    PART 1 GENERAL

    1.01 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

    A. This Section covers the furnishing and installation of all gratings and related

    accessories, whether shown on the Contract Drawings in detail or required ingeneral, to perform the intent to make a complete and operable facility.

    B. The Contractor shall furnish all labor, materials, tools and equipment required tocomplete the Work.

    1.05 DEFINITIONS

    A. clip: Small fastening device, usually of metal, to hold element or component in placeby mechanical action or friction.

    B. grating: Welded framework of crossbars used as flooring for equipment platforms,platform walkways, catwalks and stair treads, trench covers, etc.

    C. grating bearing bars: Bars run parallel to the length and are responsible for theproducts load bearing.

    D. grating bearing bar height: The height measured from the bottom of the bearingbar to the top.

    E. grating bearing bar thickness: Also known as bearing bar width which is themeasurement of distance between the left surface of the bearing bar to the rightsurface of the same bearing bar.

    F. grating bearing bar spacing: Is the measurement of distance between the center ofone bearing bar to the center of the next bearing bar.

    G. grating cross bars: Bars solely responsible for holding the bearing bars together.

    H. grating cross bar spacing: Is the measurement of distance between the center ofone cross bar to the center of the next cross bar.

    I. serrated: With saw-like edge.

    1.06 SUBMITTALS

    A. The Contractor shall submit to the Royal Commission, under the provisions ofSECTION 01330, the following items for review and approval before commencingWork:

    1. Quality Control Program

    a) The program shall cover items intended for shop inspection, fieldsupervision and tests, as well as the procedures for carrying out thesame, all in accordance with SECTION 01450.

    2. Product Data

    a) Manufacturers catalogs, specifications and installation instructions foreach type of materials and accessories to be used.

    3. Shop Drawings

    a) Fully detailed, showing sizes, details of fabrication and installation,details of connections, clips and anchorage devices, and accessoryitems.

    4. Certificates

    a) Certificates signed by manufacturer certifying that products furnishedcomply with specified requirements.

    5. Samples

    a) If required by the Royal Commission, representative samples ofmaterials and finishes for products exposed to view shall be submitted.

    1) The Royal Commissions review of sample will be for color,texture, finishes, and general condition.

    2) Compliance with all additional requirements is the responsibility of

    the Contractor and subject at all times to further approval by theRoyal Commission.

    1.07 QUALITY CONTROL

    A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop andpropose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specifiedquality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance withSECTION 01450.

    1. Each manufactured product shall meet, as a minimum, the requirementsspecified in this Specification.

    2. Fabricator Qualifications

    a) Shall be a firm experienced in designing and producing gratings with arecord of successful in-service performance, as well as sufficientproduction capacity to produce required units.

    3. Metal Bar Grating Standards

    a) Shall comply with applicable requirements of NAAMM MBG 531.

    1.08 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

    A. All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in fullaccordance with the respective health and safety requirements established by thefollowing:

    1. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

    a) Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.

    2. Royal Commission Regulations

    a) Standards, Contractual Conditions, and Health and Safety Systems.

    3. Contractor

    a) Health and Safety Standards and Systems as accepted by the RoyalCommission.

    B. In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall beemployed throughout.

    1.09 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

    A. Unless otherwise indicated, provide gratings capable of withstanding the followingstructural load without exceeding the allowable design stress of the materialsinvolved, including anchors and connections:

    1. Floors, and Stair Treads and Landings

    a) Capable of withstanding a uniform load of 5 kPa or a concentrated loadof 9 kN, whichever produces the greater stress.

    2. Walkways and Elevated Platforms

    a) Capable of withstanding a uniform load of 3 kPa with deflection notexceeding L/360 or 6 mm, whichever is less.

    3. Sidewalk and Vehicular Driveways

    a) Capable of withstanding the applicable intended loads.

    1.10 JOB CONDITIONS

    A. Field Measurements

    1. Where gratings are indicated to fit to other construction, dimensions of otherconstruction shall be verified by field measurements before fabrication andindicate measurements on Shop Drawings. Fabrication schedule shall becoordinated with construction progress to avoid delaying the work.

