Our dynamic sta and partners throughout our

nine countries o operation in Arica are doing

antastic work supporting rural amilies and

communities work their way out o poverty.

We are seeing success in all our areas o opera-

tion and one o our major challenges or theyears ahead is to build on that success. We

have a proven track record o success over

nearly a quarter o a century but the challeng-

es still remain at every level o our operations.

As an organisation our shared vision is to see

an Arica ree rom poverty and hunger. We re-

main frmly committed to the philosophies and

ethos which were instrumental in the ounding

o both Harvest Help and Sel Help Develop-

    ment International.

Our ambition is to dramatically build upon this

proven success by scaling up our own work

and as importantly by sharing our knowledge

with other organisations. I we are to see real

and lasting development in Arica we need

to work in more eective collaboration with

like minded organisations and inuence policy

    change at all levels.

    Focu

The global spike in world ood prices during

2008 put into sharp ocus the critical impor-

tance o ood production or the worlds poor.

As a consequence o this crisis, and the ood ri-

ots that erupted in many parts o the develop-ing world, our major international institutions

were prompted to acknowledge the crucial

role that rural agriculture had to play in eorts

    An Historic Merger

    to reduce global poverty.

The Secretary General o the UN Ban Ki-Moon

singled out the role to be played by small-hold-

ing armers, when he addressed an emergency

summit that was convened by the United Na-

tions in Rome to address the crisis, last July.

The UKs Arica Progress Panel joined the

chorus, when it called or substantial new in-

vestment to raise agricultural productivity and

increase ood production in Arica and around

the world, while Irelands Hunger Task Force

    identifed improving smallholder productivity

in Arica as the number one priority, when it

published its report at the conclusion o more

than a year o deliberation, in September.

    Ou wok

The role o ood production at arm house-

hold, and at community levels, has been at the

heart o the work o Sel Help Arica since themid-1980s.

It will remain central to our mission, as we

work side by side with Arican communities,

    th Fuu

Sel Help Arica is now working directly, and with local partners, in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Zambia, Uganda, Malawi, Kenya, Ghana, Togo and

    Burkina Faso.

We are committed to delivering the very best practice to our development programmes, and to sharing the experiences and the learning

o the past into the uture.

We look orward also to establishing new alliances in our bid to tackle the enormous challenge o global poverty and hunger, and to

working to a common purpose with others engaged in development, to achieve this goal.Sel Help Arica is grateul to the committed supporters and donors who have been a key part o the organisation or the last quarter o

a century. Your support is essential to the ongoing growth o Sel Help Arica, and we look orward to being in touch with you again in

    2009.

From left : Steve Langdon, UK director, Ray Jordan, CEO, Nigel Clarke, UK chairman, and Tom Corcoran, Irish

chairman, at the launch of Self Help Africa, in London, last Summer.

to help them to achieve better incomes, better

living conditions, and better opportunities or

their amilies, in the years to come.

These opportunities are being created or

thousands o rural Arican amilies each day,

as a result o the ongoing work o Sel Help

Arica and its partners. Simple, but eective

measures are enabling households to double

and treble incomes, by ensuring better quality

seed stock is available, by promoting new

crop varieties, by supporting alternate income

generating activities, access to credit, and by

helping small-scale armers to organize into

local co-operatives, to market and sell their

    produce.

Improving access to health services, to clean

water, to better sanitation, and to education

is also making an important contribution -

strengthening local services so that uture gen-

erations in Arica can enjoy better standards ohealth, a reduction in lie threatening disease,

and the passport to a better uture that can be

    provided by education.

gramme o activities in Ethiopia, where there

are currently our area based rural develop-

ment projects, and two additional regional

projects being implemented which are de-

signed to strengthen and develop structures

    or agricultural co-operatives, and support

the creation o rural savings and credit co-

    operatives in the country.

    The integrated area based programmes

(ABPs), ocus primarily on developing sustain-

able agricultural systems at arm household

    level, strengthen social service provision,

and tackle the degradation o the countrysnatural resources. These fve year projects are

being implemented at Sodo, Bora and Huruta

in Oromia, and in the countrys Eastern High-

lands at Alemaya, outside Harar town.

