On the opening play from scrimmage of the Cincinnati Bengals’ 38-31 victory over the Washington Redskins in Week 3, Cincy quarterback Andy Dalton lined up wide right, and rookie wideout Mohamed Sanu took the shotgun snap, cranked up and heaved a pass downfield. At the other end of the rainbow was the Bengals’ A.J. Green, who pulled it down and sprinted for a 73-yard score.

That kind of wide-open play calling is a fair representation of the offensive creativity at work in the Queen City, a good portion of which is made possible by the playmaking abilities of the Bengals’ speedy second-year receiver.

Drafted out of Georgia in the first round (fourth overall) in 2011, Green came to the Bengals with a “can’t miss” label, a player whose size, speed, soft hands and other tools make him irresistible to scouts.

And that was borne out in ’11, when he led all rookies with 1,057 yards and seven touchdowns. He also became the first rookie receiver since 2003 to make the Pro Bowl.

His second-year stats are equally impressive. Through four games, Green was second in receiving yards with 428 and tied for fifth in receptions with 27. At this writing, the Bengals were tied for first in the AFC North.

But perhaps most importantly, he forms with Dalton a youthful quarterback-receiver combination that should provide fireworks in Cincy for years to come.

Green and the Bengals go up against a longtime division foe when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers in a prime-time tilt airing Sunday, Oct. 21, on NBC.

In the cottage industry that was “Law & Order,” one show remains: “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

And this alone proves procedural shows can shine. Stories make sense, writing is tight, and actors are sharp. The result is a gritty drama celebrating its 300th episode Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Though the show shoots all over New York, its home base is a cavernous studio on a Hudson River pier. Here, actors, directors and producers speak with Zap2it while shooting the milestone episode.

This plot, as expected, deals with an excruciating topic – kidnapping. As a dad bends down to retrieve a $20 bill on a subway platform, a stranger snatches his 7-year-old son and jumps onto a departing train.

The cops are off and running, stopping at nothing until they find the perps. Three actors have starred on the show since the 1999 premiere: Mariska Hargitay, Richard Belzer and Dann Florek as Detectives Olivia Benson and John Munch and Capt. Donald Cragen.

They have grown close over 14 years, but in between scenes, they retreat to their own dressing rooms. Dogs belonging to Ice-T, Kelli Giddish and Belzer roam these rooms, and the thwack of a speedball echoes. Belzer, who plays the conspiracy-minded Munch, shows off his boxing moves. It is a good thing his character is armed.

Belzer talks about how grateful he is for this role. “Everywhere in the world I go, I get recognized,” he says. He’s been stopped in Istanbul, Paris and Vienna.

This series continues to work, Belzer says, because “every script is new. Every story is a case. That’s the genius. Every week there is a formula, but the writing is so good it never gets boring”

That formula was used in the 1990 pilot for “Law & Order,” which Florek was in.

He recalls his first line from the first show: “Come on, fellows, I need something. I’m getting my butt barbecued.” He picked this over another role because “it was like nothing else.”

Florek infuses Cragen with a sense of decency. This season began as the cliffhanger ended, with Cragen implicated in a murder and cover-up involving city officials and prostitutes. During the course of the season, Cragen rebuilds his reputation.

“That’s what becomes the rest of my journey,” Florek says in his dressing room.

It’s been a very long day on the set, and Hargitay wants to return to her three young children. As the rest of the cast heads out, she settles into a couch to reflect on how her character, Olivia Benson, evolved.

An online review at Urbanspoon.com by diner Elizabeth Smith opens with, “Yes, Restaurant Impossible DID the makeover last week and they did great! My husband and I went on Saturday at around 2:30.“The first thing you notice is the improved decor – modern mixed with some rustic touches to match the Railroad Train Tracks outside and the name of the place. They moved things around so it is much more spacious. More lighting makes it brighter. Now the food – it is a lot better!”

In early July, chef Robert Irvine is in Arkansas with his Wednesday Food Network makeover show “Restaurant: Impossible,” and he’s not happy with what he sees.

“We’re at a restaurant called Whistle Stop Cafe,” he says. “We came in late last night, started this morning, and we’re just thinking out the restaurant. They’ve got a lot of problems – management, leadership, cleanliness, cooking, you name it. It’s all in there. It’s the perfect storm.”

One would think, with all sorts of state and local inspectors, it’d be tough to find a truly dirty kitchen in America.

But, says Irvine, not so much.“It’s scary,” he says. “But we find them,

and it’s not difficult to find them. That’s the worst part. There’s another one today.”

