Sirianni Honored after Big WinSouthwestern coach Jay Sirianni

has been named the Buffalo BillsCoach of the Week after his Trojansclinched the C South Division with a27-20 win overFredonia last week-end.

Both teamentered the gameundefeated andranked in the TopTen in New YorkState.

“The leaguechampionship was on the line and itwas a big game,” Sirianni said. “Wetold the kids to take advantage of theopportunity. All eyes in Western NewYork were on this game so we toldthem to enjoy the moment and leave itall on the field.”

Southwestern jumped out early andled 27-6 but Fredonia scored on lastplay of the half to make it 27-13.

“That was a big play,” Sirianni said.“That score really got Fredonia back inthe game. We had some opportunities

in the second half but didnʼt score. Wemade enough plays to win.”

John Mistretta led the ground attackas he rushed for over 100 yards and aTD.

The Trojans also played the secondhalf without QB Jim Rauh who left thegame with a shoulder injury at the endof the first half. Rauh completed 6 of 7passes for 166 yards and 3 TDs beforehe was injured.

“Losing our quarterback really hurt,”Sirianni said, “He finished the first halfbut he couldnʼt come back.”

Rauh is questionable to play nextweek.

Jake Swan moved from wide receiv-er to quarterback for the second half.Swan had caught 3 passes for 140yards and 2 TDs before moving to QB.

“Jake did a nice job” Sirianni said.“We moved the ball, we just didnʼtscore.”

The victory is the 35th straight forSouthwestern, though Sirianni down-played the streak.

“Weʼve won six in a row,” he said.

“This yearʼs team is 6-0.”Fredonia may have given the

Trojans their stiffest test throughout thewinning streak.

“They are all tough,” Sirianni said.“Itʼs not easy to win football games butwe really had to earn this one.”

Sirianni, who played quarterback atSouthwestern, was a back-up quarter-back at Mount Union when the teamwon the national championship in1996.

Sirianniʼs older brother, Mike, is thehead coach at Washington & Jeffersonwhile his younger brother Nick is anoffensive assistant with the Kansas CityChiefs.

He has coached Southwestern since2003 and led the Trojans to four leaguetitles, three Section 6 titles and twoNew York State championships.

He started his coaching career asan assistant at Maple Grove beforemoving on to Alfred University. He alsocoached at Arunbel HS in Marylandbefore returning to Southwestern asthe Trojans head coach.

It’s not the critic who counts.

Not the man who points out wherethe strong man stumbled or wherethe doer of deeds could have donethem better.

The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood;

who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again...

...who at best knows,in the end, the triumphof high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly,

so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.

Kenmore West beat arch-rival Kenmore East 40-12last weekend in the schoolsʼ annual Neighborhoodgrudge match.

“Itʼs a rivalry game,” Kenmore West coach RichHarris said. “The kids look forward to it all year and willremember it for the rest of their lives.”

The Blue Devils led 14-6 at the half but exploded forfour touchdowns in thethird quarter to blow thegame wide open.

“I think we had a little bitof nerves,” Harris said. “Wewent into the game asheavy favorites. The kidsknew they were supposedto win. They were just jit-tery and we made somemistakes.”

Harris said that he wascalm during the halftimediscussion.

“I just told them to settledown and do what we do,”he said. “Our kids cameout and totally dominatedthe third quarter.”

The running game wasin high gear as MartinBailey rushed for 97 yardsand 2 TDs while QBMarcus Lobdell ran for 100yards and 2 TDs yards.

Kenmore West will nowplay for the Class AA NorthDivision title when the BlueDevils host Riverside thisweekend.

“Either team will win thedivision with a win,” Harris said. “Itʼs a true title game.”

Kenmore West last won the AA North championshipin 2000 under head coach Jerry Tutweiler.

“I was an assistant with Jerry,” Harris said. “Thatʼsback when it was just four teams making the playoffs.”

Harris says that the 10-year gap between divisiontitles is misleading.

“We lost to the eventual state champion in the play-offs,” Harris said. “Weʼve run into some pretty goodopponents. No one thinks of us as a powerhouse butwe have been right there.”

Last season, Kenmore West missed the playoffs asHarris was rebuilding the roster and the Blue Devilsstarted 0-5. Harris finally switched Lobdell from WR toquarterback and the Devils won three of their final fourgames.

