Different Types of Banks – spread your options

Page 25: SEF Careers Masterclass

School of English

Stay flexible… and be prepared to pivot

• The large banks are hiring less and less and people tend to move to more

specialised or smaller firms

• Lateral hiring into banks is far more common than hiring graduates

• Be prepared to apply for different firms and become a specialist in your field,

so you’ll be a real asset to the banks in a few years’ time (if you still want to

work there!)

• Useful sectors are: Healthcare, Fintech, Consultancy, Accountancy, Risk,

Regulations etc.

Page 32: SEF Careers Masterclass

32

• Most large organisations have Internships

• Usually over the summer

• Often just for penultimate year students, but some accept Master students (read carefully before applying)

• Employers also offer off-cycle Internships

• Smaller employers call any work experience internships, which is usually open to all applicants

Internships
