i hope all of you and your rabbits are surviving the

hottest summer on record. The extremely hot weather seems to be true for most

of the country. We here in the south, are used to hot summers but this one is proving to be the exception, even for us. We are in a severe drought and without the afternoon thunderstorms to cool things off the heat is oppressive.

The Indiana convention will be here very soon and we are hoping for some large numbers. Al Esterline has worked very hard to make sure we have a great place to stay and a banquet right there at the hotel so we don’t have to drive . I know that those of us driving long distances like that convenience. Important! Please check out Al’s update on banquet reservations in this issue

We have had 3 rabbits donated from prize winning herds to offer in our rabbit raffl e this year. Thanks to

Paul Grundtisch for a pair of Whites and Dave Mangione for one of his Brokens. These rabbits will be on display with their pedigrees at our booth. Each rabbit will be raffl ed individually. The cost of each ticket will be $10.00. We hope you take advantage of this great deal to bring a quality animal into your herd. The money earned from this raffl e will go into the club’s general fund to help where needed.

The new Guidebook is in construction. There are a lot of hardworking people trying to make this guidebook the best one yet. We are still hopeful that we will have it done by convention.

The new offi cers of the Federation will be taking offi ce at our general meeting in Indiana. I ask that you support and lend a hand to all of them so we can continue to make this breed the best it can be. I am also asking all of you to come together (compromise is not a bad word) to come up with a plan to take our New Zealand breed into the future.

I thank you once again for the privilege of serving this club as your president for the past 2 years. I want to offer a special thank you to

all of you who helped with the business of your club during my presidency. To those who chose to criticize what we did, I only hope you also offered solutions. Criticism without suggestions on how to make things better does not benefi t anyone or anything.

I look forward to seeing all of you in Indianapolis and until then I remain available to listen to any suggestions for the good of our club.

Al Esterline will have the blue variety New Zealands on display at the convention. Al will present the Blue variety to the Federation in preparation of his fi rst presentation at the 2012 ARBA convention. So please give Al your support as he begins his journey to add a fourth variety to this great breed.

Before you know it spring will be upon us and yes, our national show located in Fort Worth, Texas. it seems we just got back from PA, and now

we are thinking about the Convention…

I hope you all have been able to get your rabbits through the hot summer? The heat wave has been Nationwide this year. Actually here in Florida it’s been hot, but by no means the “HOT” spots this past summer. Speaking of the Convention, make sure you check the website and of course elsewhere in the Times with all on the Convention news & details. Al Esterline has been hard at work for us all. Please check with Al on how you may help and make sure we thank him for his hard work… Arnie & Sue Schmidt are doing the booth, so please give them a hand. And don’t forget this year we will be able to have our rabbit raffl e, make sure you get your tickets we will have them in the booth… Please see the Banquet info below…

it is time for the ARBA National Convention

again. My how time fl ies. I hope everyone has a couple of nice rabbits to take this year. The weather hasn’t been very nice to us this summer, but Iguess this affects about all of us. It will be niceseeing everyone again.

We all need to thank the Indiana State Clubthat is doing all the work putting the show on. Ittakes a lot of planning and hard work setting upand tearing down a show with that many rabbitspresent. The New Zealand people nedd to thank Al Esterline for all the work he did setting upMotel rooms and setting up the New ZealandBanquet. Also, we need to thank Arnie and SueSchmidt for setting up the AFNZRBA booth inIndianapolis. If you get a chance, please helpman the booth.

Don’t forget to thank Paul and Ann Grundtischfor donating a nice pair of White New Zealandsfor the raffl e. Also thank Dave Mangione for donating a nice Broken New Zealand for theraffl e.

While I am in the thanksgiving mood weneed to thank Richard Gehr and John Neff for allthe time and work they do for the AFNZRBA. Weall set back and enjoy the New Zealand Timesand AFNZRBA Guidebooks and never think of how much work and time these two gentlemenput into it.

The convention will also bring the end of SueBorden and Dave Mangione terms as Presidentand Vice-President. These two people did a loton work for the club and will be missed. Supportour new President and Vice-President.

hello from the everchanging midwest. The

summer has been brutal, fi ckle, and even nice once in a while. The Missouri River has been on a rampage but for the most part our place is

ok. We had a water well near the river that was lost on June 24 but we were fortunate enough to get hooked up to a rural water system the next day. It has proved to be kind of costly as I rely on water to cool the rabbits I have outside. The ones inside have AC so they are fi ne.

