Secondary Literacy Coordinator Job Description 2016-17 BASIC FUNCTION: Under direction of assigned supervisor, promote and support language, literacy, reading acceleration, English Language Arts, and History instruction; plan and implement ongoing professional learning, activities and/or special events; provide recommendations of expenditures for resources that enhance the school programs; and provide support and guidance to respective site and district staff. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to reflect the principal job elements accurately.) ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Support the design and facilitation of ongoing professional development, coaching, and supervision for site-based Common Core Teacher Leaders about Common Core, Balanced Approach to Literacy, Reading and Language Intervention, Designated and Integrated ELD, facilitation and coaching, and other topics as needed.

• Collaborate with colleagues in Teaching and Learning, teachers, site administrators, and district departments to build capacity around the full range of curriculum, assessment (especially local writing assessments), and instructional activities in English and History, language and literacy supports, and the Common Core State Standards and their connection to the new ELD standards. For instance:

o monthly Second Wednesday Professional Development and the Teacher Leader Collaborative, where teachers and teacher leaders participate in and use inquiry cycles (analyze data and make collaborative instructional decisions).

o meet with and provide strategic professional learning to site teams and administrators about curriculum, assessment, and instruction as needed.

o support the use of our OUSD-created Writing Tasks through professional development (calibration and scoring) and creation and dissemination of data reports.

• Collaborate with an assigned Network team to provide strategic support of that Network’s sites, administrators, and teachers.

• Support pilot, adoption, and implementation of core curricular materials in ELA and history to align with content standards; review materials, communicate with vendors; coordinate a comprehensive feedback, data collection, and synthesis process that includes teachers, administrators, parents, and other stakeholders; coordinate the professional development and ongoing teacher and central office inquiry after materials have been adopted.

• Coordinate our departmental communications through email and website maintenance to house digital instructional and curricular resources.

• Plan, lead, and/or attend meetings with appropriate departments and stakeholders (Linked Learning, RAD, Networks, Talent, etc.) to align instructional support of teachers and principals.

• Recruit, hire, develop, support, coach and evaluate assigned staff and teachers as needed • Develop and maintain partnerships with interested parties, both within and outside of our District,

and seek grant funding opportunities. • Develop, monitor, and evaluate the operational systems, processes, and documentation of

assigned area. • Participate in approved professional development to maintain current knowledge of evolving

needs of students and the District related to workscope. • Report to and collaborate with Literacy Manager. • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, five years teaching experience including content instruction, and relevant program leadership or administrative experience. Master’s degree preferred. Bilingual skills preferred. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• Valid California (or Out-of-State) Teaching Credential with English Learner authorization • Valid California (or Out-of-State) Administrative Credential • Valid California Driver’s License • Employment eligibility will include fingerprints, tuberculosis and/or other clearance

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES KNOWLEDGE OF:

• Effective pedagogy, curricular programs, assessments, and supplementary materials for historically underserved populations, English and Standard English Learners. For instance: workshop model/balanced literacy for adolescents

• Effective methods and frameworks for professional development facilitation, adult learning, and coaching

• Principles and practices of organization, management (supervision and evaluation), and leadership

• California Department of Education and Other Frameworks governing work scope such as: Common Core Standards, ELA/ELD Framework, ELD Standards, Content Standards, Curriculum, Response to Intervention/Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, Full Service Community Schools, Universal Design for Learning

• Strategic direction of District: Common Core and Current District curriculum and school instructional programs, 6-12

• Budget preparation, management, and evaluation to ensure fiscal responsibility and compliance with federal, state, and District mandates

ABILITY TO:

• Plan, organize, and complete multiple projects simultaneously, meet established timelines and deadlines, and regularly evaluate outcomes

• Maintain a learner stance within Literacy department work as well as in engagements across departments and stakeholder groups. For instance: the foundational literacy expertise in K-5

• Analyze challenges, make decisions or recommendations, and be responsible for those decisions • Respond to requests for support and guidance (primarily email) in a timely manner • Prepare and deliver clear and concise presentations to a variety of audiences (T&L colleagues,

cross-department personnel, teachers, administrators, etc.), particularly around instructional materials, guidance, and strategies

• Determine staff development needs and develop strategic plans to learning opportunities to meet those needs

• Use a range of coaching strategies to support diverse teachers and administrators, particularly in the context of observation and data-based coaching cycles

• Interpret, communicate, implement, and maintain current knowledge of applicable federal, state, and District laws, codes, regulations, policies, and collective bargaining contract governing secondary education, related programs, and work scope to stakeholders

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others of diverse backgrounds, experience, and personalities, and work with diverse school sites and conditions in a manner that achieves District goals

• Analyze, interpret and communicate data to support adults to transform practice • Communicate effectively in English orally and in writing, and model communication skills using

tact, patience, and courtesy to understand and respond to the needs and expectations of team members and others

• Operate personal computer, related software, and other office equipment, and flexibly learn new applications and systems as needed

• Meet District standards of professional conduct as outlined in Board Policy WORKING CONDITIONS ENVIRONMENT: Office environment and diverse school site environments; driving a vehicle to conduct work and travel to sites when needed; fast-paced work; regular interruptions. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Consistent mental alertness; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects up to 30 pounds, occasionally 30+ pounds; bending and twisting at the waist, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; dexterity of both hands and fingers while performing duties; seeing to read, write and use the computer; hearing and speaking to exchange information, in person or on the telephone, and make presentations.
