    1.04 REFERENCES

     A. The referred codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level ofquality for materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between thesestandards and the text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.

    1. NFPA 701 Fire Tests for Flame Propagation of Textiles andFilms

    1.05 DEFINITIONS

     A. blackout lining:  A layer of opaque material is sandwiched between two layers ofcotton fabric. In this way all light is excluded. Some are heavy and difficult topenetrate with a needle, while others are softer. Both will add to the weight but willalso improve the draping qualities. Usually in cream or white.

    B. bottom rail: The bottom of a shade or blind. 

    C. carriers: The small mechanisms which attach the vanes to the headrail track of avertical blind. 

    D. cord lock: The mechanism of a shade or blind which allows the product to stop atany given point.

    E. cording set: Equipment for drawing curtains with a pull cord.

    F. cotton duck:  A cream cotton varying in weight from 200 to 425 g/m2. Heavier

    varieties are hard to penetrate with a needle and so are ideal for no-sew curtains asthey need no lining and the edges can be pinked and glued. Widths range from 91 to340 cm. The edges may need trimming. 

    G. curtain:  A window covering to floor- or sill-length, usually with fullness in the width,which is sometimes hung alone or on one side of a window but more often is used inpairs. It hangs from a rod or pole by means of hooks or tabs or is slotted onto a rod.

     A term often used to mean a drapery.

    H. curtain lining: Thin fabric, usually cotton, used to line curtains. 

    I. drapery:  A heavy-full-length curtain with a pleated heading; the term is oftenshortened to drape. It is also used to mean draped fabric such as a swag.

    J. draw rod: Rod inserted into the heading used to open and close curtains.

    K. face fabric: The principal fabric of curtains or draperies, facing the interior of theroom.

    L. finished length: The length from top edge to base edge of a finished curtain,drapery, shade, valance, or cornice.

    M. finished width: The width of the finished heading, after pleating or gathering.

    N. flat curtain rod: A curtain rod not operated by a cord and pulley as a traverse rod is. 

    O. French pleats: Hand-sewn triple pleats separated by flat areas on a curtain heading. Also called pinch pleats.

    P. glass curtains: Sheer under-curtains hanging behind the main curtains.

    Q. grommet: A metal ring punched through fabric to create a secure hole through whichpoles, rods, or wire can be inserted.

    R. heading: The top of a curtain, drapery, valance, or balloon shade, finished with tape,ties, rings, or other treatments, which hangs from a rod or pole. Headings range fromsimple, unpleated tabs to handmade pleats backed by hooks. They are often madeusing decorator tape to form pinch pleats or gathered headings.

    S. lace: Very light open-work fabric made from cotton, viscose or nylon; pattern can beapplied to mesh ground. It is used in windows for privacy, as bed drapes and asromantic-style bedcovers, cushion covers and dressing-table skirts. It is alsoavailable as edging and in frills.

    T. ladder: The strings on a blind used to support the slats. 

    U. lining:  A secondary hanging sewn in at the back of a curtain to protect it from the

    light and improve its hanging qualities.

    V. lining fabric: A secondary fabric used to back curtains to protect them from light anddust. Usually a cotton sateen fabric with a slight sheen.

    W. louver: The part of a shutter which opens and closes. 

    X. macro blind: 50 mm aluminum slats blind. 

    Y. micro blind: 12 mm aluminum slats blind. 

    Z. mini blind: 25 mm aluminum slats blind. 

     AA. net:  A very light, open-mesh, almost transparent fabric made from cotton, silk, orman-made fibers, usually in white or cream but these days available in a wide rangeof colors including dramatic dark ones.

    BB. pre-corded track: Curtain track bought with an integral cording system for closingand opening curtains.

    CC. pull-ups: Curtains which pull up vertically. 

    DD. recess: The window niche in which a window is fitted.

    EE. recessed fitting: Curtain or blind fixed within the recess of a window.

    FF. return: The part of a curtain, drapery, cornice, or valance that goes around the side.To hang flush with the wall at right angles, it is usually equivalent to the distancebetween the front surface and the wall.

    GG. rod:  A rail or track from which a curtain, drapery, or sometimes a valance is hung. Atraverse rod is operated with a cord and pulley system, and curtains on a flat curtainrod are opened and closed by hand.

    HH. rod-pocket curtain: A curtain where the top forms a pocket which is gathered onto arod or pole.

    II. roller shade:  A shade of stiffened fabric, usually operated by a spring mechanism,that rolls up above the window. A pull down flat fabric shade.

    JJ. Roman shade:  A flat shade with dowels slotted horizontally up the back, so it caneasily be pulled up into soft horizontal folds.

    KK. selvage: The defined warp edge of the fabric, specially woven to prevent unraveling.

    LL. shade:  A fabric window covering that can be pulled up on a roller or pleated upvertically. See balloon, roller, and Roman shades.

    MM. slat:  A long, flat piece of wood used at the base of either a roller or Roman shade.The part of a horizontal blind which tilts open and closed.

    NN. stackback: The space taken up by pleated curtains or draperies when open; it isalso the area on either side of a window, where curtains or draperies are stackedback.

