General Description This document must be completed by the customer, signed and returned via email, post or fax prior to an installation of Select HR Products.

It details the hardware, software, configuration and miscellaneous IT requirements for this software.

Any issues or concerns relating to the IT requirements must be highlighted before sign off.Should you have any questions relating to this document then please contact your Account Manager.

Please note that the SQL, Web and Application server can be virtual and/or the same physical machine if resources permit.

This system requires the same set of servers as for your live installation and will be installed alongside.

Please confirm acceptance of a dual installation for test and live.

d) SQL Server SQL Server 2005 SP4 Workgroup Edition or above with latest service pack(s) installed. The collation of the SQL server must be Latin1_General_CI_AS, and installed with mixed security mode enabled.

Please confirm and specify version and service pack level in comments box.

e) Storage 2GB free disc space for database files plus sufficient disc space for database expansion. This will be primarily dependent on document storage requirements.

f) Backup Database backup and recovery strategy is the client’s responsibility. Appropriate measures for backup and disaster recovery should be in place.

2) Web Servers

(IIS Server hosting the Web Application)


a) Operating System Software

Windows 2008 Server or later (all non evaluation editions) with latest service pack(s) and IIS Version 7.0 or later installed.

IIS 7.0 or later will require IIS 6 Metabase roles to be installed. IIS 8.0 will require .NET 4.5 WCF Services HTTP-Activation enabled.


Minimum recommended specification: Dual Core CPU/2GB RAM

b) .NET During installation, Version 4.0 of the .NET framework will be installed if not already present. This may require a server reboot.

Please confirm this is OK.

c) ASP.NET During installation, the ASP.NET state service and .NET security accounts will be enabled. This may require a server reboot.

e) Configuration IIS will be configured for ASP.NET and Web Edition requires a separate Application Pool.


f) Security The web server must reside in the security domain of the database server.

Please confirm this is the case.

g) MDAC During installation, the latest version of the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) will be installed if not already present. This may require a server reboot.


h) Microsoft Office

Microsoft Word would need to be installed on the server in line with the highest version of Word that is installed on the HR user machine.

i) Hardware Specification to meet requirements for operating system version, IIS version and service pack(s) installed.


j) Storage 250MB free disc space for application files.

3) Application Server

(Windows Service for sending E-mail on behalf of the SelectHR System via SMTP and or OWA)

d) MS XML During installation, MS XML 4.0 will be installed if not already present. This may require a server reboot.

e) Miscellaneous If using mail server option 1 for Microsoft Exchange 2003 (see below) Microsoft Outlook 2003 or later must be installed prior to installation date.

4) Perimeter Network (DMZ) Web Server

IMPORTANT: This section is ONLY relevant if you have purchased rEcruit or intend to expose SelectHR to the internet


Windows 2008 Server or later (all non evaluation editions) with latest service pack(s) and IIS Version 7.0 or later installed.

IIS 7.0 or later will require IIS 6 Metabase roles to be installed. IIS 8.0 will require .NET 4.5 WCF Services HTTP-Activation enabled.




c) ASP.NET During installation, the ASP.NET state service and .NET security accounts will be enabled. This may require a server reboot.


d) Configuration rEcruit requires an ASP.NET configured installation of IIS.


e) Configuration rEcruit requires a separate Application Pool.


f) Security We recommend that you install a SSL certificate for use with this application.

g) Security The web server must reside in a Perimeter network. (DMZ)


h) Security Your external (internet facing) firewall must be configured to allow Port 443 traffic from the internet, using SSL and your own certificate.

Your internal firewall must be configured to allow Port 443 traffic from your external (internet facing) web server to the internal (web service hosting) web server.

Your database server must be configured to allow Port 1433 from your internal (web service hosting) web server.

Please confirm this is the case. Also please indicate if you operate different port numbers from those above.

i) MDAC During installation, the latest version of the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) will be installed if not already present. This may require a server reboot.


j) SQL Server Management Objects

If you are using SQL Server 2005 or 2012 the SQL Server 2008 Server Management Objects are required. These will be installed as part of the Web Edition or Server Service installation.

k) Hardware Specification to meet requirements for operating system version, IIS version and service pack(s) installed.


l) Storage 200MB free disc space for application files.

5) Mail Server

(Exchange / Lotus)

a) Mail Server Software Option 1

Microsoft Exchange 2003 or later with latest service pack(s) installed and Outlook Web Access (OWA) enabled.

N.B. An account which has write access to recipient mailboxes will need to be set up. This account will be used by the Select Server application to create and send the calendar/mail items.

b) Mail Server Software Option 2

Lotus Domino 6.0 or later with latest service pack(s) installed.

c) Mail Server Software Option 3

Alternative SMTP enabled mail server with machine specific internal SMTP relay turned on. This is a mail-only option.