    1.11 COORDINATION

    A. Installation of anchorages for gratings, grating frames, and supports shall becoordinated. Setting drawings, templates, and directions for installing anchorages,including sleeves, concrete inserts, anchor bolts, and items with integral anchors,that are to be embedded in concrete or masonry, shall be furnished. Such items shallbe delivered to Project site in time for installation.

    1.12 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE

    A. The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units inaccordance with SECTIONS 01650 and 01660, as well as the followingrequirements:

    1. Mark weight and piece (mark) number, corresponding to shop erectionsequence drawings. Match mark shop pre-fitted members.

    2. Ship small parts, such as bolts, nuts, washers, pins, fillers, clips, and anchors,in boxes, crates, or barrels. Pack separately each length and diameter of boltsand each size of nut and washer. Plainly mark an itemized list and descriptionof the contents on the outside of each container.

    3. Load, transport, unload, and store metal materials in such a manner that themetal is kept clean and free from damage.

    4. Store materials above ground on platforms, skids, or other supports, and cover

    and protect to avoid damage due to inclement weather and constructionactivities.

    5. Parts and assemblies that will be shipped unassembled shall be packed andclearly tagged in a manner that will protect the materials from damage, andfacilitate identification and final assembly in the field.

    6. Manufacturers commercial standard gratings shall be stored and handled inaccordance with manufacturers recommendations.

    PART 2 PRODUCTS

    2.01 GENERAL

    A. All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when

    available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and productsmanufactured out-of-Kingdom must be approved by the Royal Commission.

    2.02 MATERIALS

    A. Unless otherwise indicated, materials shall conform to the following:

    1. Ferrous Metals

    a) Steel Plates, Shapes, and Bars

    1) Steel plates, shapes, and bars shall be in accordance with

    ASTM A36M.

    b) Wire Rod for Grating Crossbars

    1) Wire rod shall be in accordance with ASTM A510M.

    c) Welding Rods and Bare Electrodes

    1) Welding rods and bare electrodes shall be selected to AWSSpecifications for metal alloy to be welded.

    2. Stainless Steel

    a) Sheet, Strip, Plate and Flat Bars

    1) Comply with ASTM A666.

    b) Bars and Shapes

    1) Bars and shapes shall be in accordance with ASTM A276.

    3. Aluminum

    a) Extruded Bars and Shapes

    1) Bars and shapes shall be in accordance with ASTM B221M,alloys as follows:

    (a) 6061-T6 or 6063-T6, for bearing bars of gratings andshapes.

    (b) 6061-T1, for grating crossbars.

    4. Manufacturers Standard Grating

    a) Manufacturers standard gratings shall be in accordance with theapproved manufacturers product data as specified in par. 1.06 A.2.

    B. Anchors, Fasteners and Accessories

    1. Fastener Clips

    a) Fastener clips shall be in accordance with grating manufacturersrecommendations.

    2. Bolts and Nuts

    a) Regular hexagon-head bolts conforming to ASTM A307, Grade A; withhex nuts conforming to ASTM A563M, where indicated, flat washers.

    3. Plain Washers

    a) Plain washers shall be round, carbon steel, conforming toANSI B18.22.M.

    4. Lock Washers

    a) Helical, spring type, carbon steel, conforming to ANSI B18.21.2M.

    C. Paint

    1. Paint shall be as specified in par. 2.05.

    2.03 FABRICATION

    A. General

    1. Shop Assembly

    a) Grating sections shall be fabricated in shops to greatest extent possible

    to minimize field splicing and assembly.

    b) Units shall be disassembled only as necessary for shipping andhandling limitations.

    c) Connections that maintain structural value of joined pieces shall beused.

    d) Units shall be clearly marked for assembly and coordinated installation.

    2. Gratings shall be formed from materials of size, thickness, and shapesindicated, but not less as that needed to support indicated loads.

    3. Metals shall be sheared and punched clearly and accurately. Burrs shall beremoved.

    4. Exposed connections shall be fitted accurately together to form hairline joints.

    5. Steel Grating Finish

    a) Unless otherwise indicated, shall be galvanized in the followinglocations:

    1) Exterior.

