What is self leadership? Are you a self leader? Really? How do you know?What makes a self leader? Is self leadership possible or uthopian?

Nowadays it’s easy finding models of leadership. Business schools talk about leadership throughout courses and masteries. Internet is full of lapidaries quotes about leadership. So is the social media, (FB, twitter).

When we think about leaders, we think about the great people in the past. People that were considered leaders in their time and today in a certain way. In every area of life (Politics, Economics, Religion, etc): Mother Therese of Calicut, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jane of Arc, Marie Curie, Wiston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, William Wallace, Abraham Lincoln, Jesus Christ, etc.

They have some characteristics in common, very useful in their times. But the main one is that everyone was a self leader.

Self leadership: A developed sense of who you are, what you can do, where you are going, with the ability to influence your communication, emotions and behaviors on the way to getting there.

Self leaders take responsibility, do what is necessary to do and this need self discipline. Self leaders are responsible for their lives and show this autorresponsability in their actions. They are self conscious. A fundamental element is self control. Maintaining a discipline demands a controlled lifestyle.

BOSCO GUTIÉRREZ CORTINA

Mexican architect who was kidnapped for ninth months in a tiny cell. He developed a self discipline during his kidnapping and achieved escaping. He did what was under his control and he designed a regime of prayer and exercise.

Self leaders esteem themselves over all their defects and virtues; they have the ability to forgive their mistakes and rightly value their qualities. Self leaders possess an accurate sense of one’s abilities and achievements. Also they have a healthy sense of humour, and can laugh at themselves. Self leaders know themselves, their values, skills, strengths and weaknesses and they work to improve themselves. They use behavioral strategies: self-correction, self-observation, self-goal setting, self-reward, cues-management. They are lifelong learners, surrounded themselves with mentors and people that are smarter than them.

Spanish author, psycologist and journalist who lose both legs and several fingers in an ETA terrorist attack in Madrid at the age of 12 . She has since become a paralimpic skier.

Self leaders live their vision because of their values. And they are congruent, live their values with integrity. Having integrity: acting consistently with personal values, beliefs and attitudes. All this means to tell the truth, be ethical, do the right thing. They have consciousness of self and develope a continual self-reflection and an experiential learning. Self leaders have high moral character, they know what is right and wrong, and act accordingly.

Spanish journalist and public relations. He went on holidays to India for the first time in 2003 and he was shoked by the poverty there, particularly by the small children on the streets of Bombay, where kidnappings and child exploitation were frequent. He gave up his job and life in Barcelone, to help and create the Spanish non governmental organization "Bombay smiles".

Self leaders don’t stop in the risks and emprend ways to reach their goals, even dangerous ones. Self leaders adapt the changes, search for future solutions and see obstacles as opportunities. They wonder: “why?”, and “why not?”. They are insatiably curious, and question everything and possess energy, tenacity, and enthusiasm. Self leaders take initiative and are brave and fearless to fall down and get up.

Two of the sixteen Uruguayan survivors of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in the Andes mountains on October 13, 1972. After spending two months trapped in the mountains with the other crash survivors and where they had to eat fresh human meat, both of them climbed through the Andes mountains over a 10 day period to find help. Self leaders give a good example that gets people to follow them. An exemplary self leader doesn’t manage people, nor manipulate them, nor master them. People follow a good self leader because of his conduct. Self leaders know to communicate and transmit their passion for their vision, their mission and their strategy. They communicate their lifestyle without fear nor shame.

Spanish tennis coach. Nadal is the uncle and coach of tennis player Rafa Nadal. Toni trained Rafael on poor courts with bad tennis balls to teach him that triumph doesn’t depend on the quality of materials but that is a subject about attitude, discipline and perspective.
