever, disengage tubrotation control, raise rotor grate, disengagerotor, stop engine, remove ignition wire and waitfor all moving parts to stop before servicing,maintaining, adjusting, repairing or unplugging.

9. Clear the area of people, especially small chil-dren, before starting the unit.

10. Review safety related items annually with all per-sonnel who will be operating or maintaining theBedding chopper.

2.2 OPERATING SAFETY

1. Read and understand the Operator's Manual andall safety signs before operating, servicing,adjusting, repairing, unplugging or filling.

2. Do not allow riders.

3. Install and secure all guards and shields beforestarting or operating.

4. Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away frommoving parts.

5. Never climb into the Chopper tub or place handsin any opening when the engine is running.

6. Release direction/speed lever, disengage tubrotation control, raise rotor grate, disengagerotor, stop engine, remove ignition wire and waitfor all moving parts to stop before servicing,maintaining, adjusting, repairing or unplugging.

7. Place all controls in neutral before starting.

8. Operate machine only while standing behingguiding bar.

9. Clear the area of bystanders, especially smallchildren, before starting.

10. Allow engine to cool for 5 minutes before refuel-ing.

11. Do not smoke while refueling. Do not allow oth-ers to smoke.

12. Never operate the machine inside a closed build-ing unless it has adequate ventilation.

13. Do not reach into tub while the engine is runningeven if rotor is not activated.

14. Make sure all hydraulic components are tight, notdamaged and free of leaks before using.

15. Review safety instructions with all operatorsannually.

2.3 MAINTENANCE SAFETY

1. Follow ALL the operating, maintenance and safe-ty information in the manual.

2. Support the machine with blocks or safety standswhen changing tires or working beneath it.

3. Release direction/speed lever, disengage tubrotation control, raise rotor grate, disengagerotor, stop engine, remove ignition wire and waitfor all moving parts to stop before servicing,maintaining, adjusting, repairing or unplugging.

4. Follow good Shop Practices- Keep service area clean and dry.

- Be sure electrical outlets and tools are properly grounded

- Use adequate light for the job at hand

5. Remove wire from spark plug before working onmachine.

6. Do not adjust drive belts when the engine is run-ning.

7. Make sure all guards and access doors are inplace and properly secured when maintenancework is completed.

8. Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away frommoving and/or rotating parts.

9. Never wear ill-fitting, baggy or frayed clothingwhen working around or on any of the drive sys-tem components.

10. Clear the area of bystanders, especially smallchildren, when carrying out any maintenance andrepairs or making any adjustments.

11. Be careful when working around or maintaininghigh-pressure hydraulic system. Wear propereye and hand protection when searching for ahigh-pressure hydraulic leak. Use a piece ofwood or cardboard as a back-stop when search-ing for a pin hole leak in a hose or steel line.

12. Seek immediate medical attention if a high-pres-sure stream of hydraulic fluid pierces the skin, astoxic reaction and infection could develop.

13. Wear heavy canvas or leather gloves whenworking with the rotor or knives.

2.4 HYDRAULIC SAFETY

1. Make sure that all components in the hydraulicsystem are kept in good condition and are clean.

2. Replace any worn, cut, abraded, flattened orcrimped hoses and steel lines.

3. Before applying pressure to the system, makesure all components are tight and that lines,hoses and couplings are not damaged.

4. Do not attempt any makeshift repairs to thehydraulic lines, fittings or hoses by using tape,clamps or cements. The hydraulic system oper-ates under extremely high-pressure. Suchrepairs will fail suddenly and create a hazardousand unsafe condition.

5. Wear proper hand and eyeprotection when searching for a high pressure hydraulic leak. Use a piece of wood orcardboard as a backstopinstead of hands to isolate and identify a leak.

6. If injured by a concentrated high-pressure streamof hydraulic fluid, seek medical attention immedi-ately. Serious infection or toxic reaction candevelop from hydraulic fluid piercing the skin sur-face.

2.5 BATTERY SAFETY

1. Keep all sparks and flames away from batteries,as gas given off by electrolyte is explosive.

2. Avoid contact with battery electrolyte; wash offany spilled electrolyte immediately.

3. Wear safety glasses when working near batter-ies.

4. Do not tip batteries more than 45 degrees toavoid electrolyte loss.

5. To avoid injury from sparks or short circuit, dis-connect battery ground cable before servicingany part of electrical system.

2.6 TIRE SAFETY

1. Failure to follow proper procedures when mount-ing a tire on a wheel or rim can produce anexplosion which may result in serious injury ordeath.

