What is distinctive about your school?

Windsor Park is one of the higher performing Title I schools in the Northeast Learning Community (Kindergarten Reading Performance, 5th grade

Science EOG’s 2013-14).

How effective is your school?

Windsor Park is effective in meeting all of its AMAO categories, based on preliminary data. The school is also effective in meeting the diverse needs of

its students.

• How do you know?

Meeting target goals for Literacy in K and 1 and meeting AMAO targets. School data also shows a trend of improvement over the last two years.

• What are your school’s notable strengths?

Our strengths are Grade 3-5 math scores and 5th grade Science scores for 2012-13. We also have various forms of resources and support within the

building.

• What are your school’s main areas for improvement?

Reading 3-D data – working toward 90% on grade level; Improve reading EOG scores in grades 3-5 with a goal of 65% on grade level by 2016.

Incorporate more reading and technology across the curriculum at every grade level. The school also needs additional technological resources to

meet the needs of our students.

1. How effective is your school in ensuring high quality achievement for students in all grades, especially in the core

subjects?

The necessary structures are in place to ensure student success – master schedule, support personnel schedules, etc.

• How do you know?

Windsor Park consistently analyzes data using a variety of assessments. We set goals and meet with teachers to analyze their data. We plan

collaboratively, using the Common Core State Standards, and then differentiate lessons based on students’ abilities and needs.

• In which subjects and grades do students do best, and why?

Grades K and 1 reading, Grades 3-5 Math, Grade 5 Science – In grades K-2, teachers plan collaboratively then diagnose assessment data and

restructure their classroom instruction based on assessment results. Math is not language based; therefore all our students grasp the math concepts

and are able to demonstrate their understanding. Science was planned collaboratively last year, and the fifth grade team had a dedicated science

block daily. Instruction in this subject was more hands-on, which appealed to the majority of students. Science was also included in the Specials

rotation for all students.

• In which subjects and grades is improvement needed, and what action is currently being taken?

Improvement is needed in reading in grades 2-5. The plan is to focus on early literacy skills along with vocabulary. We also plan to look at reading

assessment data frequently and flexibly group students within a grade level based on their needs.

• Is there evidence of disparities in student achievement by subgroups? If so, what action is being taken?

Students with disabilities performed lower than other subgroups. We will be monitoring EC students’ assessment data as well as their progress

toward their IEP goals. We clustered EC students for this year and will be providing co-teaching and pull-out resource help based on the students’

IEP’s.

• How is your school addressing the specialized needs of EC and LEP students?

We created EC clusters in grades 1-5 and also clustered LEP students based upon their WIDA scores. This will narrow the learning levels within

classrooms and make differentiation easier for teachers.

• How does your school use student performance data to take and adjust actions to improve student achievement?

Our grade levels have weekly PLC meetings. During these meetings, assessment data is analyzed and student work is examined so that teachers have

a better understanding of what material needs to be retaught and what concepts need to be enriched for students who have already mastered skills

and concepts.

• How does your school allocate available resources to improve student learning and achievement?

Windsor Park has an ESL teacher assigned to each grade level. These teachers attend the PLC meetings to support teachers in meeting the needs of

ESL students on the grade level. We have 3 facilitators who are responsible to 2 grade levels each. This year, we added several Spanish-speaking

staff members to strengthen the home/school connection. We were also allotted an additional counselor this year.

2. How effective is your school in providing a relevant and appropriate curriculum for all students, grades and sub-groups?

This is an area in which we could improve. With respect to curriculum, the strict pacing guide does not allow teachers to meet individual student

needs. The staff believes that there are too many tests that don’t necessarily align with the curriculum.

• How do you know?

The assessment data that we gather does not always align with what is being taught in the classroom. Students learn content beyond what some

assessments measure.

• How is alignment with the Common Core and Essential Standards ensured?

Both these documents are used as the basis for grade level planning. Goals on students’ IEP’s and DEP’s are aligned with the Common Core and/or

Essential Standards.

• How does your school ensure a broad range of learning experiences?

A wide variety of “Specials” are offered – Technology, Media, Science, Art, Music, and PE. Students go on field trips during the school year as well.

There is a school garden that teaches the children hands on science concepts as well as responsibility.

