SECTION 096700 - FLUID-APPLIED FLOORING

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Furnish necessary material, labor, and equipment required to prepare designatedareas and install a Decorative Mosaic Coating System.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

C. Samples: Submit two samples, 6 by 6 inch in size illustrating color and pattern foreach floor material for each color specified.

D. Concrete Subfloor Test Report: Submit a copy of the moisture and alkalinity (pH) testreports.

E. Manufacturer's Installation Instructions: Indicate special procedures.

F. Manufacturer's Qualification Statement.

G. Applicator's Qualification Statement.

H. Maintenance Data: Include maintenance procedures, recommended maintenancematerials, procedures for stain removal, repairing surface, and suggested schedulefor cleaning.

I. Maintenance Materials: Furnish the following for Indianapolis Public TransportationCorporation's use in maintenance of project.

1. See Section 016000 - Product Requirements, for additional provisions.

2. Extra Top Coat Materials: 2 gallons.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturer Qualifications: Obtain Decorative Mosaic Coating System materialsfrom a single manufacturer with a minimum of ten (10) years verifiable experienceproviding materials of the type specified in this section.

B. Applicator Qualifications: Company specializing in performing the work of thissection.

1. Minimum 5 years of documented experience .

2. Approved by manufacturer.

1.6 MOCK-UP

A. Construct mock-up(s) of fluid applied flooring to serve as basis for evaluation oftexture and workmanship.

1. Number of Mock-Ups to be Prepared: One.

2. Use same materials and methods for use in the work.

3. Locate where directed.

4. Minimum Size: 48 inches by 48 inches .

B. See Section 014000 - Quality Requirements for additional requirements.

C. Obtain approval of mock-up by Architect / Engineer before proceeding with work.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Primary system materials shall be delivered in the manufacturer's undamaged,unopened containers. Each container shall be clearly marked with the following:

1. Product name(s) and/or Number(s)

2. Manufacturer's name

3. Component designation (A, B, etc.)

4. Product Mix Ratio

5. Health and Safety Information

6. CHEMTREC Emergency Response Information

B. Provide equipment and personnel to handle the materials by methods which preventdamage.

C. The contractor shall promptly inspect direct jobsite material deliveries to assure thatquantities are correct, comply with requirements and are not damaged.

D. The contractor shall be responsible for materials furnished by him, and he shallreplace, at his own expense, such materials that are found to be defective inmanufacture or that have become damaged in transit, handling or storage.

E. Store materials for three days prior to installation in area of installation to achievetemperature stability.

F. Store material(s) in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, with seals andlabels intact and legible. Maintain temperatures within the required range. Do not usematerials which exceed the manufacturer's maximum recommended shelf life.

1.8 FIELD CONDITIONS

A. The contractor shall visit the jobsite prior to the installation of the Decorative MosaicEpoxy Coating System to evaluate substrate condition, including substrate moisturetransmission, quantity and severity of cracking, and the extent of repairs needed.Substrate imperfections should be repaired only after mechanical preparation of thesubstrate. Surface preparation reveals most imperfections requiring repair. Concretesubstrates shall be tested to verify that the moisture vapor transmission of thesubstrate does not exceed the Decorative Mosaic Epoxy Coating Systemmanufacturers' recommendations.  Cost associated with repair, leveling andremediation of the substrate are the responsibility of the provider of the substrate.

B. The contractor should exercise care during surface preparation and systeminstallation to protect surrounding substrates and surfaces, as well as in-placeequipment. The contractor shall prepare the substrate to remove laitance and openthe surface. This shall be achieved by light brush grit blasting. Surface profileachieved shall be similar to medium grit sandpaper and free from bond-inhibitingcontaminants. Costs incurred that are associated with damage from negligence orinadequate protection shall be the sole responsibility of the contractor.

C. Sub floor tolerances are specified in Section 033000 (in accordance with ACI 302).Toleraces shall not exceed 1/8-inch in 10-feet. Each drain in the installation areamust be working and raised or lowered to the actual finished elevation of theDecorative Mosaic Epoxy Coating System.

