Teach%the%Teacher"9"develops"professional"knowledge"and"teaching"practice"for"Cambodian"teachers"through"workshops"facilitated"with"volunteer"Australian"teachers;"mentoring"programs"that"provide"continuing"in9class"support"from"Cambodian"teacher"peer"leaders;"continuing"professional"training"from"our"local"staff;"and"relevant"and"practical"teaching"resources."

2.#A#YEAR#IN#REVIEW##It"has"been"another"year"of"growth"and"development"for"SeeBeyondBorders"with"progress"achieved"in"both"Australia"and"Cambodia"across"all"SeeBeyondBorders’"programs"and"activities.""This"year"has"seen"us"develop"and"broaden"our"approach"to"running"our"own"programs"in"Cambodia,"taking"on"the"learnings"from"working"with"our"partners.""Moving"forward"we"will"be"more"independent"in"what"we"do,"restricting"our"focus"to"locations"where"we"can"best"concentrate"our"efforts"to"bring"about"lasting"change"for"the"communities"we"work"with.""We"have"learned"a"great"deal"about"the"need"to"balance"intensity"of"activity"with"an"appropriate"spread"of"initiatives"and"participants,"to"build"momentum"that"goes"beyond"simply"our"own"efforts.""In"the"medium"term"we"will"focus"our"work"in"the"north"western"provinces"of"Cambodia,"complementing"the"initiatives"of"our"partners.""EDUCATION#PROGRAM#ACTIVITIES#This"year"was"the"second"full"year"in"the"formal"training"workshop"program"for"the"teachers"in"Ek"Phnom"district,"Battambang.""We"have"seen"a"steady"development"in"the"teachers’"and"mentors’"skills"and"confidence"over"this"time.""Based"on"the"evaluations"and"feedback"received"from"stakeholders,"we"have"developed"our"workshops"further.""These"begin"with"an"initial"focus"on"the"teachers’"own"understanding"of"basic"mathematical"operations,"breaking"down"the"associated"concepts"so"they"can"be"taught"effectively.""They"then"go"on"to"explore"how"to"use"the"SeeBeyondBorders’"resource"packs"in"a"variety"of"practical"ways"according"to"the"needs"of"a"class"and"the"demands"of"the"textbooks."

The"highlight"of"the"Teach&the&Teacher"program"over"the"year"has"been"having"the"Australian"teachers"and"our"Cambodian"staff"in"the"final"session"of"one"of"our"workshop"series."This"involved"observing"and"coaching"teachers"and"their"mentors"through"first"planning"and"then"delivering"lessons"in"a"live"classroom"environment.""These"sessions"concluded"our"program"in"Kampong"Cham"and"provided"a"wonderful"opportunity"for"the"Australian"teachers"to"witness"the"progress"achieved"by"firstly"the"mentor"teachers"who,"taking"the"lead"role,"demonstrated"their"in9class"observation"and"feedback"skills.""Then"secondly"they"witnessed"the"Cambodian"teachers"themselves"demonstrating"the"range"of"strategies"they"had"refined"through"the"program.""This"week"was"a"clear"affirmation"that"the"mentor"/"mentee"partnerships"have"been"instrumental"in"ensuring"that"the"skills"learnt"in"the"workshops"are"translated"into"everyday"practice"in"the"classrooms."""OTHER#ACTIVITIES#IN#CAMBODIA#

"In"February,"the"CEO"of"a"large"international"organisation"visited"us"in"Battambang"to"investigate"a"potential"program"for"staff"in"their"Asian"offices."This"enabled"SeeBeyondBorders"to"develop"a"product"for"corporate"organisations"and"businesses"to"engage"their"staff"and"provide"opportunities"for"personal"development"and"team"building."We"have"our"first"corporate"group"confirmed"for"early"2014"from"ISIS,"who"have"been"a"key"supporter"of"SeeBeyondBorders"since"November"2012."""Our"numbers"in"Cambodia"grew"from"5"to"8"staff"during"the"year"and"we"moved"offices"in"February"to"bigger"premises"in"Battambang."We"also"opened"an"office"in"Siem"Reap"with"its"first"full"time"employee"based"there"to"run"the"program"in"Puok"district."""

A"new"workshop"‘Building"Concepts’"was"developed"in"response"to"the"Program"Review"Group’s"recommendations"in"June"2012"and"focussed"on"building"teachers’"conceptual"understanding"of"the"four"operations"of"addition,"subtraction,"multiplication"and"division."The"workshops"worked"from"a"basic"understanding"using"teaching"resource"materials,"to"a"more"complex"understanding,"using"place"value"charts"and"materials"and"finally"transferring"this"concrete"knowledge"to"an"abstract"understanding."Every"teacher"in"the"program,"including"mentors,"took"part"in"this"program"which"not"only"helped"teachers"to"plan"conceptually,"but"also"greatly"enhanced"their"own"personal"mathematical"understanding."#January#2013#Battambang#and#Siem#Reap#

The"program"in"Kampong"Cham"comprised"three"small"workshop"groups"with"19"teachers"and"6"mentor"teachers."Facilitated"by"Australian"volunteer"teachers,"Khmer"mentor"teachers"led"small"groups"through"the"process"of"planning"lessons"which"had"previously"been"modelled"and"unpacked"by"their"Australian"colleagues."These"lessons"focussed"on"teaching"place"value"using"concrete"materials,"and"teaching"of"fractions."Both"of"these"concepts"present"a"huge"challenge"for"the"Khmer"teachers."Each"day"these"planned"lessons"were"then"taught"in"classes"in"the"Demonstration"School,"located"at"the"Provincial"Teacher"Training"College."Pairs"of"teachers"delivered"the"lessons"and"their"mentors"practised"in9class"observation."Following"each"lesson,"the"mentors"facilitated"small"group"evaluation"of"the"lesson"and"gave"constructive"and"practical"feedback"to"each"teacher"in"line"with"their"mentor"training."This"was"an"excellent"forum"for"both"mentors"and"teachers"to"consolidate"the"skills"and"strategies"they"had"learnt"through"the"workshop"cycle,"in"an"authentic"setting"with"support"from"both"the"Australian"and"Cambodian"educational"staff"of"SeeBeyondBorders."#June#/#July#2013#Siem#Reap#

In"Siem"Reap"a"‘Building"Concepts’"workshop"was"delivered"for"all"teachers"in"the"program"to"strengthen"their"conceptual"understanding"of"the"four"calculation"operations."There"was"a"marked"improvement"in"the"confidence"and"competence"of"the"teachers"and"they"were"very"proactive"in"building"their"conceptual"understanding"throughout"the"workshops."#"

The"first"location"selected"by"this"construction"partner"has"been"the"Primary"school"at"Bak"Rotes,"the"final"school"on"the"land"before"the"district"extends"into"the"Tonle"Sap"Lake.""There"are"four"teachers"in"this"school"who"are"part"of"the"local"Teach&the&Teacher"program.""This"area"was"extensively"flooded"in"2011"leaving"the"school"under"water"for"a"number"of"weeks"and"severely"damaged"as"the"water"receded.""""The"community"was"delighted"with"the"proposal"for"a"new"school"which"includes"some"new"toilets.""However"the"construction"organisation’s"budget"of"approximately"$60,000"did"not"extend"to"flood"proofing"costs"which"the"community"believed"was"important"given"its"past"experiences."""
