02 Security and sustainability for global supply chains
For a world in movement
Freedom of movement – for goods, services and people – is of the
utmost importance for the world economy and for our daily lives.
Consequently, sustainable security concepts must be integrated into
each phase of the supply chain and within the entire logistics
process.
Freedom of movement, however, poses a considerable challenge for
security. Logistics, by its very nature, is a vulnerable and
favored target by criminals and for terror attacks. Nowadays,
airports, ports and logistics centers are more vigilant than ever.
Transport companies must offer a sustainable and efficient service
throughout the world without neglecting security. For the entire
sector, the challenge is to prevent losses while increasing
flexibility and process efficiency.
Johnson Controls helps its customers to adapt to the demands of a
constantly changing world. Johnson Controls is an innovative sector
leader in building and facilities technology as well as fire
prevention and security systems. Using a combination of unique
expert knowledge with global resources, tailor-made security
solutions can be offered for people and buildings around the world.
Legal requirements are increasing and new risks are emerging, but
Johnson Controls is constantly leading the way for new technologies
and solutions, while ensuring that its customers are always one
step ahead.
Our systems and services include, among other things:
24/7 emergency call and service control center
Global access control solutions
Fire alarm systems and fire extinguishing systems

Today’s trade routes are becoming ever more complex and demanding,
with the outcome being that only the most resilient and flexible
security solutions can prevent losses in the supply chain, protect
the infrastructure and ensure the safety of employees.

04 Security and sustainability for global supply chains
With the continued development of supply chain solutions and the
integration of electronics into almost all industrial goods, items
to be transported are becoming smaller, but are of high value. As a
result, the transport and logistics sector is now faced with new
security challenges.
Cargo crime is a significant part of illegal economic activity.
Police statistics do not yet record cargo theft separately, so the
known figures are based on case figure records. The Transported
Asset Protection Association (TAPA) suspects that there are more
than 7,000 freight and truck thefts in Germany every year. The
German Federal Association for Business, Transport and Logistics
(BWVL) assumes that an attack takes place on German roads every 20
minutes – statistically speaking. The German Insurance Association
(GDV) estimated that in 2007 the resulting damage through goods
loss was around 300 million euros for the German insurance sector.
And a study carried out for the EU parliament even showed an
economic loss of 1.5 billion euros – for Germany alone. Within
Europe, companies, according to the EU, lose 8.2 billion euros
every year through the theft of high- quality and high-risk
products and goods while being transported. Compared with 2015 and
2016, the number of criminal attacks on global supply chains
increased in 2017 by 89%. For 139 cases examined in 2017, the
average claim came to approx. 400,000 euros per attack. Overall
claims for these 139 attacks came to almost 55 million euros.
Supply chain security is very important for freight
The estimated number of thefts and actual claim level is actually
much higher; shipping companies often don’t make the event public.
The police and insurance industry therefore call upon transport
companies that offer enhanced security precautions, such as thicker
tarpaulin and tracking devices. Coding systems or mobile video
monitoring systems are, for example, measures that can protect the
cargo on the truck. First, we’ll discuss how freight routes can be
made safer overall. For the moment, there are few secure parking
spots with video monitoring and surveillance staff.
Maximum protection for your supply chain
The issue of freight and storage safety for companies is becoming
an ever greater part of supply chain security. Minimising transport
risk will occupy European firms considerably more in the future.
Supply chain security is becoming a significant component of the
value-added chain.

Security 3.0 – a holistic approach to securing assets
Johnson Controls, as a driving force for innovations in the domain
of security in the 21st century, is combining RFID, BLE and UWB
technologies, IP protocols, advanced access protocols and fire
alarm solutions to give our customers a critical advantage in
security. We follow internationally recognized security standards
to ensure a uniform level of security throughout the world.
The global presence of Johnson Controls places us in a unique
position of being able to guarantee the security of your supply
chain. To fulfill the increasing demands of logistics companies
throughout the world, Johnson Controls is developing unique
services and solutions. We are also an active member of the
Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA), an organisa- tion
that brings together global producers, logistics companies and law
enforcement authorities to avoid losses in international supply
chains. TAPA establishes international standards that enable
logistics companies to respect global security standards. Our
solutions fully support these standards.
IP convergence
Johnson Controls is driving the current trend towards integrated
system based on IP protocols and technologies. Out-of-date systems
are modernized and replaced, offering an opportunity to link up
logistics and security systems using unified, universal technology.
Control centers can then realize more comprehensive company tasks
and can be monitored and controlled securely from another chosen
site with Internet access.
Access control
Logistics tasks nowadays need to be operated 24 hours a day almost
everywhere. In the field of access control, Johnson Controls offers
simple access control centers right through to highly developed,
cross-site, biometric monitoring systems.
Fire alarm systems and fire extinguishing systems
The development of fire alarm systems is a central aspect of our
business. Johnson Controls combines ultramodern technologies to
detect fires faster and to minimize the damage caused by them. The
protection of transport systems from fire requires constant
vigilance. Our products and services offer comprehensive fire
safety solutions – from space-saving installations for smaller
applications via demanding analog addressable control units through
to large, networked extinguishing systems.
Seamless monitoring of conveyable products and unit goods
Increasing globalisation poses ever new challenges for logistics
service companies, too. Shipments must be weighed, their dimensions
recorded and freight volumes calculated. Ever more frequently,
security aspects are coming into play, too, justified by the
increasing number of packages sent across borders, especially as
air freight. Our joint DWS solutions offers a fully integrated
security system throughout the process chain: “Measure, weigh, read
barcode and X-ray”. The result is seamless documentation of
dependable profile data for all manufactured shipments (small
items, packages and freight).