D. The minimum slab temperature must be conditioned to 60 degrees F beforecommencing installation, during installation, and for at least 72 hours after installationis complete.  The substrate temperature must be at least 5 degrees F above the dewpoint during installation.

E. Maintain lighting at a minimum uniform level of 50 or more foot candles in areaswhere the Decorative Mosaic Epoxy Coating System is being installed. It is therecommendation of the manufacturer that the permanent lighting be in place andworking during the installation.

F. Store materials in area of installation for minimum period of 24 hours prior toinstallation.

G. Maintain ambient temperature required by manufacturer 72 hours prior to, during,and 24 hours after installation of materials.

1.9 WARRANTY

A. The contractor and the manufacturer shall furnish a standard guarantee of theDecorative Mosaic Coating System for a period of one year after installation. Thelabor and material guarantee shall include loss of bond and wear-through to theconcrete substrate from normal use.

B. Not included in the warranty are damage due to structural design deficienciesincluding but not limited to slab cracking from lateral, vertical or rotational movement,and gouging or other damage due to fork lifts, other equipment, or other elementsbeyond the scope of protection of this system nor causes not related to the systemmaterials.

C. In case of a warranty claim, the owner will notify the manufacturer and contractor inwriting within 30 days of the first appearance of problems covered under thiswarranty. The owner will provide free and unencumbered access to the area duringnormal working hours for warranty rework. Property protection is also the owner'sresponsibility. Remedy is limited to direct repair of the Decorative Mosaic CoatingSystem.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS (BASIS-OF-DESIGN SYSTEM)

A. System Overview: The General Polymers Decorative Mosaic Epoxy Coating Systemwith Resuprime and GP 4850 as manufactured by Sherwin-Williams consists of  GP3830 Resuprime Moisture Mitigation Primer, GP 3746 Self-Leveling Epoxy as basecoat with 6750/6755 Decorative Vinyl Chip Aggregate and GP4850 Polyaspartic SS.

B. Physical Properties:

1. Color: Custom blend to match colors on Room Finish Legend.

2. Abrasion Resistance: 100 mgs lost (ASTM D 4060, CS-17 wheel, 1000 cycles.

3. Flexural Strength: 10,000 psi, ASTM C 580.

4. Adhesion: 300 psi, ACI 503R.

5. Flammability: Self-extinguishing over concrete.

6. Impact Resistance: MIL-D-3134J, direct, inch pound greater that 160, passesreverse, inch pound greater that 80, passes.

7. Resistance Elevated Temperatures: MIL-D-3134J, No slip or flow at requiredtemperature of 158 degrees F.

C. Subject to compliance with requirements provide an equivalent product by one of thefollowing:

2.2 FLUID-APPLIED FLOORING SYSTEMS

A. Fluid-Applied Flooring: Epoxy base coat(s), with broadcast aggregate.

1. Aggregate: Quartz granules.

2. Texture: Slip resistant .

3. Sheen: Semi-Gloss .

4. Color: As selected by Architect / Engineer.

2.3 ACCESSORIES

A. Base Caps: Zinc with projecting base of 1/8 inch ; mill finish color .

B. Subfloor Filler: Type recommended by fluid-applied flooring manufacturer.

C. Primer: Type recommended by fluid-applied flooring manufacturer.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify that subfloor surfaces are smooth and flat within the tolerances specified forthat type of work and are ready to receive flooring.

B. Verify that wall surfaces are smooth and flat within the tolerances specified for thattype of work, are dust-free, and are ready to receive flooring.

C. Verify that subfloor surfaces are dust-free and free of substances that could impairbonding of materials to subfloor surfaces.

D. Cementitious Subfloor Surfaces: Verify that substrates are ready for fluid-appliedflooring installation by testing for moisture and alkalinity (pH).

1. Test as Follows:

a. Alkalinity (pH): ASTM F710.

b. Internal Relative Humidity: ASTM F2170.

c. Moisture Vapor Emission: ASTM F1869.

