The SEER Team is a group of highly

trained and experienced professionals

who have worked together for many

years in a collaborative interdisciplinary

process dedicated to envisioning, creat-

ing, improving and operating successful

resorts and tourism destinations. Each

Principal and all Senior Associates have

extensive formal education from recog-

nized institutions in fields that are di-

rectly relevant to our clients needs in the

creation of resorts. Each Principal and all

Senior Associates have a broad range of

relevant resort experience prior to joining

SEER and have continued to advance

their education and experience with

SEER. Team members are chosen based

on education, experience and, most im-

portantly, their passion to work to a

worldwide standard creating leading

edge resorts.

People make the difference. People, who

devote themselves to understanding

their clients and believe deeply in always

improving their work on a global stan-

dard, constitute the SEER Team. It is this

team that will provide the best possible

result for your resort development objec-

tives.

Each project that SEER undertakes gets

the full attention of our Principals. We

believe that it is so critical to your success

that we limit our projects to only those in

which SEER Principals can be involved in

all aspects. This approach ensures each

client of SEER receives the benefits of the

extensive experience and training of the

people who lead the company. As a bou-

tique firm we are able to focus on quality

and not be consumed by quantity.

For it is the quality of the thinking, knowl-

edge of the world and its cultures, under-

standing of the land, the market and the

judgement that only comes with decades

of training and experience that is critical

to creating the most innovative and suc-

cessful resorts. This is what you receive

from SEER.

Why SEER?

and fieldwork led to the conservation of

the urban fabric of these communities

that are now popular tourist destinations.

He collaborated with Eldon Beck (the

designer of Whistler Village) in preparing

the first master plan for the Fernie Alpine

Resort which defined the roadmap that

the resort followed in moving from a

regional ski hill to a year round boutique

destination resort.

goal has been to obtain the education

and experience to effectively design

mountain resorts and communities. Harry

believes that resort and tourism destina-

tion design has to respond to the varying

needs of people and their cultures in

order to be successful. He studied art,

architecture and culture in Italy, and re-

ceived a graduate fellowship to conduct

research in the Himalaya Mountains of

India and Nepal while working on his

Master’s degree in cultural history. In

Canada Harry earned a Masters degree in

Architecture and Environmental Design at

the University of Calgary. Harry’s interdis-

ciplinary background in cultural history,

architecture, environmental planning and

landscape architecture creates a strong

foundation for his work.

Harry’s professional development in-

cludes both ‘hands on’ experience in the

construction of resorts and buildings, and

employment in several architecture and

planning offices. While retained by the

British Columbia Provincial Government’s

Heritage Conservation Branch in the late

1970’s, Harry inventoried the historic

architecture of the Kootenay District’s

Late Victorian mining towns. His research

Harry is the Great ‘Envisioner’. Harry is

the person who travels the world and

devotes his life to understanding the es-

sence of what makes resorts and tourism

destinations successful. He has partici-

pated in many United Nations panels and

conferences as a key resource on sustain-

able tourism and resort development.

Since beginning his professional career as

an architect and planner, Harry has

worked on over 120 resort and tourism

projects including planning and design in

locations around the world, and led the

revitalization of Whistler Resort in the

1990’s.

For over 20 years, Harry has resided in

Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, the

world’s ‘living laboratory’ of mountain

resort development and experiments in

tourism trends. Harry’s lifelong career

As the Development Planner for the Resort Municipality of Whis-

tler, Harry again collaborated with Eldon Beck on the detailed

planning and then managed the implementation of the master

plan that more than doubled the size of the resort. Whistler has

been recognized for decades as one of the leading resorts in the

world, and is a model for all season resort development.

Harry’s consulting activities over the past twenty five years have

involved the planning and design of numerous mountain, golf,

adventure, eco and wellness resorts in North America, South

America, Asia and Australasia. The scope of mountain resort

projects has included the master planning of large-scale destina-

tion resorts such as

Valle Las Lenas

Resort in Argen-

tina. The Las Lenas

base lands are 9

square kilometres

in area and in-

cludes planning for

over 11,000 rental

a cco mmo d a t ion

beds and a retail

village. The master

plan was done to

transform this resort into the Southern Hemisphere’s largest all

season mountain resort destination.

Harry has also planned several boutique mountain resorts such

as Mount Washington Resort and Hudson Bay Mountain Resort

in British Columbia, Canada, and has contributed to the design

of numerous resort hotels and hospitality service facilities such

the Snow Creek Lodge at Fernie Alpine Resort, the Raven’s

Lodge at Mount Washington Alpine Resort and The Kicking

Horse Resort General Store.

