Digital Point & Shoot vs. Digital SLR

Through-the-Lens (TTL)SLR cameras use “through-the-lens” (TTL)metering. This means that the exposure isdetermined from the amount of lightactually passing through the lens whichwill “take” the picture, providing muchgreater accuracy.

SLRs have no parallax error. The photogra-pher sees exactly what the lens sees—especially important when taking close-upphotographs. Another advantage is thatthe photographer can attach the camerato a telescope or microscope, fit diffusersor masks over it, and still see the preciseimage the lens will produce on film.

Interchangeable LensesAnother major advantage an SLR has overa point-and-shoot camera is that a lenscan be removed and other lenses andaccessories can be fitted to the camerabody. This versatility, along with highimage quality, is a prime reason for buyingan SLR. In addition SLRs offer photogra-phers enduring construction and compati-bility with a broad range of accessories, including lenses from which to choose.

Flash CapabilitySLR cameras can be equipped with power-ful flash units which can light subjects upto 70 feet away. Flashes on point-and-shootcameras have a limited range, usuallyabout 10 or 15 feet. SLRs can also beconnected to or synchronized with studio-lighting equipment for more sophisticatedexposures. Photographers can hook uptheir SLR to studio lighting equipment anduse soft lights or hot lights to createappealing portrait and product photos.

◆ Digital point-and-shoot cameras areeasy to use, give good results, and arevery affordable. Today megapixel + res-olution can be had for well under a$400. Long the choice for family pic-tures and vacations.

◆ They are also used in business. Theycapture portraits for corporate IDcards, illustrating real estate brochures,or putting images on web sites. Point-and-shoot cameras are auto everything:focus, flash and exposure. Takingpictures is a snap—look through theviewfinder, press the button, and thecamera captures the picture.

◆ SLRs cameras are better suited forcapturing images in low-light situationsand have more precise focusing. Theoption to select shutter speed andaperture and the flexibility to usedifferent lenses give the photographergreater control over the final result.

◆ They feature autofocus and a choice ofmanual or a range of automatic expo-sure modes. However, for more sophis-ticated projects, such as creating salesflyers, catalogs, technical and trainingmanuals, and many other applications, photographers are much better servedby an SLR.

Shutter Speed and ApertureSLRs offer a wide choice of shutter speeds. A fast shutter speed is necessary to freezeaction successfully. A slow shutter speed, on the other hand, is often used to capture animage in very low light or for artistic effect—to exaggerate running water, to interpretmotion poetically. The adjustable aperture of an SLR likewise affects depth of field whichrepresents how much of the foreground and background are in focus. With a head shot, for example, photographers will opt for a shallow depth of field. As a result, the subject issharp, but the background, which would distract the viewer, is blurred, almost abstract.

Manual ControlWith an SLR camera, the photographer has complete creative control. With a point-and-shoot, the camera has control—it automatically selects the aperture and shutter speed, thereby reducing the amount of influence the photographer has on the final image. SLRsrequire the photographer to make more decisions. But, that very control means the cam-era can be adjusted to a variety of lighting and focusing situations. For example, a backlitsubject easily confounds most automatic exposure systems. A knowledgeable photogra-pher however, can compensate by using a greater exposure than the automatic recom-mendation. Similarly, a window between the subject and the camera can fool mostinfrared automatic focusing systems. Manual focus wouldn’t be fooled.

SLRs and Point-and-Shoots: Which do you need?A good way of looking at SLR versus point-and-shoot cameras is to think of each as avery specialized tool—like different types of wrenches. Picking the right tool makes allthe difference in doing the job right.

The single-lens-reflex (SLR) camera provides many capabilities not found in snapshot or point-and-shootcameras – such as interchangeable lenses and other accessories – which give photographers greater controland flexibility. SLRs allow photographers to check image sharpness visually. The effects of changing lenses oradding attachments are immediately visible in the viewfinder. Technically, the SLR differs from the point and shoot camera in that an SLR uses one lens for both the viewingand taking of a picture. Just before the SLR shutter opens, a mirror, which has been reflecting the image intothe viewfinder, flips up, allowing the image to fall on the CCD—as the shutter opens. This makes for moreaccurate framing, especially when photographing close-up subjects. But there are many other differences.

➤ The camera’s large-format, high-resolution CMOS sensor captures a staggering 6.3 mil-lion pixels (3072 x 2048 pixels) to deliver images that will astonish you with their depthand detail. As it captures images, the sensor amplifies each pixel's electric charge, forultra-fast image scanning that's simply unmatched. A superior sensor design raises themaximum ISO speed while lowering image degradation during long exposures. The sen-sor also has a 3:2 aspect ratio, traditional to 35mm film, for a familiar compositionalfeel. In short, the CMOS sensor allows the EOS Digital Rebel to achieve film-like qualitywhile offering all the advantages of digital technology.

➤ Developed by Canon exclusively for the CMOS sensor, the DIGIC Imaging Processorgives Canon digital cameras a major advantage over other brands. Typical processorsaddress stray light and false colors (noise) by making adjustments after an image isrecorded which invariably degrades resolution. DIGIC prevents noise from being pro-duced in the first place, so images are clearer, truer and extremely lifelike. DIGIC also offers “parallel” processing, making the EOS Digital Rebel super responsiveand agile, and high-capacity buffer means you won’t have to wait between shots. Speedalso gives the camera’s automatic systems added precision, so focus, exposure andwhite balance are optimized for deep detail, smooth gradation in highlight areas, andcolor that is utterly natural.

➤ Canon’s world-renown EF lenses lead the industry with technical achievements like theelimination of camera shake, smooth operation and unparalled sharpness and colorreproduction. The EOS Digital Rebel is compatible with over 50 of these lenses, fromultra wide-angle to super telephoto and everything in between, including fish-eye,macro and tilt-shift lenses.

“Digital Trinity”Advanced digital performance gives you visibly better images. The EOS Digital Rebel isequipped with Canon’s exclusive “Digital Trinity”: a 6.3 Megapixel CMOS Sensor, DIGICImaging Processor, and the unparalleled optical quality of Canon EF lenses.

Intelligent Built-in FlashThe camera’s high profile, built-inretractable flash unit makes takingpictures with well-balanced foregroundand background exposures a snapthanks to Canon’s exclusive E-TTL(Evaluative Through-The-Lens) flashexposure metering system.

This highly intelligent flash pops upand fires automatically in Full Auto,Portrait, Close-up and Night Portraitmodes.

Flash is also automatic in low light and backlit daytime conditions, where auto-matic flash output reduction ensures that illumination is never harsh or over-done. The camera automatically reduces red-eye effect as well.

The flash recharges quickly (about 3 seconds), has a guide number of 13 (at ISO100 in meters), and has coverage angle of an 18mm focal length’s angle of view(equivalent to 28mm in 35mm format).

The Digital Rebel also supports such advanced features as E-TTL WirelessAutoflash; Flash Exposure Compensation; Flash Exposure Lock, and FP Flash(high-speed sync), opening up a world of creative options.

(EOS Digital Rebel has the same flash capability as the EOS 10D. For more information on E-TTL flash exposure control, see page 147).

Canon EF LensesThe EOS Digital Rebel is compatible with more than 50 CanonEF lenses— from ultra wide-angle to super telephoto, plus fish-eye, macro and tilt-shift —making the transition to high qualitydigital even more affordable for film based Rebel and EOSusers. The world’s largest selection of autofocus lenses, CanonEF lenses are favorites of professional photographers, andworld-renowned for their optical quality and endless versatility.

Canon’s new compact EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens — cre-ated exclusively for the Digital Rebel and available only in the Digital Rebel Kit —approximates a 28-90mm zoom lens (in 35mm format). By reducing the distancefrom the rear of the lens to the imaging sensor and reducing the size of theimage circle to accommodate the camera's imaging sensor size, the lens pro-duces high image quality with superb resolution at all focallengths. The new lens is also smaller and lighter than conven-tional lenses because of the shorter backfocus distance.

Similarly, the newly developed Canon Zoom Lens EF 55-200mmf/4.5-5.6 II USM covers a 35mm equivalent zoom range ofapproximately 90-320mm when used with the Digital Rebel.Together, these two lenses provide 35mm-equivalent zoomcoverage from 28mm to 320mm

7-Point AF System withSelectable Focusing Points

7-point AF lets you place your subject vir-tually anywhere in the frame, knowing thatfocus will be where you want it andabsolutely accurate. The 7 focusing pointsare conveniently and unobtrusively super-imposed on the viewfinder, cover a widerange for superb precision, and are manu-ally selectable for a high degree of control.Ideal focus is achieved whether orienta-tion is vertical or horizontal, with moving, still or even off-center subjects, and evenin low light/low contrast situations.

Three Distinct AF ModesThe EOS 10D incorporates three distinctAF modes to cover any situation:

One-Shot AF: Provides sharp, instantfocus for stationary objects. You can lockin focus, then recompose the shot, know-ing focus won’t be lost, regardless ofwhere the subject ends up in the frame.