    OO. stationary curtains/draperies: Curtains/draperies in which the heading does notmove; they may be held open by tiebacks, holdbacks, or reefing, or they may besheer curtains that are permanently closed, such as a sash curtain.

    PP. swag:  A sweeping drape at the top of a window, appearing to hang from points ateither side. The term is often used to include the cascades that hang at the sides.

     Also known as a festoon. 

    QQ. traverse rod:  A rod that allows the curtains or draperies to be operated by a cordand pulley. A two-way traverse rod operates two curtains/draperies in oppositedirections at once.

    RR. undercurtains: Curtains that hang behind the main curtains or draperies.

    SS. valance: A gathered or pleated panel that hangs above the curtain to hide the curtainrod. An attached valance is attached to the top of the curtain, but other types usuallyhang from the front edge of a valance shelf. Unlike a cornice, a valance is not rigid.

    TT. valance shelf:  A board mounted above a window at right angles to the wall like ashelf. One or more rods, a cornice, a valance, a swag, or a covered cornice boardmay be attached to it.

    UU. vertical blind:  A blind vertically aligned vanes, made of either vinyl, fabric, or fabricinserted into vinyl. 

    VV. window treatments: Term used to encompass a variety of window coverings usedto protect privacy, insulate heat and cold, and filter light; and fulfilling aesthetic andfunctional needs at the same time. Frequently used to describe most types of windowcoverings such as sheers, drapes, curtains, blinds, shades and valances.

    1.06 SUBMITTALS

     A. The Contractor shall submit to the Royal Commission, under the provisions ofSECTION 01330, the following items for review and approval before commencingWork:

    1. Product Data

    a) Manufacturer's product data sheets, specifications, performance data,physical properties and installation instructions for the following:

    1) Window blinds.

    2) Window shades.

    3) Fabrics.

    4) Carriers, tracks, hardware and accessories.

    b) Provide information for fabric including size limitations, fire resistanceinformation and toxicity information.

    c) Identify available shade cloth colors, densities and weaves.

    2. Manufacturer's Certificates

    a) Certificates stating that all materials delivered to the site are inconformance with the provisions of the specification and are intended forthe applications shown.

    b) Provide test reports for window shades for fire resistance.

    3. Shop Drawings

    a) Show complete fabrication and installation details at 1:50 scale. Foreach type of window treatment approved, show window openings, layoutand arrangements, location of track and components, direction of draw,mounting heights, fixing details, dimensions, grounds and accessories,as applicable.

    b) For electrically operated units, submit electrical and control wiringdiagrams and schematics for the entire system. Show each componentof the system with a detailed list of components, wiring schematics andoperational characteristics for every level of operation.

    c) Include actual measurements taken at the Project site where practical.

    4. Samples

    a) Track samples, 150 mm in length.

    b) Horizontal blind slats and vertical blind louvers, 150 mm in length, fabricsamples (shade material) and solar control film, minimum 150 x 150 mmin size, indicating full range of colors, densities and weaves available forinitial selection.

    c) All associated hardware, fixings and accessories.

    d) Final samples in sizes mentioned above for each type of materialselected shall illustrate approved finishes.

    e) Samples will be reviewed by the Royal Commission for color, texture,

    and visual appearance of joints only.

    5. Schedule

    a) Provide window shade schedule listing rooms, field verified window

    dimensions, quantities, type of shade, controls, fabric and color.

    6. Maintenance Instructions

    a) Furnish maintenance instructions for operation and maintenance of eachtype of window treatment for use by the Royal Commission afteracceptance of the work.

    7. Quality Control Submittals

    a) Reports and records of the Contractor’s Internal Quality Control.

    b) Reports and records of the Contractor’s External Quality Control.

    1.07 QUALITY CONTROL

     A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop andpropose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specifiedquality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance withSECTION 01450.

    B. Codes and Standards

    1. The Contractor shall comply with the applicable provisions of the referencedcodes and standards, except as otherwise shown and specified by the Royal

    Commission.

    C. Qualifications

    1. Products used in the work of this Section shall be produced by manufacturersregularly engaged in manufacturing window treatment units, such as blinds,shades and their accessories, and with a history of successful productionacceptable to the Royal Commission.

    D. Quality Assurance

    1. Window treatment shall be provided, complete with necessary brackets,fittings, and hardware. Each window treatment type shall be a complete unitprovided in accordance with the approved Window Treatment Schedule.Equipment shall be mounted and operated as per manufacturer's instructions.Windows to receive a treatment shall be completely covered. The Contractorshall take measurements at the building and shall be responsible for theproper fitting and hanging of the equipment.

    2. Products specified in this Section shall be obtained from a singlemanufacturer.

    3. Installers shall have a minimum 3 years documented experience for

    successfully completing the type of work specified herein.

    E. Internal Quality Control

    1. The Contractor’s internal quality control shall include but not be limited to:

    a) Checking supplier’s test certificates and certificates of compliance toconform to specification and referenced standards prior to assembly orinstallation.

    b) Checking supplier’s delivery tickets for compliance with supply order andspecification.

    1.08 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

     A. All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in fullaccordance with the respective health and safety requirements established by the

    following:

    1. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

    a) Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.

