N JTV takes a deep dive into World War II history with new dramas and documentaries, as the 75 th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and International Holocaust Remembrance Day approaches on January 27, 2020. It has long been known that German soldiers used a methamphetamine called Pervitin in World War II. But have tales of Nazis on speed obscured the other side of the story: the massive use of stimulants by British and American troops? Historian James Holland starts on a quest to unearth the truth behind the world’s first pharmacological arms race in Secrets of the Dead: World War Speed (Thursday, January 9 at 8pm). “World War II is taking place over six years, and a lot is being expected of the young men of the major combatant nations,” Holland says in the film. “Is it any wonder in this life-and- death struggle for the future of the world that people are looking at drugs that can keep people awake and improve morale? It’s absolutely no wonder at all.” Another Secrets of the Dead brings together historians, survivors and experts to consider one of the great moral dilemmas of the 20th century: Would an Allied attack on Auschwitz concentration camp have stopped future atrocities? Bombing Auschwitz (Thursday, January 30 at 8pm) recounts the testimony of two Jewish prisoners who escaped Auschwitz, which revealed the true horror of the Holocaust to the outside world, and the arguments that took place at the highest levels of government over the potential bombing of the camp. To continue your historical education of World War II, you’ll also want to tune in to Resistance (Tuesday, January 28 at 8:50pm). Based on true events, this is the story of a group of young French heroes fighting for freedom from German Nazi occupation in World War II. Together, they join forces to produce a newspaper. The dramatic miniseries is in French with English subtitles. 1 JANUARY 2020 JOSEPH SINNOTT COURTESY OF BRAVE PLANET FILMS COUNT BASIE — THROUGH HIS OWN EYES Known as “the King of the Swing Kings,” Count Basie’s musical achievements were remarkable. NJTV takes a deep dive into World War II history with new dramas and documentaries, as the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and International Holocaust Remembrance Day approaches on January 27, 2020.

“Is it any wonder in this life-and-death struggle for the future of the world that people are looking at drugs that can keep people awake and improve morale? It’s absolutely no wonder at all.”

Another Secrets of the Dead brings together historians, survivors and experts to consider one of the great moral dilemmas of the 20th century: Would an Allied attack on Auschwitz concentration camp have stopped future atrocities?