2. Do not attempt to mount a tire unless you havethe proper equipment and experience to do thejob.

3. Have a qualified tire dealer or repair service per-form required tire maintenance.

2.7 REFUELING SAFETY

1. Handle fuel with care. It is highly flammable.

2. Allow engine to cool for 5 minutes before refuel-ing. Clean up spilled fuel before restartingengine.

3. Do not refuel the machine while smoking or whennear open flame or sparks.

4. Fill fuel tank outdoors.

5. Prevent fires by keeping machine clean of accu-mulated trash, grease or debris.

2.8 STORAGE SAFETY

1. Store The Chopper on a firm, level surface.

2. Store the Chopper in an area away from humanactivity.

3. Do not permit children to play on or around thestored machine.

4. Make sure the unit is sitting, or blocked up firmand solid and will not tip or sink into a soft area.

5. Cover with a weather-proof tarpaulin and tiedown securely.

HIGH-PRESSURE FLUIDE HAZARD

Relieve pressure on systeme before repairing or adjusting.

Wear proper hand and eye protection when searching for leaks. Use wood or cardboard instead of hands.

Keep all compenents in good repair.

2.9 SAFETY DECALS

1. Keep safety decals and signs clean and readableat all times.

2. Replace safety decals and signs that are missingor have become illegible.

3. Replaced parts that displayed a safety signshould also display the current sign.

4. Safety decals or signs are available from yourDealer Parts Department or the factory.

How to install Safety DecaIs :

* Be sure that the installation area is clean anddry.

* Decide on the exact position before you removethe backing paper.

* Remove the smallest portion of the split backingpaper.

* Align the decal over the specified area and care-fully press the small portion with the exposedsticky backing in place.

* Slowly peel back the remaining paper and care-fully smooth the remaining portion of the decal inplace.

* Small air pockets can be pierced with a pin andsmoothed out using the piece of decal backingpaper.

2.10 SIGN-OFF FORM

ValMetal inc. follows the general Safety Standards specified by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Anyone who will be operating and/or main-taining the Self propelled bedding chopper must read and clearly understand ALL Safety, Operating andMaintenance information presented in this manual.

Do not operate or allow anyone else to operate this equipment until such information has been reviewed.Annually review this information.

Make these periodic reviews of SAFETY and OPERATION a standard practice for all of your equipment.We feel that an untrained operator is unqualified to operate this machine.

A sign-off sheet is provided for your record keeping to show that all personnel who will be working with theequipment have read and understand the information in the Operator's Manual and have been instructed inthe operation of the equipment.

4.1 TO THE NEW OPERATOR OR OWNER

It is the responsibility of the owner or operator toread this manual and to train all other operatorsbefore they start working with the machine.Follow all safety instructions exactly. Safety iseveryone's business. By following recommendedprocedures, a safe working environments is pro-vided for the operator, bystanders and the areaaround the worksite. Untrained operators are notqualified to operate this machine.

Many features incorporated into this machine are theresult of suggestions made by customers like you.Read this manual carefully to learn how to operate themachine safely and how to set it to provide maximumefficiency. By following the operating instructions inconjunction with a good maintenance program, yourSelf propelled bedding chopper will provide manyyears of trouble-free service.

SECTION 4 OPERATION

OPERATING SAFETY

1. Read and understand the Operator's Manual andall safety signs before operating, servicing, adjust-ing, repairing, unplugging or filling.

2. The engagement / disengagement of the rotorrotation is made by tensionning or loosening thetwo rotor v-belts. Be very carefull, this is not apositive clutch system and it might happen thatthe rotor continue to turn even when the tensionon the belts is released and the belts are loose.Never reach into the tub or inside the rotor hous-ing while motor is running. Always stop engineand wait for all moving parts to stop before servic-ing, adjusting or unplugging.

3. Do not allow riders.

4. Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away frommoving parts.

