The students have also been busy studying and completing their assigned classwork, homework and various other assignments. The Waitangi Day event hosted last Friday was a great success with the parents, students and teachers from both Secondary and Primary working and joining together to celebrate the culture of New Zealand. The weather co-operated and we had a dry day to accompany our celebrations. On top of their regular academic activities, our Secondary students have also been busy enjoying the wide variety of After School Activities offered by our Secondary teachers and or outsourced service providers. We are happy to announce that National Certified coaches for both Basketball and Badminton have been contracted out to provide their advanced coaching skills to our students. All the ASA activities are designed and set up to allow the students to practice and strengthen their skills in a variety of academic and atheletic subjects. Next week our Secondary students will conduct a student election complete with speeches to choose our Head Boy & Head Girl for 2018 as well as the Deputy Head Boy & Deputy Head Girl. Seven students have been asked to prepare and deliver speeches, to the rest of the Secondary students and teachers, to encourage them to cast their vote for their candidacy next Friday morning. Next Friday the students will make a half day trip to Pondak Indah Mall in order to purchase a book about a subject and topic that is related to one of the academic subjects they are currently studying here at NZIS. The students will be tasked with reading their chosen book and preparing a book report that they will deliver in May to their fellow students and teachers. Preparations are also under way for the Secondary Camp Week and Duke of Edinburgh Prepatory Journey. The service providers will visit NZIS next week to do presentations for a couple different camping options for the students to choose from. Our Secondary Business students have been active selling their snacks and other merchandise at the Waitangi Day event and they were joined on Valentine’s Day by our Secondary 2 & 3 students in a friendly competition to see who could sell the most product and raise the largest amount of money. It is great to see the students excitement and committment towards putting into practice the theory they have learned in Business class. It has been another great 2 weeks in Secondary and we look forward to the next 2 weeks and all the exciting learning and activities that we have planned for our students. Sincerely Yours, Karl M. seconDAry SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Waitangi Day celebrationsThe Secondary students did a wonderful job practicing their Jakarta E and Kapa Haka performances in the lead up to the NZIS Waitangi Day Celebrations and this diligent preparation was rewarded with an excellent performance in front of the entire school and the visiting parents. We were all very proud of their efforts.

The completion of the mural by the Secondary students gave NZIS a wonderful backdrop for all the students to have a memorable class picture taken in front of the mural and a lovely souvenir for the day. I would like to again take the opportunity to thank Mr. Hoki the Secondary Art teacher for all his hardwork, dedication and perseverance in getting this beautiful mural completed in the middle of the rainy season here in Jakarta.

seconDAry BUSINESS CLASS

On a hot and cloudy late Friday morning last week, after the scheduled performances by the NZIS students and after the Maori & New Zealand themed learning activities for the Primary students. The NZIS senior Secondary Business students arranged themselves into two different business companies (Gear Inc. & JAHE) and began to sell their delicious snacks and sweet drinks to students, parents and staff. Their selling accompanied the BBQ sausages and hamburgers that were being provided free of charge by the school.

The first company, Gear Inc., consists of Sec 4 and 4a students (Ivan, Sahil, Jack, and Dean). The second company, JAHE, consists of Sec 4 and JC 1&2 students (Alika, Jasmine, Eunhoo, Hyungwon).

Students were allowed to gather any existing ingredients from home and invested some of their own money to purchase the other ingredients necessary to make their products for selling.

JAHE & GEAR INC. Selling - Waitangi Day

Gear Inc. sold a large variety of dessert products such as chocolate cookies (there were two different types - soft and hard cookies), pancakes, ice cream, ice pops, and Milo drinks. JAHE’s dessert products also sold very quickly, they offered customers: Jell-O, Cupcakes and Oreo Milkshakes. Their Oreo Milkshakes were extremely popular and provided a nice sweet, cold drink to enjoy with the BBQ meats.

It was a great selling event and the dedication and resourcefulness of the students was really amazing to witness. On behalf of JAHE, Gear Inc., I would like to thank all the students, staff and parents for supporting their efforts and purchasing their products.

valentines Day - gear inc. and JAhe go head to head

against secondary 2!Earlier this week the Secondary 2 students were invited to join the selling competition with the senior Secondary Business students. The Secondary 2 students eagerly accepted the challenge and battled against JAHE and Gear Inc. to see who could sell sweet snack foods and beverages products during Valentines Day.

JAHE had some Oreo cookies left over from the Waitangi Day event, and decided to sell Oreo Milkshakes because they were popular on Waitangi Day and they could avoid having to invest more money in extra ingredients, anything they sold would be largely profit. Using a direct person to person marketing campaign and technology (in the form of their smart phones), JAHE was able to sell out (via pre-orders) its inintial quantity of Oreo milkshares prior to the event. This enabled them to realize the high demand for their product and so they increased their production run from 15 to 20 milkshakes and easily sold them all.

As for Gear Inc. they sold a wide variety of products - Pancakes, Ice Cream, Push Pops, Take Cholcolates, Cheese and Chocolate Brownies, Milk Tea, and Jelly. Gear Inc. used a lot of free ingredients from home to reduce their costs and invested some of their own money to purchase the remaining ingredients/products.

And lastly, Secondary 2 had a unique menu of Candygrams, Cookies, Pudding, Love Potion (Red Fanta), Jelly, and Rice Crispie Treats. Their Candygrams sold out really fast, and was by far their best-selling product. Upon reflection, Secondary 2 realized that by using a direct marketing approach and offering pre-orders like JAHE, Secondary 2 could have increased their sales of Candygrams and significantly increased their profits.

It was a great event and the enthusiasm and excitement of the students was contagious. On behalf of JAHE, Gear Inc. And Secondary 2 I would like to thank all the students, staff and parents for supporting their efforts and purchasing their products.

Science is everywhere in the world; Technology is consistently expanding into every part of our lives; Engineering and arts make basic designs in real life situations – eg. construction, weather conditions, disaster management, economical growth, transport etc. Mathematics plays a vital role in binding all subjects together for understanding and achievement.

Exposure to STEAM real life challenging situations equip the younger generation with multiple opportunities to explore its related concepts and hence spark a passion for a future career in a STEAM field.

In our STEAM Rocketry club at NZIS, we built the designs for rockets and the space shuttle. These activities provided hands-on and minds-on lessons for our students connecting the knowledge of subjects together while focussing on building our creative designs.

“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.” (National Science Foundation – NSF – United States)