    The agricultural co-operatives have supported

    armers organisations with the production,

    promotion and marketing o diversifed

    income generating crops including potatoes,

highland ruit and cereals, while measures to

    strengthen existing inrastructure, and add

value and quality to dairy production, and to

Sel Help Arica has two area

    based development pro-

grammes in Eritrea - at Gogne,

in the west, and at Emni Haili

in the south o the country.

    The Gogne programme began

in 2006, while the Emni Haili

    programme started in 2004.

Both programmes ocusprimarily on water develop-

    ment activities, with irrigation

    an essential component in

eorts to promote crop diversifcation, and

to strengthen ood productivity and income

generation in rural areas where drought is a

    constant threat. Agricultural extension has

    also been a central component.

Alongside measures to support and develop

arming systems in the country, Sel Help A-

rica is also engaged in supporting a national

    beekeeping development programme, which

seeks to promote and strengthen apiculture

    activities across the country.

Sel Help Arica has plans or a new develop-

ment programme at Elabared, and baseline

Children look forward to the opening of Legeba School,

that opened in Self Helps Huruta project, last year.

    livestock production, are also underway.

    Sel Help Aricas micro-fnance programme

has supported the establishment o more

than 110 primary savings and credit co-oper-

atives which have to date enabled more than

13,000 people to access loans to start income

    generating activities. Five regional co-opera-

tive unions, to oversee and administer these

primary SACCOs, have also been created.

studies or this have been undertaken.

The ocus o this work will again be on

    sustainable arming production, measures to

support the development o irrigated arm

and horticultural production and activities de-

signed to build local economic capacity andstrengthen existing social service provision.

Measures to raise awareness and combat

the spread o HIV/AIDS are also built into all

    project activities in the country.

    Kenya

    Sel Help Arica, which

    marked its 10th anniversary

in Kenya, ound many o its

    activities disrupted during the

    civil disturbances which ol-

    lowed the countrys conten-

    tious national elections, last

    year.

    Many activities planned or

    early 2008 could not take

place because o the widespread unrest,

and signifcant eorts had to be made to re-

engage with local communities, when peace

and stability returned.Sel Help Arica began its operations in Kenya

in partnership with Baraka Agricultural Col-

lege outside Molo in Rit Valley Province.

This successul partnership enabled the or-

ganisation to undertake a successul rural de-

    velopment programme in the Kamara/Tenges

area, and through outreach supported a

    beekeeping development programme which

has enabled thousands o arm households

and community groups to begin beekeeping

and associated activities in Nakuru, Bomet,

    Uganda

    Torrential rains which

    caused widespread and

    destructive ooding

    in the east o Uganda

    caused another major

    setback to Sel Help

    Aricas Amuria Project,

    last year.

One o three extensivearea based rural devel-

    opment programmes

    being implemented

    in the country, the

Amuria project saw many o its development

gains undone, ooding wiped away houses,

destroyed crops, and displaced thousands o

    amilies rom their homes.

It was the second major disruption or Sel

Help in Amuria, ollowing the incursion by

rebels which orced the suspension o the

    project in 2003-2004.

Elsewhere, 30,000 households in the Kamuli

project area were supported with the dis-

tribution o cassava, groundnut, maize and

upland rice seed, our depots were built or

    Kericho, Koibatek and Baringo districts.

Sel Help Arica also runs its own integratedrural programme at Gilgil, although this too

was adversely aected by the civil disturbanc-

es which ollowed the national elections.

A number o valuable new strategic partner-

ships were orged during the year including

with Australia Aid (AusAid) on a drip irriga-

tion scheme in Gilgil, and with Irish agency

Gorta on a ood and livelihood programme in

    the same region.

The organisation has plans or new area

    based projects in Kenya.

the collection and storage o grain, and 31

bore holes, providing clean water or nearly

    25,000 people, were dug.

In the Kayunga project area over 300 arms

started multiplication o cassava, more than

1200 households have been supported with

beans, rice and maize seed, hundreds started

poultry production, and over 630 pit latrines

were constructed at household level since the

    project started 18 months ago.

Passion fruit production in Kenya has enabled

hundreds of households to increase their income.

West AfricaSel Help Arica has been working in West

Arica since 2005, when the organisation

took charge o a number o local develop-

ment projects being undertaken in Northern

Ghana and Togo by the now deunct UK

    charity TRAX.

The organisation established a West Arica

ofce in 2007, and in mid-2008 extended its

    work to neighbouring Burkina Faso.