    2. Royal Commission Regulations

    a) Standards, Contractual Conditions, and Health and Safety Systems.

    3. Contractor

    a) Health and Safety Standards and Systems as accepted by the Royal

    Commission.

    B. In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall beemployed throughout.

    1.09 FIELD MEASUREMENTS

     A. The Contractor shall become familiar with details of the work, verify dimensions in thefield, and shall inform the Royal Commission of any discrepancy before performingthe work.

    1.10 WARRANTY

     A. For blinds, shades and drapery systems, the Contractor shall provide themanufacturer’s standard performance guaranties or warranties duly executed in thename of the Royal Commission, and beginning from the date of SubstantialCompletion of the Project for a period of, minimum, 5 years.

    B. Provide 10 year manufacturer's replacement warranty to cover solar control filmsagainst peeling, cracking, discoloring, deteriorating, or failing to perform.

    1.11 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE

     A. The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store material in accordance withSECTIONS 01650 and 01660, as well as the following requirements:

    1. Ordering

    a) Comply with manufacturer's ordering instructions and lead timerequirements to avoid delays, but minimize on-site storage.

    2. Delivery

    a) Do not deliver window shades until building is enclosed and constructionwithin spaces where shades will be installed is substantially complete, inorder to reduce potential damage to materials.

    b) All materials shall be delivered in manufacturer's unopened, undamagedpackages, fully identified with trade name, item identification, color and

    finish, and labeled in accordance with the approved Window TreatmentSchedule.

    3. Storage and Protection

    a) Store materials in strict accordance with the manufacturer'srecommendations, where they will be free from damage anddeterioration by dust, dirt, effects of moisture, condensation,temperature changes, direct exposure to sun, and other causes.

    b) Store materials flat on blocking to retain original shape.

    c) Materials shall be easily accessible for inspection and handling.

    d) Maintain uniform temperature for 24 hours before to 24 hours afterinstallation.

    4. Handling

    a) Do not open containers until needed for installation, unless verificationinspection is required.

    b) All material shall be handled as per manufacturer’s instructions,including those for installation.

    PART 2 PRODUCTS

    2.01 GENERAL

     A. All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when

    available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and productsmanufactured out-of-Kingdom must be approved by the Royal Commission.

    B. Each blind, including hardware, accessory items, mounting brackets and fastenings,shall be provided as a complete unit produced by one manufacturer. All parts shall beone color unless otherwise indicated, and match the color of the blind slat. Steelfeatures shall be treated for corrosion resistance.

    2.02 MATERIALS

     A. All blinds, shades and drapery hardware components shall only be fabricated inaluminum, stainless steel, corrosion-resistant steel, engineering plastics, poly

    carbonates and ceramics for a long and maintenance free product life. Furthermore,plastics that could become brittle from heat and age shall not be used.

    B. Mounting clips shall be made of stainless steel.

    2.03 HORIZONTAL (VENETIAN) BLINDS

     A. General

    1. Horizontal blinds shall be typically fabricated to fill the openings from head-to-sill and jamb-to-jamb with inside mounted brackets. A clearance of 6 mm shallbe allowed at each jamb. However, this typical mounting procedure may not be

    appropriate under certain conditions, such as for windows in special frames,sliding glass doors, or windows in doors. The Contractor shall ascertain theclearances needed when detailing the mounting at all such locations.

    2. Horizontal blinds shall conform to FS AA-V-00200.

    3. Blind units shall be capable of nominally 180° partial tilting operation and full-height raising. Blinds shall be inside or outside mount, as per the approvedShop Drawings.

    4. Provide horizontal blinds of Type I (50 mm slats) or Type II (25 mm slats) asapproved by the Royal Commission.

    5. Tapes for Type I slats shall be longitudinal reinforced vinyl plastic in 1-pieceturn ladder construction.

    6. Tapes for Type II slats shall be braided polyester or nylon.

    B. Head Channel

    1. Head channel (headrail) shall be steel or aluminum, as approved, nominalthickness 0.46 mm for Type I and 0.61 mm for Type II slats, with corrosion-

    resistant finish.

    2. All hardware shall be enclosed in the headrail.

    C. Slats

    1. Slats shall be aluminum, not less than 0.203 mm thick, and of sufficientstrength to prevent sag or bow in the finished blind.

    2. A sufficient amount of slats shall be provided to assure proper control, uniformspacing, and adequate overlap.

    D. Intermediate Brackets

    1. Intermediate brackets shall be provided for installation of blinds over 1500 mmwide and shall be installed as recommended by the manufacturer.

    E. Bottom Rail

    1. Bottom rail shall be either of the following, as approved by the RoyalCommission:

    a) Steel, corrosion-resistant, with baked-on polyester paint, OR

    b) Extruded aluminum section in approved finish.

    2. The bottom rail shall be formed with a double-lock seam into a closed oval orrectangular shape for optimum strength. End caps shall be provided andmatch the rail in color.

    3. Color of bottom rail shall be coordinated with slats.

    F. Braided Ladders

    1. Ladders shall be braided of 100% polyester yarn of a color to match the slatcolor. Spacing of ladders shall be at a minimum 15.2 slats per 300 mm of dropand spaced in order to provide a uniform overlap of the slats in a closedposition.

