Unit 3: Chemical Bonding
Section 3: Molecular Geometry
Multiple Bonds
Multiple Bonds – occur in covalent compounds when atoms share more than one pair of electrons Double Bond –
atoms share 2 pairs of electrons
Triple Bond – atoms share 3 pairs of electrons
Bond Strength vs. Bond Length
The more bonds between 2 atoms, the stronger the bond
The more bonds between 2 atoms, the shorter the length of the bonds
Bond Strength
Single Bond < Double Bond < Triple
Bond
Bond Length
Single Bond > Double Bond > Triple

VSEPR Theory – “Valence-Shell Electron-Pair Repulsion”
States that repulsion between valence electrons causes electron pairs/bonds to be placed as far apart as possible. Electrons have the same charge, which causes them to repel each other
VSEPR Theory (Continued)
Electrons repelling leads to unique angles between atoms in the molecule.▪ Bond Angle – angle made between
two adjacent atoms in a moleculeBending of molecules leads to specific molecular shapes…