2. Obtain instructions if test results are not within limits recommended by fluid-applied flooring manufacturer.

E. Verify that required floor-mounted utilities are in correct location.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Moisture Testing: For thorough instructions regarding moisture testing of concretesubstrates "Instruction for Concrete Surface Preparation" (Form G-1).https://www.generalpolymers.com/drop/conc_surf_prep.pdf or other manufacturers

equivilent.

B. Remove subfloor ridges and bumps. Fill low spots, cracks, joints, holes, and otherdefects with subfloor filler.

C. Prepare concrete surfaces according to ICRI 310.2R , and manufacturers instructionsand recommendations .

D. Apply, trowel, and float filler to achieve smooth, flat, hard surface. Grind irregularitiesabove the surface level. Prohibit traffic until filler is cured.

E. Vacuum clean substrate.

F. Apply primer to surface in compliance with manufacturers instructions.

3.3 INSTALLATION - ACCESSORIES

A. Install terminating cap strip at top of base; attach securely to wall substrate.

3.4 INSTALLATION - FLOORING

A. Apply each component of the Decorative Mosaic Epoxy Coating System incompliance with manufacturer's written installation instructions and strictly adhere tomixing and installation methods, recoat windows, cure times and environmentalrestrictions. The Decorative Mosaic Epoxy Coating System is to be installed directlyover non-moving control joints and cracks which have been treated withmanufacturers flexible epoxy treatment, and the Decorative Mosaic Epoxy CoatingSystem will terminate at the edge of isolation and expansion joints as designated bythe Architect, Engineer or Design Professional. Integral cove base shall be installedwhere specified in the drawings.

B. Cracks: After preparation, evaluation of quantity and severity of cracks in concretewill determine the needed repairs. Original bid assumes repair and treatment ofcracks and control joints. For information pertaining to the treatment of cracks inconcrete substrates, consult manufacturer’s publications for crack treatment.

C. Control Joints: Original bid assumes repair and treatment of cracks and control jointsFor information pertaining to the treatment of control joints in concrete substrates,consult manufacturer’s publications for control joint treatment.

D. Isolation Joints / Expansion Joints: All expansion joints must be honored through theflooring system.

E. System Primer (Basis-of-Design): GP 3830 Resuprime Moisture Mitigation Primer.Provide primer approved by manufacturer for application indicated.

F. Base Coat (Basis-of-Design): GP 3746 Self-leveling epoxy.

G. Chip Broadcast (Basis-of-Design): 6750/6755 Decorative Vinyl Chip Aggregate.

H. Grout Coat (Basis-of-Design): GP4850 Polyaspartic Slow Set.

I. Apply each coat to minimum thickness required by manufacturer.

J. Finish to smooth level surface.

K. Cove at vertical surfaces.

3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. See Section 014000 - Quality Requirements, for additional requirements.

B. Test installed floor surface in accordance with ANSI/ESD STM7.1 .

3.6 CURING, CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. Cure the Decorative Mosaic Coating System materials in compliance withmanufacturer's directions, taking care to prevent contamination during stages of theinstallation and prior to completion of the curing process.

B. Protect the Decorative Mosaic Coating System from damage and wear during otherphases of the construction operation, using temporary coverings as recommendedby the manufacturer. Remove temporary covering just prior to final inspection.

C. Clean the Decorative Mosaic Coating System just prior to final inspection, usingmaterials and procedures suitable to the system manufacturer.

D. Some cleaners will affect the color, gloss or texture of your polymer floor surfaces.To determine how your cleaner will perform, first test each cleaner, in a small area,utilizing your cleaning technique. This precaution will demonstrate the effect of yourcleaner and technique. If no deleterious effects are observed, continue with theprocedure. If deleterious effects do occur, modify the cleaning material and/orprocedure. For recommendations regarding types of cleaners, contact the DecorativeMosaic Coating System manufacturer.

E. Prohibit traffic on floor finish for 48 hours after installation.