His activities in golf resort community planning and architecture

includes several projects in North America such as the master

plans for the Virgin Creek Country Club at Alyeska Resort in

Alaska, Redstone

Golf Resort in Brit-

ish Columbia, Can-

ada, and the de-

signs for multi-

family develop-

ments such as the

Deer Run town

home complex at

Morgan Creek

Country Club in

Vancouver, Can-

ada.

Recently Harry

completed the

master plan for Lotus Land Resort near Jinhu, China. This plan

creates a nature oriented wellness retreat with various nightly

rental accommodation types, recreation amenities, and a club-

house on 25 hectares of land set within an ecological reserve.

The master plan and architecture responds to the challenge of

merging traditional Chinese design with contemporary modern

design and creating a resort that appeals to both the Chinese

and international markets.

Harry currently is a technical advisor and member of the Board

of Directors of Aleevee8, a UK based foundation that was cre-

ated to empower social enterprises and reduce poverty in devel-

oping communities through sustainable tourism. Aleevee8 is

currently in the process of developing a vocational and social

education centre and a network of eco-lodges and campsites

along the trekking routes in the Gorkha region of Nepal.

Gary combines the experience of prac-

tical tourism destination and resort

planning and management, extensive

world travel , a trained educator and

advanced formal education as a PhD

candidate in Management at the Uni-

versity of Canberra where he also

teaches, to the challenges of resort

development.

He has first hand experience with what

is emerging as best practice and conversely with what is result-

ing in the decline of many destination, resort and tourism ven-

tures. Gary has a passion for research and for sharing his knowl-

edge with others in order to further successful tourism develop-

ment globally.

With over 30 years experience in the tourism, hospitality, educa-

tion and training industry and recognised in 2009 as an Austra-

lian Tourism Legend for his services to tourism development and

training he has participated in many aspects of tourism planning

and practice. Gary resides in the Australian Snowy Mountains for

half the year and in the Japanese Alps, in Hakuba for the remain-

der. He has travelled extensively throughout Europe, USA, Asia

and Canada.

Gary has consulted to numerous government and private tour-

ism organisations as well as teaching business, tourism and

event development. He has thoroughly reviewed the research

on tourism developments around the world and has completed

a major study into consumer destination satisfaction and re-

visitation strategies..

Previously Gary was a General Manager of the largest ski area in

the Southern Hemisphere, responsible for a wide range of busi-

ness units including marketing, event development and manage-

ment, PR and sales, 2000 hotel beds and numerous restaurants.

Gary developed a keen understanding of what is needed to en-

sure a viable and sustainable business.

During this tenure, Gary developed a range of marketing initia-

tives that were a first for Australia and assisted in the transfer-

ence of many of these to his overseas peers. He developed the

first multi cultural marketing programs and moved Australian

snow sports into the digital age with his strong IT background

and by developing a number of the first snowsports mobile ap-

plications and implementing a customer loyalty system that has

over 50,000 active members. This system has been extended to

many other tourism related businesses and organisations both in

Australia and internationally. Gary was also intimately involved

in the development of the Perisher Master Plan for the resorts

future redevelopment and was involved at a senior level in State

and National Tourism planning initiatives.

Gary served as a board member of the very successful Snowy

Mountains Tourism Organisation and helped transform the re-

mote region to a successful year round tourism destination. He

served both as Chairperson and General Manager prior to con-

sulting with Government Tourism Organizations. He was a board

member the government body, FORTO and also a member of

Tourism Australia's National Alpine Landscapes Committee. As

part of his work with the NSW Government, Gary was responsi-

ble for reviewing regional tourism management plans, tourism

master plans and tourism event plans. Gary was also responsible

for the development and implementation of numerous success-

ful tourism related management, marketing and event plans and

initiatives across a variety of landscapes within Australia. He has

worked with Tourism bodies in Japan and Canada in developing

growth strategies for both start-up and mature tourism destina-

tions. In Japan this also included post-disaster tourism recovery

workshops after the 2011 earthquake. As an advisor to the

Genting Secret Garden Project in China, one of a number of Chi-

nese tourism projects he has consulted on, Gary took on the role

of COO and Director of Marketing to ensure a firm foundation

for future development could be assured in the resorts first ma-

jor winter of operation through a strong ‘hands-on’ approach.