    G. Controls

    1. The slats shall be tilted by a transparent tilting wand, hung vertically by its ownweight, and shall swivel for easy operation.

    2. The tilter control mechanism shall be of enclosed construction. Moving partsand mechanical drive shall be made of compatible materials which do notrequire lubrication during normal expected life. A mechanism shall be includedto prevent over tightening.

    3. The wand shall tilt the slats to any desired angle and hold them at that angleso that any vibration or movement of ladders and slats will not drive the wandand change the angle of slats.

    4. The wand shall be of sufficient length to reach to within 1500 mm of the floor.

    5. The blinds shall be lowered and raised by means of a beaded stainless steellooped chain cord, fitted with a tensioning device and a cord lock to hold theblinds at a desired height.

    6. Child Safety

    a) The Consumer Product Safety Commission (U.S.) requires the use of acord tie down (cord tensioner) on all continuous loop cord systems forshades and blinds. The use of such a device is intended to significantlyreduce the occurrence of infant or small child strangulation injuries ordeaths resulting from the looped pull cords on various window treatmentproducts.

    b) The Contractor shall mount the tensioning device (cord tensioner) in theproper position to pull the cord taut in order to reduce the possibility ofinjury.

    H. Hold-Down Brackets

    1. Provide hold-down brackets for sill or jamb mounting, when specified for blindsat windows where air movement may cause the blinds to sway excessively.

    I. Light Exclusion

    1. Horizontal blinds specified for audio-visual room applications shall include lighttraps at sides and sill.

    2. Light traps shall be constructed from aluminum or sheet steel, not less than0.5 mm thick, U-shaped with legs not less than 45 mm long for Type I blinds,and not less than 20 mm long for Type II blinds. Edges in contact with blindsshall be rounded or beaded.

    3. Finish inside surfaces of light traps in dull gray or black color.

    2.04 VERTICAL BLINDS

     A. General

    1. Vertical blinds shall typically be wall mounted with outside brackets. However,this typical mounting procedure may not be appropriate under certainconditions, such as ceiling mount, recess mount, etc. and the Contractor shallverify the locations prior to fabricating the blinds.

    2. The blinds shall be listed by the manufacturer as designed for heavy dutystrength applications including heavy duty hardware.

    3. Vertical blind units shall be capable of nominally 180° partial tilting operationand full stackback of louvers. Louvers shall be compact-design so as to have asmall stack.

    4. Vertical blinds shall be either ceiling or wall mounted with outside or inside

    brackets as specified.

    5. Outside mount type installation shall provide adequate overlap to control lightand privacy.

    6. Blinds shall be sill or floor length as shown on the Contract Drawings.

    7. Provide vertical blinds for sloped, arched and curved applications, as specified.

    B. Louvers

    1. Provide either of the following louver types, as specified and approved by theRoyal Commission:

    a) Solid Vinyl Louvers

    1) Solid, smooth, 100% lead free virgin vinyl, louvers shall be fireresistant, UV stable and impact resistant.

    2) The vane should have a nominal thickness of 0.7 mm, measuredat center of the vane, and be of high opacity so that there is no“pinking” when exposed to direct sunlight.

    3) All surfaces should be well treated with an anti-static agent.

    4) The PVC should meet or exceed the following test properties:

    (a) Hardness: Durometer “D” 75 to 90.

    (b) Hardness: Rockwell R 110 to 115.

    (c) Impact Strength: Izod 1.8 to 2.5.

    (d) Tensile Strength: 422 to 492 kg/cm2.

    5) Vinyl louvers shall hold their color when exposed to temperatures

    of 165 to 175°C in an air circulating oven.

    6) Louvers shall be provided with a bottom chain, or shall hangwithout a bottom chain, as approved.

    b) Fabric Louvers

    1) Fabric louvers shall be 100% polyester, flame retardant.

    2) Louvers shall have straight, flat, unfrayed edges and shall be flat,without noticeable twists.

    3) A weight shall be provided at the bottom of the louver. The insertshall not discolor the fabric.

    4) Louvers shall be provided with a bottom chain, or shall hangwithout a bottom chain, as approved.

    2. Louvers shall be either 89 mm wide or 50 mm wide, as specified.

    3. Louvers that are 89 mm shall overlap not less than 10 mm and louvers that are50 mm shall overlap not less than 6 mm. Louvers shall be dimensionallystable.

    C. Carriers

    1. Carriers shall be provided to support each louver. Carriers shall be of moldedplastic and shall transverse on self-lubricated wheels for smooth and easyoperation. Provide spring-loaded carriers that self-align with every use.

    2. The hook of the carrier shall have an automatic latch to permit easy installationand removal of the louver, and shall securely lock the louver for tilting andtraversing.

    D. Headrail System

    1. Headrail system shall be not less than 1.2 mm thick and shall be made ofanodized aluminum alloy, or 0.635 mm thick phosphate-treated steel, with abaked-on ivory gloss enamel paint finish.

    2. The headrail shall extend the full width of the blind and each end shall beclosed with an end cap. One cap shall contain the traversing and tilting

    controls. The opposite cap shall house the pulley for the traversing cord.

