BRUNO STAGNO

THROUGH HIS DESIGN WORK, RESEARCH AND LEADERSHIP, BRUNO STAGNO HAS CHAMPIONED THE CAUSE OF A REGIONAL SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE IN THE TROPICS BY CRAFTING BUILDINGS WITH A SENSE OF PLACE, HUMAN SCALE, AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY.

Bruno Stagno is recognized, in and outside Latin America, as one of the leading figures in the field of sustainable architecture. His designs constitute built lessons on the seamless integration of green architecture practices as an integral component of building design. His major contributions include the following:

Building bridges between practice and theory through sustainable design Bruno Stagno’s architectural designs are anchored by a comprehensive research and analysis of the regional tropi-cal context in which he works. Inspired by the lessons of how vernacular architecture responds to the challenges of the tropical climate, Stagno has developed an architectural vocabulary that privileges common-sense design over expensive engineering technology as a means of making sustainable architectural design accessible in third world developing countries.

Constructing new architectural paradigms for sustainability in office and commercial buildingsIn projects like the Holcim Corporate Headquarters and the BATCCA Office Building or in commercial buildings like the BAC Bank Branches, Stagno has created new paradigms and models of how sustainable design strategies can be incorporated in traditionally closed, mechanically ventilated and lit building types. Designed using natural ven-tilation, lighting, response to topography, and the incorporation of native vegetation as a design element, these buildings serve as exemplary models of environmentally responsive design.

Setting new standards for sustainable design in the tropicsA major contribution of Stagno’s design and research work has been the development of measurable standards for certification of sustainable buildings outside temperate climates and specifically for the tropical region. The RESET standard developed by Stagno, has been adopted in Costa Rica as the official standard for sustainable build-ings, and at the international level by the International Union of Architects as a reference standard for sustainable design in tropical regions worldwide.

Redefining the nature of sustainable architecture as an essential component of people’s quality of lifeDuring the past twenty years Stagno has established a large body of work whose quality has been recognized with over twenty international and national awards for design excellence. This excellence in design, stems from his be-lief and commitment to the role of sustainable architecture as an integral part of people’s quality of life, and as a vital component in the future of our cities and towns.

Leadership in the profession Through his design, writings, exhibitions, lectures, and teaching, Bruno Stagno’s leadership has made significant contributions in extending knowledge of the profession to a larger public. As Director of the Instituto de Arquitec-tura Tropical, Stagno has sponsored, directed and participated in public education projects for a broad range of audiences always putting forward the importance of sustainable architecture as an ethical stance and the values and role of architecture in society.

Project: BANCO BAC SAN JOSÉ - CURRIDABAT BRANCH, San José, Costa Rica

Architecture Firm of Record: Bruno Stagno Arquitecto & AsociadosDesign Firm: Bruno Stagno Arquitecto & AsociadosCompletion date: 1995Role of Nominee: Designer and Principal Architect

Synopsis

The branch for Banco de América Central BAC San José in Curridabat was designed to define a corporate architecture for this regional, newly established bank. The property has a steep slope and a 140-meter front-age to a four-lane national highway. The building’s architecture is expressed by a combination of cascading roofs that descend the hill, and a great pleated roof structure that orbits to the left and right. This resulted in a prominent roof with horizontal pleats that showcase the adaptation of the building to the terrain’s topography. The roof acts as protection against the rain and sun, and provides shade to the windows. In response to the tropical climate, the long eaves are over-hanging and surpass the glass walls. The roof’s pleats—facing north—have strategically-located entry points for natural light, providing a homogenous and controlled illumination.

Architecture Firm of Record: Bruno Stagno Arquitecto & AsociadosDesign Firm: Bruno Stagno Arquitecto & AsociadosCompletion date: 1997 / 2014Role of Nominee: Designer and Principal Architect

Synopsis

Although there is a recognizable architectural vocabulary that was established for the very first branch office designed for BAC (Exhibit 1), the seven bank branches are different while sharing common elements and design strategies. The roofs, the transparency between interior and exterior, the mixed block-and-brick-type masonry walls, and the plant-inspired structures, are all part of a signature architecture that has given BAC its identity. The roof is the main element that distinguishes the architecture for both the original phase built in 1997 and the new 2014 extension. In this branch, a second roof is superimposed on the roof that covers the main volume, slightly rotated on its axis. The unique shape of this roof prevents the visual flight of the horizontal field toward the ends of this long and narrow building. At the same time, it covers the ramp’s cascading roofs that ascend parallel to the sidewalk. In the mornings, time of maximum in-flux of visitors, the large eaves that cover the façade protect from the sun’s rays and produce a pleasant inner clarity with a controlled and cool light. The plant-covered walls of the business center generate a unique ambiance in its in-terior space, contribute vegetation to the city, and reduce the heat island surrounding the building. The project repre-sents our on-going concern for energy savings and sustainability in tropical climates. The second stage of this project was awarded the RESET National Standards Certification (Requirements for Sustainable Buildings in the Tropics).