Predictive AI Servo AF: Tracks movingsubject to predict proper focus with unbe-lievable precision. Makes incredible stop-action shots simple and automatic.

AI Focus AF: In this mode the camera willautomatically choose between One-shotAF and AI Servo AF, depending on thecharacteristics of the subject.

3 fps Continuous Shooting◆ Powerful image-processing engine and

high-capacity buffer memory (32 MB),enables shooting up to 9 frames at fullresolution while firing at 3 fps and this ismaintained regardless of recordingquality, ISO speed and subject conditions. For your convenience, the actual num-ber of continuous shots the camera isachieving is displayed in real time rightin the viewfinder.

◆ And to capture that crucial image, thecamera’s 100ms shutter release lag time(same as a film camera) ensures that thecamera is activated almost instantly.

◆ Shutter speeds are available from 1/4000to 30 seconds (1/3- and 1/2-stopincrements) and bulb. Long exposurenoise reduction technology dramaticallyreduces digital “noise” in exposures aslong as 30 seconds.

35-Zone, AF Point-Linked Evaluative Sensor and Triple Metering System

The camera’s new evaluative sensor takes the guesswork out of exposure. The sen-sor takes metering information form 35 zones, evaluates the data and weighs it intel-ligently based on several factors. The result? Complex scenes are properly exposed, and multiple images of the same scene are consistent.

Center-weighted Averaging Metering: With emphasis on the center of the viewfind-er, metering is carried out over the entire picture area.

Exposure Bracketing and Customizable Camera FunctionsAs accurate as Canon’s metering system is, there are times when some correction isneeded to better interpret your creative vision. The EOS 10D lets you fine tune exposuresup to ±2 stops in 1/2- or 1/3-stop increments. Or, use auto exposure bracketing toautomatically capture a series of normal, over- and under- exposures of the same scene.

For more control, there are 17 custom functions with 61 setting for fine tuning functionssuch as mirror lock up, long exposure noise reduction, built-in flash synchro timingcontrol, manual shutter and aperture setting increments, AE bracketing sequence, andrelease button/AE lock button function, to suit your own style of photography. CustomFunctions are easily selectable through and easy-to-use menu that displays text in yourchoice of 12 languages.

Ultra-fine Processing Parameter SettingsImage processing parameters can also be adjusted beforeyou take the shot. You can set up to three sets of ofparameters (contrast, sharpness, color saturation and colortone/balance), with each parameter adjustable to one of fivesettings via rear LCD monitor menu. The color tone/balanceparameter is mainly used to adjust flesh tones for portraits, toward the minus side (redder) or plus side (more yellow).Once parameter sets have been registered, they can be called up on the menu wheneverthey are desired for particular shooting conditions.

11 Versatile Shooting Modes:Pre-programmed shooting modes optimize the camera’s settings to best handle avariety of shooting situations, including Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sports and NightPortrait. There are also other shooting modes, designed to give you exceptionallatitude in creating the images you envision: Intelligent Program AE for fully automaticshooting, Program AE to let you experiment with shutter and aperture combinations,Shutter and Aperture AE, *Automatic Depth of Field (A-DEP) to create a “zone ofsharpness”, full manual, Auto Exposure Bracketing, AE Lock and Flash Off Mode.

* Camera sets the focus and aperture necessary to create sufficient depth of field tocover the distance between the nearest and furthest subjects covered by the 7focusing points.

35-zone Evaluative Metering: Becausethe system is linked to the AF point inuse, metering emphasis falls on thesubject. Exposure compensation is auto-matically activated when appropriate.

Partial Metering: This system offerscareful metering of difficult lighting situ-ations and close-ups by measuring 9% ofthe picture’s center, which is demarcatedwith a circle in the viewfinder.

Recording Media

◆ Record images on compact, easy-to-handle Type I or II CompactFlash (CF)cards or IBM Microdrives.

◆ The EOS 10D matches the professionalquality of the EOS-1Ds in its ability tohandle recording media larger than 2GB.The camera automatically formats theCF card for either FAT16 or FAT32according to the maximum storagecapacity, choosing FAT 32 for capacitieshigher than 2GB.

LCD Playback◆ When viewing recorded images on the

camera’s 1.8-inch (118,000 pixels) TFTcolor LCD, you can enlarge them up to10X in 15 steps for detailed analysis oflighting, composition, camera move-ment, focusing accuracy, facial expres-sion, etc. Simple controls enable hori-zontal and vertical scrolling, as well asviewing of the previous or next imagefrom the same enlarged view. In maxi-mum reduced view, nine images can bedisplayed simultaneously, making it easyto quickly evaluate them.

◆ In playback mode, images that weretaken with the EOS 10D turned sidewaysare automatically rotated to an uprightposition for more convenient viewing.Additionally, rotation data is embeddedin the file as an EXIF tag for greater con-venience when downloading or viewingimages with compatible software suchas Canon’s ZoomBrowser EX,ImageBrowser and File Viewer Utility.

◆ LCD monitor’s backlight is powered bywhite LEDs rather than a fluorescentlight source, delivering greater maxi-mum brightness together with lowerpower consumption. As a result, it canbe set to one of 5 brightness levels, con-serving even more power when brighterlight isn’t necessary.

EOS 10D

ISO FlexibilityThe superior noise reduction of the DIGIC Imaging Engine has enabled Canon to expandthe EOS 10D’s choice of ISO settings, making it easier to adjust to shifting light conditions, achieving not only the highest quality, but the best representation of the photographer’sintent. ISO speed is set automatically between 100 and 400 in 1/3-stop increments inProgram Image Control modes, and 100 or 200 when the flash is used. In addition, the cam-era offers a broad range of manual settings from 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 or 3200 by way ofan ISO speed button on the camera’s top panel that has been added for easier operation.

sRGB and Adobe RGB Color SpaceThe camera has many features that make it ideal for knowledgeable photographers whowant the opportunity to take their talent even further. One of these is the ability to switchbetween standard sRGB color space and Adobe RGB color space. Adobe RGB color spaceis a broader-than-standard color spectrum with relatively low saturation. Use it when youplan to make fine adjustments to color saturation in your finished images.

Extensive White Balance ControlsThe EOS 10D lets you take charge of white balance. Multiple white balance functions enableyou to take attractive, sharp pictures in a variety of lighting conditions – including sunset, incandescent or fluorescent lighting – without having to use filters. It also lets you intention-ally change the white balance to emphasize particular coloration or hues in the subject.Proper use of white balance makes good images great, and the EOS 10D lets you take thekind of control over white balance that was once limited to highly professional cameras.

• Preset White Balance settings include: Daylight, Overcast, Shade (counters strong bluetones typical in open shade on sunny days), Tungsten, Fluorescent and Flash. There is alsoHybrid Auto for effortless shooting, and Custom which lets you shoot a white object in thegiven lighting, then lock the proper white balance via a display on the LCD screen.

• Manually set color temperature from 2,800K to 10,000K in fine 100K increments

• White Balance Bracketing captures three images (normal, reddish and bluish) with oneshot. You select the steps in ±3 whole-stop increments

Built-in E-TTL Flash◆ An automatic retractable flash built into the EOS 10D’s

pentaprism, pops up and fires automatically when shootingin the Full Auto, Close-up or Night Portrait modes, and in lowlight and backlit daytime conditions. It can also be manuallyselected. Features include a maximum X-sync speed of 1/200seconds, a recycling time of approximately 3 seconds, and ared-eye reduction lamp that illuminates before the flash fires.

◆ The EOS 10D can also use EOS series flashes without modification. The E-TTL autoflash-compatible hot shoe accepts Canon EOS-dedicated external flashes, including the 220EX,420EX, 550EX, MR-14EX and MT-24EX. The x-sync contact works with external flash, andthe remote terminal connects to the 3-pin remote controller.

FE Lock: Light reflected from the subjectby a pre-flash is measured with partialmetering for optimum flash control. The main subject can therefore bephotographed at the correct exposureeven when a high-brightness portionexists in the background. Framing canalso be performed without limitation.

High-speed Synchro Photography:Attach the Speedlite 550EX and a high-speed synchro (FP flash) function isprovided. This allows the use of electronicflash even at high shutter speeds.Backgrounds can be blurred intentionallyusing the high-speed synchro function toselect a large aperture.

E-TTL Auto Exposure Flash SystemE-TTL automatic flash exposure is also possible when an

EX-series Speedlite is mounted. This enables greatpictures to be taken with a flash even under

difficult lighting situation. The camera isalso equipped with a flash exposurecompensation function and a first- andsecond-curtain synchronization switchingfunction, that comes in handy whenshooting a moving object in low light.

