Government reports:A wealth of informationGovernment research and reports are a great source of information forIndigenous people in Australia.

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).The ABS surveys relevant to Indigenous communities and people include:

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Survey(NATSISS). NATSISS is a national social survey of Indigenous Australiansconducted by the ABS. The 2002 survey is the most recent data to bereleased and the second to be carried out since 1994. It containsinformation on family and culture, health and disability, education, employment, income and financial stress, housing, and law and justice. The NATSISS data is collected on a six-yearly basis and is comparable tothe General Social Survey of the general Australian population.

The Census. The Census is collected on a five-yearly basis from everyonein Australia and provides a wealth of information about the Australianpopulation. The largest and one of the most important statisticalcollections carried out by the ABS, the Census measures the number andkey characteristics of people and their dwellings. It collects informationon items such as income, education and health status, and providescomparable data for small geographic areas and population groups. Thisdemographic data is the source of many ABS reports and providesresearchers with data by which to compare the characteristics of their owncommunity or region.

Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA). The Census is also the sourcefor SEIFA, which is made up of four indexes that summarise and rankinformation about the social and economic wellbeing of the populationfor a wide range of geographic areas. Specific information about income, education, occupation, and housing conditions are ranked to show thelevel of advantage and disadvantage in Australian communities andregions.

All ABS data, indexes and surveys are available from the ABS website atwww.abs.gov.au and also from your local library. Please note that there maybe a small cost to accessing some reports on the ABS website.