“His first game as a starting quarterback wasagainst Lockport,” Harris said. “We lost but he had a

real good day passing. Marcus went 3-2 as a sopho-more QB and it turned our season around.”

Harris says that he was excited when Lobdell joinedthe program before his sophomore season.

“He had played in the spread offense as a freshmanat St. Joeʼs before he transfered over here,” Harrissaid. “Coming into camp, he was a sophomore and I

took him right up to thevarsity.”

Halfway through theseason, with the Devils at0-4 and out of the playoffs,Harris installed Lobdell atthe quarterback position.

“We were trying to buildfor the following season,”he said. “We thought hewould be a real threat inthe option offense but ittook a few weeks for himto get some confidence.”

Lobdell is an extremelyathletic quarterback.

“Heʼs an outstandingbasketball player,” Harrissaid. “Heʼs a 6-foot highjumper and participated inthe Empire State games.Heʼs a very athletic kid.”

“Heʼs very intelligent,”Harris said. “He sees thedefense and understandsthe offense.”

Ken West lost toClarence in the champi-onship game of the ClassA Bowl Tournament.

“We played a greatgame that night but Clarence beat us,” Harris said. “Istill felt pretty good about how we ended. We knew wehad some nice athletes coming back and some goodkids coming up from the JV team.”

Harris says he felt even better during the off-seasonand at the start of practice in August.

“I knew coming out of the scrimmage that we werea pretty good football team,” he said.

Kenmore West opened the 2010 season with a winover longtime nemesis North Tonawanda. But the daysimmediately following the win brought trouble.

“We lost our focus,” Harris said. “Not just physicallybut mentally. I was coach of the week, there were TVcameras in practice and the kids were giddy. Then welost to Niagara Falls. That was a real lesson learned. We need to stay grounded and keep working hard.”

“Our defense has reallystepped up,” coach DickLindamer said. “Our first-team defense has given up2 TDs and scored one in thelast three games.”

The Lancers, who started0-3, are now in the thick ofthe Class B playoff race. The Lancers need to beatNewfane this week and gethelp from elsewhere toclinch a spot.

“We asked our defenseto dig a little deeper andgive a little extra,” Lindamersaid, “and they have, espe-cially the defensive line.”

Senior tackle JeremyCrone has led the defensiveresurgence. He had 3 tack-les for loss last week.

“We expected a lot out ofhim,” Lindamer said, “and hehas resonded with big gameafter big game.”

If the Warriors beatBurgard this week, they willqualify for the Class B play-offs. A loss to Burgardmeans Cheektowaga willneed help to get in.

Coach Scott Zipp made arecent lineup move when heswitched Brooks from WR tofullback.

“He was a blocking wide-out for us,” Zipp said. “Weasked to play fullback on thespur of the moment. Wemoved him on a Tuesdayand he started that Friday. He scored a touchdown onhis second carry.”

Zipp says that Brookssurprised him with his knowl-edge of the position.

“I have yet to teach him asingle play at fullback,” hesaid. “He knew every play.He knew every step, heknew our pass protections.”

Such insight is rare in ahigh school player.

Dunkirk lost to Pioneer 35-6 lastweek and were eliminated from theClass B playoffs. Dunkirk has a chanceto end the regular season on a highnote as they play arch-rival Fredoniathis weekend.

“Weʼve been playing for 109 years,”coach Tim Majka said. “Itʼs important tothe communities and to both schools.”

However, beating Fredonia wouldnot erase the disappointment of missingthe playoffs, according to Majka.

“It would be nice,” he said, “but wemade the playoffs last year. The guys inour program are starting to realize thereare greater things to accomplish. We wantto play in the Carrier Dome some day.”

Running back Vinny Bomasutorushed for 228 yards in the loss to

Pioneer. Bomasuto needs just 6 moreyards to become the first Dunkirk playerto rush for 1,000 yards in a seasonsince Travis Maxwell did it in 1995.

“That would be great for our pro-gram,” Majka said. “As much as Vinniehas done this year, itʼs hard for anyoneto get 1,000 without linemen blocking forhim. There are a lot of guys doing theright things to have a 1,000-yard back.”

