Seismic Interpretation Workshop
INSTRUCTORS:Alan Cherryor Gary Chapmanor Joseph Brewtonor Sia Agah
Discipline: GeophysicsCourse Length (days): 3!
C"#s: $%
&u'lic n*house Both: Both
+ho Should Attend:
Geologists and geophysicists who ha,e a degree -rom a uni, ersity in geology. geophysics or
some other related science -ield. with a limited amount o- actual wor/ e0perience interpreting
seismic data (!*$ years)
Course Description:
1his is a 2#S1 course -or new interpreters o- $*D and 3*D seismic data ow do you
accurately interpret seismic data4 ow do you loop*tie seismic data to ,alidate yourinterpretation4 ow do you generate -ault and hori5on maps -rom seismic data4 1hese are 'ut
a -ew o- the techni6ues that each participant will learn in this intense wor/shop #nli/e a
lecture class. most o- this class is dedicated to hands*on interpretation o- seismic data and the
construction o- ,arious maps -rom the interpreted data
A-ter a 'rie- introduction to the pro7ect area and data. the participants will di,e into the
hands*on interpretation o- $*D seismic lines. and integrate well log -ault and -ormation tops
to the seismic interpretation 1he o'7ecti,e is to introduce the participants to the -undamentals
o- hands*on interpretation o- seismic data. the seismic tie to well log data. and the generation
o- ,arious maps 'ased on 'oth seismic and well data
1he pro7ect is conducted in a lease 'loc/ that e0ists in an e0tensional tectonic 'asin with an
a'undance o- normal growth -aults. non*growth -aults and hanging wall anticlines 1he
comple0 geology in the pro7ect area will challenge the participants in their interpretation o-
'oth the geological and geophysical data 1his type o- comple0 geology is encountered in
many areas around the world
1he participants will get an appreciation o- mapping 'y hand. using their interpretation s/ills
and /nowledge. rather than using a wor/station &articipants manually interpret $*D seismic
lines 1hey will generate and integrate -ault and hori5on maps 1hey will integrate hori5on(s)
with -aults 'y hand. position -ault polygons. understand and map -ault ,ertical separation. andgenerate structure maps in -aulted areas 1hese methods are ,itally important -or the location
o- e0ploration or de,elopment prospects and wells
Learning 8utcomes:
Gain /nowledge o- appropriate data -or hands*on interpretation
Learn the 'asics to tie well log data to seismic sections
#nderstand the correlation o- synthetics with seismic data to esta'lish geologic
hori5ons on seismic data

&ic/ a hori5on. starting with a line close to a well Continue to pic/ intersecting lines.
and tie pic/ed hori5ons
nterpret and correlate a speci-ic hori5on and 7ump correlate across the main -ault
where,er necessary
Generate a -ault sur-ace map in time
&ost the -ault cut data -rom the wells on a 'ase map
Con,ert the time -ault sur-ace map to depth using the time map as a guide. the well