    E. Intermediate Brackets

    1. Intermediate installation brackets shall be furnished for blinds over 1500 mmwide.

    F. Valance

    1. Provide manufacturer’s standard valance, if specified in the ContractDrawings/Documents, attached to the headrail by metal or plastic holderswhich grip the top and bottom edge of the valance.

    2. There shall be sufficient clearance behind the valance to permit the louvers totilt without interference.

    3. Valance shall extend the full width of the blind and returns shall be providedwherever specified.

    G. Controls

    1. Control mechanisms shall generally be on the right side, but windowplacement may require the controls to be placed on the left side for ease ofoperation. The Contractor shall provide the direction of traverse of the verticalblind as per the approved Window Treatment Schedule.

    2. When deciding on the direction of traverse, due consideration shall be given toprovide adequate space for the width of the stack without concealing anyelectrical or mechanical components.

    3. Tilting control and traversing controls shall be unobtrusive, hang compactly atthe side of the blinds and shall reach within 1500 mm of the floor.

    4. The tilt/traverse control or bead chain tilting control, as approved, shall tilt allvanes simultaneously to any desired angle and hold them at that angle.

    5. The louvers shall traverse either one way to the right, or one way to the left, orin a two-way split, as shown on the approved Window Treatment Schedule.

    6. The traversing control cord shall be minimum 1.8 mm in diameter with aminimum breaking strength of 556 N. The cord shall be anchored to a lead

    carrier which shall be linked to all adjacent carriers.

    7. The louvers shall be traversed along the headrail either by pulling one side ofthe looped cord fastened to a cord tension pulley or a fiberglass wand shall tiltthe louvers by turning the wand and shall traverse the louvers by using thewand as a drapery control.

    8. Refer to par. 2.03 G.6 for child safety.

    H. Connectors and Spacers

    1. Connectors shall be flexible, smooth and flat to slide unhindered when carriersmove independently of each other, and to nest compactly when carriers are

    stacking.

    2. The length of the spacer links shall relate to the louver width in order to equallyspace the traversing louvers, to maintain uniform and adequate overlap oflouvers, and to fully cover the width of the opening.

    2.05 WINDOW SHADES

     A. General

    1. Provide manually operated, vertical roll-up, window shade with chain andclutch operating mechanism, and extruded aluminum housing includingbrackets, fasteners, and other components necessary for complete installation,OR

    2. Electrically operated, motorized vertical roll-up, window shade with motors,controls, and extruded aluminum housing to be recessed in ceiling, includingbrackets, fasteners, and other components necessary for complete installation.

    3. Provide dual roller window shade wherever specified, wherein unit shall bedesigned to accommodate 2 types of fabric shade, each on a separate roller.

    4. All steel features shall be treated for corrosion resistance.

    B. Mounting

    1. Provide units for either of the following types of mounting:

    a) Recessed in ceiling and surface mounted to wall with screws.

    b) Recessed in ceiling and surface mounted to structural ceiling supportwith screws.

    c) Recessed in ceiling suspended from structure with suspension rods andbrackets.

    2. Provide manufacturer’s standard brackets for each type of mount.

    C. Housing Case (Head Box)

    1. Rectangular enclosure for roller(s) shall be fabricated from extruded aluminum

    6063-T5 alloy, with epoxy powder-coated finish and stamped steel end caps.

    2. Housing case shall be capable of being installed separately from shade as partof ceiling system installation. Shade and operating mechanism shall be siteinstalled later after construction operations that might damage shade arecomplete.

    3. The exposed face of the head box shall be hinged or removable for access tothe shade roller.

    4. Recessed housing shall be equipped with a flange to provide support and trimfor acoustical ceiling panels and for gypsum board ceiling.

    5. A hidden brush built into the fascia panel shall clean the shade as it is raisedor lowered.

    D. Rollers

    1. Rollers shall be fabricated from extruded aluminum, 6063-T5 alloy, galvanizedsteel, or enameled steel.

    2. Operation mechanism of rollers shall be of the type as speci fied in par. 2.05Fbelow.

    3. Diameter, wall thickness, and material of roller tube shall be selected bymanufacturer to accommodate shade type and size and to prevent excessivedeflection. Roller tube shall operate smoothly.

    4. Provide with roller idler assembly of molded nylon and zinc-plated steel pin.

    E. Shades

    1. Shade cloth shall comply with NFPA 701.

    2. Provide roller window shades, Roman shades, or cellular (honeycomb)shades, as specified.

    3. Furnish shade cloth in lengths not less than 300 mm longer than actualwindow dimension (height) to permit shade to be operated full length withouttearing from roller.

    4. Provide the following type of shades, as specified in the Contract Drawings/Documents:

    a) Light Filtering Shades

    1) Provide approved translucent light filtering shades to softlydiffuse light.

    2) Different densities of light-filtering fabric (3, 5, 10% openness, as

    specified) shall be provided to handle the building's different sunintensities, while maintaining a consistent look and light factorwithin the interior.

    b) Room Darkening Shades

    1) Provide opaque room darkening, opaque (black-out) shades toblock out light (95 to 98% blackout), for specified locations suchas audio-visual applications.