Canon’s most advanced flash exposure control system, E-TTL (Evaluative through-the-lens)is a flash mode that reads through the lens, but not off the focal plane. This method providesseveral extra features such as Flash Exposure Lock (a method of spot metering with flash)and FP flash mode (the ability to use flash at high shutter speeds). Utilizing a preflash firedafter the button has been fully depressed but before the camera’s reflex mirror goes up,E-TTL uses the camera’s evaluative metering sensor to analyze and compare ambient lightexposure values with illumination reflected from the subject by the preflash. This data isused to calculate and store the flash output required for optimum exposure of the mainsubject, while maintaining a subtle balance between foreground and background.

High Grade Body◆ The EOS 10D’s rigid, ultra high-quality

magnesium alloy chassis not only cre-ates an incredibly strong, stable body, but gives the camera an added measureof solidity and reliability. The black satinfinish completes the high-grade feel.

◆ A more “muscular” pentaprism addspresence, and combined with a spheri-cal grip and rubber skin offers excellentcomfort and handling.

◆ The ergonomically-shaped shutter buttonand electronical dials make even thelongest shooting sessions a pleasure.

Dedicated Buttons◆ An new Assist button and rearrange-

ment of buttons on the camera’s topmake operation even easier and moreintuitive. Other buttons include ISOspeed setting, LCD panel illuminationand Direction Switching (to change thescrolling direction of an enlargedimage in playback). EOS users will findthe shutter button, electronic dials andother controls in their usual EOS posi-tion for a seamless transition.

Laser Matte Screen◆ Comes with a Laser Matte focusing

screen that makes it easy to distinguishthe part of the subject with sharpestfocus when manually focusing.

EF Lens Compatibility◆ The EOS 10D is compatible with over 50

Canon EF lens‚—each micron-engineeredto deliver unmatched resolution andsuper operability.

◆ However, the effective focal lengths ofthe lenses increases approximately 1.6xwhen used with the 10D, while maintain-ing as aspect ratio for a visual perspec-tive that is familiar to the 35mm photog-rapher. Therefore, the coverage with a28mm lens is approximately the same asthat of a 35mm film camera with a 45mmlens (28mm X 1.6= 44.8mm).

◆ The EOS 10D is also compatible withEOS system Speedlites, remote controls, power drive boosters, grips and more, for photographic possibilities that aretruly limitless.

FEB (Flash Exposure Bracketing):Without changing the backgroundexposure level, the amount of flashillumination (using the Speedlite 550EXor Macro Ring Lites MR-14EX andMT-24EX) falling on the subject can beautomatically changed as follows:standard, underexposure compensation, overexposure compensation. Thecompensation range is from -3EV to+3EV, in 1/3 or 1/2 step increments.

E-TTL Multiple Wireless Flash: By usingseveral 550EX Speedlite flashes, multipleflash photography, which normallyrequires a high level of sophistication, can be performed in full-auto mode.

4.48-Megapixel CCD Imaging SensorThe heart of the EOS-1D's image quality is it’s CCD sensor. Aspixels on a digital imaging sensor become larger, they becomemore sensitive to light. This means less digital noise, superiorhighlights and shadow tonalities, and a wider range of contrast islikely. The EOS-1D's 4.48 million pixel CCD sensor is a full 28.7 x19.1mm in size—with square pixels a full 11.5 x 11.5 microns insize (nearly 12 times the pixel size of high-resolutionconsumer-type cameras with fixed lenses.

Imaging EngineHowever, there's more to image quality than just the imagingsensor. The data from the sensor must be processed andassembled to create a finished RGB file. The EOS-1D does thisusing an Imaging Engine, a sophisticated “chip” which producesincredible color accuracy, wide tonal range and detail whileminimizing the effects of digital noise. The EOS-1D’s ImagingEngine is one of the keys not only to its excellent image quality, but also to its amazing speed and performance.

4.4-Megapixel Digital SLRfor Professional Press, Sports andWedding Photographers Setting the standard against which all digital cameras are judged, the

EO1-D features the world’s fastest autofocus and shooting speeds—

without sacrificing any image quality. It offers unsurpassed strength,

durability, and weather-resistance. It provides unmatched control

of images as well as the world’s most sophisticated auto flash sys-

tem for digital SLRs. The EOS-1D offers an unbelievable 8 frames

per second burst mode (up to 21 frames) and incredible top shutter

speed of 1/16,000 of a second. and X-sync at 1/500 sec. Ultra-short

viewfinder blackout time (87ms) allows photographers to clearly see

through the viewfinder, even while shooting at maximum speed. This is

ideal for professional photographers, from sports shooters and photojournalists to

nature and wildlife enthusiasts, enabling them to capture well-exposed and sharply focused images of moving subjects with

an unprecedented degree of efficiency.

The EOS-1D’s full-resolution, 4-million pixel images generate 12MB files, while an "imaging engine" processor generates

both incredible shooting speed and rich tonal range with color accuracy. In addition, advanced technologies applied at both

imaging engine and CCD filtration minimize "false colors". Other high-end features include a Color Matrix function: five

modes provide your choice of two color spaces (standard sRGB or expanded Adobe RGB 1998) and four color characteristics

for sRGB. Choice of three levels of JPEG compression, RAW image mode for best quality, or RAW + JPEG. 10 white balance

modes - including ability to set color temperature in kelvin values. White balance and ISO-speed bracketing functions.

Image-processing customization, including adjustable tone curves, white balance and other parameters. 21 Custom and 25

Personal functions, IEEE1394 interface and full compatibility with Canon's EF lenses and most EOS accessories

The EOS-1D also offers standard professional camera features including variable diopter control, 100% viewfinder coverage,

eye-piece shutter, one-touch depth of field preview, mirror lock, a PC socket for studio strobes, and a remote control socket.

Built to last, the EOS-1D has a magnesium alloy cover and chassis for durability, light weight & excellent electromagnetic

shielding. It has over 70 gaskets and seals, making it impervious to water and dust, and it has durable paint finish equal or

superior to the EOS-1V. The shutter is durability tested to 150,000 exposures, highest of any digital SLR.

EOS-1D

Reduced Color AberrationsCanon effectively eliminates the color aberrations inherent in digital cameras througha combination of optical and digital counter measures for unmatched image quality. Most digital cameras rely solely on optical low-pass filters that incidentally compromiseimage resolution. But Canon adds digital processing technology to its imaging enginethat effectively reduces color abberations at the CCD’s true image resolution throughan originally developed algorithm. This algorithm lowers dependence on the low-passfilter enabling sharper, more natural-looking images. It also clearly demonstrates thatsheer number of pixels alone does not necessarily determine image quality

Eliminate Long Exposure NoiseThe longer a digital imaging sensor is exposed, the greater the likelihood that it willgenerate digital “noise”, similar to “snow” on a TV with poor reception. Canon usessophisticated technology to reduce or eliminate this noise and provide photogra-phers the freedom to use long exposures where necessary. On any exposure longerthan 1/15th of a second, the EOS-1D automatically activates its long exposure noisereduction by generating a second, blank image (with the shutter closed) at the same“shutter speed” used for the actual image. The noise generated in the blank image isthen compared to the original, and that noise is removed from the actual file. Whenfast shooting is more important that noise reduction, a menu setting allows theshooter to turn off the noise reduction

Custom Processing ParametersBy altering parameters in the conversion process, you can “develop” your imageshowever you like. Using the supplied TWAIN driver or plug-in for Macintosh, adjustgradation and contrast with tone curve controls, and minutely customize parameterslike sharpness, JPEG image quality and white balance on your computer. Save up tothree sets of these settings for different situations and apply them any time. You canalso adjust the amount of JPEG compression in-camera.

Color Matrix Function—Like Choosing Different Types of Film

The EOS-1D offers a unique Color Matrixfunction that lets you select different colorcharacteristics as if you were choosing differ-ent types of film. There are five settings avail-able to to cater to different shooting needs(can be applied to both JPEG and RAW EOS-1D images):

➤ Color Matrix 1 (sRGB compatible; Naturalcoloring): Overall natural hues andsaturation

➤ Color Matrix 2 (sRGB compatible; Naturalskin color): Hues and saturation ideal forportraits, with natural skin color

➤ Color Matrix 3 (sRGB compatible; Vividcoloring): Hues and saturation similar tohigh saturation slide film. Ideal when vividcolors are desired

➤ Color Matrix 4 (Optimized for Adobe RGB1998): Expanded Adobe RGB 1998 colorspace, a broad color spectrum with lowsaturation. Ideal when later fine saturationadjustment of profile conversion is planned.

➤ Color Matrix 5 (sRGB compatible):moderates hues and saturation. Ideal whenlater fine tuning of saturation is planned.

High-Precision AutofocusAdopting the EOS-1V’s capacity to capture moving subjects with the outstandingtracking performance and high focusing speed of 45-point Area AF, propels digitalcamera autofocusing into the new millennium. The 45 focusing points are denselypacked and can be manually or automatically selected to meet the needs of thesituation. When multiple points are selected, AF system capabilities are significantlyextended, while the system has been refined to ensure the unconditional reliability, accuracy and high focusing speeds requisite for professional use. While photographershave the freedom to frame images through the viewfinder as they choose, the lens isautomatically brought into focus as soon as the active focusing points cover thesubject. Like a human eye, Canon’s 45-point Area AF tracks and aims true.