Bomasuto will probably not play col-lege football, Majka said.

“He has a promising career in base-ball,” he said. “Vinny is being looked atby some pretty good Division I baseballschools. He played in the Empire StateGames and got a lot of exposure fromthat. Heʼs a heck of a football player butI think his future is in baseball.”

WinForestville earned its first

victory of the season with a20-6 over Franklinville.

“The kids were excited,”coach Scot Greenough said.“Itʼs been a tough year forthem. They were fired up,especially on Homecoming.”

Greenough says that hisHornets have struggled witha young roster this fall.

“Over half the roster isfreshman and sophomores,”he said. “And injuries havebeen wth us since the firstweek of the season. Of the5 kids that started on offen-sive line, we have one left.”

Greenough says thatForestville will eventuallybenefit from the experience.

“A lot of younger kidshave had to step up andplay,” he said. “It will begood down the road, butright now, its tough.”

The only opening-daystarter still on the line issenior Mike Franklin.

“Heʼs a good leader andhe works hard,” Greenoughsaid. “He sets a good exam-ple for the younger kids.Mike does everything.”

Franklin (6-2, 250) hasstarted on the OL since hissophomore season.

“Heʼs smart,” Greenoughsaid. “Heʼs got good tech-nique and his footwork issolid. He knows how toblock and how to run astunt. He can relay that tothe kids and itʼs like havinga coach on the field.”

“He only played the firsthalf,” coach Dan Greco said.“He had just 14 carries.”

The Thunderbirds arenow on the verge of clinch-ing a Class D playoff spot. Ifthey beat Sherman thisweek, the T-Birds are in...the exact situation theyfaced in 2009.

“Last year, we faced aWin-and-In game at theend,” Greco said, “and welost to Panama. The kidshave been thinking aboutthat for a full year.”

Greco says that the bit-terness over missing the2009 post-season fueled theoff-season work.

“We had no trouble get-ting kids in the weight room,”Greco said. “They were pret-ty devastated.”

Kenny, a senior, leads allWNY running backs with1,250 yards and 22 TDs.

“Steve has had a greatseason,” Greco said. “He

had 1,000 yards after justfive games. He really wentto work in the off-season.The linemen all got them-selves bigger and stronger, too. Itʼs paying off.”

Kenny (6-3, 230) hasbeen timed at 4.7 in the 40.

“He has a great verticaljump,” Greco said. “Heʼsfast, strong and has a greatwork ethic. You wonʼt hear abad word about him.”

Nichols lost to league-rival St. Maryʼs27-14 last weekend as the Big Greendropped to 2-3 on the season.

“It was a good effort but there arethings that we could have done better,”coach Colin Brinson said. “The ʻgreat-effortʼ routine is getting old. We play towin and the kids want to win.”

Matt Benedict had a solid day as herushed for 64 yards and a TD. Benedictalso passed for 112 yards and a TD outof the Wildcat formation and tossed a 2-point PAT pass.

“He really works hard on makinghimself stronger and being a better ath-lete,” Brinson said. “Heʼs a three-sportathlete. He has speed but also a greatdeal of intelligence. Heʼs fun to coach.”

Benedict has now rushed for more

than 700 yards this season.“Matt has a quiet intensity about

him,” Brinson said. “He has a passionfor winning that is truly remarkable.Heʼs not a guy you get every year.”

Benedict is also averaging 13.6 tack-les a game, the leading figure on theNichols defense.

“Heʼs well-conditioned and has agreat motor,” Brinson said.

Benedict is also an Honors student. “Heʼs looking at Ivy League schools,”

Brinson said. “He went to the Princetonfootball camp and they liked him. Heʼsalso looking at attending Amherst,Middlebury and Williams.”

Benedict also plays hockey atNichols and was named an All-Catholicplayer in lacrosse.

Football AllianceMcKinley beat Starpoint 34-14 last

weekend and clinched a spot in theClass A playoffs.

The Macks will be the third-seed outof the A North Division and will openthe post-season at Amherst.

“It doesnʼt matter to us where weplay,” Mckinley coach Ed Wilson said.“As long as weʼre in.”

However,Wilson is still notcompletely readyto accept the factthat his team hasqualified.