6) Client Desktop

(Administrator Client)


Microsoft Windows XP or later with latest service pack(s) installed.


b) .NET During installation, Version 4 of the .NET framework will be installed if not already present. This may require a machine reboot.


c) Crystal Runtime

During installation, the Crystal Reports runtime will be installed. This may require a client reboot.


d) MDAC During installation, the latest version of the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) will be installed if not already present. This may require a client reboot.


e) SQL Server Management Objects

If you are using SQL 2005 the SQL 2008 Server Management Objects are required, or if SQL 2012 then the SQL 2012 Server Management Objects are required. These will be installed as part of the administrator application.

f) Microsoft Office For producing mail merges and exporting data for analysis, Microsoft Word 2003 and Excel 2003 or later with latest service pack(s) installed.

Please specify the version(s) of Office products installed.

NB: For users to create mail merge templates NOT requiring Word to be installed on the web server, Word 2007 is required (see WEB SERVERS section).

g) Browser Software

Web Edition Windows Client must also meet the requirements for the Web Edition Web Client (see next section).


h) Hardware Specification to meet requirements for operating system installed, browser software and service pack(s) installed. Minimum screen resolution of 1024x768 pixels.


i) Security The Web Edition Windows Client user will require full control permissions on the folder in which the software is installed.

First time install of the software will require administrator rights to the machine. Subsequent updates may or may not require administrator assistance.

Please confirm that these security rights can be obtained during installation.

i) Database Access

For users who are required to create database views (e.g. for system filters, reporting, mail merges, notifications etc) it is recommended that the user is authenticated with SQL Server via their Windows user name (i.e. integrated security).

If users do not log onto the network, or share network user names, they will be required to use SQL Server logins.

Please state the method of database access required and confirm that this is supported by your SQL Server configuration.

7) Client Desktop

(Web Client)

a) Browser Software

Recommended: Latest Version of Microsoft Internet Explorer with latest service pack(s) installed, compatibility mode disabled and cookies enabled.

NOTE: Only IE8 or above are supported.

Alternative: Latest version of Firefox, Chrome or Safari with latest service pack(s) installed and cookies enabled.

Please specify the product(s) and version(s) of web browser installed.

b) Hardware Specification to meet requirements for operating system installed, web browser version and service pack(s) installed. Minimum screen resolution of 1024x768 pixels.

8) MISC. a) Additional The client will provide the relevant security permissions to the Access UK Ltd Software consultant(s) to perform the installation by providing a member of IT staff to assist for the duration of the installation, or by providing network and local machine administrator passwords.


b) Options It is not necessary to have separate server machines for the server requirements. It is quite usual to install multiple aspects of your solution on a single box.

The hardware requirements may need to be higher to compensate for the increased load and application memory usage.

Please confirm you have or will be available to discuss these options prior to or during the installation.

Minimum recommended specification: 64BIT OS, >Dual Core CPU, >4GB RAM

c) Access On the day of install, server or client machine reboots will need to occur as and when, and therefore the client should chose an appropriate installation date and time.

d) General All machines with installed components of SelectHR software (i.e. not including browser clients) should be configured for English (UK) regional settings, and include no invalid characters in their machine or share names, and adhere to naming conventions and settings defined in Microsoft guidelines.

FQDN may need to be configured as trusted sites within the browser settings.


e) Network Please specify your network type (e.g. Windows NT, Novell).

f) Remote Access via TeamViewer or alternative

We require customers to provision some form of remote access for support purposes. TeamViewer is our preferred method.

NOTICE of withdrawal of support for SQL Server 2005 from 1st July 2014

In 2014, Microsoft will be releasing SQL 2014. From 1st July Access’ formal support will cease for SQL 2005. Access will continue to support our software running on SQL 2008, SQL 2008R2, SQL 2012, and the new SQL 2014 as our new software versions emerge later in 2014.

Any new release of Access software made after 1st July 2014 will not be tested upon and will not support SQL Server 2005.

Q: I have an older version of Access software and SQL 2005 – will I still get help ?

A: Yes - on a goodwill basis we will be able to continue to provide telephone and remote support. However, we will be limited in our ability to provide software maintenance and fixes, and compatibility cannot be guaranteed. The support that Access receives from Microsoft will also be severely limited. We would recommend planning a transition to a later version of SQL Server and a probable upgrade to your Access software at the same time. If you are planning to upgrade then please confer with your Access Account Manager who will be able to provide guidance on version compatibility of both your SQL Server system and your operating systems.

NOTICE of withdrawal of support for Microsoft XP operating system from 1st July 2014

Microsoft are terminating the extended support agreement for Windows XP. As such from 1st July 2014, we will not be developing or testing our new releases against Windows XP. The software currently installed will continue to work, and we will continue to support customers with XP ion a goodwill basis. Please take care that if you are planning upgrades to Access software on or after this date that you will need to upgrade your XP operating system at the same time. . If you are planning to upgrade then please confer with your Access Account Manager who will be able to provide guidance on version compatibility of both your SQL Server system and your operating systems.