One-Shot AF (for stationary subjects)

At its simplest level, all 45 focusing pointscan be used simultaneously for optimumauto focus results. Focusing of this kindhas the power to transform a simplesnapshot into a precisely balanced image. However, the true benefits of 45-pointfocusing become more apparent whenapplied to more demanding situations.

◆ The predictive AI Servo AF system allowsthe tracking of fast-moving objects whilemaintaining precise focus. Sequential pro-cessing regulates an array of events withinthe exposure process, including the arith-metic processing of AE and AF, the drivingof the lens, aperture control, and move-ment of the mirror and shutter curtains.

◆ The precision and focusing accuracy ofthe AI Servo AF system functions within ahigh level of synergy for results that arenothing short of incredible. Using the EF300 mm f/2.8L IS USM lens, the EOS-1D canpursue, focus and continually shoot anapproaching subject at speeds of up to186 mph until it’s as close as 66´ away.

➤ Personal Setting—Up to three personalwhite balance settings can be uploadedfrom your PC to the EOS-1D for use indifferent shooting situation, includingstudio shots with special light sources.

◆ White balance bracketing functionshoots a set of 3 images at the sameexposure while shifting the white bal-ance up to ±3 step in 1-step increments.

Flexible ISO Speed Settings and Bracketing FunctionUnlike a film camera, a digital SLR’s imaging sensor’s ISO sensitivity can be altered freelyfrom shot to shot. The EOS-1D provides a normal ISO range of 200-1600 in 1/3-stop incre-ments, and a Custom Function expands this range between 100 and 3200. But the EOS-1Dtakes it even further. ISO speed bracketing allows the photographer to keep the same shut-ter speed and aperture settings, and have the camera alter the ISO sensitivity to vary theexposure. Finally, Custom Functions allow the user-set ISO speed to be displayed in theviewfinder.

Folder ManagementImages on the CompactFlash card are stored in one master “DCIM” folder. Within this fold-er, you can create additional folders—up to 500 on a a single CF card—and assign imagesto any folder, with the ability to add new folders or change to a previous folder at anytime. All this is done within camera using the menu controls.

Optical Viewfinder The EOS-1D’s advanced optical technologyassures superb-quality viewfinder images togive photographers essential framingsupport. Utilizing Canon’s innovative glassprism with a high refractive index, theviewfinder delivers both 100% viewfindercoverage and an exceptional 0.72xmagnification ratio.

◆ Retractable dioptric correction lens mech-anism allows room for an eyepiece shutterand dioptric correction lens. (Adjustablediopter range is -3.0 to +1.0. Dioptric LensE can be added to extend range.

◆ Unique superimposition display with brightly illuminated focusing points, assures thatinformation is clearly visible even when viewed against a bright background.

◆ Focusing screens are interchangeable, and there are nine screen optionally available

LCD MonitorThe EOS-1D is equipped with a high definition 2˝ LCD color monitor plays back images insingle-image (with information and histogram), 4/9 images and 21 information items.

◆ These include date and time, shutter speed, aperture value, exposure compensation, and histogram of each picture, as well as overexposure warnings, etc. In addition, youcan display the menu function screens to enable setting of red-eye reduction and AEBsettings, and the custom function.

◆ The histogram display shows the overall brightness distribution of the subject. Thisallows you to judge the characteristics of image data not from the subjective impres-sions alone, but on the basis of their frequency distribution. If any portion of the cap-tured image is over-exposed, the high-brightness alarm function indicates its scope byflickering. With the aid of the histogram, the exposure and lighting settings can be finelyadjusted to produce images exactly as desired.

–Create up to 500 folders on theCompactFlash card in the camera

–Assign images to any folder, prior to shooting

–Protect or delete images on a folder-byfolder basis

–Rename folder using Canon driver soft-ware (connection to computer required)

Simultaneous Capture of RAW/JPEG Files◆ Like the EOS-D60, the EOS-1D offers simultaneous

image capture and sequential recording of JPEG andRAW image files. Users can concentrate on taking greatpictures and later select the format that best suitstheir needs. Compact JPEG files are ideal when imagesneed to be used in a hurry, or sent over the web. RAWfiles provide both the best image quality and addedversatility when processing images in your computer.

◆ EOS-1D driver software provides a host of tools andcontrols that process RAW images files as they areconverted into JPEGs or 8- or 16-bit TIFF files.Brightness and contrast, white balance (including aone-step "click" control), tonal curves, sharpness, andeven Color Matrix -the color palette used- can beadjusted by the photographer while your original "dig-ital negative", your RAW image file, remains unaltered.Processing a RAW image only creates a copy; it neveralters the original file.

8 Frames Per Second (fps) Shooting 8 fps - the fastest continuous shooting speed of any digital SLR camera. Until you experiencethe EOS-1D’s total performance in your hands, its specs are just numbers. It’s when youpick it up and feel its responsiveness…feel - but not hear it run through 21 consecutiveframes 60% faster than any other competitive professional digital SLR that you know you’rein the presence of something truly special.

High-Speed Image StorageWith a large buffer memory, the EOS-1D canfire up to 21 consecutive frames (at 8 fps)in its full-resolution, best-quality JPEGmode. That's four million pixels per image.Even more impressively, if capturing bothRAW and JPEG images simultaneously, youcan still fire bursts of up to 16 frames (atfull resolution) at up to 8 fps. A viewfinderindicator is updated instantly to adviseyou of remaining frames in a burst.

Interline Transfer CCD4.15 million pixel interline-transfer CCDmakes continuous 8 fps operationpossible. It also functions as its ownshutter - interline transfer CCDs can be"turned on" and “turned off” electronicallywith incredible precision. This is how theEOS-1D is able to shoot at shutter speedsup to 1/16,000th of a second, and moreimportant, sync with flash up to 1/500th ofa second.

Shutter Performance1/16,000-second shutter speed and1/500-second X-sync. Imagine thepossibilities. The new large-area, fourmillion pixel CCD imaging sensorelectronically times shutter speeds, andmakes possible speeds as fast as1/16,000th of a second. EX-series EOSSpeedlites can sync to an amazing 1/500thof a second. The bladed rotary-magnetshutter is durability-tested to 150,000exposures.

ResponsivenessShutter release time lag of just 55 ms. Nodigital SLR responds faster. A highlyresponsive viewfinder, courtesy of Canon'soriginal Active Mirror Control method. One of the key hurdles to faster shootingspeeds in an SLR was speed the mirrorcould move up and down, while stoppinglong enough between frames for an AFsystem to get updated information.

Active Mirror ControlThe EOS-1D like the EOS-1v incorporatesActive Mirror Control to reduce mirrorblackout - a major obstacle to ultra-high-speed continuous shooting performance.Replacing the conventional approach ofsuppressing mirror bound shock fromthe rear, the Active Mirror Controlmechanically controls the mirror. Itworks by incorporating a hook on thebackside of the main mirror. The hook isused to hold the mirror in place when itflips down, suppressing mirror “bounce,”a problem that degrades AF performanceand viewfinder clarity during continuousshooting with conventional SLRs.In other words, this ground-breakingmechanism reduces mirror shake, confining it to a short duration andsuppressing the shake immediately afterit occurs. As a result, mirror blackouttime is reduced to approximately 87ms,allowing photographers to see theirsubjects clearly through the viewfinder, even while shooting at maximum speed. And the finder image stabilizes quickly, even in continuous shooting mode, soyou always has a clear and sharpviewfinder image.

Sophisticated Exposure ControlThe EOS-1D lets you capture the light as you see it. Canon's exclusive AIM (Advanced Integrated Multi-Point control)system integrates Area AF and all six metering modes available with the EOS-1D. Focus on a subject within the AreaAF ellipse, and the EOS-1D will meter that area for the optimum result where it's needed most. All six metering modesuse the 21-zone evaluative metering sensor. Six metering modes, three flash metering modes capture your vision in allmanner of lighting situations.

21-Zone Evaluative MeteringOffers efficient coverage of the focus areaby defining the active focusing point as themain subject and setting independentmetering areas for each of 15 major focusingpoints within the Area AF ellipse. By consid-ering a range of metered values from adja-cent areas, clearly capture the subject, evenwith various brightness levels in the frame.

Center-weighted Average MeteringMeters the brightness of all zones andcalculates exposure from this reading.Metering is weighted: the farther the areais from the center, the lower the sensitivity.

Center Spot MeteringCenter spot metering mode covers only2.4% of the central image area, allowingprecise metering of a very small portion ofthe subject. Idea for achieving the correctexposure for a subject in setting withsharp contrasts in brightness.

Multi-Spot MeteringExpress personal preferences for subtledetail in both bright and dark areas whenshooting images with significant differ-ences in brightness contrast. Up to eightspot readings can be registered.