This role included training of staff across the whole range of

tourism and hospitality related tasks and management mentor-

ing.

Gary has a broad knowledge of the tourism industry, its various

threats and opportunities and has the ability to identify ways

around these; ability to articulate the big picture but still identify

the detail required to deliver on the vision; and an ability to en-

gage and most importantly unite different agendas into a com-

mon outcome. He has presented to government and organisa-

tions in Australia, Japan, Canada, Korea and China and is regu-

larly contacted by Tourism Organisations and Governments for

advice on planning, development and organisational issues.

As a small hotel co-owner

in Japan, Gary has main-

tained his practical ex-

perience developed many

years ago working in ho-

tels and restaurants and

utilises this opportunity

to gain a better under-

standing of the needs and

changing desires of guests. Maintaining the hands-on experience

helps to keep in touch and to re-confirm the desktop research

being undertaken on a regular basis, both as part of his Univer-

sity work and a necessity in today’s fast moving tourism environ-

ment.

Gary collaborated with Harry on different projects for many

years prior to his involvement in The SEER Resort Company .

Lorne has over 30 years of experience in

resort development and operations. After

earning his Masters of Business Admini-

stration from the Graduate School of

Business at Stanford University, Lorne

combined his experience in industry and

resorts with his education and led the

opening of the entire operating business

of Blackcomb Resort. From there he led

Whistler as President and Chief Executive

Officer of Whistler Mountain Ski Corpora-

tion, and as Chairman and Director of the

Whistler Resort Association during the

most exciting and formative years of the

resort.

Under his leadership at Whistler, Lorne

envisioned and created a service culture

for Whistler that has endured to this day.

He installed the first chair lift to the Peak

and opened up the largest single lift ser-

viced terrain expansion in the company’s

history, he planned and constructed a

major new restaurant in the high alpine,

renovated company restaurants, ac-

quired and expanded retail businesses

and constructed the gondola from the

valley to the mountain top which remains

the major lift on the mountain and the

only direct route from the village to the

high alpine in the resort.

From Whistler Lorne invested in and op-

erated Horseshoe Valley Resort in On-

tario. This year round resort business

included Four Diamond hotel, extensive

restaurant and bar operations, champi-

onship golf and timeshare. With direct

control and management of all business

in the resort, Lorne went on to add a new

golf course, service and sell real estate,

expand the winter business with a new

private club and multi-million dollar ex-

pansion and planned a the largest single

timeshare project in the province. After

Horseshoe, Lorne was asked to revitalize

the Calabogie Peaks resort in eastern

Ontario. This year round resort had just

completed an expansion and was operat-

ing below expectations. Lorne reposi-

tioned the entire business for success,

completed a master plan with Harry,

added new facilities and established the

resort on the path for success..

Lorne returned to British Columbia to

become a major shareholder and the

managing partner for Hudson Bay Moun-

tain Resort and President of a develop-

ment company. After completing the

master plan with Harry and taking the

resort through all approvals, Lorne is

course, service and sell real estate, ex-

pand the winter business with a new

private club and multi-million dollar ex-

pansion and planned a the largest single

timeshare project in the province.

After Horseshoe, Lorne was asked to revi-

talize the Calabogie Peaks resort in east-

ern Ontario. This year round resort had

just completed an expansion and was

operating below expectations. Lorne re-

positioned the entire business for suc-

cess, completed a master plan with

Harry, added new facilities and estab-

lished the resort on the path for success..

Lorne returned to British Columbia to

become a major shareholder and the

managing partner for Hudson Bay Moun-

tain Resort and President of a develop-

ment company. After completing the

master plan with Harry and taking the

resort through all approvals, Lorne is

presently servicing the first land develop-

ment on the mountain.

Design guidelines are in place to ensure

that everything that is constructed in the

development will support the long-term

value of the property.

Future phases will include a variety of

product types including additional single-

family homes, town homes, condomin-

ium homes and rental accommodation.

Lorne took on the leadership of the La

Casa Resort in British Columbia during a

troubled development. Finished the de-

velopment and created a successful four

season resort development on the shores

of Lake Okanogan featuring villa accom-

modation, amenities from boating, beach

and trails to tennis, aquatic and dining.