3. How effective is the quality of teaching and instruction in ensuring high quality learning, progress and achievement?

The quality of our teaching and instruction is commensurate with the teachers’ experience levels. The majority of our staff is beginning teachers.

While they are highly qualified, many lack experience in meeting the needs of students in a Title I school.

• How do you know?

School personnel records reflect the teachers’ experience levels.

• Which are the strongest features of teaching and learning and why?

Consistent planning structures, data analysis, and classroom structures are the strongest features of Windsor Park’s learning environment.

• What aspects of teaching and learning most need improvement and what action is being taken?

Windsor Park needs a school-wide behavior plan that is consistent and concise. Teachers would like to see more effective instructional strategies

modeled for them. This will become one of our SIP plan’s focus.

• How do teachers assess students’ achievement of learning objectives and adjust instruction with assessment

information?

Teachers use daily formative as well as summative assessments. Teachers would like to have a data day on a quarterly basis so they could better plan

effective instructional strategies.

4. How effective is your school in ensuring high quality leadership and management?

We believe that more processes will be in place this year to improve school leadership and management.

• How do you know?

The principal has already put new structures and expectations into place. Clerical, financial and administrative roles have been clarified. The facilitator

team is very strong and is already working with staff members to ensure that high quality instruction is being planned.

• Which are the strongest aspects and why?

There are facilitators for all grade levels. They are knowledgeable about curriculum, and they communicate that knowledge to their teams.

• What most needs improvement and what action is being taken?

The staff would like to have more community leadership present in the school. They would like to see more diversity among the staff. Teachers would

like to feel more trusted as leaders in their classrooms. Three males were added to the staff over the summer. The school’s parent advocate is

planning a “walk your child” to school event to increase male parental involvement.

5. How effective is the school in creating a high quality learning environment?

We are in the process of creating a more effective learning environment, but realize that we have some work to do.

• How do you know?

Windsor Park’s test scores are comparable with other Title I schools. In 5th grade science and Kindergarten reading, our scores out-perform many

other Title I schools.

• Which are the strongest aspects and why?

PLC teams work well together because of teacher collaboration. Teachers set high expectations for students and then communicate the message to

students that they are capable of achievement.

• What most needs improvement and what action is being taken?

Reading scores need to improve. The master schedule has been modified to ensure that all classrooms have 90 minutes per day devoted to balanced

literacy instruction. Most teachers have attended PD devoted to literacy.

6. How effective is the school in establishing a high quality partnership with parents, other schools and the community?

Windsor Park’s strong connection with the community has improved. The school’s Family Advocate and School Counselor have worked to develop

community partnerships and make all students and parents feel welcome.

• How do you know?

Type response in this box.

• Which are the strongest features of communication between home/school about the school’s work and about each

student’s achievement? Why?

Parent and student surveys indicate strong satisfaction ratings for the school overall.

• What most needs improvement and what action is being taken?

Windsor Park needs to develop stronger relationships with other schools in CMS. Parent relationships and education should continue to be a focus.

We will continue sending all communications home in Spanish. We added a second parent conference date in February to keep parents more informed

of their children’s progress.

• What aspects of the school’s work to involve parents/guardians and the community in the life of the school work best?

Why?

• Bilingual communications

• The addition of more staff that is bilingual.

• Connect-Ed messages in two languages

• What needs improvement and what action is being taken?

Parents need to be better informed about the importance of sending their children to school each day for the full day. The staff is planning family

education nights during the school year to address these issues.

Guidance on completing the form:

• Please be evaluative, rather than descriptive, and make your focus outcomes for students.

• Include references to where the evidence of your self-evaluation can be found, e.g.,"excellent boys’ results in state math tests as shown in annual report to the state”, “parents’ questionnaires from 2010”.

• Be concise; (for example, use bullet points or note form).

• Aim to confine your response to no more than eight pages.

• Please place an X against the grade (1-4), which most accurately reflects your judgment of overall quality in response to the questions.

• You are advised to complete section B last, as this section is summative.

• Please omit sections where you feel that you are not in a position to respond.

What approach should we take?

Schools have adopted different approaches. In some schools the principal and the leadership team have completed the form as a part of one of their regular meetings. Other schools have devoted part of a faculty meeting as a way of involving all members of staff; this is highly recommended as a means of engaging the whole staff, helping them to prepare for the review and gathering evidence which reflects the work of the whole school.