Focusing Point-Linked Spot Metering Linked spot metering not only allowsaccurate metering that is unaffected bybackground brightness plus offers a highlevel of freedom for choosing composition.

Partial Metering at CenterIn this mode approx. 8.5% of the centralimage is metered. The metering area isexceptionally well-defined, which makes iteasy to judge the ideal exposure settingbased on the brightness balance betweenthe subject and the background. Ideal forthose who want to set exposure manually.

The EOS-1D offers a range of exposure choices with seven automatic exposure modes plusmanual exposure and bulb. This gives you the freedom to shoot uniquely creative photos.

• Program AE, Manual Exposure

• Depth of-field AE— this mode lets youmanually select two focusing points forcalculating the aperture value. This valueis used for setting the depth of field at alevel that ensures sharp focusingbetween the two points. Very helpful forportrait shots using a telephoto lens.

• Shutter-speed and Aperture Priority

• Bulb—essential for shooting night views, fireworks or for astronomical photogra-phy. It offers continual exposure for aslong as the shutter button is fullydepressed. Bulb exposure lapse time canbe displayed on the large LCD pane forup to 23 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds.

◆ ISO sensitivity of 200-1600 in 1/3 incre-ments can be expanded to 100 or 3200 byCustom Function

◆ Exposure compensation in any Auto expo-sure mode ± 3 stop

◆ Automatic bracketing in any mode, evenmanual; 3 shots at up to ±3 stops

– Conventional bracketing of shutter speedand/or aperture

– Bracketing of exposure by changing ISO.This unique bracketing function lets youobtain the ideal exposure with changingthe desired motion effect or depth of field.

The Ultimate Camera For Professional Photographers The incredible quality of the EOS-1Ds starts at the imaging sensor. The 11.1-megapixel

full-frame CMOS sensor delivers a maximum resolution of 4,064 x 2,704 pixels—

almost double the resolution currently considered state-of-the-art by most

professionals. The sensor also has an imaging area of 24 x 36mm, the

same dimensions used by full-frame 35mm SLRs— so every EF-series

lens will have the same effective coverage with the EOS-1Ds as it does

with EOS-System 35mm film models. And to process the unprecedented

file sizes, the EOS-1Ds’ imaging engine incorporates an advanced

“chip” that processes and assembles image data captured by the sensor

to achieve the same color accuracy and wide tonal range as regular

film-based cameras. And even with almost twice the pixel resolution of

previous pro cameras, the imaging engine still supports a 10-frame

buffer memory at framing rates up to 3 fps!

Designed primarily for studio photographers, but ideal for a wide variety

of professional and advanced amateur photographers as well, the EOS-1DS

features an exceptionally strong magnesium alloy body, 45-point autofocus,

21-point evaluative metering, simultaneous RAW + JPEG recording, 10-mode White Balance and

5-mode Color Matrix selection. It also includes an ISO range of 100-1250 (plus ISO 50 via Custom Function control), high

speed IEEE 1394 interface and auto-switching FAT16/FAT32 memory card formatting capability, a top shutter speed of

1/8000 second, X-sync speed of 1/250 second, 21 Custom Functions (with 67 settings), 26 Personal Functions, and extended

battery life.

The ultimate imaging device for pros, the EOS-1Ds is bundled with the latest software utilities, and is supported by the

world’s largest selection of AF lenses and Canon’s sophisticated E-TTL auto flash system, including E-TTL wireless autoflash.

The numbers are staggering: 11.1 million pixels. 3 fps for up to10 consecutive frames in a burst. It’s digital like you’ve never seen before.

11.1-Megapixel CMOS Imager◆ A full-frame CMOS sensor with an imaging

area of 24 x 36mm, the same dimensionsused by full-frame 35mm SLRs. It has 11.1million effective pixels with a maximumresolution of 4,064 x 2,704 pixels. This isalmost double the resolution currentlyconsidered state-of-the-art by most pro-fessionals.

◆ The EOS 10D showed the world howCanon-developed CMOS imaging sensorscombine superb color, dynamic range, and low noise. Now, the EOS-1Ds almostdoubles the D10’s resolution for a quan-tum leap in digital image quality. With thesame Canon CMOS benefits.

1:1 Focal Length & 3fps Shooting◆ Finally, every EF lens will work the same

on a digital SLR as it does on your 35mmfilm cameras, with the same coverage. It’sone less thing for the pro to think abouton location, and it’s one more thing toease the transition from film into digital.Even for wide-angle shooters.

◆ Today’s digital pros demand speed andresponsiveness along with high quality,so Canon has developed new 2-channelreading to ensure that the EOS-1Ds deliv-ers both. It doubles the reading speedand turns the dream of combiningincredible 11.1 million pixel resolutionwith 3 fps shooting speeds into a reality.

ReducedPower Consumption

◆ Battery longevity is an importantconsideration, particularly when shootingoutdoors. Fortunately, CMOS sensorsconsume less power than CCD sensors ofthe same resolution. Moreover, theEOS-1D’s electronic circuits ensure thatelectricity flows only to activecomponents, in the absolute minimumrequired amounts. Thanks to the EOS-1D’sefficiency, the NPE3 battery pack lasts upto 600 exposures (at normal temperatures)on a single charge.

Canon Imaging Engine◆ The EOS-1D’s imaging engine is one of

the keys to its exceptional image quality. This advanced “chip” processes andassembles image data captured by thesensor to achieve the same color accu-racy and wide tonal range as regularfilm-based cameras. And even withalmost twice the pixel resolution of pre-vious pro cameras, the imaging enginestill supports a 10-frame buffer memoryat framing rates up to 3 fps!

◆ The EOS-1Ds reduces noise throughvarious refinements. Dark currentcountermeasures and noise reductionprocessing in the imaging engine, forexample, contribute to an extremelyhigh S/N ratio, and an extremely lowlevel of noise in the EOS-1D’s images.

Advanced Color Control◆ Offers an incredible array of white

balance options, including a Canonexclusive – manual adjustment of colortemperature in 100K increments from2,800K~10,000K –and even a whitebalance bracketing function

◆ The EOS-1Ds provides flexibility beyondthe expected. Shooting in high or lowcontrast conditions? Add a parameterset with an adjusted Tone Curve*, andcall it up on the menu whenever youwant. Similar changes can be made tothe amount of JPEG compression, andtwo types of in-camera sharpening.

* Tone curve settings must be customizedand uploaded via computer.

◆ Canon’s unique Color Matrix functionlets you select any of five different colorcharacteristics. The Color Matrix 4 set-ting, for example, is optimized for AdobeRGB 1998 and provides a broad colourspectrum with low saturation.

◆ Any speed in the normal 100 to 1250 ISOrange can be selected in 1/3-stop incre-ments. When specialized needs arise, aCustom Function allows you to choosean ISO setting of 50. ISO speed bracket-ing is also possible (±3 stops in 1/3-stopincrements), enabling exposure to bevaried while keeping the same shutterspeed and aperture settings.

◆ In addition to 21-zone evaluativemetering, offers a choice of center-weighted, central partial, central spot, focusing point-linked spot metering orCanon’s unique Multi- Spot Metering –the EOS-1Ds can automatically averageup to eight separate spot meter.

◆ Employs the same durable, high-speed,high-precision mechanical shutter usedin the EOS-1v. Shutter speed can beselected between 1/8000 and 30 secondsin 1/3-stop increments, with X-sync up to1/250 sec. And with a shutter release timelag of 55ms and viewfinder blackout timeof only 87ms, operation feels identical tothe world’s fastest 35mm SLR, the EOS-1v.

◆ IEEE1394 Firewire interface allows speedyplug and-play data communication withcomputers. For studio photography, 20-ft.cables are available. The camera auto-matically formats the CF card for eitherFAT16 or FAT32 according to the maxi-mum storage capacity. FAT32 is selectedfor capacities higher than 2GB.

◆ Lightweight yet durable, with a chassisand external covers made of magnesiumalloy, the EOS-1Ds is thoroughly sealedand protected from water and dust. Itsrugged design meets the demands of themost hostile environments.

◆ High-definition 2˝ LCD monitor displaysshooting and image data, a histogramand highlighted alerts. An enlargementmode available via Personal Functionallows you to check the focus moreclosely by selecting and enlarging one of25 sections of the image.

◆ RAW and JPEG image recording for quali-ty and convenience. RAW format is idealfor printing and processing, while JPEGformat is convenient for quickly checkingimages and transferring data. With theEOS-1Ds you can record every shot inboth of these formats simultaneously, atfull speed, for maximum productivity.

◆ File View Utility enables “development” ofRAW images, viewing of images, andcustomization of camera settings right inthe camera. This dramatically simplifiesoperation and accelerates imageprocessing. Also handles remote controlof the camera, layout printing and editing.

