WAVES!
May 28:58 AM
whattheheck are waves anyway????
May 28:59 AM
the most interesting thing about waves is this:waves are the shape a material takes as ENERGY moves through it!

Waves in the ocean are a result of wind energy blowing in one direction for a long time. The stronger the wind (ENERGY) the bigger the wave
That's why waves are so much bigger during and after a hurricane :)

Heat travels in waves through the molecules of our atmosphere. You can see the heat waves if you look at the top of a barbecue grill while it's on. Or the road when it's really hot out

Sound travels in waves, too. You can see them by looking at the vibrations of a tuning fork once you strike it on something

Energy released from the earth (when the energy stored in the earth is finally released) travels through the earth in waves also! These waves are given their own
name, they are called
SEISMIC WAVES!
May 29:11 AM
Seismic waves, like all waves travel out from where the energy was released...
IN ALL DIRECTIONSlike throwing a rock in a pond and watching the ripples move out in bigger, and bigger circles

...but all waves are not the same. Definitely, all seismic waves are not the same. they all move the Earth differently. Today we are going to simulate how seismic waves move through the earth by putting energy into slinkeys!

RULES FOR THE SLINKEYS!!!1. Hold both ends with your fingers through
the middle, so it doesn't drop in the middle.
2. when using the slinkey for the demo, keep it on the floor! (Don't lift it for the simulation!)
3. When finished, both partners need to walk towards each other, do not release the slinkey, it will get tangled.
4. Students when break, tangle, or otherwise damage the slinkeys will be given an obligation for $10.00

Pwaves:1. Also known as Primary waves or
compression waves2. They travel through the ground by
pushing and pulling rock particles (or compressing and expanding rock particles)
3. They are the fastest of the seismic waves4. They are the least destructive to buildings
and structures on the surface5. They are the first wave to arrive at the
epicenter

SWaves:1. Also known as secondary waves or shear
waves2. They shake the ground side to side3. They are the second fastest wave, almost
half as fast as a primary wave.4. They are more destructive than a primary
wave but less destructive than a surface wave
5. They are the second wave to arrive at the epicenter

Surface Waves1. They are only known as surface waves!2. The roll the ground like waves in an ocean
(but only travel on the surface of the earth, they do NOT travel through the earth)
3. They are the slowest kind of seismic wave4. They are the most destructive