I have been busy judging 4-H county fairs. There have not been many rabbits and most of them ha poor quality and most of the decent ones are pretty “long in the tooth”. A few years back I judged a county fair 4-H show and it took two of us to do it in a day--nearly 400 rabbits. I was told that this year that county had only 37 head entered and that 14 of those were one youngster. The numbers are going down all over in spite of the efforts of our dedicated breeders. We will just keep working at it though.

On Saturday Aug 13 the fi rst of our summer fair shows was held in Sioux Falls. Numbers were down in all breeds and about 35 New Zealands were shown to judge Josh Underberg. He picked a nice white 6-8 doe for BOB and a great looking black jr buck for BOS. The doe went on to earn B6 and runner up in show honors. The next fair show is Aug 20 in Rapid City, SD. I should be fun.

I have had to shut off most of my sales as I am concerned about not having enough to choose from for the convention. There are just a few odds and ends around here that can still go “down the road”. but they are not the kind one wants to sell to someone that wants to breed competitive animals.

Hope everyone is getting ready for Indy. I am sure looking forward to seeing everyone again and catching up on all of the NZ news

been a challenge to allof us. The weeks of 90-100 degrees, and the highhumidity which doesn’t

seem to have given us a break!! We broughtseveral bred Does and Herd Bucks into thebasement to keep them cool. The fans have beenrunning non-stop. We have had several days witha heat index of 115 degrees!

Cold water was a must twice a day. I had todrain the automatic waterers sometimes twicea day to be able to have fresh cold water for therabbits. For me plastic water bottles proved tobe the worst at the end of the day. The water was warm...I also found it critical to watch thefood intake of each individual rabbit. Alwaysfi nding myself adjusting each rabbits food intakedepending upon the weather. High humidityalways presents a challenge with the food asI fi nd myself dumping food....economical it isnot, but only the best for the rabbits health.(it get soft and spoils). We have gone to feedinga small amount in the morning and then againin the evening. The fresh food certainly has notallowed them to be stressed. With all of this saidwe hope that everybody has some good rabbitsfor Indy. This show should prove to be a “GOOD”show according to Al Esterline. He is diligentlyworking on this show. A thank you sent to PaulGrunditch for your kind donation for the rabbitsfor the raffl e.

rabbits.Trod thru 2 feet of snow at minus zero degrees only to fi nd frozen water bowls to now where its 100

degrees in the shade,heat indexes in the 120’s and fans running 24/7. I believe we’re all a few french fries short of a Happy Meal. We’ve got to be crazy. Sometimes I wonder if its worth all the hard work you have to do. But like the saying you get out of it what you put into it and when I place a rabbit in the top 10 of a big class or win BOB, BOS or BIS it makes it all worth wild. Remember it’s just a hobby we all enjoy.

Not much happening here in KY. Local shows pretty much over just the state fairs starting up later part of the summer and early fall. I’m looking forward to some cooler weather and seeing everybody at Indy this Oct. Until then keep those bunnies cool.

this New Zealand Times entries will be in for our national convention in Indy. I hope that we will a large entry of new zealands. In many parts of our country the weather hasn’t been the best for raising rabbits. In the Northwest we have beenvery fortunate. The weather hasn’t been reallyhot. However, the thing that has bother us moreis deaths from “ERE”. If you don’t know anythingabout it, you are very lucky. Rabbits that aremost vulnerable in our area are the weanlingto 12 weeks of age. We have found the use of Neomician Sulfate in water does help.

Our new New Zealand Guide book should befi nished by convention time. We need to giveRick Shipe, John Neff and Dick Gehr a big thanksfor all their hard work putting it together. Andto all the people that contributed articles andinformation for it.

We had a good turnout of new zealands at our state convention in June. On Saturday therewere 64 shown with a white shown by WallyStickelmeyer being BOB and on Sunday JudyCurrie had BOB with a white. There was a goodshowing of blacks and broken varieties and afew reds.

National’s in Leesport was a good show for the club. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you that gave money for specials and ads for the 2012 spring nationals in Texas. We’re looking forward to going to Fort Worth and cooler weather.

hello again from Iowa. I hope everyone’s

rabbits have survived theextreme heat this summer.It seems like the heat

in the month of July was just relentless withtemperatures in the upper 90’s and high humidyalmost daily. I’ve had the same amount of fansfor years but this summer I had to go buy severalmore fans just to keep my barn cool. As I’mwriting this article county and State fairs are infull swing and by the time this article is printedour Iowa State fair will be over. I always enjoygoing to the fairs even though it has been veryhot this summer. As the weather cools the stateconventions will be starting and before we knowit the fall convention will be here in Indy. Iexpect to see a big New Zealand show this fallin Indy because of the central location and itseems like everyone I talk to has bred lots of rabbits for this fall.

