Secondary Source Pictures- Mise en scene

SettingsThis PowerPoint is again about mise en scene and the settings of music videos and how they

interlink with the lyrics and therefore I have attempted to find my own pictures of settings with what I believe it could represent in music.

This will help me to gather ideas and more knowledge for when I start filming my own

music video. I have searched and listened to various songs for inspiration in this PowerPoint.

These secondary images have been found from search engines such as Google and yahoo, they would represent a dance song which would be fast paced and very upbeat, scenes of nightlife and clubbing would help the audience to relate to a night of dancing and therefore this association would help the audience to remember and enjoy the song. Singers such as Cascada would be the expected candidate to have mise en scene settings like these.

A beach represents a holiday for most people, so therefore songs which are relaxing and possibly romantic could be used for this, for example, The Pussycat Dolls, Mariah Carey and Beyonce would be expected to use places like a beach for their music. The sunsets and scenic settings are pleasant and appealing and therefore an audience which is female would be most probably targeted. The songs also would be about love and emotions interlinking with emotions and the feminine impression from settings of beaches.

These images give a gloomy impression which are negative probably representing the feelings of confusion and lost, music artists such as Coldplay tend to use mysterious backgrounds for the music videos and CD covers for songs such as Violet Hill where scenes of a violet grey sky are used throughout linking to the lyrics. The graveyard shows death or dying but also could be metaphorical for emotions for somebody dying, it is important to look deeper into images and settings for the mise en scene to set the right impression and atmosphere for the song.

These images are of the nightlife in various famous cities around the world, in cities it is very fast pace with the dense transport and can be disorientating with the large populations but despite this it can be lonely and therefore a song which would represent a negative emotion such as this would contradict peoples expectations but at the same time be intriguing. Images of graffiti could be used as the backing design for CD covers to interlink with the video and could also be the background scene of some shots in the video creating the city impression. Also, the pace could link with the beat of the song and the editing of the video creating a fast paced music song for example: My delirium by Lady Hawke in my opinion portrays a city fast paced life.

These images are romantic but are positive, pictures of children often show innocence and mean the past of the singer and how they are waiting to meet somebody or how they have grown up with love. The fields also show innocence and romance as they giving an appealing impression of hope and happiness. These scenes could be for songs such as by Taylor Swift – Love Story or as mentioned before The Pussycat Dolls.

These settings could be used as the mise en scene for music from other genres other than the mainstream pop category, it could be used for indie rock and singers such as Avril Lavigne who are often depicted in less stereotypical environments for a female, as well, it could be giving the impression of anger within the mise en scene with less positive connotations given.

These pictures give connotations of the word ‘ghetto’ and would best suit a rap song from singers such as Eminem who sing about their life experiences from the past which were negative and difficult. Rap songs are very realistic and to shoot a video in a derelict area showing real life crime, poverty and suffering would help to set the scene of a rap music video whilst linking in with the lyrics. Fashion is also important because in different sub cultures, there are different stereotypical expectations including mise en scene other than the setting and therefore it is important to research the ideal locations and background to music lyrics in all aspects. The impression from these secondary images are mainly negative as they interlink with the daily problems that countries have to deal with and are trying to solve and therefore it creates an image of life in a gritty harsh sense.

These pictures show hope, in the darker images with the grey sky there is still beams of light, which can be portrayed as happiness and positivity. Music artists such as the Lighthouse family sing with music videos involving environments similar to these, after completing my research for this I discovered one of their songs called ‘High’ which talks about hope and has a similar approach by using natural settings. Mountains and sunsets can be very symbolic, it is unlikely that I shall be filming a mountain as this is unreasonable with limited resources from where I live but simple scenes such as a sunrise could link in to the lyrics of a song talking about hope or positivity.

These images convey wealth which again I cannot film but it is still important to understand the varying settings which can be used for a music video. The scenes here represent big houses, cars and swimming pools- Lady Gaga for her music video of Poker face used this theme as Poker, the game, interlinks to money. Therefore, if the song lyrics mention aspects that can be related to wealth then this is the correct setting but I would not be able to use this for my music video with the inability to portray the song correctly to the stereotypes which would then lead it to be ineffective. Planes in the air can also convey power and being untouchable creating a distance from the audience yet remaining with the image of wealth.

These images represent bands playing live for the music video, because the setting remains the same, the camera techniques need to be more intriguing alongside the editing skills so that the music video is still striking and bold. Often you will find bands playing live in a pub or on stage for a tour and therefore there could be shots to the mise en scene of the area for example the guitars they are playing so that the audience remains interested and given a more accurate impression of the place.

It is important to look at the settings because they strongly link in with the songs and its lyrics and if it does not fit in with what people expect then the song will give an unprofessional impression and will be ineffective. However, if the mise en scene settings are planned then the music video is more likely to be effective and intriguing.

I intend to take pictures as primary photography and examining the environments in which I have access to myself.

This PowerPoint has given me more insight into how crucial settings are of a music video and has shown me that I need to focus more on the types of music which I should aim at looking at for my music video because I am limited in areas where I can film.