08 Security and sustainability for global supply chains
The quantity of transported goods has constantly grown in recent
years, with the strongest growth in road traffic. The manufacture
of goods away from our economic centers and the industrialisation
of emerging nations will further fuel this trend. This means that
manufacturers will have to transport ever more goods over ever
greater distances.
At the same time, the value of transported goods is rising. The
transfer of production of electronic products to Asia is leading to
a further increase if the value of individual cargo. So the
international cargo theft mafia is eying these supplier chains with
ever greater desire. Comprehensive protection is therefore a basic
requirement for economic trade.
At the same time, logistics requires an open infrastructure and has
to be constantly prepared, even in far-flung places. The challenge
is to protect both transport facilities and the transport itself.
The solutions of Johnson Controls concentrate on both
aspects.
Remote surveillance
Every facility can be monitored remotely: Operating depots,
entrance gates, loading ramps or trucks, to name but a few. We
develop algorithms that trigger alarms in surveillance centers if
something unusual or suspicious happens, and everything can be
connected to networks using the latest IP technology.
The solutions of Johnson Controls include:
Video surveillance – create a consistent, reliably high level of
security and ensures that official requirements for specific
sectors are adhered to .
Video alarm verification – help recognize false alarms and
increases overall security. Also includes monitoring of critical
conditions (flooding, temperature).
Video surveillance for unattended deliveries – trained employees in
central control centers monitor activities on site, including
deliveries outside opening times.
Security of freight and trade routes
Johnson Controls works closely with its partners and uses its key
know-how to secure border crossings, central transport systems and
transit goods from targeted attacks.
Security and sustainability for global supply chains 09
4 million customers rely on Johnson Controls
Intrusion detection
The disappearance of goods through burglary is one of the most
serious threats to logistics companies. The intrusion alarm systems
by Johnson Controls use enhanced IP technology to provide reliable
protection. Based on video images or sensors, these interactive
systems can be monitored remotely.
Vehicle tracking
Vehicle tracking by Johnson Controls secures freight, trailers and
drivers in national and continental goods transportation and makes
a significant contribution to securing trade routes. Security
solutions by Johnson Controls including camera surveillance of
loading and unloading, GPS tracking for movement reports and full
control of goods.
Temperature monitoring
Many goods, in particular in the pharmaceutical sector, must be
kept at a constant temperature to maintain their efficacy. We help
our customers to monitor the cold chain for the entire duration of
transportation to protect these valuable goods.
2 million containers in shot
Millions of tons of freight are handled every day in the world’s
ports. So, large container facilities need security and fire alarm
systems with a high level of integration. A new port in the United
Arab Emirates with an original capacity of 2 million containers
required a solution to keep the entire port in view. We installed
23 systems with around 25,000 sensors and integrated them into into
a single interface to achieve this. At the same time, the system
architecture had to be able to integrate the port’s existing
systems. The solution by Johnson Controls included a standard- ised
interface with several connection points that now ensure the
security and protection of the entire area.
Our customers trust us with protection and security because they
know that we have the experience and thoroughly understand their
individual security requirements.
Enhanced monitoring for international logistics providers
For seamless security of its valuable goods, an international
transport and logistics company opted for the video surveillance
system of Johnson Controls. The aim: To protect the goods from
damage and provide comprehensive protection from theft in the
warehouses. To do this, we installed dome cameras to monitor the
warehouse entrances and the areas that are difficult to see. A
digital video recorder (DVR) enables better event analysis, in
addition to recording images, by offering a precise view of
archived film material. Using our systems led to a higher level of
security and an appreciable reduction in the burden on security
staff.