5. Do not smoke when refueling.

6. Never operate the machine inside a closed build-ing unless there is adequate ventilation.

7. Clear the area of bystanders, especially smallchildren, before starting.

4.3 BREAK-IN

Although there are no operational restrictions on themachine when used for the first time, it is recom-mended that the following mechanical items bechecked:

A. Before starting:

1. Read the Operators Manual and all safety decal before starting.

B. After operating for 1 hour:

1. Retorque all wheel bolts and axle nuts.

2. Check the air pressure in the tires. Add ifrequired.

3. Check alignment of the pulleys. Align as required.

4. Retorque all other fasteners and hardware.

C. After operating for 10 hours:

1. Repeat steps 1 through 4 listed before. (Section B).

2. Check tension of all belts. Adjust if required.

3. Change the engine oil.

4. Then go to the normal service schedule as defined in the Maintenance section.

4.4 PRE-OPERATION CHECKLIST

Efficient and safe operation of the ValMetal Self pro-pelled bedding chopper requires that each operatorreads and understands the operating procedures andall related safety precautions outlined in this section.A pre-operation checklist is provided for the operator.It is important to follow this checklist in order to ensurepersonal safety and the good mechanical condition ofthe machine.

Before operating the Bedding chopper and each timethereafter, the following areas should be checked off:

1. Lubricate the machine according to the scheduleoutlined in the Maintenance Section.

2. Check engine oil level. Add as required.

3. Check hydraulic fluid level. Add as required.

4. Check tension and alignment of all belts and pul-leys. Tension or align as required.

5. Check that all bearings turn freely. Replace anythat are rough or siezed.

6. Check the grate and rotor. Remove any twine,wire or other material that has become entan-gled.

7. Check the condition of the knives on the rotor.Repair or replace any bent or broken sections.

8. Ensure that the tires are inflated to the specifiedpressure.

9. Check that all hydraulic fittings and connectionsare tight and in good condition.

10. Be sure all guards and shields are in place,secured and functioning as intended.

11. Clean all straw, chaff and debris from machine.

4.5 CONTROLS

All controls are conveniently positioned next towhere the operator would stand when running themachine. Review this section to familiarize yourselfwith the location and function of each control.

1. Tub Rotation Control: Located on the left cor-ner of the machine. Move the control lever tothe left in a clockwise motion to engage the tubrotation drive. Move the control right in acounter-clockwise direction to disengage thedrive.

2. Grate Height Control: Two intermeshinglevers, located in the center next to the rotatingtub, control the height of the grate over theknives. Position the levers in their lowest slot tolift the grate and stop the shredding process.Position the levers in their top slot to lower thegrate to allow the material in the tub into theknives for shredding.

3. Rotor Drive Control: The control lever toengage the rotor drive is located on the center ofthe frame under the guide bar. Move the leverup to engage the rotor drive. Move the leverdown to disengage the drive.

4. Gas engine Controls: (see figure 5)

A. Engine Stop Switch: Turn the switch clock-wise to turn the engine ON. Turn the switch counter-clockwise to turn the engine OFF.

B. Fuel Shut Off: Mover the lower sliding controlto the left to shut off the fuel supply to the engine. Move the lever to the right to open the fuel supply.

IMPORTANT!Always shut off fuel valve after turning off engine

CAUTION

C. Choke: Move the top sliding control to the left to close the choke for starting when engine is cold. Move the control to the right as engine warms to open choke.

D. Throttle: Move the throttle to the right to runthe engine at low RPM. Move the control to the left to increase engine RPM.

E. Rope Pull for starting: Located on right side of engine flywheel. Pull sharply when startingengine.

6. Material Outlet Doors: Two outlet doors on theleft side control the flow of material out of themachine. The door is normally raised all theway to allow 1/2 the material to be distributedover a wide area. The other door is opened partway to distribute 1/2 the material next to themachine. See figures 6 and 10.

4. Direction/Speed Control: A self-containedhydrostatic system controls the speed and direc-tion of the Bedding chopper. A lever, located onthe guide bar control the hydrostatic system.

a. Pressing the lever forward produces a for-ward motion. Pressing it further increases forward speed.

b. Pressing the lever backward produces a reverse direction. Pressing it further increa-ses the speed in reverse.

4.6 OPERATING

The Valmetal Self propelled bedding chopper canquickly and efficiently shred compacted bulk materialto distribute and spred evenly over a surface. Whenusing the machine, follow these procedures:

IMPORTANT!New operators or people who have not operated theunit for a period of time should review the location andfunction of all controls before starting. It is recom-mended that they move the machine to a large openarea and practice operating. This practice will famil-iarize them with the controls of the machine.

