A Message from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Statement on School Threats

February 10, 2020

Since the beginning of the school year, Montgomery County has experienced several threats directed at schools throughout the County. These threats, directed toward other students and/or the school community, have come in various forms, but primarily social media. Some of these threats have been direct while others have used suggestive words and/or images. These threats have proven not to be credible after detectives had conducted thorough investigations.

Many of the people making these threats have motives that range from wanting to disrupt school activities to making the threat as a prank.

The Montgomery County Department of Police fully investigates each threat and works to identify the person or persons responsible for making the threat. If a person makes threats, regardless whether it is a prank, he/she can be criminally charged. Charges may vary, but threats to schools can include the following:

• Education Article 26-101-Disorderly Conduct/Disruption of School Activities

• Criminal Law 3-1001-Threat of Mass Violence

• Criminal Law 6-107(a)(2)-Threat of Arson/Destructive devices

The Montgomery County Department of Police urges parents to consider the following points: 1. Monitor your child’s social media and talk to him/her about

using social media responsibly. 2. See something, say something – If you or your child become

aware of a threat or other suspicious activity that is concerning, please call police. In regard to social media, please do not share the concerning message – again, call police.

3. Remind your child that any threat made will be investigated, even if the child’s intention is to be humorous or as a retaliatory prank.

Members of the Montgomery County Department of Police and the Montgomery County Public Schools continue to work in partnership to maintain safe schools for students, staff, and our community.

Calling All Parents of NJHS Students! Our group plans to join many other teams at Clarksburg High School on Saturday, May 16, for this year’s Relay for Life, Upper Montgomery County, one of the major fundraisers of the American Cancer Society. We need a few parent chaperones for this event. Volunteers—and their NJHS student members—can sign up for a three hour commitment of fun and volunteerism. If this cause hits close to your heart and you can help out with this event, please come to a short (30–45 minute) informational meeting on Tuesday, February 25, at 7pm in the Media Center. Hope to see YOU there! — Mrs. Claxton, NJHS Sponsor

SSL News Here are some reminders about submitting SSL forms to ensure approval so your form is not returned for correction or denied altogether:

• Be sure to use the most recent version of the Verification Form (Sept. 2018 version) https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/forms/pdf/560-51.pdf

• Be sure to complete the form in blue or black ink or typed (no pencil).

• Be sure to complete all requested information on the form (especially student ID number, dates of service) legibly.

• Be sure the student reflection section is complete (this means answering all 5 parts of the prompt).

• Be sure to get a parent signature (the form labels the signature line as “Parent/Guardian/Eligible Student Signature.” Only students who are 18 years of age or older are “eligible” to sign their own forms. Middle school students still require a parent/guardian signature.

• Be sure the organization is pre-approved for MCPS SSL by checking the MCVC website. Look for the MCPS SSL Banner. https://montgomerycountymd.galaxydigital.com/agency/

• If the organization is not pre-approved for MCPS SSL hours, but is certified non-profit (https://www.guidestar.org/search), you may complete and submit an Individual SSL Request form (https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/forms/pdf/560-50.pdf) at least 2 weeks prior to any service with the organization.

• Be sure the service meets all required criteria according to the SSL Guidebook (https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/departments/ssl/homepage/SSL_Guidebook_ENG_18-19.pdf).

• All forms for SSL hours from June 15, 2019 through May 31, 2020 must be submitted by June 5, 2020.

Superintendent’s Student Service Learning Award Students who complete the 75 required SSL hours and submit required paperwork by Friday, April 3, 2020 are eligible for special recognition. The Superintendent’s Students Service Learning Award is presented to eligible students at the Baker MS Awards Night. Check the current number of total number of SSL hours earned through the myMCPS Student/Parent Portal.

SSL and Take Your Child to Work Day Some organizations are telling employees that students can or may earn SSL hours for participation in Take Your Child to Work activities. According to the coordinator for SSL for all of MCPS, “This opportunity does not count for SSL hours for MCPS students. Take Your Child to Work Day is a school day, and students may not earn SSL hours during school hours.”

Contact Mrs. Becky Nelson ([email protected]), Baker’s SSL Coordinator, if you have any questions about SSL.
