Vision

That’s the milestone we reached this year as our 15 millionth guest visited the Sedgwick County Zoo on May 4, 2010. It’s a mind-boggling number for us all, but certainly a milestone we celebrate, respect and can all be extremely proud of.
Just think for a moment, since we opened in August of 1971, 15 million guests have:
• Experienced the sights and sounds of our world right here in Kansas. From the jungles of Africa, to the forests of Australia and beaches of South America, guests have a first-class passport to witness this breath-taking international animal collection.
• Learned about conservation, species survival plans and how each one of us can make a difference in saving endangered species, our environment and the planet.
• Supported the Zoo through single day ticket purchases, memberships, personal monetary gifts and volunteer time. Collaborating together, we awre able to create an environment of special accomplishments.
But most important was the opportunity to introduce the mission of our Zoo—to inspire discovery, appreciation and respect for animals and nature—to so many people.
The people of this community continue to rally in support of Sedgwick County Zoo. For all that we have achieved and for all that we will achieve in the coming years, I thank you for your friendship and for helping make our vision to be a world-class zoo for our community a reality.
See you at the Zoo,
Mark C. Reed Executive Director

Fifteen Million
but they had little idea of the great things that were in store. The Zoo has seen steady progress through the past three decades with major exhibits opening every few years. This is quite an accomplishment for our community.
The Downing Gorilla Forest opened in 2004 to the excitement of thousands. Then Cessna Penguin Cove delighted adults and children alike. Today the Slawson Family Tiger Trek continues to inspire guests every day. It is with great pleasure that we welcomed our 15 millionth guest and look forward to many more.
On May 4, 2010 Sedgwick County Zoo welcomed its 15 MILLIONTH guest. When Sedgwick County Zoo opened in 1971, families were pleased,

“I can’t believe it!” said Suzanne Armendariz, “I never win anything! This is so exciting! Thank you so much!” Suzanne, accompanied by her son Ethan, were rewarded with two season tickets to the 2010 Sedgwick
County Zoo Capitol Federal Summer Concert Series; four tickets to one of the upcoming INTRUST Bank Arena events and a gift basket courtesy of KWCH Channel 12; plus a lifetime membership to the No. 1 outdoor family tourist attraction in Kansas—your Sedgwick County Zoo. Ethan was a bit shy at first, due to all the excitement, but before the party was over he was blowing kisses and giving out high-fives to Zoo staff.
“I’ve always believed that zoos are a reflection of their community,” said Executive Director Mark C. Reed. “Our community has been so very supportive and without that support we would not be here celebrating 15 million guests and still counting.”

While feared and often killed on sight throughout the world, venomous snakes are very popular animals in zoos. For instance, many guests know our king cobra by name and ask questions about him if he’s not readily visible in the exhibit. Sedgwick County Zoo has many interesting snakes including pythons, boas, and pit vipers. With the opening of our Venomous Snake Gallery, we are able to introduce guests to a few new snakes that now call the Amphibian & Reptile Building home: black mamba, boomslang, Gaboon viper, and cascabel.
page 6 | A&R Desert Room becomes Snake Gallery
The very qualities that protect these snakes in the wild from predators and allow them to be supreme hunters have made them a target of man. As human populations continue to grow and expand into the snakes’ natural habitats, dangerous encounters with venomous snakes will continue to increase. It is our goal to teach as much as we can about these fascinating animals and our hope that snakes will be respected and preserved rather than feared and misunderstood.

Venomous snakes have been greatly feared and misunderstood the world over. Much like tigers, bears, great white sharks, and other large carnivores they have been the victims of superstition, exaggeration, and relentless persecution.

Zoo AmbassadorsWhat do you do when you have a waiting list of Zoo volunteers? Bridget Landers, Director of Volunteers, created our Zoo Ambassador program. This program allows new, interested volunteers to get hands on experience while enhancing our guests’ Zoo experience.
Zoo Ambassadors are stationed around the Zoo to help answer guests’ general questions. At the successful conclusion of 25 hours of ambassador time, volunteers can move to an Exhibit Ambassador position. Volunteers will learn more in depth information specific to the exhibit area in which they wish to become an Animal Care Volunteer. After completing 25 hours of volunteering as an Exhibit Ambassador, volunteers can become an Animal Care Volunteer. Animal Care Volunteers work side-by-side with our Zookeepers to help care for our animals.
Volunteer StatisticsIn 2010 Sedgwick County Zoo had the privilege of working with a total of 1,002 volunteers who donated 43,150.52 hours, saving the Zoo a total of $549,737.62. “You can understand how valuable our volunteers are to us,” said Landers “they really do help us accomplish more than we could ever do on our own.” Thanks to you, our volunteers, for what you do to help make the Zoo the No. 1 outdoor, family tourist attraction in Kansas.