A region o extreme poverty, this part o

West Arica also had to contend with urther

adversity in 2007 when some areas endured

    extreme ooding during seasonal rains,

while other regions experienced no rainallat all - and the consequent drought led to

widespread crop ailure. Sel Help Aricas

programmes in West Arica are all imple-

mented by local partner organisations, whose

primary ocus is on improving ood and liveli-

hood security or poor rural amilies.

We are actively involved in orging links with

locally based NGOs and community based

organisations, and in measures to strengthen

the capacity and structures o local CBOs

so that they can more eectively meet the

challenges that their communities are acing.

Current activities include projects at Dapoang

in Northern Togo, unded by the UKs Big Lot-

tery, at Bolatanga, Ghana and in

    Burkina Faso.

    Sustainable arming technologies and ood

production are the primary ocus o work in

Sel Help Arica has two area

    based fve-year development

    projects in Southern Malawi,

and a urther series o rural

    livelihood projects in the north

o the country, as part o the

    FAIR alliance (in conjunction

with the UK charity Find Your

    Feet and the Development

    Fund o Norway).

SHA began 2007 with our area based

programmes in the south, but two o these

at Nsondole and Kaphuka were completed

during the year, while two new projects atMasumbankhunda and Kalembo were started

in the Lilongwe and Balaka districts respec-

    tively.

The primary ocus o these two area projects,

and o the work being undertaken as part

o the FAIR partnership in the north is on

sustainable agriculture, and on measures to

increase ood production and income levels.

Measures to build the capacity o local com-

    munities, and community based organisations

is incorporated into these programmes, along

    Zambia

    Area specifc development projects imple-

mented by local Zambian partners are at the

heart o programme activities that have been

undertaken by Sel Help Arica in Zambia

    since the mid-1980s.

    Sustainable agriculture and measures to

    support the development o micro-enterprise

are central to work that local partners are

undertaking in Mpika, Chibombo, Chipapa, and in the countrys Western, North-Western

    and Eastern Provinces.

In a country where approximately two thirds

o people survive on less than one US-dollar a

day, the ocus and emphasis o much o the

work being carried out by Sel Help Aricas

local partners has been on improving agricul-

tural production at arm household level.

The programme has extended its reach into

other areas, including providing support or

Mountains to climb among other thingsFriends o Sel Help Arica have taken part

in a host o events and activities to support

our work over the past year. Here are just

some o the activities to have taken place:

Dubliner Hugh Chaloner raised thousands o

euro in sponsorship when he climbed Mount

Kilimanjaro in support o Sel Help Arica in

September just over a year ater a group o

Irish aeronautical engineers had summited A-

ricas highest mountain, to support our work.

More than 15 teams rom across the country

took part in Sel Helps annual Carlow Gol

    Classic in May; close to a dozen runners tookpart in the Ladies Mini Marathon in June;

Miriam Enright and her husband Padraig

raised thousands when they both successully

completed the Dublin City Marathon in Oc-

tober; dozens o children rom Clonmel and

rom Dungarvan took to the stage or schools

music estivals in late Spring; and during the

Summer Mayo man Anthony Walshe raised

    thousands with a horse auction.

    The Skerries-Sodo community group contin-

ued their und-raising events to support Sel

Help Arica and Kilkenny man Hugh Bergin

fnally returned home ater more than a

year and a hal circumnavigating Arica on a

solo motorbike trip which took him throughmore than 20 countries and raised more than

    E20,000 or Sel Help Arica.

    Help plant the seedso change

Sel Help Aricas Help plant the seedso change campaign brought the organisa-

tion to the attention o hundreds o clubs,

    organisations, businesses, and schools across

the country in Autumn 2008, and succeeded

in raising public unding support or our

work. Co-ordinators across the 26 counties

liaised with local clubs and other bodies, and

staged a broad range o events and activities

including charity balls, gol classics, talent

contests, quizzes, sporting challenges and art

    competitions.

The centre-piece event was Irelands very frst

National Sandwich Day on Friday, November

    14. On that date, clubs and organisations

bought and sold sandwiches to their riends

and colleagues, and donated the proceeds

to Sel Help Arica. National Sandwich Day

was supported by Pat the Baker, who

contributed ree bread and promoted the

event on more than one million loaves that it

    produced.