1. Clear the area of bystanders, especially smallchildren, before starting.

2. Review and follow the Pre-Operation Checklist(see Section 4.4).

3. Do not operate the machine in a closed buildingunless there is adequate ventilation.

4. Be sure that all guards and access doors are inplace and secured before starting.

5. Do not climb into the tub or place hands in anyopening when the engine is running.

6. Be sure that the tub rotation and knife drive con-trols are disengaged and the tub grate is in itshighest position.

7. Place a bale into the tub (figure 8 and 9).

8. Remove the strings and dispose of them awayfrom the machine and working area.

9. If required, load up to 2 other bales.

10. Starting engine

a. Turn the switch to the ON position.

b. Open the fuel supply valve.

c. Move the throttle into its mid-range position.

d. Close the choke if the engine is cold or if theunit has not been run for a while.

e. Pull sharply on the starter rope to start the engine or turn the ignition switch to the START position.

f. Gradually open the choke as the engine warms to operating temperature.

g. Open the throttle to provide maximum powerand RPM when operating.

11. Use the direction/speed lever and maneuver themachine into position.

Attention: Use care when driving over ruts,bumps or rough ground. Since the machine hasa 3 point stance, it can tip rather easily if travellingtoo fast. Drive slow!Do not drive the machine across a slope. Alwaysdrive directly up or down to prevent tipping.

WARNING

Never attempt to remove strings while theengine is running. If the strings get caught inthe knives, you could easily be pulled into the

tub before you can let go!

12. Open a material outlet door (figure 12) 1/2 wayand the other all the way open. Adjust them togive the required distribution pattern and cover-age.

13. Move the knife control lever up to engage theknife drive.

14. Set the grate control levers to give the desiredmaterial feed rate. It is recommended that a slowfeed rate be used to provide good control over theshredding and distributing of material.

15. Engage the tub rotation control. The vanes insidethe tub will turn the bale and feed the material intothe rotating knives. (figure 11)

16. Move the machine past the area to be covered.

17. By varying the material feed rate and how fast theoperator moves the machine, a thick or thin layerof bedding can be distributed. With a little prac-tice, the operator will quickly learn what rates givethe best coverage.

18. At the highest feed rate, the machine can shredand distribute a bale in about a minute. Be sure you are aware of how thick you wish to distribute.This machine can lay down a thick layer veryquickly.

19. When the bales in the tub are used up, place allcontrols in neutral, raise the grate and shut off theengine.

20. Add other bales into the tub.

21. Repeat steps 6 through 19 to distribute the bale.

4.7 STORAGE

4.7.1 PLACING IN STORAGE

After the season's use or when the machine will notbe used for period of time, completely inspect allmajor systems of the Bedding chopper. Replace orrepair any worn or damaged components to preventany unnecessary down time at the beginning of nextseason.

Follow this procedure before storing:

1. Remove all material from the machine.

2. Open the material outlet doors.

3. Thoroughly wash the machine using a water hoseor a pressure washer to remove all dirt, mud,manure, debris or residue.

4. Inspect all rotating parts for entangled material.Remove all entangled materials such as twine,wire, etc.

5. Check the condition of the belts and pulleys.Replace or adjust as required.

6. Check the condition of knives. Repair or replaceany bent or broken sections.

7. Inspect the hydraulic system for leaks or loose fit-tings. Tighten as required.

8. Lubricate all grease fittings with one shot ofgrease to displace any residual moisture.

9. Run the machine at low idle for 1 minute to dis-tribute the lubricants to all surfaces.

10. Touch up all paint nicks and scratches to preventrusting.

11. Block up the machine to take the load off the tires.If the unit is stored outside and exposed to sun-shine, it is recommended that the tires beremoved and stored inside.

12. Disconnect the spark plug wire.

13. Remove the battery (electric start option) andstore it in a cool and dry area on wooden blocksor on a wooden pallet. Charge it monthly to main-tain an adequate charge.

14. It is best to store the machine inside. If that is notpossible, cover with a waterproof tarpaulin and tiedown securely.

15. Store in an area away from human activity.

16. Do not allow children to play around the storedunit.

4.7.2 REMOVING FROM STORAGE

When removing the machine from storage, follow thisprocedure:

1. Remove the tarpaulin if covered.

2. Install the wheels if they were removed.

3. Remove blocks from frame if supported.

4. Install and connect the battery (electric startoption).

5. Connect the spark plug wire.

6. Review and follow the Pre-Operation Checklist(Section 4.4).

If the machine has been stored for more than 6months, warm the engine by running it for 2 - 3 min-utes and drain the oil. Change the oil while the oil iswarm to remove any condensation. Refer toMaintenance Section.

STORAGE SAFETY

1. Store the machine in an area away fromhuman activity.

2. Do not allow children to play around thestored unit.

3. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug.