McKinley suf-fered the ultimateheartbreak in2009 when theythought they hadqualified for theHarvard CupPlayoffs.

“We beatSouth Park in thelast game andthought we werein,” Wilson said.“We were confi-dent and we toldthe kids that theywere in.”

McKinley hadfinished 4-4 andmultiple sourceshad named the Macks as a playoffteam. Unfortunately, when all the tie-breakers were sorted out, McKinleywas left on the outside of the 4-teamHarvard Cup tournament.

“It was tough,” Wilson said. “It wasvery disheartening. Those kids foughtreally hard to make it in. Instead, wepacked up and went home.”

As a result, Wilson was still a littlenervous about telling his players theyhad, indeed, qualified for the Section 6playoffs.

“Iʼm waiting to hear something offi-cial before I say anything this year,” hesaid. “A lot of those kids are here againand I remember how let down theywere.”

Wilson says that he was pleased

with the effort his players put into over-coming the disappointment.

“We picked up the pieces andworked hard in the off-season,” he said.“We really looked forward to being inSection 6. We prepared for the chanceto face the best. The kids wanted toplay the best.”

McKinley may be one of the mostdangerous teamsin the Class Aplayoffs. TheMacks are athleticat the skill posi-tions and have alegitimate DivisionI prospect on theline with seniorAnthony Sanders.

“Anthony hasnʼtgiven up anysacks this year,”Wilson said. “Hehas protected verywell. He playsboth sides of theball and we rotatehim between nosetackle and defen-sive end. He canplay any techniqueyou put him in.”

Sanders is 6-3and 295 poundsand has been

timed at 4.7 in the 40-yard dash.“He is certainly not a slow kid for a

big man,” Wilson said. “He has phe-nomenal hands and better feet. He alsoplays basketball and is a great passer.”

Despite being a big man, Sandersalso serves as the Macks punter andkicker.

“He can hit the ball high and give thespecial teams a chance to get down-field to make a play,” Wilson said

Sanders also maintains an academicaverage close to 90.

“Anthony is a stellar young man,”Wilson said. “Heʼs very respectful and ateam leader. He carries himself with agreat respect and demeanor. Weʼvenever had a negative report on him, ever.”

Lockport lost Riverside23-16 in OT last weekend.Despite the loss, the Lionsclinched a playoff spotwhen Niagara Falls lost thefollowing day.

If the Lions beatWilliamsville North thisweekend, they will earn ahome game in the firstround of the AA playoffs.

Javeon Tomlinson hasbecome an important partof Lockportʼs drive to theplayoffs.

“Javeon is very fast,”Bronson said. “Heʼs is asprinter on track team. Heis deceptively strong andgets into weight room quitea bit. He is becoming moreconfident in his ability ashe has matured.”

Tomlinson earned astarting role at defensiveend during the pre-season.

But no matter howLockportʼs season ends,Javeon may have alreadywon something far moreimportant than a footballchampionship.

“I tell you what,”Bronson said. “Heʼs done aheck of a job with his life.He was certainly headeddown that statistical path-way to nowhere.”

Tomlinson has had demons chasing him for years. He wasjust 10 when he witnessed his fatherʼs murder in his familyʼsown driveway.

“My dad and I were very close,” Javeon said. “He alwayswanted me to play football.”

What Javeon and his mother Shelia did not know was thatDaniel Tomlinson, who had moved to the United States fromJamaica in 19XX, had another part of his life that they werenot privy too.

“My father was involved in some illegal activities,” Javeonsaid. “We had no idea about any of it.”

Shelia was stunned when her husband was arrested formarijuana and weapons possession in December of 2002.

“I spent 20 years of my life with this person,” Sheila said. “I

was never even aware ofthis. It really took our fami-ly for loop.”

On July 29, 2003, eightmonths after his arrest,Donald was outside work-ing on a new car that thefamily had just purchased.

“I was watching amovie but something toldme to go outside,” Javeonsaid. “Two minutes later, aman came walking up ourdriveway and shot myfather.”

The man shot Danielpoint-blank in the face - infront of Shelia and allthree of the Tomlinsonchildren.

“I was so close I hadgunpowder on my face,”Shelia said. “I wasscreaming and the mankept shooting him.”

