Raychem materials technology is at the coreof the development of our new range of TFT Elastomeric Terminations.

Designed for both indoor and outdoor usein all climate conditions, the TFT rangecovers applications on single core plasticcables up to 42 kV.

The TFT has been developed to complementthe Raychem termination product line.TFT includes an elastomeric body materialin contrast to the semi-crystalline polymericbody of the heat-shrink terminations. Bothtypes of bodies consist of crosslinked poly-mer networks and both types of terminationsare easy to install over a range of cablesizes.

The TFT includes: – a non-tracking, silicone-based,

pre-expanded elastomeric body – a stress control patch – self amalgamating sealant tape

These components combine to provide thesame important functions as heat-shrinkproducts: electrical performance, stresscontrol, and moisture sealing. Because ofthe inherent physical property differencesbetween semi-crystalline and rubbery poly-mers, the TFT stress control and sealantmaterials are tailored to achieve optimumperformance with an elastomeric system.

The proprietary materials used in Raychemcable accessories are subjected to a longperiod of optimisation with respect toproduct design and function, manufacturingand expected service environments.

Raychem recognises that polymeric and elastomeric insulation materials are notgeneric and that extreme variations anddifferences can exist among base polymergrades and additives. Formulations consistnot only of polymer but of additives and fillers which greatly influence material pro-perties. It is the entire formulation packagein combination with compounding proced-ures, material processing, product designand assembly that all contribute to the overall product performance.

Insulation materialsThe materials employed in TFT have under-gone many years of development, yieldingan elastomeric product with exceptionalelectrical and weathering performance properties.

The insulation material has been developedto maximize the inherent material hydropho-bicity and thermal-stability characteristics ofsilicone and, through formulation expertise,to deliver excellent erosion resistance, weatherability and dielectric properties.

Stress control materialsA new patch for electrical stress control hasbeen developed with physical and electricalproperties providing superior performancewhen combined with the TFT termination.

Raychem has formulated a superior newstress control material which is included in the patch resulting in an outstandingimpulse withstand performance of the TFT termination.

Sealant tapes to prevent moisture ingressSealant is applied at the top and the bottomof the prepared cable. The tape is self amal-gamating and resistant to tracking and ero-sion. When the TFT body is installed, itscompressive force provides a tight seal preventing moisture ingress.

Product rangeThe product line is designed for single corepolymeric cables up to 400 mm2 for 36 kVcables. This coverage is completed with aminimum number of designs.

The products are fully tested to CENELECspecification HD 629 and to IEEE Std.48-1996.

For cable box applications TFT can be com-bined with the Raychem elastomeric bus-hing boot (RCAB) or insulated connectionsystem (RICS) to fit most types of switch-gear.

For pole top applications Raychem cansupply TFT together with polymeric supportinsulators (EPBI), Polygarde metal oxidesurge arresters and most fittings requiredfor installation.

Kit content Each standard TFT product consists of anouter elastomeric termination body on apre-lubricated, crush resistant core (hold-out), a stress control patch, sealant tapes,leakage current collector and installationinstructions. For special applications contact your localRaychem sales office.

over several decades under severeenvironmental conditions. It deliversoutstanding tracking and erosionresistance, mechanical strength, weatherability and dielectric properties.

Stress control materialsTyco’s Energy Division has formu-lated a new electrical stress controlmaterial, which is based on longexperience with Raychem ceramicsemiconductor technology (ZnO). The ZnO stress control system is integrated in a heat-shrinkable insulating tubing. It fills any irregul-arities, bonds to the insulation andachieves excellent electrical perform-ance.

Product rangeThe product line is designed for poly-mer cables from 10 to 800 mm2 andup to 42 kV. This coverage is achievedwith a minimum number of designvariants.

The products are fully tested inaccordance with CENELEC specifi-cation HD629 which encompassesinternational standards such as IEC,British Standards and VDE.

For cable box applications, IXSU-Fcan be combined with either Raychem’s elastomeric bushing boot (RCAB) or Raychem’s insulatedconnection system (RICS) to fit mosttypes of switchgear bushing currently available.

For pole top applications, we cansupply OXSU-F along with polymericsupport insulators (EPBI), Polygardemetal oxide surge arresters (HDA),and most fittings required for installation.

All IXSU-F/OXSU-F components havefull traceability of raw materials andmanufacture according to ISO 9001and ISO 14001.

Kit content Each IXSU-F/OXSU-F kit consists ofthe insulation tubing including coex-truded stress control, sealant tapesand installation instructions. The Raychem termination system is compatible with all types ofarmoured cable. The system includes a completerange of solderless accessories forearthing insulation screens and cable armour and for grounding lead sheaths. All our indoor terminations for poly-meric or paper insulated cables can be used with RICS (RaychemInsulated Connection System). The RICS, fully insulated, right-angleand straight adaptors make it easy toconnect any type of cable to moderncompact electrical equipment. A special RICS, accommodating aZnO Surge Arrester is now availableas well as a low profile, one piececable termination (IXSU), designedspecifically for applications with verylimited clearances between phases.

We have the universal jointing system for all types of paper andpolymeric cable up to 36 kV. Thesame system allows transition jointsbetween different tree-core papercable and transitions from paper topolymeric cables. Trifurcations withany combination of cables are alsoeasy with the Raychem jointing system.

Technical dataRaychem elastomeric insulatingboots are moulded parts which fitover the connection between thecable lug and the inline or right-angled equipment bushing to improve phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground insulation. They are usedin switchgear and transformer cableboxes where the air clearances areinsufficient for normal operation, or to protect against flashover dueto rodents or high humidity.

The non-tracking elastomeric housing has excellent erosion resistance, dielectric properties andenvironmental resistance, givingsuperb per-formance in areas ofhigh humidity and electrical stress.

RCAB boots works in combinationwith all Raychem termination productlines including both elastomeric andtraditional heatshrink technology.

RCAB boots are quick and easy toinstall and do not require any tapingof the bushing or the termination.The boot can easily be removed and reinstalled without the need for additional material or tooling, allowing access to the bushingconnection for test purposes.