5.1 SERVICE

5.1.1 FUEL, FLUIDS AND LUBRICANTS

1. GreaseUse an SAE multi-purpose high temperaturegrease with extreme pressure (EP) performance.Also acceptable is an SAE multi-purpose lithiumbase grease.

2. FuelUse a regular unleaded gas for all operating con-ditions. (1.6 US gal or 6.1 liters capacity).

3. Engine Oil and Air CleanerUse a typical multi-viscosity motor oil for all oper-ating conditions (SAE 10W30). Consult enginemanual for operating in cold temperatures (1.1US quart or 1.1 liter capacity crankcase). 80 ccoil capacity in air cleaner (if epuiped).

4. Storing LubricantsYour machine can operate at top efficiency onlyif clean lubricants are used. Use clean contain-ers to handle all lubricants. Store them in anarea protected from dust, moisture and othercontaminants.

5.1.2 GREASING

Refer to Section 5.1.1 for recommended grease.Use the Maintenance Checklist provided to keep arecord of all scheduled maintenance.

1. Use only a hand-held grease gun for all greas-ing. Air powered greasing systems can damagethe seals on bearings and lead to early bearingfailure.

2. Do not give sealed bearings more than 1 shot ofgrease every 3 months.

MAINTENANCE SAFETY

1. Follow ALL the operating, maintenance andsafety information in the manual.

2. The engagement / disengagement of the rotorrotation is made by tensionning or looseningthe two rotor v-belts. 4. Release direction/speed lever, disengage tubrotation control, raise rotor grate, disengagerotor, stop engine, remove ignition wire andwait for all moving parts to stop before servic-ing, maintaining, adjusting, repairing or unplug-ging.

5. Do not adjust drive belts when the engine isrunning.

6. Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away frommoving parts.

7. Make sure that all guards and access doorsare closed and secured before operating orservicing the Bedding chopper.

8. Never wear ill-fitting, baggy or frayed clothingwhen working around or on any of the drivesystem components.

9. Wear heavy canvas or leather gloves whenworking with the rotor or knives.

10. Be careful when working around a high-pres-sure hydraulic system. Wear proper eye andhand protection when searching for leak. Usea piece of wood or cardboard as a back-dropwhen searching for leaks.

11. Seek immediate attention if hydraulic fluid pen-etrates the skin as toxic reaction and infectioncould develop.

5.1.3 SERVICING INTERVALS

5.2 MAINTENANCE

5.2.1 CHANGING ENGINE OIL

1. Review the Operator's Manual for the engine.

2. Allow the engine to cool before changing oil. Hotoil can cause burns if it contacts exposed skin.

3. Be sure the spark plug wire is removed from thespark plug.

4. Place a 2 quart pan under the drain plug.

5. Remove the drain plug and allow oil to drain for10 minutes.

6. Install the engine drain plug.

7. Dispose of the oil in an approved container.

8. Add 1 quart US (1 liter) of SAE 10W30 motor oil.

9. Run the engine for 1 minute and check for leaks.

10. Check engine oil level. Top up as required. Theoil should come to the top of the filler neck. Besure the engine is level.

NOTE!Always use genuine ValMetal replacement parts to

insure proper oil filtration.

5.2.2 CLEANING ENGINE AND COMPARTMENT

Dirt, dust and trash can build up in the engine com-partment. Use a high-pressure air hose to keep theengine and compartment clean. Clean the air intakelouvres as required to insure that a free flow of out-side air is maintained to the engine. Blow out thecompartment annually or more often if operating invery dirty conditions.

A clean engine runs better, stays cool and elimi-nates chances of fire.

5.2.3 TUB ROTATION DRIVE

5.2.3.1 BELT TIGHTENINGWhen the tub rotation drive is engaged, an idler ismoved into position to tighten the belt and transmitpower. As the belt wears and stretches, it will benecessary to move the belt adjuster pulley to main-tain proper tension. To set belt tension, follow thisprocedure:

1. Clear the area of bystanders, especially children.

2. Stop engine, shut off fuel supply lever, removeignition key (electric start models), disengage dri-ves and wait for all moving parts to stop.

3. Engage the tub rotation drive control.

4. Check the tension of the belt by applying a smallforce to the center of the belt span. It shoulddeflect from 1/2 to 1 inch (12 to 25 mm) in eitherdirection.