The SEER Team: Heinz Schletterer

The Schletterer International Group has its origin in the late 1980s, when Heinz Schletterer founded his first wellness & spa company, successfully develop-ing the first ever modern SPA and wellness facility in the ho-tel Alpenrose in the Austrian Tirol. This started a wellness and spa boom around the globe, as hotels all over the world became aware of the

attractiveness of spa and wellness areas to guests, and added these to their standard offering. The success story of the Schletterer International Group, and also the on-going success of the worldwide spa and wellness market grew from this fabulous pioneer project in Austria. Heinz Schletterer had previously established three hyper-markets with tile, bathroom, sanitary & wellness products in Vienna and Tirol which were the first hypermarkets of this type in Austria. His first entrepreneurial experience in the field of interior design and fit-out focused on the design and supply of innovative, healthy heating systems and exclusive bathrooms all over Austria Switzerland and Germany. To serve the growing wellness and spa boom, Heinz Schlet-terer developed and supplied exclusive spa equipment, but planning and design services were soon added to the com-pany’s portfolio, including later the overall planning of well-ness hotels and resorts, and medical wellness projects. Such was the success of the Schletterer story from the start – in planning, developing and constructing Wellness & Spa facilities – that subsequent strong demand for customized SPA equipment led to the establishment of their own manu-facturing arm. The Schletterer group now has state of the art facilities which allow them to deliver custom design and high quality. Strong market demand for support in SPA Manage-ment also led to the founding of the Nayara company and brand.

Schletterer as visionary and pioneer within the industry, and strategic advisor to investors, has realised that the future of the SPA market lies in a preventative approach to health and elimination of the root causes of disease. For this reason, Schletterer founded the IQCURE ® company for medical SPA and medical Hotel services (www.iqcure.com). The aim of this company is to take the leading role in com-bining this preventative approach with wellness and SPA offerings worldwide.

Page 23 The SEER Resort Company

With IQCURE ® medical day spas being offered in urban areas, and highly attractive destination concepts for fami-lies, Life Style and Luxury guests respectively, the ingenious range of IQCURE ® offers will raise the Medical Hospitality market to a new level. Leading professors and scientists worldwide, and doctors in the fields of traditional and natural medicine are at heart of this new IQCURE ® philosophy. The Schletterer International Group has over 120 employ-ees alone in SPA Architecture, Design & Engineering and Research & Development – in addition, many employees work directly with our clients in SPA Management. Hun-dreds of specialists work on construction projects which Schletterer often handles successfully as general contrac-tor. This means guaranteed costs for the client and delivery on time to the highest quality standards. In addition to the headquarters in Strass im Zillertal in Tirol, Austria, there are branch and consulting offices in Dubai, Egypt, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Russia, Spain, Croatia, UK and France. To date, the group has completed more than 2,000 projects worldwide and created more than 2.8 million square metres of SPA areas around the globe.

Located in the Los Andes mountains

of Argentina, Las Lenas Resort has

long been a global destination for

skiers. The SEER Resort Company

was retained to master plan a major

expansion of the resort’s mountain

recreation facilities and base lands.

Proposed mountain facilities include

overhead cable lifts to the summits

of Bora Bora, Paraiso, and Soldado

Peaks. The proposed lift systems will

expand the ski terrain by 400%, and

over 5000 vertical feet.

SEER also prepared a Land Program,

year round activities program, and a

development strategy as part of the

Base Lands Master Plan process.

These tasks involved retro-planning

of the existing Village, analysis of

future development sites, and iden-

tifying a market position that would

attract local and international tour-

ists. The base land’s expansion pro-

gram proposes a new mixed use

village and hillside residential

neighborhood totaling approxi-

mately 8,000 beds; a second village

of 1200 beds, and a golf and Nordic

skiing community.

Proposed amenities and activities

include an ice arena, golf course,

equestrian center, polo fields, desti-

nation spa, downhill mountain bike

parks, and multi-use trail system.

The architecture and landscape de-

sign theme for Valle de Las Lenas

Resort will express it’s high desert

mountain setting by using native

building materials and indigenous,

drought tolerant vegetation.

The SEER team was retained to prepare a master plan for Lotusland Resort adjacent a lotus ecological re-

serve in the Jinhu Lake agricultural district near Nanjing, China.

The intent of the master plan for this 25 acre site is to create a retreat from the congestion and pressures of

urban living. SEER prepared a land program that identified different building types for nightly rental accom-

modation, and a variety of amenities and activities to guide the master planning process.

The master plan features distinct neighbourhoods that are each anchored by amenities and activities such as

themed gardens, hot pools, and a children’s adventure park that respond to various market segments. A

central ‘Greenway’ with a water feature and multi-use walking trails will access all accommodations and

amenities within the resort, and will link to off-site attractions. A traditional Chinese village ‘Main Street’ is

also planned in the local historic architectural style to provide guests with retail and dining opportunities.

