We are delighted to have Smith College alumna Lynden B. Miller, ’60 joining us on this voyage. She is a public garden designer in New York City and the Director of The Con-servatory Garden in Central Park, which she rescued and restored beginning in 1982. Based on her belief that good public open spaces can change city life, she has designed many other gardens and parks in all five boroughs since that time. She is an adjunct professor at New York University’s Department of Art History in the Urban Design and Architectural Studies Program.

Her work in New York City includes gardens for Bryant Park, Wagner Park in Battery Park City, Madison Square Park, Columbia University, and The New York Botanical Garden, which named a daylily after her. Her latest projects are landscape improvements to the campuses at Stony Brook University on Long Island, Princeton University, and Hunter College; improving Union Square Park; and overseeing the garden at the Museum of Modern Art.

Mrs. Miller was trained as a painter and studied horticulture at The New York Botanical Garden before beginning her public career. She is on the Board of Trustees of the Central Park Conservancy, New Yorkers for Parks, and the New York Botanical Garden. In October 1999, Smith College honored Mrs. Miller, describing her as one “who uses the beauty and enchantment of public gardens to instill new pride in communities and change the personal and public experience of urban life.”

Victoria offredi Poletto is Senior Lecturer Emerita in Italian Language and Literature at Smith College, where she has taught since 1987. She was born in England of Italian parents and received a B.A.Hons. in Italian &

French from the University of Birmingham, England and an M.A. equivalent in second language acquisition from the University of London. Prior to joining the Smith fac-ulty in 1987, she taught at the Istituto Universitario di Lingue e Letterature Moderne in Milano, was respon-sible for the British Council English language program in Isfahan, Iran, for two years and later directed her par-ents’ language school in Kent, England. Since 1993 she has directed the Smith JYA in Florence program three times. For the past few years she has collaborated with Giovanna Bellesia on the published translations of works by Dacia Maraini and is currently translating works by a new generation of writers in the field of migrant literature in Italian. Her areas of expertise are translation and the pedagogy of second language acquisition.

Victoria returns every year to her second home on the Italian Riviera and enjoys deepening her knowledge of the intriguing communities of nineteenth century Brit-ish and American expatriates who chose to spend their winters in the Mediterranean and who created libraries, museums, and, above all, magnificent gardens.

larry Goedde is a Professor of Art His-tory at the University of Virginia. He has taught in the McIntire Department of Art since 1981 and has served the department as Chair since 1996. Profes-sor Goedde received his bachelor of arts in the history of art from Washington

University, St. Louis, Missouri, and went on to earn his M.A. and Ph.D. in art history from Columbia University. A scholar of Baroque art in Europe, Professor Goedde’s areas of specialization include Northern Baroque art—especially 17th-century Dutch painting, early Nether-landish painting, and Old Master prints. He has lectured and written extensively on the topics of seascape, land-scape, and still life, with publications including his book, Tempest and Shipwreck in Dutch and Flemish Art: Rheto-ric Convention and Interpretation, and various exhibition catalogues and essays.

Castello Garzoni Gardens, Collodi, Italy

Dear Smith Alumnae & Friends,

Mediterranean vistas have inspired countless artists, architects, and horticulturists since time immemorial. On a custom-made voyage along the brilliant coastal arc between Italy and Portugal, experience a veritable open-air museum of botanical, architectural, and historic treasures. Here every piazza preserves a memory, from the conquering Romans or Moors to the arts of the Renaissance.

Our lyrical voyage explores some of the Mediterranean’s most spectacular sites, including the riches of Florence and the masterful art collections along the French Riviera. In the vibrant city of Barcelona, we will trace the flowering of the Gothic style and the birth of modernism in Spain, while in Granada’s fabled Alhambra Palace, as in Seville, we will reflect upon the flourishing of Moorish culture in Andalusia.

We are privileged to have with us renowned public garden designer Lynden B. Miller, ’60, who will focus our experience of enchanting gardens, including La Mortella on the island of Ischia; the French Provencal gardens of Sainte-Claire le Chateau, once owned by Edith Wharton; and the regal landscap-ing of Granada’s Generalife Gardens. Also joining us are Victoria Poletto, senior lecturer emerita in Italian languages and literature at Smith College, and Larry Goedde, Professor of Art History at the University of Virginia. Their expertise will enhance our understanding of the sites visited along this journey.

Our ship is the all-suite Clelia II, which accommodates just 100 guests in 50 spacious and elegant suites and fosters an intimate setting of like-minded travelers. We hope you will join us on this voyage to the resplendent gardens and cultural centers of the Mediterranean.

Warm regards,

Carrie Cadwell Brown, Ed.M. ’82Executive Director Alumnae Association of Smith College