5. If the belt deflection is greater than 1 inch (25mm), the idler should be adjusted to providemore movement.

6. Turn the turnbuckle on the control lever to pro-vide more movement on the idler pulley.

7. Recheck the belt tension. If the turnbuckle doesnot provide sufficient adjustment to tighten thebelt, the belt will have to be replaced.

5.2.3.2 BELT REPLACEMENT

To replace the belt, follow this procedure:

1. Clear the area of bystanders, especially smallchildren.

2. Stop engine, shut off fuel supply lever, removeignition key (electric start models), disengage alldrives and wait for all moving parts to stop.

3. Loosen the bolts holding the rear tub guidewheels.

4. Slide the tub guide wheels back in their slots.

IMPORTANT! NEVER LOOSEN THE FRONT TUB GUIDE WHEELS!

5. Slide the belt down the lower edge of the tub andraise the tub to slide the belt under it.

6. Slip the belt out from around the gearbox and thetightener pulley.

7. Remove the bolt holding the grate height controlin position (fig. 24 on next page).

8. V-belt is now free and can be replaced.

9. Proceed backward to install a new belt.

10. Tighten the grate height control bolt.

11. Tighten the rear tub guide wheels.

12. Adjust the turnbuckle to provide the required belttension.

13. Check the belt tension after running for 10 hours.

5.2.4.2 BELTS REPLACEMENT

To replace the belts, follow this procedure

1. Clear the area of bystanders, especially smallchildren.

2. Stop engine, shut off fuel supply lever, removeignition key (electric start models), disengage alldrives and wait for all moving parts to stop.

3. Move the turnbuckle until the idler pulley is in itshighest position.

4. Loosen speed reducer mount holding bolts andremove all rotor V-belts.

5. Install the new belts and reinstall the reducer v-belt

6. Tension and tighten reducer mount bolts.

7. Adjust the turnbuckles to give the required belttension.

8. After 10 hours of running, check the belts ten-sion. Adjust as required.

5.3 REPAIRS

IMPORTANT!During normal operation, the only component thatnormally will require replacement is the knife assem-bly on the shredding rotor. Read this section careful-ly before attempting to remove the rotor for repair.Do not attempt to remove the rivets to change ablade on a disc, you must replace the entire disc.

5.3.1 KNIFE REPLACEMENT

To replace a knife disc, follow this procedure:

1. Clear the area of bystanders, especially smallchildren.

2. Be sure the fuel valve is OFF, the spark plugwire is disconnected and all drives are in neutral.

3. Loosen tub belt guard bolts and slide guardbackward to clear the way for the tub and disen-gage the tub V-belt (fig. 26).

4. Remove V-belt from reducer pulley

5. Remove the 2 bolts securing the hinged cover tothe main housing and flip over the hinged coverand tub to gain access to the rotor (fig. 27).

6. Place a block of wood between the housing andthe knives to prevent the rotor from turning whenloosening the rotor clamping nut. Use thewrench provided with the machine to loosen theclamping nut (fig. 28).

7. Remove rotor V-belts, unfasten and take outbearing bolts.

8. Remove the rotor from the machine and place iton a wooden surface to change knife discs.

1. Always wear heavy canvas or leather gloveswhen working with the knives on the rotor.

2. Knives are sharp and can give serious cuts.

3. Never use your hands to keep the rotor fromturning.

9. When replacing a knife disc, remove the discwith the damaged knife. Install a new disc usingonly genuine ValMetal replacement parts.

10. When reversing cutting edges of the knife discs,always discard the discs with chipped, bent orbroken knife. Replace with new original discs.

IMPORTANT!Use only genuine ValMetal parts for all repairs tothe machine. The rotor is made with special bal-anced knife discs and spacers. Non-genuinediscs or knives might create excessive vibrationand/or hit other parts of the machine.

11. Proceed backward, step by step to reinstall.Place the roror in the machine.

12. Place a block of wood between the knives andthe bottom of the machine to keep the rotor fromturning (fig. 29). Tighten the clamping nut usingthe wrench supplied. Be sure that all discs andspacers seat properly.

13. Lower the hinged cover with tub in position andsecure the 2 bolts. Be sure the grate movesfreely and verify the drive pulleys alignment.

14. Place the belt on the reducer pulley and aroundthe tub.

15. Check all belts tension and replace all removedbelt guards.

CHECKING BOLT TORQUE

The tables shown below give correct torque values for various bolts and capscrews. Tighten all bolts to thetorques specified in chart unless otherwise noted. Check tightness of bolts periodically, using bolt torquechart as a guide. Replace hardware with the same strength bolt.