To minimize development impacts upon the environment, and to reduce ongoing operational costs, SEER

also prepared a ‘Sustainability Strategy’ that identifies landscape and architectural design guidelines and

sustainable tourism practices.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler has been the home of SEER per-

sonnel and serves as ‘our living laboratory’. We have had an in-depth

involvement in the planning and operations of this internationally re-

nowned mountain resort destination.

From the early 1980’s through late 1980’s, Lorne Borgal was the Chief

Executive Officer of Whistler Mountain. In this Executive position,

Lorne guided the transformation of Whistler Mountain from a regional

skiing facility to an international mountain resort destination. Lorne

was responsible for resort operations and expansion that included

infrastructure development such as the construction of the gondola

that provided access to Whistler Village, the addition of other ski lifts

and expansion of the existing day lodges and construction of new

lodges. Lorne successfully accessed new destination skier markets such

as Japan and served as the Chairman of the Whistler Chamber of Com-

merce.

As Senior Development Planner for local government during the early

1990’s, Harry Measure was responsible for very complex planning and

development tasks. During this time, Whistler Village more than dou-

bled in area to include Whistler Village North, Harry

coordinated the Resort Municipality of Whistler’s Advi-

sory Design Panel and the inter-departmental referral

process for project review and approval. He also facili-

tated master planning and detailed planning studies,

prepared design guidelines, and processed the permit-

ting of major buildings and urban design projects.

These tasks required frequent presentations to Municipal Govern-

ment Council, the Planning Commission, and interaction with private

sector groups to ensure proposed projects would be of the standards

that sustain Whistler’s success.

The SEER Resort Company has also completed several building and

urban design projects in Whistler including retail, residential, com-

mercial, and restaurant facilities.

The SEER Resort Company was retained to master plan the expansion of Hudson Bay Mountain Resort from a regional

ski hill to one of the largest mountain resort destinations in North America (based on ski terrain and vertical drop). SEER

prepared the mountain master plan that includes the addition of several lifts, substantial terrain, and features a gon-

dola from the Town of Smithers to the skier staging area in Mountain Village. SEER also master planned Mountain Vil-

lage that proposes a ski-in / ski-out mixed use village, adjacent residential neighborhoods, and year round amenities

that total 9,000 beds and 110,000 sq. ft. of Village Core retail.

Hudson Bay Mountain Estates is the first development phase of the Hudson Bay Mountain Resort base lands master

plan and consists of 186 single family residential lots ranging in area from 8500 sq. ft. to estate lots that exceed 20,000

square feet.

To achieve a ski-in / ski-out amenity between all lots and adjacent ski runs, challenging design determinants such as

hillside terrain, watercourses, sensitive soils and attaining acceptable road grades had to be resolved. A ski way system

planned through Hudson Bay Mountain Estates will also be part of a multi use resort-wide trail network that will link all

neighborhoods and amenities within the resort base lands. Tree preservation zones were established in the property

setbacks to ensure privacy and to maintain the forested setting.

The SEER Resort Company produced a comprehensive Development Code to establish an architecture and landscape

design theme, and to provide design information and construction materials and methods appropriate to the Hudson

Bay Mountain resort context. Best practices for construction and a construction monitoring program were also pre-

pared by SEER to ensure minimal impacts upon the natural environment during development of the resort. As the lots

are being developed, SEER will review all applications on behalf of Hudson Bay Mountain Resort for conformance to the

Development Code and construction practices.

Mt. Washington Alpine Resort is located near the Town of Courtenay on Vancouver Island. The SEER Resort Company is

playing a key role in transforming Mt. Washington from a winter only ski resort into an all season resort community desti-

nation. SEER represented Mt. Washington in the Regional District of Comox-Strathcona’s preparation of an Official Com-

munity Plan for the resort’s base lands. SEER also prepared a detailed Master Plan to chart resort expansion from 550

units, to a build-out of 2200 dwellings set by the Official Community Plan.

A mixed use, ski-in/ ski-out village was designed with 75,000 square feet allocated to at

grade retail, restaurants and recreation oriented activities. Eight hundred tourist dwelling

units in the form of hotel rooms, condominiums, and townhomes were also planned in the

Village.