    2) Room darkening shades shall be made of a vinyl laminatedfiberglass or canvas duck cloth, as approved. When not finishedwith a selvage, the vertical edges of the shade shall be bound orhemmed using a high-grade thread. Needle holes shall be madelight-proof by applying suitable filler.

    c) Roman shades shall be fabricated out of approved fabric, with 250 mmpanels which stack evenly as the shade is operated.

    d) Cellular shades shall be with double honeycomb cell construction to trapair in the cells, increasing the insulation value of the shades. Fabric shallbe 0.14 mm thick, flame retardant, non-fading, 30 g/m

    2 for light filtering

    cellular shades and 40 g/m2 for room darkening cellular shades.

    e) Provide a fabric valance wherever specified in the approved WindowTreatment Schedule.

    F. Operation

    1. Both front and rear rollers, in case of dual roller shades shall have the sametype of operation.

    2. Provide units with operating types as approved, out of the following:

    a) Chain and Clutch Operation

    1) Provide beaded chain pull cord(s) and clutch operatingmechanism allowing shade to stop when chain is released.

     Assembly shall never need adjustment or lubrication. Providepreset limit stops to prevent shade from being raised or loweredtoo far.

    2) Provide pull cords made of No. 4 braided nylon or stainless steelbeaded chain, as approved and on side of window as indicated,having breaking strength not less than 335 N. For dual rollershades, pull cord for one roller shall be on right side and that forother roller on the left side.

    3) Clutch mechanism shall be fabricated from high carbon steel andmolded fiberglass reinforced polyester.

    b) Crank Operation

    1) Provide crank and gear box to operate shades.

    2) Gear box shall be die cast aluminum and steel construction with3 to 1 ratio. Injection molded nylon and steel crank insert shall be

    installed in roller to engage gear box.

    3) Provide detachable or permanently mounted crank handle inanodized aluminum with chrome plated steel handle.

    4) Crank location shall be as indicated on the approved Shop

    Drawings or window shade schedule.

    c) Electric Motor Operation

    1) Tubular motors shall be 110 V AC, single-phase, 60 Hz, instantlyreversible, permanently lubricated, and equipped with internalthermal overload protector, electric brake, pre-set accessible limitswitches and infinite stop positions.

    2) Motor shall be capable of operating the specified shade type andsize.

    3) Motorized window shades shall feature a quiet electronic drive forsilent operation, with a noise limit of 44 dBA at 1 m distance fromthe shades.

    4) Provide a hand-held infrared transmitter or corded controllerattached adjacent to the shades, as specified, for operation ofshades.

    3. Refer to par. 2.03 G.6 for child safety.

    G. Coupling System

    1. Provide system to operate more than 1 shade from single crank or motor bycoupling shade rollers together. System shall consist of bearing brackets andmale and female couplings.

    H. Light Exclusion

    1. When an opaque window shade fabric is selected for the rear roller, side andsill channels (light traps) shall be provided to prevent light leakage and providetotal blackout.

    2. Side and sill channels shall be fabricated from U-shaped, extruded, anodizedaluminum sections, and shall be provided with means to guide and retainfabric. Sill channel shall receive shade bottom slat bar and prevent lightleakage.

    3. The legs of the channel shall not be less than 45 mm long and shall beseparated by the minimum distance that will permit free operation of theshade. Edges of light trap coming into contact with the shade cloth shall be

    smooth pile light seal. The interior or unexposed surfaces of the light trap shallhave a finish coat of flat black enamel.

    I. Bottom Slat

    1. Bottom slat shall be minimum 3 x 25 mm aluminum slat encased in heatseamed hem.

    2. Shades will engage positively to the sill channel through the bottom slat.

    2.06 WINDOW DRAPERY

     A. General

    1. Provide single or dual fabric drapery system as specified in the Contract

    Drawings/Documents.

    2. In case of dual fabric drapery system, provide the approved translucent glarecontrol fabric on the inner face and a room darkening shade on the rear, or asspecified.

    3. All patterned drapery widths shall be pattern matched starting at the bottom.

    B. Drapery Hardware

    1. Provide heavy-duty, stationary or traverse wall-mounted rods or ceiling-mounted tracks, as specified.

    2. When traverse rods or tracks are specified, provide as per the approvedWindow Treatment Schedule one-way or two-way draw mechanism, and whenone-way, provide either left-to-right or right-to-left draw as specified.

    3. Rods and tracks shall be cold-rolled, commercial quality steel minimum0.42 mm thick or extruded aluminum minimum 1.27 mm thick.

    4. Rod and track cross section width and depth shall be sufficient to carry thedrapery without sagging.

    5. Track configuration (number of channels) shall be such so as to permit draperyoperation as specified.

    6. Finish steel components with manufacturer’s standard white baked enamel, orvinyl, or epoxy coating as approved. Finish aluminum components withmanufacturer’s standard anodized coating, or a baked enamel, vinyl, or epoxycoating as approved.

    7. Tracks and rods shall be smooth and with non-sticking sliding surfaces.

    8. Provide 1-piece rod and track up to 4800 mm long. Provide manufacturer’sstandard steel brackets and intermediate supports.

