1 Report on the Natural Gas as Transport Fuel in Mining, Plantation & Logistics Sectors 2014, 5 th – 6 th November 2014, Balikpapan, Indonesia The first NGV-CNG related event to be held in Balikpapan, Indonesia for the mining, plantation and logistics sectors was successfully held from 5 th to 6 th November 2014 at the Novotel hotel. It was attended by 130 local and overseas delegates and 3 exhibitors. Local delegates were mainly from the mining and plantation sectors in Indonesia and these delegates expressed keen interest in using NGV/CNG as one of the way to improve their operation costs and also to reduce their carbon foot print. The mining and plantation sectors uses a substantial amount of diesel for their vehicles. The Indonesian mining and plantation sectors were paying high price for their diesel as the diesel were unsubsidized and have to be transported long distance by road or/and river to the mine and plantation sites. Some mining and plantation companies in Balikpapan had embarked on pilot projects to convert their diesel vehicles to use natural gas and these pilot projects were presented at the two days forum. A 3 hours workshop on Heavy Duty Vehicle (HDV) conversion to natural gas by Dr. Pipon Boonchanta, an NGV expert from Thailand, on Day 2 of the forum generated a lot of interest and questions from delegates. Natural gas offers an attractive substitute for the mining industry especially those located in Balikpapan as these mines are near the LNG Bontang Liquefaction Plant. Trials were conducted by two mine companies, Berau Coal and Indominco in Balikpapan for their mine haulage diesel trucks. Due to the nature of the truck operation and large quantity of diesel consumed daily, Diesel Dual Fuel (DDF) system and LNG onboard storage are the most suitable systems for these trucks. The LNG was supplied to the coal mines from Bontang Liquefaction Plant by using LNG road tankers. Below are pictures of the two pilot projects that were taken from the presentation on “Natural Gas Supply And Utilization – A Supplier’s Perspective” by PT Pertamina Gas Niaga at the forum.