◆ The optional DVK-E1 Data Verification Kitconsisting of a dedicated IC card andcard reader and special Windows2000/XP software is available to verifythat EOS-1Ds image files are absolutelyunaltered. This makes it the first digitalSLR that can prove its images areunaltered, original files.

Wireless Flash PhotographyMultiple Speedlites can achieve lighting effects not possible with a singleSpeedlite. And now multiple lights can be set up without cumbersome wires toconnect. Wireless flash works with the on-camera Speedlite serving as themaster, transmitting wireless signals to two or more 550 EX and 420EX Speedlitesas slave units. The master unit’s flash can also be enabled or disabled. Evenwhen disabled, the flash head can still transmit wireless optical signals.

E-TTL Wireless Autoflash ControlUp to three groups (for main, fill, and background flash) of slave units can be set up.The slave unit’s ID is set to A, B, or C. The flash output ratio between two Speedlitegroups can be adjusted automatically from 8:1 to 1:1 or from 1:1 to 1:8. The flash outputof the third Speedlite group can be adjusted through flash exposure compensation.

The E-TTL autoflash system controls the total flash output to obtain a correctexposure. When using the 550EX with the EOS D60 you can fire a modeling flash topreview the flash effects before taking the picture. Even with multiple Speedlites, the modeling flash fires according to the flash ratio you have set.

E-TTL Wireless autoflash can also be used with most other features such as FE Lock,FP Flash, Flash Exposure Bracketing and Compensation, and Stroboscopic flash.

EF lenses fuse state-of-the-art electronics

with mechanical precision, and optical

excellence. The fully electronic EF lens

mount is unique among 35mm SLR cam-

eras, operating silently with unmatched

reliability due to the complete elimina-

tion of mechanical couplings. Every EF

lens contains its own custom-designed

autofocus motor and microprocessor.

Many utilize Canon's exclusive Ultrasonic Motor (USM) technology. Canon is also a leader in the use of aspherical lens ele-

ments, flourite crystal, Ultra-low dispersion (UD) glass and other advanced optical technologies. Uniformly high optical per-

formance results from the extensive use of exclusive Canon-developed manufacturing techniques in Canon’s own factories, the

world's largest for 35mm cameras and lenses.

Ultrasonic Motors (USM)The Ultrasonic Motor (USM) in Canon EF lenses is based on uniquetechnology—the motor spins by ultrasonic oscillation energy. Fastand quiet, USM has made EF lenses almost noiseless and autofocus-ing fast, precise and practical. The direct-drive construction is verysimple, with no gear train. This makes it very durable and efficient. Two types of USM are used: Ring-type and micro. Ring-type is foundin large-aperture and super telephoto lenses, while micro USM canbe found in more compact lenses.

Inner and Rear FocusingAn inner focusing lens has the focusing lens group(s) in front of thediaphragm, while a rear focusing lens has the focusing lensgroup(s) behind. Both systems allow the focusing lens group to besmall. This minimizes the load on the actuator which drives theautofocus. In turn, the AF speed is faster. The whole optical systemcan also be made more compact. And, since the lens doesn’t rotateduring focusing, the effects of a circular polarizer or gel filterremain intact.

Floating SystemOrdinary lenses (non-zoom) are designed to give the best resultswhen the correction of aberrations is most effective. This is usuallyat the most commonly-used focusing distances. At other focusingdistances especially at the closest focusing distance, aberrationstend to appear. Canon’s floating system suppresses aberrations atclose focusing distances. The system adjusts the gap betweencertain lens elements in correspondence to the focusing distance, effectively correcting the aberration. The result is high image quali-ty with aberrations suppressed at all focusing distances.

Fully Electronic Mount SystemThe conventional interface between lens and camera is mechanicalis limited and doesn’t allow much information to be exchanged. EFlenses don’t use any mechanical links. Instead, about 50 items ofinformation are exchanged as digital signals between the lens andcamera in real time. This enables high-speed and precision control.

Built-In Motor and EMDEF lenses have a built-in AF motor, as opposed to camera body-based AF motors, for driving energy with lower transmission loss. The lenses also have an EMD (Electromagnetic Diaphragm) toelectronically control the aperture with unmatched precision. Theaperture can be set either with an electronic dial or with theelectronic pulse signal sent according to the exposure reading.

Full-Time Manual FocusingCanon EF lenses have very high AF precision. Optimum focus canbe achieved quickly in almost any shooting situation. Most Elenses are also equipped with Canon’s full-time manual focusing

mode to make picture-taking even more flexible. Lenses with thisfeature allow you to switch to manual focusing even in the AFmode—overriding the autofocus mode. You can keep lookingthrough the viewfinder and touch up the focus manually withoutswitching the focus mode switch. And since the focusing ringdoesn’t rotate during auto focusing, Canon made it wider for easiermanual focusing. Full time manual focusing comes in two types:Electronic manual focusing where the rotation amount of the focus-ing ring is detected and the focusing motor is driven electronically.Or, mechanical focusing, where the rotation of the focusing ringadjusts the focus mechanically.

Whenever you have an image in mind, you must choose a lens which can put that image on film. And whatever that imagemay be, you can be sure that Canon has the lens you need. Whether it is a 15mm fisheye or a 1200mm super telephoto, allCanon lenses feature the finest materials (especially the L-series lenses) and technologies. They include fluorite, UD glass, aspherical lenses, lens-based Ultrasonic Motors, inner and rear focusing, Image Stabilizers, and a fully-electronic interface.

Standard Lenses

With a natural angle of view and perspective, standard lenses capture the subject plainly, with no spe-cial effects. The result is different from a wide-angle of telephoto lens which is used for more expressivepurposes. At the same time however, you can use standard lenses in creative ways by varying the sub-ject distance, aperture, and angle. Canon offers three standard EF lenses each with a different maxi-mum aperture.

Portrait and Medium Telephoto Lenses

A medium telephoto lens with a large aperture brings the subject closer, creates excellent backgroundblur, gives a longer flash range, and affords a faster shutter speed to freeze the action. Best of all, theyaren’t too heavy to carry around—even on a ski slope.

Telephoto Lenses

A telephoto lens is essential to any serious photographer. For sports action, you will need a fast shutterspeed and a long focal length. A large maximum aperture allows a faster shutter speed. If you want asmaller more compact lens, choose a lens with a smaller maximum aperture.

• All except the 300/4L and 400/5.6L feature a fluorite lenselement to correct chromatic aberrations. Fluorite hasabnormally low refraction and low dispersion characteristicswhich optical glass can’t achieve.

• In addition to fluorite, they each incorporate two UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) glass elements whose properties nearlymatch those of fluorite (the effect of two UD-glass elements isequivalent to one fluorite). The 400/5.6L has a Super UD-glasselement which gives almost the same effect as one fluoriteelement.

• All except the 300/4L and 400/5.6L have an ‘AF Stop’ feature. Ifsomething passes between the camera and subject, the AF-Stopbutton momentarily locks the AF to prevent the focus fromshifting to the obstruction passing by. After it is gone, thefocus is maintained so you can quickly resume shooting.

• All except the 300/4L and 400/5.6L feature Focus Preset(FP). With FP you can set the desired focusing distance inmemory and later instantly focus at that distance. Normalshooting and focusing is possible while FP has been set.

• All except the 300/4L and 400/5.6L are highly resistant todust and water. Their switch panel, exterior seams, anddrop-in filter compartments have rubber linings.

• All (except 400/5.6L) have a built-in Image Stabilizer becauseno matter how great the lens is, camera shake can spoil theshot. Optical shake is detected by gyro sensors which pro-vide the data necessary to shift the image-stabilizing lensgroup in parallel to neutralize the shake. This increasesusable shutter speed range by up to two full stops for hand-held shooting. There are two IS modes: one for normalimage stabilization, one for panned shots.

EQUIPMENT LEASING AVAILABLEPHOTO - VIDEO - PRO AUDIO

The small things we see and ignore everyday can actually reveal much surprise and fasci-

nation up close. A world all their own. Canon’s macro lenses—three autofocus and one

manual focus – are the most effective and versatile way to discover this world.

