AMSS Council Meeting Minutes Pam Paxton called the meeting to order, welcomed all newly-elected officers, and thanked outgoing council members. Pam Paxton reported on membership, distributing the new flyer to council members to place in relevant sessions. Jan Stets presented a report as chair of the nominations committee which consisted of Kraig Beyerlein (University of Notre Dame), Philip Gorski (Yale), Elisa Bienenstock (Arizona State University), Chelsea Kelly (University of Georgia). Elections went smoothly and the election slate was strong. Shai Dromi could not attend the meeting so Sam Stabler presented a report on the newsletter, website and other media presence. The website has been consistently updated and our twitter account is active.

Jane Sell gave the budget report. The section’s finances are stable. By pairing our reception with the Theory Section, we spent only about $800 on our reception. Additional expenses included award plaques. The Student Affairs Activities committee has been busy this past year and reported on the latest webinar, with Steve Hitlin. Over twenty people attended the webinar in real time and the entire recording is available on the website. The council meeting ended with Pam Paxton thanking everyone for their great work this past year. A special thanks was extended to the two-year service of outgoing council members and student members, and the incredible service of our representative on publications. A final thank you to Jane Sell for her service as secretary/treasurer and the meeting adjourned. Attendees:

The Previous Year Describe section activities during the period between September 2017 and August 2018.

• Membership recruitment and retention – What efforts did the section make to retain members and reach out to new members? What were the results of the efforts?

The AMSS membership declined slightly over the past year. It was 228 at the ASA meetings this year. Last year at this time it was 243. Membership Chair Vincent Jeffries and the other committee members tried to obtain new members. There were several emails to the member’s listserv with suggestions for recruiting. We continued the practice of subsidizing new graduate student members with a fund of private donations. We also created a flyer advertising the section and placed it around relevant ASA events.

• Communications – How does the section communicate with its members? Did it begin using any new technologies or strategies? If so, were they effective? Include links to the section website, newsletters, and any other electronic media used.

We have a very strong Publications Committee that keeps the membership informed of relevant activities, resources, and news. Shai Dromi continued to edit our newsletter series, which is distributed electronically upon publication and archived here: https://sites.google.com/site/altruismmoralitysolidarity/newsletter-archive Shai Dromi continued his outstanding efforts to increase interest and awareness of AMSS section activities through the section website, blog entries, and frequent communications on social media. • Mentoring – What, if any, mentoring opportunities does the section offer to students, early career faculty, nonfaculty, etc.? We have a paired faculty/graduate student mentoring program. It was rarely used in the last year, however. We also have an active webinar series.

Page 8: Section Annual Report for Altruism, Morality, and Social ......report on the newsletter, website and other media presence as well as the success of the graduate student webinar series

• Programming – Provide an overview of the section’s programming at the annual meeting, scholarly/ professional development activities outside of the annual meeting, development of substantive resources, partnerships with other sections or groups, etc.

Plans for the Coming Year

Describe section plans for the period between September 2018 and August 2019. These plans should align with the 2018 budget and proposed 2019 budget below.

• Membership recruitment and retention – What efforts will the section make to retain members and reach out to new members? What are the goals of the efforts? Click here to enter text.

• Communications – How does the section plan to communicate with its members? Does the section plan on using any new technologies or strategies? If so, how? No change

• Mentoring – What efforts will the section make to mentor students, early career faculty, nonfaculty, etc.? Continuing the paired faculty/graduate student mentoring program and the webinar series.

• Programming – Provide an overview of the section’s upcoming plans for programming at the annual meeting, scholarly/ professional development activities outside of the annual meeting, development of substantive resources, partnerships with other sections or groups, etc.

At ASA 2019 we will have 2 sessions. Our current plan for the sessions is: 1. An open submission paper session. 2. An invited session that will be adjacent to our Business meeting. 3. We may also partner with the section on Political Sociology on a session related to ethics, morality, and corruption in politics. The section will again arrange to have an offsite co-sponsored reception at the annual meetings. In the past, we have traditionally partnered with the Social Psychology and Sociology of Emotions sections. Last year we very successfully partnered with the Theory section.

2018 Finances Provide a narrative on how the 2018 budget matched with actual expenses and income from 2018. Please account for any substantive differences.

Pretty similar to years past. Less money was spent on the reception due to careful planning and partnering with Theory.

Budget for 2019 Creating a budget will help the section plan its activities for the year. Your 2019 budget should reflect the narrative in the “Plans for the Coming Year” section. The following table will help you organize and calculate a budget. Expected 2019 Expenditures

1 Section Allocation – Base Based off of this year’s final membership count as of September 30, sections receive a base allocation as follows:

• Sections with 300 or more members receive a base allocation of $1,000

• Sections with fewer than 300 members and more than 200 members receive: [# of section members - 100] x $5

• Sections with fewer than 199 members receive a base allocation of $500 2 Section Allocation – Per Member Based off of this year’s final membership count as of September 30, sections receive two dollars for each member. 3 Premium Dues The base rate is $10 for regular members, $5 for students and $10 for associate, low income, and high school teacher members. Any dues raised by the sections in excess of the base rate go directly to the section throughout the year based on actual membership numbers. Subscription Fees for Section Journals are not added here.

To see current and historical membership counts, please visit www.asanet.org/SectionMembership. Please note that membership year ends on September 30.

Miscellaneous Is there any additional information about the section or the area of study you would like to share with the Committee on Sections? Is there any feedback you would like to provide to the Committee on Sections?

There is significant overlap of AMSS with some other sections, for example, the sections on Social Psychology and the Sociology of Emotions. Because they are on the same day, members cannot typically attend sessions for both Social Psychology and AMSS, and we believe this hurts our attendance. If there is a way to rotate them to different session days, we would advocate for that.
