1. Sekaten or ceremony Sekaten (derived from the word Syahadatain) is a commemoration of Prophet Muhammad's birthday held on the 5th of each month Mulud Java (Rabiul early Hijra) in the plaza north of Yogyakarta (and also on the square in Surakarta simultaneously). The ceremony was formerly used by the Sultan Hamengkubuwana I, founder of the palace of Yogyakarta to invite the public to follow and embrace Islam.
