ANZAC CEREMONYOn Friday 3 May 2019 the school held an Anzac Day ceremony.

The ceremony was attended by members of the school community and the local Laurieton Sub Branch.

Thankyou for our wonderful school leaders who led the assembly and the buglers.

Lest we forget

PRINCIPALS REPORTNetball Success

Congratulations to Eliana Pagotto for her success in making it through to the North Coast Netball trials in Grafton on Wednesday 29 May. We wish you all the best. Go Eliana!

Cross Country Carnival

What a great day of student participation. Well done to all of our students that ran a very long way! Good luck to all of those students who have progressed to the Lower North Coast Cross Country Carnival in Kempsey on Monday 27 May. Super thanks to Mrs Forster and Mrs Haste for their organisation.

Film by the Breakwall

What a night of celebration on the red carpet and in the main theatre at Majestic Theatre. Congratulations to all of our stage 2 students and their teachers for the production of their films. 3P’s film has been selected to be shown at the Bryan Brown Film By Festival in Sydney on the 21 June. A special achievement. Thanks to Mrs Haleblian, Mrs Harris, Mr Baker and Mr Pringle as well as special support by Mrs Clark and Mrs McNiff.

NAPLAN Update

Our Y3 and Y5 students are currently sitting the 2019 NAPLAN assessments. This year the assessments, with the exception of Y3 Writing, are all online. With only a few very minor technical is-sues, the online platform has been well received across the state as well as at our school.

Grandparents Day

Looking forward to seeing many of our Grandparents next Wednesday to celebrate just how important they are. I’m also looking forward to tasting one of Mrs Whiting’s scones with jam and cream and having a nice chat with our grandparents.

Dance Festival

Please note tickets for the Tuesday night, 18 June, performance of all Lake Cathie items go on sale this coming Monday 20 May. Dance students will also receive a note regarding transporta-tion for the Dance Festival rehearsal and a request for a dance levy to help cover the ongoing costs of costume purchases, dry cleaning, repairs of costumes and building to our number of jazz shoes worn by all students in our performances. Unlike some of our neighbouring schools, we do not charge for tuition per term. Thanks you for your support of our dance program.

Peer Support Program

Our senior students are finalising their lengthy and in-depth train-ing to be our K-6 Peer Support Leaders. Peer Support sessions begin in a few weeks and we are looking forward to implement-ing this worthwhile endeavour, targeting wellbeing and student friendships as well as resilience and tolerance and acceptance of others.

Athletics Carnival

Please join us for this great event next Tuesday 21 May at Laurie-ton Oval. Information about the carnival can be found on one of our Fact Sheets, a new section of our school website. Thanks to Mrs Cowan and Mrs Watson for their leadership in this area.

P&C Volunteer Voucher

A huge thanks to our P&C for their ongoing spirit and volunteer-ism for all of our kids! Special mention to Michelle McKenzie for her outstanding leadership of the BBQ at the State Election as well as the organisation again for the Federal Election P&C BBQ. Some great fundraising to go towards our new playground inclusions. Michelle receives a gift voucher in recognition for her leadership of these two great initiatives and her positive spirit in her commitment to the school and its P&C. Thanks Michelle!

Yr 3 Formal Assembly

We invite everyone to our Y3 Formal Assembly on Monday 27 May. At this assembly we will see the four films prepared for the Film by the Breakwall. The assembly will start shortly after 1.45pm in our hall.

Great work team!

FILM BY THE BREAK WALLLast Wednesday and Thursday as well as this Wednesday, our Stage 2 films have been screened at Majes-tic Cinemas in the very first Film By the Break Wall event. 25 short films planned and created by primary and secondary students across the Hastings Valley Community of Schools were shown to sold out audi-ences. It was very special for our students and their families to be able to see their learning materialise on the big screen. Our Lake Cathie PS created films will also be shown at the upcoming Formal Assembly on Monday 27 May.

LAKE CATHIE PS IS KOALA SMARTKoala SMART is a Lions Club project aimed to inspire, motivate and educate primary and secondary students, along with the local community, to actively participate and embrace change to save our koalas. This project is an educational and creative arts project for schools within the Kempsey and Port Macquarie Hastings Council areas as these are specific areas that fall within the local Area of Regional Koala Significance (ARKS). These are areas where koalas are known to exist and where growth in a healthy koalas has been possible because of valuable genetic diversity.

The educational component of the project will run throughout 2019 with students in Term 2 starting to answer the question: What would you do to save the koala? Later in the year, schools will receive a half-metre 'Hello Koala' sculpture to design a theme for and paint. All sculptures will be put on public display to showcase the creative work of students.

Stage 2 and 3 students have already started developing a deeper understanding of the threats and needs of our local koalas. In a fortnight, Stage 2 will be travelling to the Koala Hospital to see how sick koalas are cared for and to build a better under-standing of how we might be able to save the koala. Over the coming weeks, students will be developing a solution to the project question so please keep and eye out for information and/or events that we might plan for. Any expertise available within our parent community would be greatly appreciated. If this is a special area of interest of expertise, please leave your details with the school office. We would love to hear from you!