I would like to thank Rick Shipe and everyonewho helps him for putting the new guidebook together. This is very important because itserves the club for the next fi ve years as thestandard for the New Zealand breed. Also Iwould like to thank everyone for buying ads inthe book to help with the cost of printing it.Many of you know I also raise Californian rabbitsalong with the New Zealands. I thought I shouldmention that a good friend of mine and longtimeCalifornian rabbit raiser Wayne Coffey passed away this July. Wayne was a very good rabbitbreeder and had one of the top cal herds in thecountry. This past weekend (Aug 13) I attendedWaynes complete herd dispersal auction inHartsburg Ill. I have raised rabbits for over 20 years and I have never seen or attended aauction like this. It was held at the Hartsburgcommunity center and the placed was packed.People from all over the country were their inthe tiny town of Hartsburg. I have never seen acomplete herd up for auction before especiallyone of this quality. There was 92 cals up for auction and they brought the rabbits in 10 at atime and gave us roughly 20 minutes per batchto look at them. The auction started at 9 in themorning and was over just before 4 o’clock. Itwas a huge success with almost all the rabbitsbringing a very good price. It was a historic sale

imissed the last mailing so Iam behind times. We

had a great time at Nationals and that whole group did a great job. I know we had a good time. Teddy Dixon will

be missed greatly. When I think of Teddy tears form we have the state fair coming up next week and he was one of them that has been going for a long time he is one of the last. He will be missed by are whole family. I’ve been around Teddy all my life starting in ILL with 4-H then going to shows, fairs, and Nationals.It was a shock to here he a stroke and passed on. I hope you kids are having fun showing at the fairs. I enjoy going. Well I hope your rabbits made it thur the summer its always something. Seemost of you at Nationals.

2011 ARBA ConventionNew Zealand Information ~ FINAL UPDATE

iam getting excited about the convention; itcould be the greatest ever. It has been very

hot this summer, but the other day I heard thatTexas has had 31 straight days of over 100 degreetemperatures, so I don’t feel quite so bad. I havebeen working on this convention project sinceone year ago January. We are now only a coupleof months away from the convention. The MartenHouse Hotel has worked with us to put togetherthe best economic and the best facilities withouthaving to leave the building...

Updating information about our offi cial AFNZRBA hotel headquarters The Marten House and LillyConference Center. The Marten House is owned byand is affi liated with St. Vincent Hospital and is onthe same campus. It is in a prestigious Northeastside of Indianapolis, on 86th street with shoppingand restaurants. The Marten House is exactly 9.3miles from the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds.Maps will be available at the New Zealand booth.The New Zealand club block of rooms has beenfi lled, but the Hotel will still offer the $60.00 plustax, per night, till September 29, 2011. Provided,space is available. As of July 1st. we have 73rooms reserved, that is great. The Marten Houseis a non-smoking facility, since it is owned by thehospital but you can smoke outside

There is a coin operated laundry room for thehotel occupants. The indoor pool is very nice andit also has tables that you can sit at and visit. Thepool hours are 6-11 pm.

We have a hospitality room reserved, that willbe available for the NZ people getting togetherand visit. Saturday night will be a special getacquainted night in the hospitality room. Mondaythe 31st there will be a Halloween party night,come dressed. As of now the room number is1117. The hospitality room will be open everynight. If you have a special beverage bring with.

(VERY IMPORTANT)On Sunday October 30th our show day, the

restaurant has 99% agreed to open at 5:00 amfor the rabbit people so that we can get to theshow room, which opens at 6:00 am.

The restaurant in the hotel has changed; it isnow called 18-81 Grill.

The American Federation of New Zealand Rabbit Breeders, Inc. will donate $50 towardsthe cost of trophies of Best New Zealand and the Best Opposite Sex New Zealand or two trophies (as the Board decides). TheFederation, from the auction monies, willguarantee $300.00 for Specials, if approved by the Board of Directors and said money is available. This is to be placed on Best Display of each Variety or Group, provided there is at least 100 in each variety or group. If not, said money will be prorated.
