Welcome
Welcome to Navitas English and the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program.
Navitas English is one of the largest and most respected of Australia’s quality English language providers. For over 20 years, we have been delivering services and courses to strengthen the language skills and employability of our students with qualified and experienced staff. The SEE program is funded by the Commonwealth Government to help job seekers improve their communication, literacy, numeracy and computer skills to prepare for work or further study.
This handbook has important information about the SEE program. Please keep it with you while you study at Navitas English.
The Classroom
Your CourseAfter you attend your interview you will be placed in a class and given a timetable. Your timetable has your classroom and teacher’s name on it - so keep it with you.
Your training can be either full-time (20-25 hours) or part-time (10-19 hours). Classes are held in the morning or the afternoon.
During the course you will study in groups, you will work on different projects, you will learn how to write your resume and cover letter, and how to apply for jobs.
SEE program students study units from the Foundation Skills Training Package (FSK).

Students can enrol in the following FSK qualifications:
• FSK10119 Certificate I in Access to Vocational Pathways
• FSK10219 Certificate I in Skills for Vocational Pathways
• FSK20119 Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways
You will be asked to give feedback about your course as you study at Navitas English. Your feedback is very important as it helps us improve our services.
Your AssessmentsYour teacher will assess your skills as you learn. When you pass the selected units for an FSK level you will get a certificate. If you finish some, but not all, of the selected units you can get a Statement of Attainment. If you attend every day and pass your assessments, you will get a certificate and move to the next level. Students who attend regularly progress faster than those who do not attend regularly.

The ACSFAt the end of each 200 hours of training you will also need to show that you have improved your skills in either reading, writing, oral communication, learning or numeracy from the Australian Core Skills Framework.

Your Learning
At Navitas English, learning is interactive and the teacher/student relationship is informal.
When you study in the SEE program, you will:
• work in pairs and groups
• use computers and mobile devices
• do projects
• do homework
• listen to guest speakers
• celebrate different events
• follow your college on Facebook
You need to bring:
• a pen
• a pencil
• a folder
• a notebook

Student Rights
As a student, you have the right to:
• quality teaching
• a safe and supportive environment
• support for your learning and pathways to work
• receive timely feedback about your learning progress
• give feedback about your course
• make complaints
• be respected
• be free from discrimination
• privacy
• access your information

Student Responsibilities
As a Navitas English student, you need to:• attend classes every day
• arrive at class on time and remain until class finishes
• show evidence for your absence from class, e.g. text message or medical certificate
• respect students, staff and other cultures
• only use your mobile phone for learning in the classroom and take personal calls outside the classroom
• ask permission to record or film anything in class
• eat and drink outside the classroom during breaks
• follow safety directions
Tell the college or your teacher:• when you are absent from class. If you are absent and don’t call or text, your teacher
will call you. We send your attendance and absence information to your Jobactive provider every week. If you are absent for a week and don’t call the college, you may be withdrawn from class.
• when you need to leave class early.
• if you change your address, telephone number or your emergency contact person. This will help us to communicate with you or send you important documents such as your certificate. The college needs a current emergency contact number for safety reasons.
• when you need to stop your study.

College Life
Student Information• You have a SEE program orientation before you start classes to help
you settle into the college.
• There is a Student Code of Conduct. It is important to read and understand the concept of acceptable student behaviour.
• There are student computer areas in the college. Laptops for class use and free WiFi to use with your personal devices are available for educational purposes only.
• There is a student area for coffee and lunch breaks.
• The Navitas English SEE program has a Facebook page where you can find out what’s happening and post your comments.
• The Student Representative Council (SRC) meets with college management to give feedback to improve student services and help organise college events. Every class has a representative on the SRC.

College Health and Safety
Smoking is not permitted in Navitas English colleges. You can only smoke in set areas outside the building.
Navitas English is committed to providing you a safe and healthy learning environment. We ask that you please consider the following:
There is a fire drill every term to practise leaving the building safely. Students need to follow teachers' directions during a fire drill, and childcare staff help the children exit the building. Exit diagrams are in classrooms and around the college.
If you are sick or injured at the college, you must tell your teacher or another staff member.
You need to report anything dangerous you see in the college e.g. water spilt on the floor, a fire etc.

Complaints
If you have a problem with your class or with your College, talk to your Trainer first.
If you still have a problem after talking to your Trainer, talk to the Team Leader at your College.
If your issue is not resolved at the College, you may contact the Employment Programs Manager on 1300 798 111 or email [email protected].
If your issue is still not resolved, you may contact the Government Services Program Manager or the General Manager, Government Services on 1300 798 111 or email [email protected].
If you are a SEE student and feel your issue is still not resolved, you may contact the Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) on 13 38 73 .
If you are still not satisfied with the outcome of your complaint, you may contact the Commonwealth Ombudsman on 1300 362 072 or by email [email protected], or by completing an online form at www.ombudsman.gov.au, alternatively by attending one of their offices. Note: this agency will not usually investigate a complaint unless raised with the department first.