EF 50mm f/2.5 Macro (CA5025MEF)

Floating system for superior delineation at all focusing distances (1:1 reproduction ratio with optionalLife Size Converter EF). With a large f/2.5 aperture, true and beautiful background blur is possible. Amulti-purpose lens for portraiture and other applications besides macro photography .................239.95

EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM (CA10028MEFQ)

The EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro is an autofocus lens designed for macro photography up to life-size(1:1 reproduction ratio) magnification. It is also the first lens in its class to feature inner focus-ing - lens length never changes, even at life size. 3-group floating system provides exceptionalclose-up performance and results in excellent delineation at all focusing distances. Ring typeUSM provides fast and silent AF throughout its focus range, and even more significantly, allowsfull-time manual focusing – permitting the close-up or macro shooter to instantly override theAF whenever necessary. Connects directly to the ML-3 and MR-14EX Macro Ring Lites .......469.95

EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM (CA18035MLEF)

With a maximum magnification of 1x, the EF 180mm f/3.5L can shoot life-size close-ups from afarther distance without disturbing the subject. Internal floating system with three UD-glass ele-ments minimize fluctuations in aberrations caused by changes in the focusing distance – delin-eation is razor-sharp from 1x to infinity. Operability is further enhanced through a wide manualfocus ring. Another advantage of this lens is its internal focusing, so lens length doesn’t changeand the front element doesn’t rotate. Filter size is 58mm ........................................................1239.95

MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo (CA6528MP)

While not an EF lens, the manual focusing MP-E 65mm f/2.8 is the first macro photo lensdesigned to achieve a high magnification greater than 1x (1:1 reproduction ratio) without anyadditional accessories. Ideal for shooting small objects, the lens’ newly-designed optical formula and UD-glass elements suppress chromatic aberrations which become apparent at highmagnifications. For flash photography, the the ML-3 or MR-14EX Macro Ring Lite can beattached to the lens. Filter size is 58mm .......................................................................................809.95

Extender EF 1.4x & Extender EF 2xThese high performance lens extenders increase the focal length of telephoto lenses by 1.4 times (EF1.4x) or 2 times (EF 2x). They can be used with a 135mm or linger fixed-length lens, or with the EF 70-210/2.8L, 70-210/4L and the EF 100-400L. Attaching the 1.4x decreases the f-stop by one stop, attachingthe 2x by two stops. With the 1.4x, autofocus is possible with an f/4 maximum aperture or better. Withthe 2x, autofocus is possible with an f/2.8 or better. The lenses are weather-resistant on the front andrear mount surfaces to match the level provided by the IS super-telephoto lenses. They also offer inter-nal anti-reflection construction that improves contrast even when shooting in heavy backlit conditions. 6.1-Megapixel (12.1 MP Interpolated)Digital SLR CameraThe successor to the acclaimed FinePix S1 Pro, the FinePix S2 Pro, builds on

its predecessor's legacy for outstanding picture color and detail while empow-

ering professional photographers with greater control over the editing, storing

and transferring of images, both in the studio and on the road.

The FinePix S2 Pro’s 6.17 million effective pixels is capable of producing an

image file with 12.1 million (4,256 x 2,848) recorded pixels for pictures with

stunning color and detail. Additionally, CCD RAW mode, allows professionals

to experiment with their photographs as they see fit.

The FinePix S2 Pro offers a dual media storage options: Smartmedia and IBM

Microdrive as well as IEEE1394 and USB interface to speed the transfer of large files to a Mac or PC—resulting in increased

workflow. A Nikon SLR-type design, the S2 Pro has a Nikon-F mount and accepts every AF Nikkor and most manual AI, AI-S

Nikkor lenses. It has a high-speed shutter (30 to 1/4000 second), continuous shooting (2 fps up to seven frames), and sensi-

tivity up to ISO-equivalent 800 and 1600. For further flexibility, controls include four shooting modes (single frame, continu-

ous, preview and multiple exposure), four exposure modes and nine white balance modes.

3rd-Generation Super CCD—The Heart of the FinePix S2 Pro

Since gaps are wider on theperpendicular axes,a conventional

CCD suffers fromhorizontal/vertical resolution

that is lower than the resolution on the diagonals.

The Super CCD has narrowerintervals on the perpendicular axes,so vertical/horizontal resolution ishigher than diagonal resolution.

Higher Sensitivity, S/N Ratio, Dynamic RangeWith octagonal photodiodes in a honeycombpattern, the Super CCD minimizes space thatdoesn’t contribute to image capture, solight-collecting efficiency is much higher. Thisimproves sensitivity, increases the S/N ratioand broadens the dynamic range.

Higher horizontal/vertical resolutionBased on extensive research into humanvision, the Super CCD layout positions thepixels at a 45° angle in a honeycomb pattern. This raises horizontal/vertical resolution up to60% higher than conventional CCDs.

The FinePix S2 Pro owes its exceptional imaging performance to the newly-developed 3rd-Generation Super CCD sensor. With 6.17-million pixels delivering an unprecedented 4256 x 2848(12.1-million) recording pixels, the FinePix S2 Pro offers twice the image size of its predecessor(FinePix S1 Pro) and far more recording pixels than any other SLR digital camera available today. This two-fold improvement in resolution is only part of the story though. The Super CCD’s newsensor technology, together with a state-of-the-art image-processing algorithm LSI, reduces noisein both the luminance an chroma information in captured images. Apart from notably cleanerimages, this makes possible an expanded range of ISO sensitivities for maximum shooting versa-tility. The same technology, in combination with the RAW format, also extends tonal range andimproves color balance. Skin tones particularly benefit, and surface textures take on a tactile,three-dimensional reality. In short, image quality rivals that of film-based photography.

Horizontal Skipped ReadoutNo longer limited to the vertical axis, skipped readout is possible in both direc-tions— a key to high-quality, full-motionvideo output.

Single Electronic ShutterSince it needs only an electronic shutter, theSuper CCD holds the potential for continu-ous shooting that’s extremely fast and pre-cise. The key lies in one-step reading of allthe pixels and a path structure wide enoughfor high-speed transmission of the electroniccharge produced by the photodiodes.

KODAKDCS PRO 14N

14-Megapixel Full-Frame SLR for Portrait, Wedding, Event andCommercial PhotographersKodak's sixth-generation professional digital camera, the easy-to-use DCS Pro

14n digital SLR is designed and priced for professional portrait, wedding,

event and commercial photographers, as well as advanced amateurs.

Built on a Nikon lens mount, the camera is equipped with a 4536 x 3024

(13.7MP) effective pixel, 12-bit CMOS imager, covering the full 24x

36mm image area of 35mm film, allowing you to regain the benefits of

true wide-angle lenses and use of Nikon 35mm SLR lenses. Plus, you

have the freedom to select the image size (full 14MP, 6MP, and 3MP)

that suits the shooting environment.

Powered by a single rechargeable Li-Ion battery pack, the camera can

capture 2fps up to eight frames in full-resolution mode. Images can be

saved as DCR raw files or Kodak Extended Range Imaging (ERI) JPEG

files. Images are stored on CompactFlash and/or SD/MMC memory cards.

The camera can write to both, and the image can be sent to each card simultaneously in any of the available formats. The

camera has two user modes: basic and advanced. The camera defaults to the basic setting and offers a very intuitive, sim-

ple interface. In the advanced mode, you can adjust many more capture, resolution and storage settings, among others. In

addition, Kodak leverages Nikon's D-TTL (digital through the lens) flash metering in the DCS Pro 14n to offer near perfect

flash exposures.

The DCS Pro 14n uses cast magnesium encasements for a solid, rugged camera body. The robust body includes a vertical

trigger that works in conjunction with an auto orientation sensor. The sensor detects the camera's orientation ±90° from the

horizontal position. This enables automatic rotation of the image as it moves to a computer for manipulation, saving time

and improving workflow.

Finally, it includes the latest versions of Kodak Professional DCS Photo Desk and Camera Manager software, and is compati-

FEATURES

PHOTO - VIDEO - PRO AUDIO

◆ The highest resolution image sensor in a 35mm SLR camera, theDCS Pro 14n’s massive CMOS image sensor is packed with 13.85-million (4560 x 3048) total pixels to deliver incredibly detailedimages up to 41 MB (uncompressed TIFF). And since resolution isso high there is no need for an anti-aliasing filter.

◆ Unlike CCD image sensors which are charge-coupled devices thatrequire very sophisticated and power-hungry electronics to oper-ate, and due to the amount of support electronics they require, take up more space and power inside the camera—CMOS imagesensors incorporate light-sensing technology that allows forcharge conversion right inside the pixel, thereby dramaticallyreducing support electronics and power consumption. The smallsize of the DCS Pro 14n, even though it incorporates a 24 x 36mmsensor, was achieved through the use of CMOS sensor technology.

14-Megapixel Full-Frame 35mm-size CMOS Sensor ◆ The 24mm x 36mm full-frame CMOS image sensor is also equal

in size to 35mm film. This gives the DCS Pro 14n a 1:1 focallength magnification—so there is no focal length magnificationeffect like you get with other digital SLR camera. You get thesame true wide-angle and telephoto image as you would withfilm. Other advantages of this include a larger viewfinder area, metering system with less error and increased focusing precision.

◆ The DCS Pro 14n lets you save an image at 14, 6, or 3 megapixels. This allows you to control file size based on the requirementsof a given shot or situation. It also speeds workflow by allowingfor capture at lower resolution. Use 3- or 6-megapixels whenyou want to balance speed in your workflow; use 14-megapixelswhen you want to blow wide open the doors of artisticpossibility.

The Kodak Advantage—‘Picture Protection’No photographer is perfect. At one time or another we’ve all incorrectly exposed a picture, accidentally deleted an image, or ended up with the wrong color balance. Equipped withKodak’s Picture Protection the DCS Pro 14n offers you several functions that let you“rescue” images that might otherwise be lost. And you do it without losing data as youwould during adjustments made in Photoshop on an acquired image.