As for what’s on the menu, Irvine says, “It’s a big, buffet-style restaurant, more Southern-style food than anything else – catfish, collard greens, fried chicken. That seems to be the staple here. We’re taking it out and refining that into what I think should go here and can be put out fast, on a consistent basis, with fresh food. Right now, it’s all frozen and canned.”

Irvine has had to become a bit of a psychologist during the time he’s worked on “Restaurant: Impossible.”

“After the first eight hours, they’re doing great,” he says. “Nobody likes being told they’re messing up. We’re humans. We

don’t like to be told we’re failing. They’re very proud, as we are, and it takes eight hours for them to realize that I’m trying to help them, that I’m trying to fix it, with them, and give them a chance.

“At the end of the two days, I can tell you, these people have gone through a journey.”

Unlike some restaurant revamp shows that have a week or so to reinvent an eatery, Irvine works within strict limits.

“This is a unique show,” he says. “I look for things that can be easily cleaned, easily maintained and look beautiful with minimal work. Now if there’s a concrete floor, prime the floor, stain the floor and seal the floor. Why do you need to cover a floor that’s beautiful?

“So I take all of that into account, especially because (we) only have two days and $10,000. We utilize, remake existing products, what we have here, so I don’t spend past that budget. I always spend the $10,000, but I can’t go over, because they don’t give me any more money, and there’s no more time.”

Also on the menu is lots of elbow grease for Irvine and his team.

“We do the work,” he says. “We have volunteers, and there’s Tom (Bury, the show’s general contractor) and the designer, and we do the work. I’m here until it’s finished.”

Whether as a witch or an Army wife, Catherine Bell has been doing a lot of television business lately.

The “JAG” veteran essentially has been playing two series roles for several years, if one takes her recurring part as the seemingly magical Cassie in Hallmark Channel’s “Good Witch” TV movies into consideration along with Denise Sherwood, the sometimes brutally realistic character she plays weekly when the Lifetime drama “Army Wives” is in season.

“The Good Witch’s Charm” – the fifth entry in the franchise – makes its Hallmark debut Saturday, Oct. 27, immediately after a marathon of the four earlier films. Business owner, small-town mayor, stepmom and new biological mom Cassie

never has been proven to be an actual sorceress, but that confirmation might be closer as a reporter’s (Geordie Johnson) interview with her reveals a strange phenomenon and goes viral ... bringing an unwanted form of attention to Cassie and her locale.

“Sometimes, we accidentally refer to each of these movies as an ‘episode,’ ” the lively, friendly Bell says. “It feels like something you’ve been doing forever, and you know all the characters. It’s great to have all the original cast back, and we definitely all enjoy it.” Returning as well is director Craig Pryce, who has called the shots on all the preceding “Good Witch” stories, too.

Bell likes that “The Good Witch’s Charm” is also a tale of multigenerational

mothers and daughters. Not only does Cassie have a new baby and continue to be the stepmother to her police chief husband’s (Chris Potter) other offspring (Hannah Endicott-Douglas, Matthew Knight), but her own foster parent (Janet-Laine Green, “M.V.P.”) suddenly turns up after many years of estrangement.

“It’s nice being looked up to for advice while trying to juggle all the hats of mayor and store owner and mom and stepmom,” mother of two Bell says of Cassie. “It gets challenging sometimes, but of course, Cassie will pull through. Everybody seems to need her, and I certainly can relate to that. So can a lot of other moms who work and have kids and other life responsibilities. It can get crazy, but it definitely can be done.”

Q: Is this a role that requires special training?

A: There is training in everything. We got here in March, and for two weeks before we started shooting we had fittings and ride-alongs. I got to ride with different guys in different truck companies. If I spend a day at a firehouse, a shift is 24 hours. The nuances you pick up on, and the interactions between men and women serve you really well.

Q: What have you learned?

A: It’s a brotherhood, and they are really easygoing. And for the most part, I can’t categorize all of these people into one group, but the guys I have spent a lot of time with, they are all guys I could have a beer with, go to a baseball game with. They are guys’ guys, men’s men. They bring a lot of levity to heavy situations.

Q: You did another show, “Trauma,” with first responders. Did you do similar research, and does that help inform this role?

A: I did a lot of ride-alongs with paramedics for “Trauma.” I got along really well with one of the San Francisco ambulance guys. I still keep in touch with a couple of firefighters in San Francisco, and it just made it that much more exciting. I had an idea of what I was getting into and I really enjoyed.

Q: What do you want people to know about this show?

A: We have had a great response from the city, from the people of Chicago. It is beautiful this time of year, and the city itself is another character.
