Basic Background Information

What is an earthquake? a series of vibrations induced in the earth's crust by the abrupt rupture and rebound of rocks in which elastic strain has been slowly accumulating.

How are earthquakes measured?Earthquakes are measured by seismographs. What does magnitude mean? The property of relative size or extent. How is magnitude measured?

The magnitude of most earthquakes is measured on the Richter scale.

Damage Caused by Earthquakes

• Landslides-Dramatic ground movement can cause the ground to rupture and bluffs to collapse.

• Building Collapse-The August 1999 earthquake in Turkey, 17,127 people dead and 43,953 injured.

• Tsunamis-The Sumatran earthquake of 2004,caused hundreds of thousands of deaths in a dozen countries when this undersea quake sent a huge tsunami crashing over shores around the Indian Ocean.

Waves

What are earthquake waves called?

Seismic Waves

What two types of seismic waves are there?

A P.Wave, and a S.Wave.

What two types of body waves are there?

A P.wave, and a S.Wave.

Body Waves

How do P waves travel?

They can travel through solid, liquid and gas,so it will pass completely through the body of the earth.

How do S waves travel? They only travel through solid material, and are stopped

at the liquid layer in the earths core.

Which move faster?Primary waves move faster.

Elastic Rebound

Replace these directions with your description of elastic rebound.

You may also insert images or an animation to help explain.

In what type of plate boundary does elastic rebound occur?

GPS Sensors

• One interesting fact about this earthquake is that it moved several GPS sensors. This will require …(Type answer here)

• How does elastic rebound explain this movement?

Tsunamis

• What is a tsunami?Tsunamis are giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic

eruptions under the sea.

• How do tsunami waves appear at sea?

• How high can tsunami waves be?

• How fast can tsunami waves move?
