2018 Secondary School Athletics Carnival Outline Welcome Welcome to the Athletics Carnival 2018. The Carnival is based wholly on participation and enjoyment with all students competing in every event. It is about participation, sharing, having fun and appreciating the many aspects of sport at St. Andrew’s Often, I admire those students who give their best for themselves, their House and the College. My attention is often drawn not to the front of a race, but to the runners who are in the middle or towards the back of a race…giving their best. I also look for winners who are gracious in victory and losers who are gracious in defeat and hope all competitors recognise the enjoyment of just taking part in a race. Thanks to my terrific College colleagues who will make the carnival a success. Thank you to the ground staff, the support staff and the Snaac Shack, all of whom have assisted in the organisation. I welcome comments and suggestions about creating the best possible carnival in future years!! Have a great day

2018 Secondary School Athletics Carnival Outline

Welcome Welcome to the Athletics Carnival 2018. The Carnival is based wholly on participation and enjoyment with all students competing in every event. House Athletics Carnival Rules 2018 § All students will compete in the 100m, 200m, 800m and all Field events.

§ Times/Distances for Pre-carnival events – 400m, javelin and triple jump times/distances have been recorded for all students during their HPE lessons and points for these events will be awarded to overall results.

§ In the 100m, 200m and 800m the points will be awarded based on times. Fastest time overall will be awarded 22 points etc (see age champion below)

§ In all events - the following scores will apply from 1st to last - 22,20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12,11,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1,1,1,1, - these scores will count towards age champion scores. Every competitor will receive a point for competing.

§ Students will be required to wear their House sports uniform and bring with them a light refreshment, drink, sports hat and sun screen is also required. All items are to be clearly marked with student’s name. There will be an opportunity to buy drinks and food from the SnAAC shack

§ Spiked shoes may be worn in the 100m and 200m but no spiked shoes are to be worn in the 800m or shuttle relay. All students must wear shoes for shot put and discus.

§ All track races - final placings are based on times from all heats not places in heats. There are no finals.

§ The school representative team will be selected from results of the carnival under guidance from Mr Steve Robson and Senior Executives. Please note that team balance or improvement of an individual between the House Sports and the District Sports may mean athletes who do not place in the top two may represent the school. Consideration will be given to those children who are away sick, injured or who are deemed to under-perform.

§ All athletes will be expected to train in preparation for the District carnival.

§ Individual Age Championship - As all students are competing in all events, all points will count towards age champion. Medallions will be awarded to the top 3 placed competitors. Placings in running events are based on times from all events, ie the fastest time from all heats will be awarded 10 points.

General Information for Athletes

§ Please stay in your House area. Do not cross the track while track events are taking place.

§ Please ensure you report to the marshalling area, when your event is called. Listen to the announcer.

§ All athletes must wear shoes. Spiked shoes are permitted in the 100m and 200m races only. They are not to be worn in the 800m or relays. Spiked shoes must be taken off immediately after your event.

§ Recognise sportsmanship.

§ Be gracious in victory and be gracious in defeat.

§ Respect your opposition and fellow House members.

§ All students must wear the correct House uniform to compete.

§ Keep a hat on your head. Keep drinking fluid throughout the day and reapplying sunscreen.

§ Students will rotate through 4 field events: shot put, discus, high jump, long jump. They will also compete in 3 track events 100m, 200m, 800m.

§ All students are to stay as an age group - i.e. 13 year old boys will stick together as a group so that no one can miss their event. All students will be competing at all field events. No students are permitted to wander around the school. All events will take place on the oval.

§ All students are to be seated in House areas when not competing. This is to ensure students do not miss events, to develop team and House spirit and for support of their Houses.

§ No students are allowed on the inside of the track unless they are competing.

§ False starts - will be indicated by 2 quick starting pistol shots, and such will serve as the signal for recall and a further start. In the event of a misfire, a whistle blast will serve as a false start and subsequent recall.

§ No spikes are permitted in the High Jump.
