Vince FazioDirector, School of the Arts

Welcome to the 2010 - 2011 Annual Catalog!

Our educational programming is based on ideals of both artistic quality and diversity. Our fac-ulty is made up of working artists who are exemplars in their fields, and love to share both theirtechnical knowledge as well as their own inspirational sources. Technique can be taught - it canbe broken down into steps and materials and processes. Inspiration is both a starting point forartists and something that magically happens in the midst of technique. Time seems to stop andyou are truly immersed in what you are doing. This moment of going beyond technique is oftenreferred to as 'getting into the zone'. The ultimate purpose of technique may be just that - to getus beyond it.

Knowing that makes technique all the more important.

If technique is a path into the 'zone', excellent instruction clears the way for our whole being toengage in bringing our imaginations to life!

We invite you to come and experience your own artistic breakthrough in the wonderful settingof Sedona, a veritable Shangri-La in the midst of the high desert landscape of Northern Arizona. You are encouraged to allow some time on either side of your artistic immersion to enjoy thistruly beautiful and inspiring environment.

P.S. Our catalog is in some ways a snap-shot of an ever-evolving program. Browse our websitefor additional workshops and Art Experiences as they develop. Workshops created after this cat-alog's production will be clearly designated as such on the website.

The PerceptualMomentMaster Class Landscape Intensive Stuart ShilsOct 27, 28, 29 2010TUITION: $850Actual cost: $1020

This workshop will concentrate on deep-ening and cultivating our visual sensitivityby looking critically at nature and paint-ing with the loaded brush - aspiring tobroad yet particular summations of form, naturalistic color and clarified visualmood. Emphasis will be placed on theperceptual processes in front of nature, the editorial response that follows in thehead of the painter, the way that percep-tion translates into paint and on shaking

up and/or questioning what is meant by“finish”. “Rather than bringing home con-ventionally finished trophies, I’ll encour-age visual excitement, expansion of per-ceptual understanding and fun. Fun iswhy we really paint after all!” Each dayStuart Shils will discuss and demonstrate:1) how to eliminate irrelevant distractionsand think clearly about our approach tothe visual encounter outdoors. 2) how tothink conceptually, perceptually and tech-

nically about establishing a firm founda-tion and sense of order in the earlieststage of the painting 3) to consider theimportance and place of drawing withinthe overall process of work 4) how to ana-lyze light 5) the development of color onthe palette and its relationship to thepainting 6) what is perceptual unity asopposed to the literal description ofobjects or “subject matter” .

Plein Air to StudioIntermediate /AdvancedMichael WorkmanApril 18 - 22 2011TUITION: $850Actual cost: $1020

For Michael Workman, the act of paintingusually starts with an emotional responseto the landscape and is ultimatily com-pleted by the viewer through their emo-tional response to the painting. A delicatebalance is achieved in his paintingsbetween realism and abstraction. Thelandscape can be dramatic, moody andsubtle. Michael Workman's art is blendedin a play between opposites on a varietyof levels: classicism and romanticism, thinand thick paint, warm and cool colors, careful planning and spontaneity. "Thatflirtation between yin and yang is bydesign, because in Workman's view, mas-tering those opposites is a source ofunparalleled magic." (SouthWest Art,September 1996).

This workshop will emulate Michael’sworking process by starting in the beauti-ful Sedona landscape for two days of pleinair research and then developing work inthe studio for the remainder of the week.Michael will demonstrate and lecture forall the students with one-on-one time fordiscussion and critique designed to helpeach student achieve their own personalvision.
