Market Insights & Hiring Outlook

• As the market continues to evolve and client demands shift, consulting firms are innovating and adjusting their business models. Many firms are now looking to hire MBAs for practice areas (i.e. digital/tech, operations, specific-industry focus, etc.). Read more about it here: Killing Strategy: The Disruption of Management Consulting

• Due to optimistic full-time hiring from the summer internship class and increased rate of return of analysts/alumni, several firms are looking to their internship classes to fill much or all of their full-time head count. However, we believe on-campus full-time hiring will look similar to last year (see next few slides). More details will be available in early September

• Firm feedback on Wharton students remain positive. Employers are excited to see students again in the fall for recruiting – and want to encourage students who applied last year but did not make it through the process to apply again

New at Wharton for 2018• Access to Wall Street Prep: MBACM will be offering free access (for life!) to Wall

Street Prep to all students, which includes modules on Excel and PPT. Access will be available in the Fall.

• Second Year Interview Tracker: MBACM will provide a spreadsheet to make all consulting interview details easily accessible and will continue to update as the season progresses. Resource will be available via email in September

• Education Forum: MBACM has partnered with the WCC to re-design the Consulting Conference, which will now be the Wharton Consulting Education Forum (Sept. 14)

• The Forum will be strictly educational and include panels of summer associates and young alum, an overview of consulting case and more

• The Forum will be open to Second-Year students interested in recruiting for consulting for full-time and want to learn more about the industry, but it is not a recruiting event. (We recommend attending if you did not recruit for consulting first year.)

• Community Building: MBACM and the WCC are engaging more Second Years and Formers (sponsored students) in case prep. The WCC will now be offering a “Train the Trainer” session for Second Years to help mock case peers and First Years

(Re) Connecting with Consulting Network• Who should I connect with?

• If you recruited for consulting last year and have warm/ friendly contacts, we recommend re-engaging with those folks; let them know of your continued interest in consulting and their firm. We also recommend emailing the firm recruiter (see later in deck)

• If you did not recruit for consulting last year, we recommend first reaching out to the firm recruiter (see later in deck) and letting them know of your interest. If interested in connecting with consultants to learn more about their work and experience at the firm, ask the recruiters to introduce you to consultants for you to network with

• Don’t forget about your classmates – lean on your peers who are currently interning at these firms to learn more about their experience and who they’d recommend you speak with

• When should I reach out? There is no right or wrong time to reach out to the consulting firms, but the earliest we’d recommend is late July / early August. You can also wait until you’re back on campus as most firms will host coffee chats

• What should I say? When reaching out to consultants or recruiters, let them know that your summer helped confirm your interest in consulting for full-time because of XYZ reason. You can also share what you learned during your internship and why you’re interested in that firm

• How much should I network? We recommend spending no more than ~30% of your recruiting time on networking; the majority of your prep time on case and fit prep

Message / Issue Advice“I don’t want to work for my summer employer”

• Be honest but not disparaging about why you don’t see a long term fit.

“I have an offer from my summer employer but want to selectively see what else is out there.”

• Be positive and excited with your summer employer. Talk about how much you enjoyed your summer, how much you learned, etc.

• Let your them know that you are going to take some time to think through the offer because you want to make the best decision for all parties involved. Confirm decision timeline.

• Reassure them that you will be in touch with any questions. Offer to be a resource for other students seeking FT or intern opportunities at the firm.

“ I didn’t receive a FT offer.”

• Focus on what you enjoyed about your summer experience that is relevant to your target audience. Highlight your successes.

• Be upfront about why there wasn’t a fit (but not negative) and why you are interested in firm X. Show that you know about their firm.

• Be prepared for the direct question. Respond along the lines of: “At the end of the summer, there was a mutual belief that it was not a good fit/match, however, [option a] I am so excited about this role because of X or [option b] I was proud my manager praised X about my performance”.

• If applicable, build your case and present the % of people who also didn’t get offers.

• If possible, be prepared to share the positive feedback you heard throughout the summer. And focus on the good terms you left on.

• Schedule an appointment with a career advisor.

In All Cases:

• Be confident - watch your body language and practice your pitch / story.

• Be succinct and build a lead in to another question.

• Don’t bad mouth other firms.

• Make sure your story makes sense. Suggested story flow: start with your destination, then tell your back story and then close the loop and connect the dots

• Focus on why your target firm is a better match.

• Make sure you emphasize how you can add value to their organization versus focusing just on your needs.

• Be truthful – firms can and do follow up…!

To practice your answers/ pitch/ story – come visit a Career Advisor in MBACM.

Second Year Resume Tips• Be strategic; focus on relevance over comprehensiveness. Include bullets that support

your target job.

• Gather insight from supervisors, peers or a Wharton Resume Reviewer on how to best describe your internship, how to identify and communicate the impact of your work and/or how to position your internship with respect to your background and career aspirations.

• Consider removing things that are no longer relevant to your target career goals or older content that highlights a skill or accomplishment repeated in the new internship content

• Focus on highlighting your impact – even if the project extends beyond your internship. Are there projected outcomes you can share? What did your contribution do/intend to do for the project? How did you help the team achieve their goals?

• Share the new skills you have developed (are developing) during your internship and the experiences (including conferences or training sessions) that are relevant to your post-MBA targets.

• Be cautious about divulging confidential information when quantifying your accomplishments. It is likely that your employer (and its competitors) will see your resume in the Wharton Resume Book.

Dual Degree / SSF Recruiting Advice

MBA Career Management

18

If you are spending the Fall 2018 semester outside of Philadelphia and are planning to recruit for full time roles in Consulting, see below for tips and advice.

• Networking:• Re-Recruiting for Consulting: Be thoughtful about how much time and energy you spend on networking.

Do enough to re-engage your network and signal your continued interest, your out of Philadelphia fall plans and your intention to re-apply. We recommend spending ~30% of your time networking prior to submitting job applications and the remainder of it on interview prep

• New to Consulting: Reach out and introduce yourself to the recruiters – tell them a little bit about you, why you’re in the program away from Philadelphia and why you’re interested in consulting and their specific firm. You can ask to be connected to someone in a specific office or practice area to learn more about the firm. We recommend spending ~35-40% of your time networking prior to submitting job applications and the remainder of it on interview prep

• Interview Prep: • Watch the presentations here on “Consulting Fit Interviews” and “WCC – Anatomy of a Case Workshop” • Find people (in your classes, at your school, in your network in that city) that interned in consulting or

came from consulting and ask them to do a mock case• Reach out to your classmates in Philadelphia to conduct virtual case prep • Ask the firms for young alumni or contacts in the local office near you to do case prep with • Don’t forget to practice your fit interviews! Set-up an appointment with Elissa Harris or Robyn Ettinger to

do a virtual mock fit interview

• Interviews: • SSF Students: Most firms will conduct Round 1 interviews virtually or in the local office. Anticipate

needing to travel for Round 2 interviews to respective offices • HKS Students: When engaging with the recruiter, you will want to confirm if they’d like you to apply for a

full-time role through Wharton or through HKS. If through Wharton, be prepared to travel to Philadelphia for all Round 1 interviews.
