Towards all-rounddevelopment of the youth

Today, science and technologicaladvancements have been followed byundesirable consequences that somecountries with superiority in wealth are tryingto gain domination over the Third Worldand exercising a strong bias in the field ofinternational relations. The situations reflectthat the people need to work hard on self-reliant basis for the motherland to be able tostand tall in the international communityand enjoy development.

The drive for development of the nationand the people calls for continuous productionof human resources apart from goodfoundations such as stability, peace andnational unity.

In pursuit of national educationpromotion plans, the government is takingsteps to create an education system that cancreate a life-long learning society.

Only a competent teacher can sharpenthe abilities of a student effectively. Ensuringhigh ability, education qualifications andconcepts of students depends on teachers’competence in educating, guiding andnurturing them.

In particular, teachers have to nurturethe students at full capacity for superbimprovement in the subjects, after identifyinginterest, innate nature, personality and sizeof diligence of each student.

Singapore attracts recordinvestments in 2007

SINGAPORE, 22 Jan—Singapore attracted 16.1billion Singapore dollars(about 11.3 billion USdollars) in manufacturingfixed asset investments(FAI) in 2007, exceeding10 billion Singapore dollarsfor the first time ever, theEconomic DevelopmentBoard (EDB) announcedMonday.

It grew by 82.95 per centfrom 2006's 8.8 billionSingapore dollars, andalso exceeded the targetof 8.5-9 billion Singaporedollars set a year ago.

When fully imple-

mented, the investmentscommitted in 2007 willcreate 28,600 new jobs andadd 11.6 billion Singaporedollars per year to thecountry’s gross domesticproduct (GDP), said theEDB.

Singapore has beentrying to pursue capital-,knowledge- and inno-vation-intensive invest-ments, which the EDBsaid are key to thecontinued and sustaineddevelopment of Singa-pore’s economy.

Close to 400 projectswere committed last year.

Among the key projectswas the multi-billion-dollar petrochemical ex-pansion project ofExxonMobil.

When completed in2011, it would be Exxon-Mobil’s largest integratedchemical and refining sitein the world.

Finland’s Neste Oil isalso building the world’slargest next-generationbiodiesel manufacturingplant here, while Switzer-land’s Novartis is buildinga large-scale biotechno-logy plant.

Sinopec crude oil output up2.27%, natural gas up

10.33% in ’07BEIJING, 22 Jan—China Petroleum and Chemical

Corporation (Sinopec) announced on Monday that itscrude oil output reached 291.67 million barrels lastyear, up 2.27 per cent from 2006.

According to unaudited figures released by Sinopec,it produced 283 billion cubic feet of natural gas in2007, up 10.33 per cent. Sinopec processed 155.58million tons of crude in 2007, a year-on-year increaseof 6.33 per cent. Output of gasoline rose by 7.35 percent to 24.69 million tons; diesel, up 3.84 per cent to60.08 million tons; kerosene, up 31.02 per cent to 8.32million tons and light chemical feedstock, up 3.21 percent to 23.47 million tons.

Output of ethylene, synthetic resins and syntheticrubbers rose by 6.02 per cent, 12.08 per cent and 19.76per cent, respectively, from 2006.

However, output of synthetic fibers fell 5.66 percent and that of urea was down 2.73 per cent.

Total domestic sales volume of refined oil productsrose 6.9 per cent to 119.39 million tons in 2007.

Lee’s transition teamsaid it has finalized itsdecision to almost fullyopen government jobsto foreigners and is topresent a revision of thepublic service law to theNational Assembly laterMonday.

“We have decided torevise the law so thatcompetent foreigners can

be appointed to neededpositions,” transitioncommittee spokespersonLee Dong-kwan said in abriefing. “We will alsoseek measures to commitforeign officials to con-fidentiality even afterretirement.”

LOS ANGELES, 21 Jan — A US Border Patrol agentwas killed during an operation, prompting HomelandSecurity Secretary Michael Chertoff to call the incidenta “heinous” act, authorities said on Sunday.

The incident took place Saturday when the patrolagent was struck and killed by a fleeing vehicle he waspursuing in an anti- smuggling operation at the Cali-fornia-Mexico border, according to Jeremy Schapp-ell, a spokesman for the Border Patrol.

The agent was trying to stop two vehicles that hadillegally entered the United States from Mexico whenhe was hit, said Schappell. The name of the victim wasbeing withheld until relatives could be notified,Schappell said.

US military death toll rises to 3925BAGHDAD, 22 Jan— Two American soldiers were killed on Saturday in two

incidents in central Iraq, the US military said on Monday. One soldier was killed by a roadside bomb attack in the area of Arab Jabour

in south of Baghdad, a military statement said. The area, which is a stronghold of militants affiliated to al-Qaeda in Iraq

network, was the scene of ongoing major offensive launched by US and Iraqitroops.

COLOMBO, 21 Jan—Sri Lanka’s forceshave attacked five Tamil Tiger boats inthe north, while separately troops havekilled 41 rebels and one soldier died infresh fighting, the military said onSunday.

A six-year truce between the stateand the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE) formally ended on Wednesday,opening the way for a military push forthe Tigers’ northern stronghold and abloody escalation in a 25-year civil war.

The fighting in the northern JaffnaPeninsula, northern districts ofVavuniya, Pollonnaruwa and north-western district of Mannar came daysafter 27 people were killed in a busambush in the central town of Buttala,

which the military blamed on the Tigers.“Troops attacked a line of LTTE

terrorist bunkers ... south of AdampanTank in Mannar and completely destroyedsix to eight of them,” said a spokesman atthe media centre for national security,asking not be name in line with policy.

“Troops also recovered the bodies oftwo female terrorists and some weapons.”

Bomber kills 15 at funeral innorthern Iraq

BAGHDAD, 22 Jan — A suicide bomber killed 15 people and wounded 10 whenhe blew himself up at a funeral ceremony in the northern Iraqi city of Baiji onMonday, a security official said.

The attack is thelatest in a spate of deadlybombings in Iraq’s northernprovinces, where the USmilitary says al-Qaedamilitants have regroupedafter being forced out ofother areas.

LONDON, 22 Jan — Arecovery operation wasunderway on Sunday tomove a British AirwaysBoeing 777 that crash-landedat London’s HeathrowAirport on Thursday.

The 200-ton aircraft,which suffered engineproblems and came downwell short of the southernrunway, was being movedonto electronicallycontrolled platforms in anoperation expected to takeseveral hours.

The plane will thenstart a 500-metre journeyfrom the end of therunway to the airline’sengineering base at HattonCross, which is expectedto take a further two hours.
