Happy New Year! For me, communing with nature is a constant. Nature always amazes me. I marvel at the “palm pup” that my husband dug up from the local railroad bed and transplanted into our condo yard and then transplanted into our San Clemente yard. We watched it grow to 40 feet without any attention from me. I have holly ferns growing out of the cracks in the fake rock around our koi pond. I could have never planted it there on purpose! I’ve learned to let nature thrive where it wants to thrive. Today, my garden boosts my mental state, while I appreciate the oasis we’ve created over 26 years, listening to our koi pond stream, waterfall and all our visiting birds. I enjoy every color, texture and fragrance. I look forward to all of the 2020 field trips, member and public garden tours and general meetings that, no doubt, will continue to inspire me. and Sherry Christensen We have been busy On Tuesday December 10 a group of us went to Concordiarsquos monthly garden club They had a lesson on mistletoe and then made their own mistletoe ornaments I think the fun fact that most of the kids (and volunteers) will remember is that the word ldquomistletoerdquo comes from the Anglo-Saxon words ldquomistlerdquo and ldquotanrdquo which means ldquodung twigrdquo (translation poop branch) which refers to the seeds being distributed through bird poop and the mistletoe growing on the branches of trees Did you know that mistletoe is semi-parasitic and gets its nutrients from the trees on which it grows Many thanks to Kieu Rosa and Mike for helping out at Concordia On Friday December 13 a group of us went to Las Palmas for their monthly Fun Friday We helped the kids make ornaments from pine cones - we glued on a string and a bow and then the kids decorated with glue glitter and paint Based on the number of brown paper bags we used we had around 200 students who came into the garden and completed this activity Many thanks to Terry Rosa Mary Kieu and Mike - all hands were needed We now have a team working with the Principal at Palisades to help get their school garden going They have district approval to remove turf and start a garden and Kris Marilyn and Diane are currently helping with the garden design It is so fun to see the enthusiasm of kids in the garden Volunteers are always welcome to join us - just send an email to Doris and you will be kept informed of our activities

and Sherry Christensen We have been busy On Tuesday December 10 a group of us went to Concordiarsquos monthly garden club They had a lesson on mistletoe and then made their own mistletoe ornaments I think the fun fact that most of the kids (and volunteers) will remember is that the word ldquomistletoerdquo comes from the Anglo-Saxon words ldquomistlerdquo and ldquotanrdquo which means ldquodung twigrdquo (translation poop branch) which refers to the seeds being distributed through bird poop and the mistletoe growing on the branches of trees Did you know that mistletoe is semi-parasitic and gets its nutrients from the trees on which it grows Many thanks to Kieu Rosa and Mike for helping out at Concordia On Friday December 13 a group of us went to Las Palmas for their monthly Fun Friday We helped the kids make ornaments from pine cones - we glued on a string and a bow and then the kids decorated with glue glitter and paint Based on the number of brown paper bags we used we had around 200 students who came into the garden and completed this activity Many thanks to Terry Rosa Mary Kieu and Mike - all hands were needed We now have a team working with the Principal at Palisades to help get their school garden going They have district approval to remove turf and start a garden and Kris Marilyn and Diane are currently helping with the garden design It is so fun to see the enthusiasm of kids in the garden Volunteers are always welcome to join us - just send an email to Doris and you will be kept informed of our activities
