Introduction

The idea of using cloud services isn’t a new one any more as nearly all, if not all, IT professionals are familiar with it, and many are already using cloud technology for costs savings, backup and convenience. There are a variety of ways to leverage this type of service such as on-premises or off-premises, in a private or public location or with a hybrid model of on-premises and off-premises services – to name a few.

TechTarget Research has collected data from nearly 4,000 IT managers on their usage of cloud services and this report drills into findings for an on-premises managed private cloud model. This report will help you:

• Understand how server workloads are currently being deployed and what plans look like for future deployment

• Uncover what functionality in cloud management tools is currently being utilized

• Identify a shortlist of vendors

• Find the features you should look for in an on-premises managed private cloud solution

• Review what it all means

TechTarget asked nearly 4,000 IT professionals for anonymous insights into how they’re deploying their server-based workloads. According to these participants, on-premises managed private cloud is the choice for 26% of IT professionals for their server-based workload deployments. Only 13% of companies with 1,000 or more employees and 18% of those with fewer employees indicated that they do not use any cloud solution and/or an on-premises traditional data center (without a private cloud).

Digging a bit deeper, we see that organizations with 1,000 or more employees are more likely (31%) than those at smaller companies (21%) to deploy server-based workloads using an on-premises managed private cloud. And thirty percent (30%) of those at companies with 1,000 or more employees expect to purchase more on-premises managed private cloud in the next 12 months compared to 21% of smaller firms (see chart on the following page).

According to respondents, five key management functions appear to be must-haves for those who currently utilize an on-premises managed private cloud model. At least half of IT managers indicate they use performance monitoring, provisioning, security, application monitoring and automation. Companies with 1,000 or more employees are more likely than smaller companies to use the management functions presented to them in this study. Clearly, a variety of private cloud management tools are being used by IT managers. Yet, and while the percentage is small relatively speaking, only 12% of companies with fewer than 1,000 employees have all the functionality mentioned compared to 7% of larger firms (see chart on the following page).

Whether it’s who they use now or who they plan to use in the future, IT managers appear to be pretty consistent when it comes to selecting the vendors they want to work with for an on-premises managed private cloud solution. IT managers looking to quickly create a shortlist of vendors to speak with should have these vendors on their consideration list.

According to 554 IT manages Microsoft, VMware, Citrix Online, and Dell/EMC are the top vendors when it comes to current installations. This doesn’t change when looking at future purchases of on-premises managed private cloud solutions. One-third of 617 IT managers who plan to implement a new solution are looking at Microsoft, with 20% considering VMware (specifically vCenter) and 10% considering Dell/EMC (see chart on the following page). Other vendors not mentioned in the chart – because they represent less than 5% of the respondents – include Turbonomic (formerly VMTurbo), Ipswitch, Embotics, and 5nine Software.

Without a doubt, availability is the most chosen top three feature according to about two-thirds of IT professionals. However, adequate performance is also considered important by about half of respondents and scalability is considered important by about one-third (see chart on the following page). While there are small differences between what companies with 1,000 or more employees are looking for compared to companies with fewer employees, one clear difference appears with smaller firms more likely to be concerned about being locked into one vendor (19%) versus larger organizations 7%.

The majority of IT professionals surveyed say they plan to deploy their server workloads on some version of the cloud in the next 12 months and while an on-premises managed private cloud model is not the top option it is nonetheless a popular solution for about one-quarter of companies. A lot of functionality is being used by current IT professionals, and while performance monitoring, provisioning, security, application monitoring and automation round out the top five to start an evaluation of functionality, IT managers should be prepared to add others as needed. In addition, only availability cracked the list of top features of upcoming purchases for on-premises managed private cloud solutions for the vast majority of IT managers. Exploring use case scenarios could help organizations make the right choices when it comes to functionality and features. Lastly, while vendor selection seems to be relatively clear with most IT managers choosing Microsoft, VMware, Dell/EMC, and Citrix Online – who all have suite-like tool sets that provide a lot of different functionality so an IT manager doesn’t need to go shopping for a laundry list of point products – there may be other vendors who also meet their needs.