The residential neighborhoods were designed to take advantage of ski-in/ ski-out opportu-

nities, views, and close proximity to lifts and other amenities such as recreation facilities. Most of the lands in the residen-

tial neighborhoods are on very steeply sloping terrain that required careful design of roads, paths and other services to

reduce construction costs and visual impact. Our office also prepared comprehensive design guidelines, development

regulations and zoning bylaws to ensure that all architecture, landscape design and improvements support the Resort’s

long-term sustainability. In 2002, Mt. Washington Resort won the ‘Starfish Award’ from British Columbia Tourism Associa-

tion as the most environmentally responsible resort in the province.

Located one hour west of Ottawa, Calabogie Peaks is a boutique all season, family oriented resort offering activities that in-

clude skiing, golf, river and lake watersports, mountain biking, cross country skiing, hiking and nature viewing.

The SEER Resort Company master planned a mixed-use village, and adjacent ski in/out and waterfront neighbourhoods to

transform Calabogie Peaks Resort into Ontario’s finest all season resort community. Calabogie Peaks will offer the highest ver-

tical drop of all public mountain resorts in Southern Ontario, and significantly expanded golf, mountain bike, water sports,

shopping, dining, children’s amenities and cultural activities. The landscaping and architecture will create an identity unique to

each neighborhood.

The pedestrian Village will serve as the heart of Calabogie Peaks Resort and the focus for year round activities. Village buildings

will incorporate ground level specialty retail with ‘warm bed’ accommodations above. Village architecture will celebrate the

historic buildings of the region and towns of New England. A pedestrian promenade meandering through the Village will fea-

ture outdoor dining terraces, plazas and public areas illuminated with festive lighting to create an animated setting for year

round activities. The promenade will be highlighted by a stream, ponds and other water features. Extensive landscaping will

incorporate indigenous and ornamental species that introduce variety and seasonal color.

Juniper Ridge is located adjacent the Village on a forested hillside overlooking the golf course and Calabogie Lake. This ski in/

out neighourhood will feature a chairlift, single family and duplex lots, townhomes and slopeside lodges. Buildings will express

natural materials and a ‘Craftsman’ style appropriate to the mountain setting.

Barrett Chute fronts both banks of the Madawaska River for 3.5 miles and is a pristine landscape similar to that of Algonquin

Park. The Barrett Chute neigborhood will consist of estate lots and a wilderness lodge / adventure center with out cabins. The

design theme will reflect the waterfront cottages of the Muskoka Region, and rustic Adirondack camps of upstate New York.

Desert Willow Golf Course is the feature amenity of this resort community in Palm Desert, California. The 18 hole course was purposely designed with more forgiving greens, target areas and hazards that make the course easier to play, without sacri-ficing the dramatic look of a tournament course.

Water, and vegetation density and patterns were used as de-sign features to create a naturally occurring desert oasis. Drought tolerant plant and grasses were selected to reduce the operational costs associated with irrigation. Most golf holes were fit into the valleys to protect golfers from the con-stant wind, to reduce evaporation of precious water from irri-gated areas and to provide containment to errant golf shots.

Golf turf grass was purposely limited to about 75 acres on each course, about half of that found on traditional golf courses. The remaining areas were covered in decomposed granite.

Unlike most golf courses that are developed to increase real estate value where residences are planned fronting the course, the design of Desert Willow placed the quality of the golf experience above the lot layout and optimum den-sity. The golf course routing plan established the framework to locate roadways, walking and cycling trails, utility infra-structure, drainage and real estate.

This collectively unique approach earned the Desert Willow Golf Resort the cover picture of the April 1997 issue of Smithsonian Magazine and recognition for its environmental sensitivity, as well as accolades in Natural Geographic Explorer Magazine, a half-hour feature on the Discovery Channel, and numerous other awards.

The Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks Resort near Silverthorne, Colorado, USA is an 18 hole 7413 yard resort style course located at an elevation of 9,000 feet (2750 meters). Course routing yields to the terrain following natural pla-teaus formed by ancient landslides and weathering. The high elevation and short growing season required that all 110 acres including greens were sodded.

The Raven Golf Course has been described as a world class golf experience largely due to the skillful course design that utilizes the varying change in elevation of 380 feet over the course length, and captures panoramic mountain views to the surrounding peaks of the Rocky Mountains.

Page 38: SEER Corporate Profile
Page 39: SEER Corporate Profile

The River Course at Keystone Resort was designed by The SEER Resort Company’s associates Fry Straka Environmental Golf Design to provide summer activities at one of Colorado’s most popular ski resorts.

