Lot: 121Paul Jacob Naftel R.W.S. (British, 1817-1891) The Fairies'Glen, St. Germain, Castel, Guernsey watercolour andbodycolour, heightened with white, signed with monogram anddated 1864 13½ x 9¾in (34½ x 25cm). * We would like to expressour sincere thanks to Gillian Lenfestey who discovered theexact location of where this watercolour was painted inGuernsey.* Paul Naftel held an annual preview in Guernsey ofthe watercolours he intended to submit for exhibition at The OldWatercolour Society in London, from the 1850s onwards. Bydoing so, he ensured that many were sold before they reachedLondon, where the watercolours would then hopefully createfurther interest and lead to possible commissions. The previewhe held during April 1865 was the first at his newly completedstudio which he had built alongside his villa, which still standstoday, 'Millmount' in Candie Road, St Peter Port, Guernsey, tothe designs of the famous London Architect John PollardSeddon (1827-1906). 'The Fairies Glen, Guernsey' was listedas No. 16 at Naftel's preview exhibition. . * The Victoria andAlbert Museum in London hold a very similar watercolour TheFairies Glen, again dated 1864, depicting the same locationpainted from a slightly different perspective, (Their reference 39-1992 Neg. 61161) indicating that perhaps this area was one ofthe artists more favoured views on the Island and one that hefound to be popular with his clients. Naftel had probably beenfamiliar with this location since the mid. 1840s when he wasknown to have taken parties of young ladies on sketching tripsto the nearby 'Woodlands', the former country Estate ofFrederick C. Carey. * The distant view of the spire of StMatthews Church, Cobo provided the first clue to the possiblelocation to the area where this watercolour was painted andthat it was likely to be close to the estate of St George,Castel. There was once an ancient chapel and well in thesurrounding area, and the standing water provided a furtherclue. St Germain chapel is mentioned in Guernsey Folk Lore bySir Edgar MacCuloch, published 1903, from which thisparagraph is extracted from page 187 - 'The Chapel of St.Germain was in the Castel parish, and its holy well, which wasregarded by locals as no less efficacious than the fountain ofSt. George, was situated to the northwards of that chapel. Alltraces of the building have long since disappeared and all weknow of it is that in the Extents of Queen Elizabeth and James Ia rent payable to the Crown is described as due on a piece ofground situated near the Chapel of St. Germain' The localfairies in Guernsey Folklore were known as 'Pouques' and La

Pouquelah is a nearby area in the Castel parish. Thesetraditions and beliefs were handed down from generation togeneration and fairies were often associated with water. DuringVictorian times there was a resurgence in the belief in fairies, due to many fictional books and magazine articles popularisingthis belief.Naftel used the title 'Fairies well' in several otherGuernsey watercolours he painted, as a belief in the existenceof fairies in Guernsey at that time was fairly common and wasprobably a commercial subject from an artist's point of view.Estimate: £2,500.00 - £3,000.00