After the initial chaos, more news about Danielbegan to trickle out to thecommunity.

Lockport police believethat Daniel Tomlinson hadties with a local group ofJamaicans who wereimporting marijuana.

No one has ever beencharged in Danielʼs mur-der and the case is now inthe Cold Case files at the

Lockport Police Department. It is suspected that anyone con-nected with the crime has left the country and the chances ofever solving it are slim.

The immediate aftermath was a nightmare.“We had to leave the country,” Shelia said. “We went to

Jamaica to get away from everything. Daniel is buried there.”Shelia tried to focus on her children while trying to regain

her footing.“My life had changed forever,” Shelia said. “Overnight, our

financial situation had changed drastically. I was suddenlyresponsible for three young people and I was all alone.”

Javeonʼs sister, Ikea, and his brother, OʼBrian, both

seemed to deal with the tragedy. They were both top-notchstudents at Lockport High School and are now in college andworking toward degrees.

But Javeon struggled.“He was 10,” Shelia said. “Javeon and his dad were very

close. He would constantly ask me questions that I had noanswers for.”

Around the age of 15, Javeonʼs anger and despair began tobubble to the surface.

“I had a very negative attitude about everything,” Javeonsaid. “I had fights. My grades went down.”

Finally, about a year ago, Javeon was arrested and spenttwo nights in jail.

“Javeon has had a rough go of it,” Bronson said. “His anger, his behavior and way of dealing with things were all very dis-ruptive. When he got arrested, we took him off the team andhe did not finish the season with us.”

Bronson was worried about Tomlinson.“We were all very concerned,” Bronson said. “Javeon was

volatile. He was angry. But, no matter how you feel about akid, at that moment, you canʼt keep him on the team.”

Throughout the remainder of the season, Shelia stayed incontact with Bronson.

“She said that Javeon needed football,” Bronson said. “Heneeded to be involved with something that was good for him.Something that runs all year round.”

The two nights in jail may have been a blessing.“The other people I was around in the jail,” Javeon said, “I

didnʼt even understand the things they were talking about. Ijust wasnʼt raised that way. I knew I needed to change.”

Javeon emerged from jail a different person. A light hadgone on and he was ready to drop the anger.

“I got home and just realized that being stuck in the pastwonʼt get you anywhere,” he said. “I knew the statistics. I knewthat I was supposed to fail. I wanted to prove people wrong.”

Bronson opened the door for Javeon to return to the team.“As soon as the season ended, he re-joined us and showed

up to the off-season workouts on a regular basis,” Bronsonsaid. “He really seemed determined to do whatever was nec-essary to participate and contribute. Weʼve given him everyopportunity and heʼs truly taken advantage of it.”

Javeon says that football has given him focus.“Football gave me discipline,” he said. “It gave me respect,

committment, leadership. Football has been very good for me.”Javeon says he very much wants to play in Ralph Wilson

Stadium. Such an ending to the season would truly be areward for working so hard to change his own path.

“I dealt with what I had to deal with,” Tomlinson said. “Ienjoy every day now, stress free.”

Both Javeon and Shelia feel badly that Daniel is onlyremembered for being murdered.

“He was on his way to Niagara University that fall,” Sheliasaid. “He wanted to become an Electronic Engineer. Nobodyknows that about him.”

Javeon now has an academic average in the high 80s andis hoping to attend college. His behavior has been exemplarysince he left the jail.

“Heʼs definitely a different person since that time,” Bronsonsaid. “Without a doubt, heʼs been a very good player and avery positive force on our team.”

When it comes to commitment it is singleness of pur-pose that demonstrates 100% effort, 100% of the time. The definition: Loyalty or dedication to a team, a person ora cause which is based on a choice not a condition. OUT-COME = FINISH

If you have the Heart of a Champion you cannot servetwo masters for you will either hate the one and love theother; or else you will be dedicated to one and despise theother. Simply stated you have to make a choice. You areeither playing for the name on the back of your jersey orthe name on the front of your jersey. Your Commitmentlevel will parallel your work level. The harder you work theharder it is to surrender. It is not how you start the seasonit is how you finish. Cut away all the excuses stay dedicat-ed, be loyal keep your promise, be faithful and be a con-tender.