The 18 hole, 3,000 meter course is located at an elevation of 2896 meters in mature stands of Douglas Fir and birch trees, and is surrounded by panoramic views to the Rocky Mountains. Course routing was challenged by a protected wa-tercourse, lands reserved for real estate development, steep terrain and elk habitat. Heavy snow accumulation and the high elevation challenged the course construction schedule.

Acknowledged as industry pioneers in establishing environmentally responsible golf course design, Fry Straka’s extensive knowledge of turf grass ecology is extremely beneficial in harsh climates such as the high mountains and deserts where winter kill and drought conditions are significant factors that can limit course playability and escalate operating costs.

SEER staff participated in the master planning of the Pinehurst Estates neighborhood at Morgan Creek Country

Club, a premier golf community located near Vancouver, British Columbia. SEER staff also participated in the de-

tailed site planning and architectural design of the Deer Run town home complex that was the first phase of the

Pinehurst Estates development.

Master planning emphasized the creation of open space, maximizing views to the golf course, and minimizing the

presence of the automobile upon the streetscape. Master planning also incorporated preservation of environ-

mentally sensitive lands within the site, and the creation of a walking trail system.

Duplexes, town homes and stacked town homes were designed to respond to an up-scale active retirement mar-

ket. The architecture and landscape architecture design expresses forms, materials and colors appropriate to

country club living in a western coastal environment.

Peter Hope Lake Resort in British Columbia, Canada is an historic wilderness resort on the Nicola Plateau in southwestern

British Columbia that is renowned for fly-fishing and bird watching. Master planning located a main lodge building, 26

rustic cabins and site amenities with careful consideration given to environmental concerns such as sensitive riparian

zones, nesting habitat, steep terrain and maintaining the existing ground and forest cover.

The main lodge was designed to accommodate group activities, food services, a retail shop, a spa and administrative

functions. Three guest cabin types were designed with waterfront lots maximized. Building construction integrates pre-

manufactured elements with on site fabrication to achieve cost efficiency and quality control. The architecture reflects

the rustic style of the high country ranch buildings of the region.

Raven’s Lodge at Mt. Washington Al-pine Resort borders the wilderness of Strathcona Provincial Park in British Columbia, Canada.

This 1020 square meter Nordic ski lodge also serves as an adventure cen-ter during the summer months. The lodge includes a restaurant, retail and rental shops, lockers and change rooms, administration offices, an envi-ronmental interpretive center and sup-port services.

The architecture reflects the historic rustic mountain lodges of the Pacific Northwest and responds to extremely heavy snow loads. Building economy was achieved by harvesting and milling timber on-site for use in the structural framing and exterior cladding. Raven’s Nordic Lodge received The ‘Starfish’ award from the British Columbia Tour-ism Association for environmentally responsible tourism.

Located at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort near Golden, British Columbia, the Kicking Horse

General Store fronts the main Gondola skier staging area in the village core. The store provides

the sales of convenience items such as groceries, beer and wine, and specialty items such as

native artwork and jewelry to resort residents and visitors.

The store’s thematic design is based on a late 19th Century Victorian era general store common

to British Columbia frontier settlements of the day. The design expresses ‘Experiential Retail’

through authentic period lighting, display design, and materials. The flooring is fabricated from

reclaimed barn wood salvaged in the region, while the millwork was meticulously detailed to

suit specific merchandising requirements.

Snow Creek Lodge at Fernie Mountain Resort was designed for the 1992 Olympic downhill gold medalist Kerrin

Lee-Gartner.

This complex features a 65 unit condominium hotel (with studios, 1 + 2 bedroom units), 8 luxury chalets (with

lofts and detached garages) adjacent the ski runs, a restaurant, health club, secure underground parking and

conference facilities. A pool, hot tubs and activities terraces were located in the sun fronting the main ski run

and staging lift for après ski activities.

Site and building design responds to sloping terrain, heavy snowfall, maximizing solar exposure, and capturing

short distance views to the ski runs and long distance views to the surrounding mountain peaks. During con-

struction the forest cover was retained and a stream running through the site was enhanced as a key landscape

feature with waterfalls and pools. The architecture of Snow Creek Lodge is based upon the historic rustic hotels

and lodges built in the National Parks of the North American inter-mountain west.

A ‘resort within a resort’ Snow Creek Lodge provides an intimate private club atmosphere and is a popular year round retreat among international visitors.

