The annual Spring Show will open on May 5th and reception is May 13th from 5 to 8pm. The awards will be presented then by juror Mike Bailey. Try to attend, it is one of our larger shows and a great gathering of our watercolor friends. There is also our City Hall Show during the summer this year. It is in July through September which will give you all a chance to enter while NAWS is on a little break. Don’t stop painting just because our society is not encouraging entries, you need to keep those brushes wet and wild! There are still 2 more workshops coming up in April and May. Kim Johnson will be here from April 27th to 29th and Mike Bailey heads his workshop May 10th to 13th. Contact SanDee Kinnen if you would like to sign up for these final NAWS workshops. Since this is the last newsletter before we take our break, I would like to personally thank all the people on the board and our wonderful chairs who have volunteered their valuable time to help the Northern Arizona Watercolor Society. We have an active and stimulating group that has great expectations in spreading our knowledge and mastery of this wonderful medium. I am also very grateful to all who have helped me during my term as president. It has been an enriching experience that I will always treasure. You have all supported me in this endeavor and I thank you all for your encouragement and collaboration in my 2 worthwhile years in this position. So keep up those artistic ideas and representations in watercolor, and have a wonderful summer. “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Pablo Picasso

I would love to have you all to come to our May meeting for installation of Officers. There will also be some new Committee Chairs to introduce. We are all so very grateful for those who are taking on these volunteer positions. You are the backbone of NAWS and we could not have our success without you.

Jo Toye - Experimenting with “Tar Gel” to Create Exciting Design TWO one-day workshops Tues. Oct. 4th OR Wed. Oct. 5th 2016 9:00 am -4:00 pm Location: Sedona Red Rock State Park: Cost $90 –includes park entry What in the world is Tar Gel? In this one day workshop we will be exploring the use of Tar Gel on both a white and black surface. I will be working with Golden’s fluid acrylics but if you wish to work in watercolor that is possible. We will be exploring the use of “line” as an understructure that will help guide us to “Find” interesting shapes and design possibilities within our unstructured beginnings. We will be working very small - no larger than 10” X 10”. The idea is not to have, “finished paintings”, but small samples of each technique for future reference. Jo will provide Step - by - Step handouts for each technique that will correspond to each small sample you create. Because you won’t be tied up in knots worrying about the finished product, (remember these are just technique samples), you will have more freedom to enjoy the process and move away from your usual way of working.

The Raleigh Kinney Workshop was excellent for a class of top notch artists. We had perfect weather for painting outside on the second day, a new experience for many of the students and the area behind the Methodist Church provided a perfect setting. Raleigh's sense of humor and his talented approach to capturing the "light" made the class enjoyable for all levels.

Landscape Painting & the Four Compositions This BobBlast is a demonstration of the four graphic compositions I use when painting a landscape. The first composition is a simple Horizontal Design. Where the sky meets land is where the most contrast is. So all the attention and focus goes there first. I start out with only 3 values - black, middle grey and white. Then... *Tone the surface with the midtown grey *Next, determine the horizontal edge. Make a high horizon line for a painting of the land or a low horizon line for a painting of the sky. I prefer a large brush to put in the basic shapes. Remember, no details yet - just three values at first in black, grey and white. The second composition is referred to as Tunnel Vision. The focal area is usually at the point with the most contrast. All drawing lines can also lead to that point. The painting will have the effect of looking through a tunnel - the end being the focal point. As before, start with only three values - black, middle grey and white. Tone the surface with the midtone grey. Next. determine the focal point (the whitest spot) - and finally, brush in the black composition and design, using a large brush. The third composition we refer to as Off Balance. This composition shows "a lot of something" in one area and "just a little something" away from everything else. This focal point stands alone, drawing attention with not much else around! This design is also called "Cantilever”. As before, using only black, grey and white paint, I start by first toning the entire surface with a midtown grey. Next, with black paint, I "rough in" the composition design - and then the final focal point of white... all by itself. I prefer a large brush to put in the basic shapes. Remember, no details yet - just three values at first in black, grey and white. The fourth composition is the Golden Section. This classic design finds the "sweet spot" (focal point) and has been used since early history. Without getting into the math of how this works, try my easy approach. Divide the painting surface into thirds along the top and the side. This will create a grid that looks like a tic-tic-toe sketch. Where the lines intersect - choose only one of those spots for your focal point. This is also known as the center of interest. Next, tone the surface with the midtone grey. After deciding which will be the sweet spot/focal point sketch loosely with black paint, keeping your eye on the focal area. There you have it! My four compositional designs in a landscape painting using only black, grey and white. Remember, when the going gets rough and out of control, a good strong design composition can pull the painting back together. Keep it simple. BOB BURRIDGE STUDIO

Congratulations to Mary Dove: Mary recently completed a 3 month show hanging in the Sedona City Council Chambers and city offices. One watercolor was juried into the Arizona Watercolor Association (AWA) Spring Exhibition, "Window or Door" April 6th to May 6th at the Burton Barr Central Library in Phoenix.

Here’s an INCREDIBLY fun video showing how to add transparent fluid acrylics to a monochromatic acrylic or watercolor painting. I can’t WAIT to try this! This also works well with a regular painting that just doesn’t have enough contrast or color. http://www.robertburridge.com/Weekly_BobBlast/Issue_88/video.html

From Jim Black… on creating an "Impact Area” for each of your paintings… It is not a center or a point. It is an "Area". So from now on let's call it an "Impact Area". To emphasize your "Impact Area", •  Give it the brightest color •  The highest contrast •  The sharpest edges. •  The most details. Give your viewers a direction, HEY! - look at me, rest your eyes, look around, look around my impact area, now go look at the rest of the painting, but come back to my impact area. That's what you want to express to the viewers. You need to have fun with the "Impact Area”. it's your chance to be original and creative.

Sedona Open Studios Tour Set For April 29 & 30 and May 1 Working artists in the Verde Valley will be opening their private studios to the public at the end of April for the Sedona Visual Artists’ Coalition’s (SVAC 13th annual Open Studios Tour. The event is free, self-guided, and runs daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Friday April 29 through Sunday May 1, 2016. The SVAC annual tour has become known as a golden opportunity for art lovers to visit with professional artists in authentic working environments. It also offers a venue for local artists to shine, engaging visitors and fostering a community that values the arts. Past tour visitors report that one of the distinct pleasures of shopping on the studio tour, whether for their own collection or for gifts, is spending time with the wide variety of artists who offer an up close and personal look at how and where a piece is made. Open Studios’ co-chair Mike Upp explains that artists enjoy demonstrating their creative processes as they show off their work spaces and, more importantly, make that special and personal connection with buyers. Open Studios provides an opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the creative process. A major appeal of such an experience is the chance to buy gorgeous, one-of-a-kind and locally produced artwork direct from the artist Open Studios’ artists create in a widely diverse milieu including glass, ceramics, painting, mixed media, digital art, fiber, photography, jewelry, and watercolor, a testament to the flourishing diversity of the arts community in the beautiful Verde Valley. This year there will be over 50 studios participating in Sedona, the Village of Oak Creek, Cornville, Cottonwood, Clarkdale and Camp Verde. Brochures with a complete list of participating artists, including a map, will be conveniently available at numerous locations around the Verde Valley, including hotels and restaurants as well as the Sedona Arts Center and the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center in Uptown Sedona. For complete information, including artists’ name and medium, studio locations, a downloadable map, and suggestions and ideas for planning a personalized tour, please go to the SVAC website.