Gerry Kasperek, Sedgwick County Zoo 2010 Adult Volunteer of the Year is always fun to be around with his positive attitude. Gerry has volunteered in the Jungle Bird department since 2009. During his 338 hours of service he has shown an outstanding willingness to do anything the keepers ask of him. He has always shown up ready to work as scheduled and has even gotten his wife Teri involved in volunteering as well. Gerry is truly an ambassador for the Zoo as he volunteers in other organizations in Wichita spreading his Zoo knowledge along the way. Gerry even completed additional volunteer training far above and beyond what was required of him. He also donates time by volunteering with the Ape Awareness group and at various special events throughout the year.
Blake Little, the 2010 Teen Volunteer of the Year for Sedgwick County Zoo, is passionate about his volunteer work. He first started volunteering in teen programs during the summers of 2008 and 2009 before becoming a regular volunteer in the African Veldt in 2010. Donating 1,726 hours of service, he has taken a lead role in helping the new teen volunteers learn routines and even take on projects like deep cleaning the elephant pool, all while being a full time student. Blake takes advantage of every opportunity to spend time at the Zoo. He is truly an asset to the Zoo as he volunteers not only in the Veldt but also during many of the special events.
Sedgwick County Zoo Recognizes Volunteers for Service in 2010Sedgwick County Zoo would like to recognize Gerry Kasperek and Blake Little with the 2010 Volunteer of the Year award. “We love our volunteers,” said Volunteer Director Bridget Landers. “Every day I’m impressed by their dedication and enthusiasm to work together to make the Zoo the best it can be.”

Congratulations to the 2010 Friends University recipients of the Mark C. Reed Zoo Science Scholarship. Each year students are selected for this scholarship based on their career goals, college activities and grade point average. The Mark C. Reed Endowed Scholarship was the first major scholarship given to the Friends University Biology Department.
The Zoo Science degree is a four-year bachelor’s degree program hosted by Friends University in conjunction with Sedgwick County Zoo. Students attend general biology classes at Friends University as well as classes held at Sedgwick County Zoo and taught by Zoo professionals, enabling students who plan on a zoo or aquarium career to obtain hands-on experience as well as academic experience.

Over $60,000 goes to support worldwide conservation programs
Visiting Sedgwick County Zoo gives guests an opportunity to see wild animals up close and thus gain understanding, appreciation, and respect for some magnificent creatures that many people may never get to see in the wild. But another way we strive to help animals is by donating to conservation programs, which allows us to play a part in safeguarding the world’s wildlife. Conservation initiatives such as those listed protect wild animals both in captivity and in their natural habitats. Sedgwick County Zoo has been recognized with national and international awards for its support of field

conservation programs and successful breeding of rare and endangered species. In 2010, Sedgwick County Zoo was able to designate $57,876 for various conservation programs. Another $2,528.05 was collected from the public donation boxes in the Zoo and through our new Gift Shop program that allows guests to round up purchases to help fund conservation programs. Just by coming to the Zoo, our guests help support our contributions to worldwide animal conservation.

page 14 | Zoobilee 2010: Isle of Iguana
Zoobilee patrons spent the evening sampling food and drink, dancing
under the stars and bidding on great silent and live auction items. A variety of area restaurants served samples of their best dishes and drinks, from old favorites to exotic new delicacies. Following the live auction Zoobilee guests danced the night away to the sounds of The Iguanas.
Proceeds from the event go to support daily Zoo operation and help keep Zoo daily admission prices affordable. As part of the Zoo’s commitment to conservation, a portion of this year’s funds will go to support the Puerto Rican crested toad initiative. Thanks to everyone for making our Zoo and this years’ Zoobilee a success. We couldn’t do it without your continued support.