The DCS Pro 14n does this by creating and managing Kodak's innovative Extended RangeImaging (ERI) JPEG files. ERI-JPEGs are created by and stored in-camera on removablemedia for later color correction or manipulation, and provide two-stops of exposurelatitude and extended color space within a JPEG workflow, a benefit no other cameraoffers. The ERI-JPEG format provides professional photographers ease-of-use of JPEG fileswith the image quality and color/exposure control of Kodak’s highly regarded DCR formatraw camera files, to create the best quality images.

Exposure Compensation: If you’re using another camera, you’re image is final, whether itis under-or overexposed. You could open it in Photoshop and make some adjustments, butyou'd never really fix it. That's not the case here. What determines your scenes exposure?Four factors: light, shutter, aperture, and sensitivity. The first three are fixed in time: youcan’t change them. To adjust the exposure, your only hope is to change the sensitivity. TheDCS Pro 14n can capture the raw data of your image, and create a digital negative allowingyou to go back and correct the exposure of the shot after it’s taken.

Color Correction: Quickly moving from one lighting condition to another? Accidentallyhave your camera set for the wrong color temperature? Normally all you can get is apicture with severe color-cast, requiring a lot of retouching time to recover the correctcolors. But now you can change the color settings after you have taken your shot, puttingyou into control of image conditions. Choose from calibrated daylight, tungsten, fluorescent, or flash color settings - each with the ability to set a custom white point—tocorrect the color before acquisition. Or for critical control of color, the cameras are ICCprofile compliant—you can convert from the camera’s raw data to a known, calibratingcolor space of your choosing.

Digital Negatives: Some cameras process process the data and turn it into finished filesimmediately. That may be fine for some shots, but it doesn't offer the flexibility that mostprofessional photographers need. The DCS Pro 14n save the raw data from the sensor as a“digital negative”, giving you access to that raw information. Since you have the raw data, you can process this archive as many times as you need to. You can change exposuresettings, color balance, and more—all without changing the raw data. It’s like shootingmultiple rolls of film.

Professional Conveniences◆ Connect the camera directly to NMEA

standard Global Positioning Satellitedevices. These GPS units can beattached to your file headers to capturecoordinates with each image. There aretwo options for doing this:

– You can put a Trimble GPS card into oneof the slots in the camera.

– You can plug an external GPS unit intothe serial port of the camera.

◆ With the second option, once the GPSdevice is attached, you just take yourpictures. The GPS coordinates are auto-matically collected and stored in the fileheader, just like the ISO setting, shutterspeed, date, and time. When they'reprocessed through the acquire module, the GPS coordinates are automaticallywritten to the top 16 pixels of the file.

◆ The body includes a vertical trigger thatworks in conjunction with the camera’sauto orientation sensor.

◆ The sensor detects the camera’s orienta-tion ±90° from the horizontal position. This enables automatic rotation of theimage as it moves to a computer formanipulation, saving you time andimproving workflow.

◆ Selectable NTSC/PAL video output forreview. In NTSC mode, the color LCDand the video output are enabled simul-taneously, a feature particularly usefulfor portrait photographers preparingset-ups. Using a TV/monitor, photogra-phers can “play back” images capturedduring a shoot as a preview and poten-tial sales opportunity with customers.

Optional DCS Custom Looks Software The DCS Custom Looks software profiles mimic the looks of films and filters to meetyour artistic needs and to simplify your workflow. In minutes, you can haverepeatable, predictable color that could take you hours to create in other softwareprograms - if you could do it at all. In the “Color Hold” profiles, skin colors are “held”in place while other colors are affected. This effect could take hours to produce; inCustom Looks, it's as easy as a click away.

Starting with a Kodak DCR file as your master image, you can create the same effectsas several films - black and white, high-contrast color, low-contrast color, plus theeffects of filters. Using these new profiles, you can offer your clients more color tonaloptions, particularly when they are trying to match merchandise or flesh tones. Bysetting an option during the capture stage, you don't have to apply different coloreffects later in your workflow to meet their expectations. With the selection ofprofiles, you can sell the same image multiple times.

DCS Photo Desk (Included)DCS Photo Desk is a powerful applicationfor image browsing, management andenhancement. The software converts RAW .DCRfiles into finished JPEGs or TIFFs and effectivelycontrols the color and brightness adjustmentsmade during that processing. It also lets youbrowse multiple folders and images with dragand drop file management. Easy-to-use interfaceprovides a range of image processing options.

DCS Camera Manager (Included)DCS Camera Manager is a digital image workflow software that enables computer control ofthe DCS Pro 14n via it’s IEEE-1394 interface, greatly expanding studio applications. With DCSCamera Manager, photographers can control camera settings from a computer, trigger thecamera, quickly copy images from the camera to the computer, and send images directly tothe computer where they can be transmitted to other locations.

• Open multiple images in windows with variableview scaling from 10 to 200%.

• Control cropping, rotation, balance, lighting, exposure compensation, sharpening and noise

• Save DCS image files as JPEG and TIFF files, withoptional naming and sequence numbering

• Optionally imprint GPS information into imagessaved in standard TIFF format.

• Open converted files in any application

• Quickly review and tag high-resolution images

When creating JPEG files, you can add information such as captions, photo credits, copy-rights, dates, etc. Usually, this data is entered in Photoshop—but now you can add theinformation in archive files right in the acquire module. The information then appearsautomatically with each shot that uses the files.

That means you can upload fields into your DCS camera before a shoot. It then automati-cally enters your pre-assigned information on every shot you take. That makes you moreproductive, since you’re spending time shooting instead of annotating!

◆ Use the computer to properties accessi-ble via the camera's menu. These includeadjusting the clock, setting the aperture, designating a personalized start-upscreen with contact information andmany other functions. It also allowsremote camera triggering for a more nim-ble set-up and greater efficiency in studioapplications.

location and portrait applications. A single-shot unit designed to afford

photographers as much freedom as possible, the DCS Pro Back Plus creates

large, versatile 96 MB image files while operating tethered or untethered,

making it ideal for advertising and catalog photographers, table-top studios,

and in-house and independent portrait studios.

Complementing the Pro Back Plus is Kodak’s DCS Capture Studio Software, a powerful stand-alone application for capturing

and editing digital images. Robust, but easy-to-use, the software delivers exceptional workflow and optimized image quality,

using an open systems approach to color management that maintains the integrity of captured images for virtually all

monitors and printers, computer platforms and imaging applications. Compatible with Hasselblad, Mamiya RZ67, Fuji GX680

and Bronica film cameras (some cameras require Kodak cable assembly or Kapture Group shutter release).

16-Megapixel Sensor◆ Designed for advertising and catalog

photography the Pro Back Plus’ full-frame CCD delivers more than twice theresolution of any single-shot, medium-format digital back currently available. The 16-megapixel 4080 x 4080 ITO sensor—measuring 36.86mm by 36.86mm —producing 96 MB files with very lownoise.

◆ Print big, bold and beautiful prints up to40 x 40 inches, or larger — you’ll beamazed how the resolution holds!

◆ Kodak developed, the 16- megapixel provides improved blue response,anti-blooming, and color uniformity

◆ A removable anti-aliasing filter, digitalanti-aliasing solutions and a non-reflecting IR cut-off filter help ensure thehighest image quality.

◆ The physical size of the CCD is smallerthan a frame of 120 film and so a resultinglens multiplication factor of about 1.5xwill occur (shooting with a 90mm medi-um format lens with the Kodak DCS ProBack Plus would capture the same areaas using a 135mm lens with a 120 filmback).

Portability ◆ The DCS Pro Back captures images at the

equivalent of ISO 100. It can capture anone image every two seconds, and up tofour images are buffered before they aredownloaded to a CF card. With two 1GBIBM Microdrives, you will be able tostore 100 high-resolution images.

◆ When you’re tethered with an IEEE1394cable, your images are saved directly tothe hard drive of your host computer orto the CF card.

Kodak DCS Camera Manager DCS Camera Manager software makes it possible to control DCS camera settingsfrom a computer (via IEEE1394), trigger the camera and copy images from thecamera to the computer or capture them directly to the hard drive. (Images saveddirectly to the hard drive, rather than the camera’s removable storage are betterfor direct wireless transmission.) The software also allows you to set anythingaccessible through the camera’s menus.

Additional Features◆ Kodak has a removable IR filter, located

in front of the CCD, that rejects stronginfrared light while it protects yourimage from color errors andde-saturation without losing ISO speed.Additionally, the IR filter protectsthe CCD cover glass from scratchesand damage.

◆ For certain types of photography, suchas portraiture, you can mount theoptional anti-aliasing filter in place ofthe IR filter. The anti-aliasing filter dra-matically reduces scene aliasing andmoire. The anti-aliasing filter also has IRreflection layers, so an additional IRfilter is not needed.
