Self Image and Performance 2007 Inside Results, LLC 1Our mind constantly filters the information that our senses perceive. This starting point allows us to illustrate a universal cognitive mechanism that constantly operates below the level of awareness and simultaneously blinds us to information that may be valuable or essential to our success. There is an inherent value proposition in learning about the RAS for anyone who wants to avail themselves of all the opportunities and resources in their environment.

Self Image and PerformanceThis multi-part series is intended to give you the tools and knowledge for designing a better future for yourselves, your families and your organizations

This information will help you leverage and develop the performance potential inherent in yourself and in the people around you by strengthening your own Causative Power, your Efficacy for change.

Other expectations

Exercise

By a show of hands, please indicate if you currently believe that everything in your personal life and in your professional life is going perfectly with no room for improvement.

Presumably everyone will keep their hands down in agreement that some things, at least, could stand improvement and- that is why were here, with an understanding that what starts internally and personally can grow outwardly to impact your family, your job and your community. The ADKAR Insight AWARENESS which means that not only leadership but everyone in the organization has an understanding of the underlying issues, problems and challenges which are the cause or the impetus for the proposed change.

DESIRE which means an identification with and a personal motivation to engage in the change i.e. WIIFM. KNOWLEDGE which means the training, the tools, the processes required to implement the change.ABILITY which means each persons ability to do the task, to operate the tool, to perform with the all of the components which were covered in the training or in the knowledge transfer phase of the organizational change.REINFORCEMENT which involves all of the follow up and sustainment activity required for persistence.

(Well draw on literally dozens of authors, video, resources. This is just 1 example.)

Were going to draw information from dozens of resources, books, videos, research, presentations.I like to refer to this summary of the ADKAR model as a quick checklist for probable success when thinking about any improvement or change Im planning to make. This is NOT an ADKAR workshop, were going to draw in truths and useful concepts from numerous sources.

Assuming everyone agrees that there is room for improvement or change in their personal/professional lives then weve got a start with AWARENESS.

Each of you will need to search inside for DESIRE, though I hope to fan sparks of desire into flames of aspirations through the course of this series.

A great deal of what we cover going forward is KNOWLEDGE as well as coaching on ABILITY which experience has shown is easily within the reach of everyone.

Our multi-part series as well as other structures you choose to put in place will serve as REINFORCEMENT3 Perception AwarenessLets do an exercise - Basketball Passing Video

This is a test

4We operate from an assumption that we are extremely aware of all the important things in the world around usWe generally have confidence that we see and know close to 100% of what is going onWe also form opinions and beliefs based on this high confidence we possess in our perception of objective reality. Consider this video Perception AwarenessIts important to realize that scientific research has demonstrated that we miss a great deal in our perceptions and this has profound implications for our awareness.

I have the Change Blindness video also on a flash drive.

We may be missing any number of clues to opportunity for resolution of an issue or for advancement of a goal.

Gosh look at that beautiful blue sky squash! Your RAS keeps you safe on Chicagos busy streets even when there are many marvelous things to look at on a beautiful spring day by the lake. Selective Attention can work both ways however.

The RAS is at work when you wake up at 3:00am with an answer to the question youve struggled with all day.

6 The RAS and Your Beliefs All of your past experiences and conditioning creates your world view including blind spotsWe selectively filter perceptions and information which support our beliefs Is man a rational animal or a rationalizing animal?Optimists and Pessimists both confidently cite evidence to substantiate their world viewDecisions, Risks and the RASThe New Car paradox Psychology of Decision MakingWhats the term they have for this in Real Estate?Worldview includes what you think/believe about everyone else and importantly what you think/believe about yourself.

7 The RAS and Goal SettingPut your RAS to work for you, it finds the How

When you focus your thinking on a goal in detail, your RAS starts scanning for solutions to get you there. It opens the filters to allow more options to be presented for your conscious consideration. We all agreed that our personal and professional lives could benefit from a variety of improvements.

So we are talking about changes, improvements, new future states to be imagined.

How can we leverage the RAS?

8 Putting it togetherDevelop our Causative Power to effect change and design an improved future, a New Normal

Understand the RAS in yourself Limitations inherent in the filtering functionCapacity for scanning the environmentRelationship with your beliefs, assumptions

Remember the RAS in others, too The promise of this study is to develop a New Normal for yourself and the world around you.

We know that our perceptions are subjective to some extent looking back at the 2 videos

Lets start by understanding our RAS.

Be aware that youve got a RAS fully operational in you and- so does everyone else you live, work and play with.Reflect on what interpersonal or professional problems/issues may have a basis in the blindspots all parties are carrying.

9 Clues AboundSo many time it happens That we live our lives in chains And we never even know we have the key

Our Journey together is to find our key, loose our chains and boldly live our aspirations Song lyrics from an old Eagles tune, out my youth. When my RAS is open I found so many confirming, validating clues to the Truth out there, everywhere.

Our series is going to take us to understand how we hold the key and how to use it.10 Resources Before Next TimeTED TalksAmy Cuddy: Your body language shapes who you areBody language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves.