    2) Interior, where indicated.

    b) Interior gratings shall be prime painted unless specified galvanized.

    6. Aluminum Grating Finish

    a) Finish shall be milled, unless otherwise indicated.

    7. Welding

    a) Comply with AWS recommendations and the following:

    1) Use materials and methods that minimize distortions and developstrength and corrosion resistance of base materials.

    2) Obtain fusion without undercut or overlap.

    3) Remove welding flux immediately.

    8. Anchorage shall be provided for the type indicated and shall be coordinatedwith supporting structures. Anchoring devices shall be fabricated and spacedto secure gratings, frames, and supports rigidly in place and to supportindicated loads.

    a) Screws, bolts, nuts and washers, clips used for fastening or fixinggratings to the supporting members, whether exposed or not, shall havenon-corrosive coatings.

    b) Fasteners for aluminum and stainless steel gratings shall be non-magnetic stainless steel, zinc-plated steel or other material warranted bythe manufacturer to be compatible with aluminum and stainless steeland other components.

    9. Manufacturers Standard Gratings

    a) Fabricated in accordance with the approved sample product data andproduct sample as specified in pars. 1.06 A.2 and 5.

    B. Metal Bar Gratings

    1. Unless otherwise indicated, metal bar gratings shall comply withNAAMM Metal Bar Grating Manual and as herein specified:

    a) Traffic Surface for Steel Bar Gratings

    1) Plain or knurled or serrated or having applied abrasive finishconsisting of aluminum oxide aggregate in an epoxy resinadhesive.

    2. Removable grating sections shall be fabricated with banding bars attached bywelding to entire perimeter of each section. Anchors and fasteners of typeindicated shall be included or, if not indicated, as recommended bymanufacturer for attaching to supports, or with the following options:

    a) Provide not less than 4 saddle clips for each grating section with eachclip designed and fabricated to fit over 2 bearing bars.

    b) Provide not less than 4 weld lugs for each grating section with each lugshop welded to 3 or more bearing bars. Interrupt intermediate bearing

    bars as necessary for fasteners securing grating to supports.

    c) Furnish threaded bolts with nuts and washers for securing grating tosupports.

    d) Furnish self-drilling fasteners with washers for securing grating tosupports.

    e) Furnish galvanized malleable-iron flange clamp with galvanized bolt forsecuring grating to supports.

    3. Cutouts in grating sections for penetrations indicated shall be fabricated.Cutouts shall be arranged to permit grating removal without disturbing items

    penetrating gratings.

    a) Edge-band openings in grating that interrupt four or more bearing barswith bars of the same size and material as bearing bars.

    4. Do not notch bearing bars at supports to maintain elevation.

    C. Grating Frames and Supports

    1. Steel Frames and Supports

    a) Fabricated from structural-steel shapes, plates, and bars of weldedconstruction to sizes, shapes, and profiles indicated and as necessary toreceived gratings.

    2. Stainless Steel Frames and Supports

    a) Fabricated from structural-stainless steel shapes, plates, and bars ofwelded construction to sizes, shapes, and profiles indicated and asnecessary to received gratings.

    3. Aluminum Frames

    a) Manufactured frames provided by grating manufacturer. Frames shall befabricated from extruded-aluminum shapes to sizes, shapes, andprofiles indicated and as necessary to receive gratings.

    4. Units shall be equipped with integrally welded anchors for casting into concreteor building into masonry.

    a) Unless otherwise indicated, anchors shall be spaced 600 mm oncenters.

    5. Unless otherwise indicated, steel frames and supports shall be galvanized inthe following locations:

    a) Exterior.

    b) Interior, where indicated.

    2.04 FINISHING

    A. Metal bar gratings shall comply with NAAMMs Metal Finishes Manual forArchitectural and Metal Products for recommendations for applying and designatingfinishes.

