2.3 Watershed Code Guidance

Please follow the instructions below to locate DNR watershed codes. To receive reimbursement

for projects funded with DATCP cost-sharing, you must provide a watershed codes that

identifies the location of each cost-shared practice. When requesting a reimbursement for cost-

sharing of a nutrient management plan, use the watershed code associated with the largest

number of cost-shared acres covered by the plan.

How to use DNR’s Web Mapping Applications

1. Go to the DNR Surface Water Data Viewer by doing either of the following:

a) Enter this address to go directly to the DNR Surface Water Data Viewer,

http://dnrmaps.wi.gov/sl/?Viewer=SWDV,

b) Go to the DNR Website that lists “Interactive Web Mapping Applications,”

http://dnr.wi.gov/maps/gis/applist.html, find and open the link titled “Surface Water Data

Viewer,” which will take you to webpage where you can launch Surface Water Data

Viewer Web Mapping Application. Look under the “Overview” tab to find the link.

2. Select the “Find Location” tab located at the top of the screen and then click on “Find

Location” icon with the magnifying glass (circled in red).

3. Under “Find Location,” select the option to identify by Township, Range, and Section and

then click on the “Find” button (circled in red) in the lower right corner of the legend area.

Note: Do not click the “Find Location” button in the legend box

4. Enter the Township, Range and Section for the location you are interested in, e.g., Township

18 North, Range 22 East, Section 12 (For the purposes of locating practices funded using

DATCP cost-share funds, the necessary information can be found in Section 1A. of the

DATCP cost-share contract under the legal description). After pressing the “find” button, the

map will zoom in on the location you selected, and the legend will change to list data from this

location.

5. You’ll notice that there isn’t much information displayed on the map. You will need to

select the necessary layers to help you get the information for identifying the correct

watershed code. Here is how you start:

a) Click on the “Show Layers” option (the blue-red-green picture circled in red).

b) Under “Operational Layers” open the + “Water Resources” folder and then check the box

next to “Watersheds” (circled in red). This will turn on the watershed boundaries. A

label for the watershed will appear in the map view. In this case, the watershed name is

Sevenmile and Silver Creeks.

6. For additional detail, under “Operational Layers” you may also select + “Land Descriptions

& Cadastral” folder. Be sure to check the boxes located in front of Township, Section and

Quarter-Quarter.

7. You can also turn on an aerial photo to help you locate the property by selecting “Base

Maps” under the Map Layers and checking in the “Air Photos (NAIP 2008)” option.

8. After turning on the necessary layers, you can pinpoint the location of the property and find

the watershed code. Click on the “Point Identify” button (circled in red). Hold your cursor

over the area you’re interested in and click once on the screen. On the left side of the screen,

your results should be listed. The watershed code (in this case MA01) is the one you should

use to identify the watershed location, for example, for the purposes of completing the

DATCP reimbursement form.

9. If you want to print this map, open the “Maps & Data” tab the top of the Viewer, and then

click on the “Print” button (circled in red). You will provided be options to create a .pdf

map.

You can use the following table (listing watershed codes by county) to help you identify or

confirm the appropriate code for the practice.