As stated by the Urban Land Institute in the 2007 edition of the Resort Development Handbook, ‘Shopping is the most popular year-round activity in mountain resorts’. A properly delivered retail program creates a positive memo-rable experience among guests and can be a major factor in differentiating each resort, contributing to its overall success.

The SEER Resort Company has been involved in all aspects of retail planning and design in resort and tourism set-tings. Projects have included the preparation of retail strategies, architecture and urban design guidelines, and ten-ant mixes for resort towns, pre-planned commercial villages such as Whistler Village and the Town of Revelstoke in Canada.

The SEER Resort Company has also prepared the retail strategy and tenant mixes for shopping centers and hotels such as the Genting Grand Resort Hotel at Secret Garden Resort in China, and the detailed architecture and interior design of resort buildings and tenant spaces such as the Fernie General Store and the Kicking Horse Resort General Store in British Columbia, Canada.

With Mt. McKenzie Resort destined to be one of the largest ski resorts in North America, Revelstoke is trans-

forming from a resource based economy to an all season resort community. Increasing development pres-

sures from a rapidly growing speculative market caused the Town of Revelstoke Municipal Council concern

about the emergence of inappropriate retail types, scale, and uncontrolled sprawl eroding the health of the

downtown commercial core and community’s unique sense of place.

The SEER Resort Company and Trec International of Vancouver, BC, were retained to prepare a retail strat-

egy for the downtown core and other commercial precincts within the community. Trec International has

the extensive experience in market analysis, programming, and tenant mix strategies required to achieve

optimum retail environments in resort and tourism settings. SEER has

associated with Trec International on many projects contributing exper-

tise in resort planning, urban design and architecture. Throughout the

planning process, Trec and SEER drew upon their extensive research

base and experiences related to retail planning in other all season re-

sorts where shopping is recognized as the most popular year round ac-

tivity.

The Town of Revelstoke Retail Strategy projected demographic and

market trends, quantified existing retail types and future needs, and

identified specialty retail appropriate to an all season resort commu-

nity. The Retail Strategy also defined retail precincts within the town

boundaries where specific retail types and appropriate scale would best

be suited. The SEER Resort Company prepared zoning, architecture,

urban design, and signage and lighting recommendations for each retail

zone to establish individual identities.

SEER Projects: Town of Revelstoke Retail Strategy, British Columbia

Page 57: SEER Corporate Profile

As part of the provision of comprehensive planning, design, and start-up operations consulting services to Secret Gar-

den Resort, The SEER Resort Company also prepared a retail strategy. The Secret Garden Resort Retail Strategy focused

upon the retail spaces within the Genting Grand Hotel that is the first phase of this 99 square kilometer all season re-

sort that will feature a commercial retail village at build-out.

Based upon examples of successful retail precedents from all season resorts around the world, the retail strategy out-

lined the principles to guide a successful retail program specific to all season mountain resorts, and recommended an

appropriate tenant mix and their locations, design guidelines for common space in the retail precincts, activities such as

types of food and beverage and special events that enhance the retail program. As Secret Garden Resort implements

it’s expansion program, this document will serve as the foundation for a resort wide retail strategy.

This is the largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere spread over 1245 hectares and having 47 ski lifts. With an

annual skier visit of over 500,000 guests and a staff of over 1500 during peak season this resort provided a great

opportunity to enhance and develop all aspects of resort and hospitality management. SEER principal Gary Grant’s

responsibilities included the management and development of whole of resort marketing including ancillary proper-

ties, Sales, Public Relations, Sponsorship, Guest Services, Major Events, Snowsports School and Media Departments

and OHS, as well as being the General Manager responsible for the Perisher Valley Hotel and The Station Resort and

all resort food and beverage outlets and restaurants.

strategy associated with this; development and management of Perisher's web site, its growth and analysis; web

site and online media advertising and development of social media (including Facebook, Twitter etc) and develop-

ment of mobile apps including the iphone app launched in 2010. In addition SEER contributed to the snow and wind

management guidelines for the master plan for the new Perisher Village development, recognised by the NSW Divi-

sion of the Planning Institute of Australia with an Award for Excellence in Planning in the category of 'Urban Design -

Plans and Ideas'. This, was on top of the 2001 Royal Australian Planning Institutes National Award for Planning Excel-

lence 'Environmental Planning and Conservation' for the Perisher Ski Slope Master Plan.

Ongoing strategic development, adjustment and management of associated change in a seasonal business that was

in a constant state of flux. In addition staff training and mentoring on a regular basis was constantly required.
