SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 30
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Person located unattended dog runningthrough Mission Trail park and brought it to Carmel P.D. Doglodged in kennel pending notification of the owner.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Necklace found on San Carlos Street. Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambulance, assisted by
Monterey Fire, Pacific Grove Fire and state parks lifeguards,responded to a coastal incident on Carmel Beach. A broken surf-board was seen floating in the surf, and a search was conducted,but no victims were found in the water. The surfboard wasretrieved.
Big Sur: At 1115 hours, the Monterey County Sheriff’sOffice Search and Rescue team was paged to help rescue a 41-year-old female paraglider who crashed into a tree shortly aftertakeoff, fracturing her pelvis. The launching site was situated ona ridge which is about 3,000 feet above sea level in Los PadresNational Forest. MCSO helicopter responded from the SalinasAirport to the Monterey Airport to pick up three members of theSAR team. They landed by helicopter above the victim while aCALSTAR helicopter (air ambulance) landed below the victim.Three members of the SAR team made their way to the victimto assist rescuers from the U.S. Forest Service and Big SurVolunteer Fire Brigade. They placed the victim in a Stokes litterand carried her down to the CALSTAR helicopter, which flewher to the hospital.

‘SHOULD I buy or rent?” With decreasing home pricesin most parts of the country, this is a question that is no doubtrunning through the minds of many. The decision to rent anapartment, condo or house as opposed to buying is complexand worth some analysis.
There are many misconceptions when weighing theoptions to rent or buy. One of the biggest may be the notionthat renting is simpler. When the refrigerator in a rental needsrepair, the responsibility falls on the landlord. But once newhomeowners sign their name on the dotted line, the responsi-bility is theirs.Unfortunately, stating thatrenting is the “simpler”choice takes a narrow viewon the total set of issues thatgo into the buy-versus-rentdecision. Here are a fewother possible misconcep-tions:
■ The tax benefitsderived from purchasing ahome take too long to off-set all the other costsinvolved. You likely knowthat the tax write-offs ofmortgage interest are amongthe biggest financial benefitsof home ownership. Butsome question whether thisbenefit is really greatenough to offset the “big pic-ture” cost of ownership.Homes typically appreciatein value over time. That’swhy you should carefullyevaluate how long youexpect to stay in your newhome. If you anticipate stay-ing for several years, thescales should tip in yourfavor and the value of all thatyou will gain financially
from homeownership is likely to outweigh those initial coststo get in the door.
■ Renting a home isn’t all that different from owning.If you are renting a house, you may already feel like a home-owner by making routine repairs, gardening or cleaning thegutters. But there is one fundamental difference. Unlike equi-ty built with each monthly mortgage payment, the rent youare paying is producing zero future financial benefit. In fact,you are essentially paying the landlord’s mortgage and likelyadditional utility costs. Since most homes increase in valueover the long term, a home not only provides a place to livebut will ultimately provide return on your original invest-ment.
■ It’s better to rent and wait for the market to bottomout. By the time we will recognize the true bottom of themarket, prices will already be on their way up. Buying ahome should always be approached as a good long-terminvestment, providing equity accumulation, cost appreciationand tax benefits over time. Carmel-by-the-Sea: Victim on DoloresStreet reported that she had parked her car inher driveway on Nov. 29 and left for the week-end. On Dec. 1, she got into her car and noticedthat someone had thrown black paint on her car.The victim spent most of the day getting thepaint off of the car. She reported that this typeof vandalism has happened to her before andfelt that the same subject may be responsiblefor this incident. She added that she had con-tacted a possible suspect in a theft from her
vehicle about a year ago. She later found outthat this subject did not steal anything from hercar. The victim felt that it was possible that thissubject might hold ill will against her. Officeradvised her that a close patrol would be placedin her area.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Subject came into thestation to report her daughter missing.Daughter is suspected to be a runaway.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Subject reported see-ing a mountain lion on the playground area ofJunipero Serra School at 2139 hours. Themountain lion moved away from the personabout 30 feet and then crouched down andstared at him. The person raised his arms andmade noise, causing the mountain lion to walkaway out of the playground area. Area checkedby officers. Unable to locate lion.