Project: HOLCIM CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS, San Rafael, Alajuela, Costa Rica

Architecture Firm of Record: Bruno Stagno Arquitecto & AsociadosDesign Firm: Bruno Stagno Arquitecto & AsociadosCompletion date: 2004Role of Nominee: Designer and Principal Architect

Synopsis

The challenge in this project was to transform a large, 14 hectare degraded, and rocky industrial complex into a welcoming, small-scale sustainable workplace. The building is organized around a vegetated central courtyard that serves as the ‘lungs’ of the project as well as a focal point of the design. In the area surrounding the building, 500 new indigenous species trees were added to create a green belt to cool the building exterior. To lower the am-bient temperature, façades were designed to include elements such as louvers, sunscreens, grilles, eaves, and canvas canopies, to create a new comfort driven microclimate. The new building, designed without air condition-ing, except for the auditorium, constitutes a new paradigm for the design of office buildings in the tropics.

Project: BATCCA CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS, San Joaquín de las Flores, Alajuela, Costa Rica

Architecture Firm of Record: Bruno Stagno Arquitecto & AsociadosDesign Firm: Bruno Stagno Arquitecto & AsociadosCompletion date: 2007Role of Nominee: Designer and Principal Architect

Synopsis

In the project brief we were charged with the challenge to create “a great place to work,” in other words, a singular and attractive workplace. As a second requirement, the building should motivate teamwork and should convince any potential new employee to work at BATCCA. As a design strategy, we crafted an architecture that seeks to eliminate physical barriers between users, promotes visual relations, combines work and leisure, supports social interaction, and facilitates the contact with nature and fresh air. The project incorporates several layers of ‘building skin’ – trees, a sun visor on the roof and a succession of overhanging eaves facing the windows – which serve as a natural passive strategy to reduce humidity and lower the interior temperature of the building. Windows are manu-ally operated, giving the users the option of fresh air instead of air conditioning. Architectural design strategies used in the building have played a key role in energy savings including the use of less expensive and lower maintenance air conditioning systems, reduced energy cost through the use of LED lighting technology, the construction of a deep well for potable water, and of a waste water treatment plant, which reuses its effluent for garden irrigation.

Project: LE PARC APARTMENT BUILDING, San José, Costa Rica

Architecture Firm of Record: Bruno Stagno Arquitecto & AsociadosDesign Firm: Bruno Stagno Arquitecto & AsociadosCompletion date: 2009Role of Nominee: Designer and Principal Architect

Synopsis

This 12-story building was constructed in a residential neighborhood in San Jose, in a small plot of land mea-suring under 800 square meters. The design is based on the idea that each owner should be able to customize the floor layout according to their needs and locate the bathrooms, kitchen, electric installation and air condition-ing accordingly. The design uses a double crawl space, a tropical version of Kahn’s serve and served spaces. For the outer walls we used prefabricated exposed concrete panels developed with special formwork made out of galvanized iron sheets. This cost-effective solution yields particular textures on the surfaces which articulate the building’s façades creating a play of light and shadow. Part of the challenge of the project was to reconcile the spectacular views of the mountains with the solar radiation on the façades. Each apartment boasts a 360° view of the mountains, as well as a close-up view of the nearby park. For cross ventilation, the façades are fitted with casement windows to obtain the required inflow of breeze. The project also included collective solar water heaters, with an internal network that distributes hot water to each apartment. Also, each apartment has three garbage classifying ducts for recycling. The parking basement is ventilated and naturally lit during the day, and the surrounding gardens make this well-lit area pleasant to residents. The solarium terrace, with several flower-clad planters and shrubs, as well as three medium-size trees, creates a collective leisure space for the residents.

Project: MONASTERY OF THE VIRGIN OF THE ANNUNCIATION, Alajuela, Costa Rica

Architecture Firm of Record: Bruno Stagno Arquitecto & AsociadosDesign Firm: Bruno Stagno Arquitecto & AsociadosCompletion date: 2012Role of Nominee: Designer and Principal Architect

Synopsis

The Monastery of the Virgin of the Annunciation was designed in a property of over 2 hectares, for a community of twelve cloistered sisters. Understanding what it means to live a life within a cloistered monastery, with its discipline and rigor, obedience and devotion, constituted an indispensable pre-design stage. Silence and austerity were key words in trying to envisage architectural spaces to faithfully reflect and embrace this unique way of life. The project’s program consists of the design of 12 rooms, a library, kitchen and dining room a study and a chapel. The functional requirements for the rooms were basic: small 7 square meter rooms where, in lieu of a closet, four hooks on the wall would suffice. The building utilizes a double skin made of steel with cement siding made with recycled cellulose. The building uses natural light and ventilation throughout. While most of the complex is open to the overwhelming landscape of the mountains, the chapel, an austere place for retreat and prayer, is bathed by filtered light from the skylight above.