    B. Finish gratings, frames, and supports after assembly.

    C. Galvanizing

    1. Where certain components are indicated to be galvanized, galvanizing shallcomply with the following requirements:

    a) Steel and ferrous metal items shall be galvanized after fabrication by thehot-dip process in accordance with ASTM A123M. Provide high qualitygalvanizing in conformance with ASTM A385.

    b) Safeguarding against steel embrittlement shall conform to the applicablerequirements of ASTM A143M.

    c) Safeguarding against warpage and distortion of steel members shallconform to the applicable requirements of ASTM A384M.

    d) Bolts and screws for attachments of galvanized items shall begalvanized in accordance with ASTM A153M.

    2.05 CLEANING AND PAINTING

    A. Non-Galvanized Metalwork

    1. All surfaces of non-galvanized metalwork shall be cleaned and treated toassure a maximum paint adherence, prior to application of the shop primecoat, in accordance with SSPC-SP 1, SSPC-SP 3, SSPC-SP 10, andSSPC-SP 11 as applicable for the exposure and application.

    2. Ferrous metalwork shall be given a shop coat of rust-inhibitive metal primer.Materials and application shall conform to SSPC-Paint 20 or SSPC-Paint 22 asapplicable for the exposure and application, or other approved rust-inhibitivemetal primer standard with the manufacturer. All surfaces of gratings shall bespray painted.

    B. Galvanized Metalwork

    1. Galvanized metal surfaces indicated to be painted shall be prepared forpainting in accordance with ASTM D2092.

    2. Galvanized metal surfaces shall then be given a shop coat of galvanized

    primer in accordance with SSPC-PA 1. Materials and applications shallconform to SSPC Paint 20, Zinc-Rich Primers, Type I - Inorganic orType II - Organic.

    C. Refer to SECTION 09910 for compatibility of the prime coat and finish coats of paint.

    PART 3 EXECUTION

    3.01 EXAMINATION

    A. Installation conditions shall be verified as satisfactory to receive work of this Section.

    B. Installations shall not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.

    3.02 PREPARATION

    A. Dimensions of supporting structures shall be verified at the project site and final ShopDrawings adjusted to reflect actual field dimensions.

    3.03 INSTALLATION

    A. General

    1. Fastening to In-Place Construction

    a) Anchorage devices and fasteners shall be provided where necessary forsecuring gratings to in-place construction. Threaded fasteners forconcrete and masonry inserts, through-bolts, lag bolts, and otherconnectors shall be included.

    2. Cutting, Fitting, and Placement

    a) Cutting, drilling, and fitting required for installing gratings shall beperformed. Units shall be set accurately in location, alignment, andelevation; measured from established lines and levels and free from

    rack.

    3. Temporary bracings or anchors shall be provided in formwork for items thatare to be built into concrete or masonry.

    4. Exposed connections shall be fit accurately together to form hairline joints.

    5. Surfaces of exterior units that have been hot-dip galvanized after fabricationand are for bolted or screwed field connections shall not be welded, cut, orabraded.

    6. Field welding shall be in accordance with the requirements specified inpar. 2.03 A.7.

    B. Metal Bar Gratings

    1. Gratings shall be installed to comply with recommendations of referencedmetal bar grating standards that apply to grating types and bar sizes indicated,including installation clearances and standard anchoring details.

    2. Removable units shall be attached to supporting members with type and sizeof clips and fasteners indicated or, if not indicated, as recommended by grating

    manufacturer for type of installation conditions shown.

    3. Non-removable units shall be attached to supporting members by weldingwhere both materials are the same; otherwise, fasten by bolting.

    C. Manufacturers Standard Gratings

    1. Manufacturers standard gratings shall be installed in accordance withmanufacturers installation instructions.

    3.04 FIELD PAINTING AND REPAIR OF COATING

    A. Galvanized Surfaces

    1. Shop galvanized metalwork necessitating field welding which in any mannerremoves original galvanizing, field welds, bolted connections, and abradedareas shall be restored by field galvanizing repair in accordance with

    ASTM A780.

    a) Galvanizing repair paint shall be high-zinc-dust-content paint for re-galvanizing weld in steel, complying with SSPC-Paint 20.

    B. Painted Surfaces

    1. After installation, exposed painted surfaces, field welds, and other abraded ordamaged primed surfaces shall be touched up with an additional coat of thesame primer for ferrous surfaces as herein before specified for shop painting.