    9. Provide one manufacturer's design throughout.

    10. Track Sets

    a) For stationary draperies, track set shall include ceiling track, sliding orrolling carriers, and caps for stationary draperies.

    b) For traverse draperies, track set shall include ceiling track, sliding orrolling carriers, master sliding or rolling carriers, ball bearing end pulleys,and traverse cord with tasseled cord or tension pulleys, as specified.

    c) Motor, in case of motorized track set, shall be capable of operating the

    specified drapery type and size. Provide motor with a quiet electronicdrive for silent operation with a noise limit of 44 dBA at 1 m distancefrom the shades. Provide a hand-held infrared transmitter or cordedcontroller attached adjacent to the drapery, as specified, for draperycontrol.

    11. Rod Sets

    a) For stationary draperies, rod sets shall include wall-hung rod, sliding orrolling carriers, brackets, and intermediate supports with 65 to 90 mmprojection.

    b) For traverse draperies, rod sets shall include wall-hung rod, sliding orrolling carriers, master sliding or rolling carriers, ball bearing end pulleys,brackets, intermediate supports with 65 to 90 mm projection, andtraverse cord with tasseled cord or tension pulleys, as specified.

    12. Traverse Cord

    a) For traverse drapery, draw cords shall be size No. 4 with fiberglass core.Provide tasseled cord with lead weight center and plastic coating, ortension pulley of metal tube or plastic housing type, with mountingbracket, helical spring and ball bearing pulley wheel.

    b) Color shall be white or off-white.

    13. Hand Traverse Cordless Track System

    a) Provide heavy duty track assembly with baton on room-side of draperieswhere it is readily visible and easily used. Provide extruded, anodizedaluminum ceiling-mounted or side-wall mounted track in approved finish.

    14. Snap-Tape System Track

    a) Dovetail slots in clear folding linkage. Carriers shall be 1-piece moldedplastic snap tab type to mate with snap-on components sewn to draperyheading.

    15. Fasteners

    a) All fasteners shall be zinc or cadmium plated.

    2.07 WINDOW (SOLAR CONTROL) FILM

     A. The Contractor shall provide the product comprising a high-tech laminate ofpolyethylene terepthalate (polyester) and sputtered metallized coatings bonded bydistortion-free adhesives to achieve the desired performance and aestheticcharacteristics.

    B. The solar control film shall be designed to deal with the individual electromagneticwavelengths of the sun's energy in such a manner as to curb heat passing throughthe glass (infrared), control light transmission and eliminate ultraviolet radiation.

    C. The finished film shall include a coating to reduce the effects of scratching andabrasions that occur in normal daily activity.

    D. Provide solar control film with the approved visible light transmission, solar energytransmission and rejection, shading coefficient, ‘U’ factor, UV rejection percentage

    and solar heat gain coefficient, as specified by the Royal Commission.

    E. Provide low-emissivity film at locations specified on the ContractDrawings/Documents.

    F. Solar control film shall provide percentage of visibility as approved by the RoyalCommission for given application, both during day and night times. Films shall have ascratch-free, non-reflective interior face to enhance visibility to the outside duringnight time.

    G. Adhesive system shall offer distortion-free views through the glass.

    2.08 FINISHES

     A. All hardware shall be fully color coordinated for the most attractive decorativeappearance. Shades shall be of a uniform color to the exterior to maintain theappearance of the buildings regardless of color choices.

    B. Color, texture and finish of steel and aluminum components, and of blind slats, shadeand drapery material shall be as approved by the Royal Commission and inaccordance with the Window Treatment Schedule.

    PART 3 EXECUTION

    3.01 WINDOW TREATMENT SCHEDULE

     A. Placement of all window treatments shall be included in the Window Treatment

    Schedule.

    B. The Contractor shall prepare and submit to the Royal Commission for approval, awindow treatment schedule as per the format given below.

    C. The Window Treatment Schedule shall be completely filled out by the Contractor withthe room number/name, window covering type, drapery draw type and direction,window type and quantity.

    D. Identification

    1. A numbering plan shall be formulated for projects requiring large quantities ofwindow treatments or a variety of window treatment types.

    2. In accordance with the numbering plan, each opening and the corresponding

    window treatment shall be marked with identical numbers. For multiplewindows separated by mullions, the space required by each blind shall benumbered separately. Use brass, aluminum, plastic, durable paper plates, orstamp to place corresponding numbers on unexposed surfaces of openingsand inside or on top of the headrail track.

    3.02 COORDINATION

     A. The Contractor shall coordinate with other relevant sections as required to ensureproper and adequate provision in structure and wall finish for installation of thewindow treatment in the required locations.

    3.03 EXAMINATION

     A. The Contractor shall:

    1. Prior to installation, inspect location of all accessories and verify that allnecessary provisions have been made.

    2. Examine all surfaces to receive the parts of the work specified herein.

    3. Verify that painting of wall surfaces is completed prior to commencement ofwork of this Section.

    4. Avoid proceeding in areas of discrepancies until they have been resolved anduntil unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

    B. Installation of products shall constitute acceptance of the related construction.

    3.04 PREPARATION

     A. Field verify window dimensions prior to fabrication.

    B. Coordinate requirements for blocking and structural supports to ensure adequatemeans for installation of window treatment.