    Barbara Gill

Memorial FundThe amily o the late Barbara Gillraised in excess o 100,000 or Sel Help

Arica in memory o the development

education teacher, ollowing her tragic and

    untimely death in 2007.

Friends and colleagues o Barbara donated

to the campaign which culminated in

    Barbaras parents Margaret and William

travelling to Eritrea in October 2008 and

ormally opening a new school which they

    unded in her memory.

Travelling out to Eritrea was an extremelyemotional journey or us. Although it was

tinged with sadness, we took great heart

and great encouragement rom the smiles

and expressions o the children and their

    teachers, said Margaret.

Valued supportersSel Help Arica continued to build valued

partnerships with a number o undingsupporters rom at home and abroad. The or-

ganisation is indebted to the Irish government

or its continued support, and to bodies such

as Family Foundation, One51 Charitable Trust,

    Bewleys Foundation, Gorta, The Alphabet

Ball, and many more or their backing.

We are also grateul or the support o the

Irish Farmers Association and its members,

who provide us with support across the coun-

try, and to the many other volunteers who

lend us their time and their eorts each year.

Field VisitMore than 60 Irish supporters have

traveled to Arica on und-raising trips to

support the work and see the develop-

ment programmes in action in the past

year. A group o around 30 travelled to

Kenya in the Autumn o 2007, while a

similar sized group went on a feld visit to

Ethiopia in October o this year. Partici-

pants und-raised to take part in these

trips, while the Kenya 07 visitors supple-

mented their eorts when they raised a

urther E25,000 in donations, to upgrade

a local school, ollowing their visit.

Donegal man Albert Doherty (below) said

that the trip to Kenya had opened my

eyes, and showed me the real challenges

that people in Arica ace on a day to day

basis. It was an incredible experience.

Two supporters got on their bikes and

cycled in South America to raise money or

Sel Help Arica. Sophie Corbett and HayleyRobinson rode or 11 days rom the Andes to

    Amazon, raising more than 2400.

Sophie recalls, We both wanted to support

the work o our avourite charity by doing

something totally dierent. In the months

beore the trip, I was inspired to get ft, and

we had a great time undraising or it by

organising a hog roast, car boot sales and col-

lecting sponsorship rom riends and amily.

We covered the cost o the trip ourselves, so

the money we raised rom riends and amily

went directly to Sel Help Arica.

On the plane to South America, the reality

o cycling or 11 days, and sometimes at an

altitude higher than 4,500 metres really hit

home. But once we set o, there was no

time or cold eet. We hopped on our bikes

and climbed out o Cusco, along the Sacred

Valley o the Incas, beore a fnal tough climb

to Tres Cruces, and into the rainorest o the

    Manu Biosphere Reserve.

Sophie and Hayley werent the only sup-

porters to get on their bikes to support Sel

Help Arica. Suolk man Charley Caiger

and a group o riends mounted up or aremarkable 2,000 mile cycle through Brittany,

France, last Summer and raised more than

    1000 in sponsorship.

Hands o Hope Harvest CampaignEvery year, we produce Harvest Festival resources and inormation specially designed or

    Harvest services.

Two long standing UK supporters traveled

to Zambia to experience at frst hand howSel Help Arica is changing lives. John and

Margaret Ward have since become members

o our Ambassadors scheme in the UK, and

are busy planning talks and events to raise

    awareness about our work.

Margaret and I have supported Sel Help

Arica since the late 1980s. We had initially

wanted to support the Gwembe Valley Project

on the shores o Lake Kariba because we

used to teach in a school near there, explains

    John Ward.

We continued our support or a growing

Sel Help Arica because o the impressive na-

ture and quality o the work. The principles o

    sel-help, sel-reliance and sel-determination

have been consistent hallmarks, he added.

Travelling to Zambia on a act fnding feld

visit with a group o nine other support-

ers, John Ward says we were enormously

impressed and encouraged by the commit-ment, skill and hard work o the project sta

and the people. Listening to them not only

confrmed in our own minds the eective

nature o Sel Help Aricas approach, but

encouraged us to try to do more to help.

We are currently thinking about how we

might achieve this as Sel Help Arica Ambas-

sadors, speaking to groups in and around

the Hampshire area to raise the profle o Sel

    Help Arica and its work.

an Ethiopian schools text book that was

developed in association with South Dublin

County Council, a new adult education text
