GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

Support and Resources to Help Your Clubs

Greetings to District 6560 Rotarians!

Unbelievably we are already nearly completed with the first quarter of our Rotary Year. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience to visit clubs throughout our district. I have truly enjoyed my

club visits so far and I thank you for hosting me so gra-ciously!

I have the wonderful pleasure of seeing how you are engaged in the lives of your communities, and I’m encour-aged as I find that you are open to trying new ideas as you strive to be healthy and vibrant clubs with engaged mem-bers and an incredible vision for your future.

My primary objective is to support your club and the mem-bers of your club — to provide tools and support to make you successful in carrying out your projects both locally and globally. Please reach out to me anytime if I can be a resource for you. As members of Rotary, we are out to change as many lives as we can through Rotary Serving Humanity. Thank you for your service to your community!

In this issue don’t miss!

2. Learn about how you and your club can become more engaged in World Polio Day on October 24, 2016 to help make and impact and support Polio eradication.

3. Share your stories! Through my club visits I have seen some amazing Rotarians at work in their local commu-nities, fully engaged in making a difference in people’s lives. I want to showcase your clubs’ achievements and how Rotary leaders take action in your community. I need your help! Submit a brief narrative or article de-scribing how Rotary leaders take action in your com-munity. Submit a brief narrative or article about your club’s project/event in a Word document. Add “Rotary Club Story Idea” to email subject line. Submit story ideas and photos anytime to: [email protected]

4. Ask a friend or colleague to join you at your next Rotary event! They will thank you later!

— Katie L. Smardo, District 6560 Governor

World Polio DayIt’s on the horizon — we are about to eradicate a disease…and you can be a part of it! We are 99.9 percent of the way toward ending polio.

While the World Health Organization has confirmed two cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in Nigeria — the first cases in the country since July 2014 — the program has overcome outbreaks before. Rotary will not stop its efforts to ensure that every child is born into a polio-free world. Many think this could be the year we see the last naturally occurring case of polio.

World Polio Day is coming up on October 24 and can be celebrated and shared from anywhere in the world.

GIVE! Help us reach a polio-free world and donate today. Every donation that we commit to polio eradication will be tripled by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Contact your club’s Foundation Chair or logon to My Rotary at www.rotary.org to donate!

TAKE PART! Check out the resources, ideas and opportunities to participate at http://www.endpolio.org/take-action. Learn about polio eradication, how to get involved, and how to make your voice heard on World Polio Day.

And remember, Rotary International maintains an extensive inventory of high-resolution photos, HD videos, advertisements and graphics to support polio eradication efforts. Use these materials to reach out to news media in your community.

Take ActionJohn Hewko tells us that on November 19, a team of Rotary staff will join Rotary Senior Leaders and Rotarians from Arizona and around the world in El Tour de Tucson to raise funds for polio eradication. The 104-mile ride, attracts more than 9,000 cyclists a year. It is one of the top cycling events in the U.S. The Miles to End Polio fundraising goal is $10 million.

Would you like you like to join the team? Take part in the Indoor Ride to End Polio! Ride a stationary bike at your local gym or at home any time from November,12-19. Register today or feel free to encourage fellow Rotarians to register HERE and ride with us in Tucson. Rotary Youth Exchange Has 10 Openings for the Year of a Lifetime!Rotary District 6560 has the ability to send out 10 students on exchange for the 2017-2018 school year. This is more than normal. We need your help to get the word out to all club members in the district. An Information Night was held Sep-tember 15, but it is not too late for area students, sons, daughters, grandchildren, cousins, and friends to learn about Rotary Youth Exchange and the opportunity to study abroad.

RYE is for students ages 16-17, typically sophomores applying for their junior year abroad. It is a full academic year in another country. Students live in a host home and attend a local high school. It is the best program of its kind, and one of the least expensive programs in existence.

Please encourage your club and Rotarians you know to share this information with your local schools and other interested individuals.

Questions? Contact 6560 RYE Chair Joe Mitchell at: [email protected] or [email protected] 317.877.4157 (home) | 317.416.9705 (cell)

By using this health check, you’re taking a step to maintain your club’s health and preserve its value for members and the community.

Vocational Training Team Begins First of Several TripsI wanted to let you all know that the first of our Vocational Training Teams started work in Amman, Jordan on Sunday, September 18. The work is covered by the Global Grant co-spon-sored by the Rotary Club of Greenfield and Rotary Club of Amman-Petra with significant, much-appreciated District Designated Funds (DDF) from our own Rotary District 6560.

The team of six Riley professionals, led by Dr. Mark Turrentine, left at various times on Friday, September 16, making a formal Rotarian send-off impossible. They returned at various times on Saturday, September 24 in the evening.

The plan is for ten open heart surgeries on children from all over the Middle East including skills transfer with the Al Khalidi Medical Center staff during the week. The second of at least four VTT trips covered by this Global Grant is

planned for November 18-26, 2016 and the third for the end of February or beginning of March in 2017.

Dr. Anne Farrell is writing the blog during this trip. She is telling the sto-ries of their days and the children and families' lives touched by this collabo-ration. Please read/follow the blog and comment to support the team!

https://rileymiddleeastmissions.wordpress.com/

Thank you all for your support and contributions in making this wonder-ful work possible which highlights "Rotary Serving Humanity!"

Yours in Rotary Service,Stephanie Kinnaman, Gift of Life Chair