    C. Coordinate installation of recessed housings with construction of suspendedacoustical panel ceilings and gypsum board ceilings.

    D. Coordinate requirements for power supply, conduit, and wiring required for windowshade motors and controls.

    E. If controls for the shades are to be interfaced with HVAC and lighting system,coordinate interface and installation of window shades with provision of HVACsystem and lighting system.

    F. Prior to installation of motorized shades, verify type and location of power supply.

    3.05 INSTALLATION

     A. General

    1. Install window treatment at locations indicated on drawings and approvedWindow Treatment Schedule.

    2. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions and approved Shop Drawings.

    3. Installation shall not be initiated until completion of room painting and finishingoperations.

    B. Housing and Headrail

    1. Install housing and headrail prior to or in conjunction with installation of

    suspended ceiling system, as required. Attach to supporting structure withscrews at 600 mm minimum centers.

    2. Connect housing junction box to power supply for motorized blinds andshades.

    3. After interior construction is essentially complete, install blinds, shades andoperating mechanism in housing pocket. Plug-in motors to housing junctionbox.

    C. Slats, Louvers and Shades

    1. Position slats, louvers and shades level, plumb, secure, and at proper heightrelative to window units and adjacent window treatment. Secure with bracketsand fasteners recommended by manufacturer.

    2. The Contractor shall furnish and install supplementary or miscellaneous itemsin total, including clips, brackets, or anchorages incidental to or necessary for asound, secure, and complete installation.

    D. Drapery Hardware

    1. Install in accordance with the manufacturer's printed instructions, and asspecified herein.

    2. Install ceiling tracks parallel to walls and windows, fasten at each end, at400 mm from each end and with additional intermediate fasteners spaced notmore than 1200 mm apart.

    3. Install wall rods with end brackets and provide intermediate support brackets600 mm from each end with additional intermediate support brackets spacednot more than 1200 mm apart.

    E. Solar Control Film

    1. Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation)within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not installproducts under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolutelimits.

    2. Manufacturer’s highly trained and skilled installers shall carry out the actualinstallation work.

    3. Review instructions from the glass manufacturer and glazing system designerregarding suitability of solar control film application. The review shall includespecific glazing conditions which exist on the project such as shadowconditions on the glass, thermal isolation of the glass in the glazing channel,the amount of cover on the glass edge, placement of blinds or drapes, andquality of edgework on the existing glass.

    4. In general, solar control films or coatings shall not be field applied to annealed,single glazed, solar control glass because of the increased risk of thermalfailure. The use of such films must be reviewed for thermal stress andbreakage risk before application.

    5. Verify that film is not cracked, chipped, broken or damaged.

    6. Glass surface shall be thoroughly cleaned prior to installation of the solarcontrol film. Do not begin installation until substrates have been properlyprepared.

    7. Film edges and corners shall be overlapped by the gasket or frame rebate,wherever practicable.

    8. Film shall perfectly match the dimensions of the glass to be covered and allfilm edges shall match the glass edges. Special care shall be taken for retro-fitworks where existing glazing has to be covered. In such cases, an allowanceshall be made for the dimensions, and the extra film trimmed after adhesion iscomplete.

    9. Film shall be adhesive-applied as per the manufacturer’s recommendedprocedure.

    10. Finished installation shall be free of trapped dirt and air bubbles, ripples,creases, drips, cuts, tears, variations in visibility, non-uniform adhesive spread,partial non-adhered areas and gaps between film and frame.

    3.06 TESTING AND DEMONSTRATION

     A. Operate blinds and shades through complete cycle of lowering, stopping and raisingto ensure proper operation.

    B. Verify that motor controls, limit switches, and interface to other building systems arefunctional.

    C. Correct deficiencies and adjust for smooth operation.

    D. Demonstrate operation of shades to the Royal Commission's designatedrepresentatives.

    3.07 ADJUSTING

     A. Upon completion of the installation, adjust window treatments for form andappearance.

    B. Ensure window treatments are in proper operating condition, free from soiling,damage or blemishes. Damaged units shall be repaired or replaced by the Contractoras directed by the Royal Commission.

    C. Isolate metal parts from direct contact with concrete, mortar, or dissimilar metals.

    D. Ensure blinds and shades installed in recessed pockets can be removable withoutdisturbing the pocket. The entire blind or shade, when retracted, shall be containedbehind the pocket.

    E. For blinds and shades installed outside the jambs and mullions, ensure overlap oneach jamb and mullion by 20 mm or more when the jamb and mullion sizes permit.Include all hardware, brackets, anchors, fasteners, and accessories necessary for acomplete, finished installation.

    3.08 CLEAN-UP AND PROTECTION

     A. Clean shade assemblies and protect from damage from construction operations.

    B. If damage occurs, remove and replace damaged components or entire unit asrequired to provide units in their original, undamaged condition.

    C. Clean soiled shade surfaces and components only as recommended by themanufacturer. Do not use steam, hot water, bleach or any abrasive or solvent based

    cleaners for cleaning.
